Forever Geek has posted a good list of Geek movies that will be released this summer. 'Summer', however, is a relative term; they use it more as 'the time when it is hot out' rather than 'the time between summer solstice and the autumnal equinox'. Since a true geek knows that Summer is still a good ways away, I thought I'd list the upcoming Sci-Fi movies that will premiere between the vernal equinox and the summer solstice...you know...in Spring! Most of these movies will fall into the broader Sci-Fi category, since there are only a few that I would consider traditional science fiction.
Since I found so many movies, I split the list into two parts. Here is Part 1, which includes the March and April releases.
March
TMNT (premieres 3/23/2007)
Although the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie didn't make the Forever Geek list, it makes mine. Turtle Power! (Besides, my kids already tabbed this one as a must see.)
The Last Mimzy (3/23/2007)
Another kids-type movie - kids discover a box of toys from the future and wondrous things follow. Still, the buzz is pretty decent, so it may be an alternative if "TMNT" is not your style.
Meet the Robinson's (3/30/2007)
A Disney movie about an orphan who gets taken to the future. The more I see of this movie, the better I think it will be. And, it is Disney, so there is a certain level of quality that I expect.
Skinwalkers (3/30/2007)
A battle between two groups of werewolves revolves around a twelve year old boy. Of course, one group wants to protect the boy, while the other wants to kill him. I don't have high hopes, but, in my book, if you have werewolves, it counts as Sci-Fi (or Sci-Fi/Horror, to be more exact).
Blades of Glory (3/30/2007)
OK - it's not Sci-Fi at all. But, with Will Ferrell and Jon Heder as figure skaters, it will rival "Talladega Nights"...and I *loved* "Talladega Nights".
April
The Forever Geek summary did not include any Sci-Fi movies in April. I found quite a few, although I stretched the definition quite a bit.
The Reaping (4/5/2007)
Hilary Swank stars as a former Christian missionary who lost her faith after the deaths of her family. She is now an expert debunker of supernatural religious phenomena. As you may expect, she finds something that she cannot debunk and must learn how to fight the evil. I think, with Swank involved, this will be a very strong offering.
Grindhouse (4/6/2007)
I know that you have seen the ads for this one. The trailer with the girl with a machine gun as a prosthetic leg? That's this movie. This is basically two movies in one (complete with intermissions!). It was designed by directors Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez to be a tribute to the 70's style exploitation films. If you like Tarantino and Rodriguez, you probably already are going to see this.
Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theaters (4/13/2007)
If you are not familiar with the Aqua Teen Hunger Force comic, just skip the movie. Heck, I *am* somewhat familiar with the show and I still cannot fathom how a fifteen minute cartoon series about a box of fries, a milkshake and a wad of meat translates into a film. I do know that if you like the show, you will be at the movie. A big geek note: Bruce Campbell is credited as a 'voice'. Cool.
Pathfinder (4/20/2007)
I can't help but think this was lucky not to be a straight-to-DVD release. Here is the summary from IMDB: "A Viking boy is left behind after his clan battles a Native American tribe. Raised within the tribe, he ultimately becomes their savoir(sic) in a fight against the Norsemen". However, I'll still be in line to see it, as I am a sucker for these 'one man against an army' plots.
The Invisible (4/27/2007)
I added this one because of the director, David Goyer (of "Blade: Trinity" and "Blade: The Series"). The plot centers around a writer who attacked and left for dead. The writer is suspended between the worlds of the living and the dead (thus, 'invisible' to the living). It might be a surprise...but, I doubt it.
Next (4/27/2007)
'Next' is Nicolas Cage vehicle, with Nic playing a guy who has a minor superpower ability - he can see a few minutes into the future. He has to help a government agent avert a terrorist threat. Nic wants to get a good superhero role in the worst way, but ends up with "Ghost Rider" and this. Meh. Maybe he can get a role in "Watchmen"?
That's it for part one. I'll have the May and June previews ready for tomorrow!
