SCI FI Channel Summer Premieres
The SCI FI Channel announced the release dates for their summer lineup. They have a mix of brand new and returning shows this year. Here is the rundown!
New Shows
Flash Gordon (August 10th)
A brand new "Flash Gordon"! The press releases say that "...it puts a 21st-century spin on the SF classic". I am expecting big camp - and hopefully, it will be good enough to stick.
Destination Truth (June 6th)
Host Josh Gates "...invites viewers along on one man's search for the truth while investigating stories of the unexplained across the globe". Decent premise...but, I saw it when it was called "In Search Of...". I am once again reminded that there are no original ideas left.
The Untitled Derren Brown Project (July 25)
Even though it is slated to debut in less than three months, this show still does not have a title. It will star the British mentalist Derren Brown. If you like magicians, this show is for you.
Returning Shows
Ghost Hunters (June 6)
The "Ghost Hunters" return for another season. I haven't watched this yet, and honestly, I don't plan to.
Who Wants to Be a Superhero? (July 25)
"Superhero" did well in its first season. It's back!
Eureka (July 10)
Now, we are talking. I really started to get hooked on the quirky town of "Eureka". The sheriff grew on me and the town residents are interesting and well acted. I expect an excellent second season!
Doctor Who (July 6)
The good doctor returns with a new companion. If you can only watch one SCI FI Channel show this summer, "Doctor Who" should be the one...(but, you probably should watch "Eureka" also).
OK - let's summarize! SCI FI has two solid offerings ("Doctor Who" and "Eureka"), one possible fun franchise ("Flash Gordon"), and a host of reality/investigative shows. Although I know that a lot of people were hooked on "Who Wants To Be A SuperHero?" and that reality shows are hot, I don't really understand why a science fiction network wants to explore reality so much. I say - less reality, more escapism!
