FOX has announced that they will air the two remaining episodes of "Drive" on July 4th, from 8:00-10:00 PM EST. According to Zap2It.com, "...those two hours will represent the end of the show's initial six-hour run, as well as the last two produced hours for "Drive" (i.e. don't expect an extensive DVD set featuring 13 episodes, because they don't exist)".
There goes our collective DVD hopes.
Since FOX has chosen to air the last two filmed episodes on a night that is typcially one of the least viewed nights of television during the year (with everyone out looking at fireworks and such), I have a nice, subversive idea.
Let no one watch this show live. Use your TiVo, DVR, or VCR, but make damn sure that you time shift!
Here's my thinking: Since FOX showed us such disrespect in the quick cancellation of "Drive", we should avoid soliciting its advertisers. And, since the networks do not count time shifted viewing (since time shifters don't watch the commercials), this could work out great. Just think of the pleasure it would bring if the July 4th edition of "Drive" finishes last in its time slot with less than one million viewers...but, when the DVR numbers come in, the actual viewers number around four million?
That would be awesome.
Beside the pure fun, a time shifting of the show would serve another purpose. It seems to me that the networks adore reality programming specifically because viewers cannot easily time shift those programs. I mean, who want to watch "Survivor" next Tuesday when everyone else already knows who won? But, services are already measuring the number of time shifted viewings - so, a smart network will eventually figure out a way to market to the time shifter.
Now, we know that FOX is not that smart...but, maybe another network can pick up the ball.
