Reasons to be Excited About "Iron Man"

I found an interesting feature over at Filmwad detailing 8 reasons you should be excited about Iron Man. The author of this article, Dean Brooks, seems to be as excited as I am about this movie.

Honestly, I think "Iron Man" may be the our best chance to have another 'classic' in the genre. I believe this movie has the potential to be on the level of "SpiderMan 2" - which is saying something, since I rate Spidey 2 as the best superhero movie of all time (yeah - I really, really love the scene on the train). "Watchmen" may have a chance to be of this level (if they ever begin shooting it), but, none of the this year's superheroes offerings will reach above the level of "good with popcorn".

Brooks lists 8 reasons to be excited about the movie. I love his list, but I need only three:

1. Tony Stark is cool - the fact that he is "Iron Man" is cooler.
As Dean says, "Tony Stark is a manly man with manly issues". He's a billionaire, a talented genius, a reluctant hero and a drunk. Which leads to my second point...

2. Robert Downey Jr. is perfectly cast
This was the number one reason on Dean's list - Robert Downey Jr. is perfectly cast as "Iron Man". A boozing womanizer? Check. An actor that can portray Tony Stark as a billionaire executive, yet still wants to use his toys to save the world. Check. Downey will be completely believable as Stark.

3. Even my 4 year old wants to see this movie
It's true. This movie appeals to the hardcore comic geek, while simultaneously attracting young kids. Who doesn't want an "Iron Man" toy in their Happy Meal? For my kids, I think the appeal is a guy who puts on armor to fight the bad guys - to them, "Iron Man" is like a modern day knight.

After all of this build up, I am disappointed to say that we have to wait until May 2, 2008 to see the movie. I have a good feeling that it will be worth the wait.

Fred, I'm with ya, bro. I've been waiting for this one for a LOOONG time and am overjoyed that it seems to be in such awesome hands!
