A Moment of Silence...for a Good Cause

This is way off-topic...but, I have previously posted on the plight of internet radio and the efforts of SaveNetRadio.org to repeal the royalty rate increases passed by the Copyright Royalty Rate Board.

Today, in protest of the pending rate increase, the SaveNetRadio coalition is coordinating a "National Day of Silence" to protest the new rate structure. ComputerWorld has an excellent article on the planned protest. They call it "...the day the music died."

Their description is not far from the truth. Spokesman Jake Ward said, "The arbitrary and drastic rate increases set by the Copyright Royalty Board on March 2 threaten the very livelihood of thousands of webcasters and their millions of listeners throughout the country." The thought behind the protest is to graphically (er...aurally) demonstrate the landscape of Internet Radio if the 17 months of retroactive payments are billed to the webcasters. The bill on these royalty payments will bankrupt the majority of the smaller Internet radio stations, in effect creating complete silence, since they will be forced to shut down. And, yes - these payments are retroactive and the stations will shut down.
