"Dresden Files" Cancelled
I was catching up on my blog reading and noticed (via Sy Fy Portal) that "The Dresden Files" has officially been cancelled by the SCI FI Channel.
There was a strong following for "The Dresden Files". According to the article, the show was drawing ratings near the level of "Battlestar Galactica" - not too shabby! The "Dresden" fans also were very active in mailing out Save-Our-Show requests, rivaling the efforts for "Jericho" and "Save Carson Beckett" (check my inbox!).
So, if the show was virtually matching "Battlestar Galactica" in the ratings, why is it cancelled when "Battlestar Galactica" lives on?
My take is that it was cancelled because it didn't generate enough buzz. The article mentions that TV Guide's Matt Roush said that the show just didn't make a big enough profit for the network to continue production. I am not sure if that was the final word. "Battlestar Galactica" was saved, in part, because critics, fans and bloggers all were interested in the show. BG is *out there*. You see it on award shows. The actors appear in magazines, movies and other shows. The mainstream media sees "Battlestar Galactica" and knows it exists.
"The Dresden Files", on the other hand, has a nice community of hard core fans and....that's about it. No real mention of the show is made on the major Sci-Fi websites - and no exposure at all on the mainstream sites. So, if you want to know why two shows with similar ratings have different fates, just look to the exposure that the show provides to the network. "Battlestar Galactica" is high profile; "The Dresden Files" is not.
Sci Fi SUCKS! Go do something to your mother!!! Doesn't matter to you who likes what...it's all about the freaking MONEY!!! Inane CRAP like Flash Gordon is alive and well, but a bright light in the dark pit of Sci Fi has been snuffed out.
