Long Break for "Doctor Who"
According to several reports, "Doctor Who" will be taking a long break between season four and season five. A year-long break, in fact.
Zap2It is reporting that the BBC is saying that, aside from some planned specials, "...there will be no regular episodes in 2009". It is also unclear who will be playing the Doctor when the show returns in 2010. The BBC spokeperson declined to make a comment on the subject.
What we do know is that David Tennant has reportedly signed to play Hamlet for the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2008. Most of the gossip around this report will assume that this event is a precursor to a new actor assuming the mantle of the Doctor. I am not of this mindset.
To me, this actually bodes well for Tennant's return in 2010. It appears that show has designed a break to allow their lead actor to perform Hamlet. He reportedly will appear in the special episodes that will air in 2009, which is further evidence that they are merely accomodating his schedule. The real question is will Donna Noble, Martha Jones, Rose Tyler (I can dream) or someone completely new be the Doctor's Companion in the fifth season?
