Things I Will Remember About 2007

It's that time of year. Everyone will make some New Year's Resolutions and most bloggers will post 'a look back' segment. I, for my part, was inspired by a post on Whedoneque for this. So, here are the things that I will remember most about 2007 (from a Sci-Fi point of view):

Falling in Love with "Heroes" (again)

I was completely in to "Heroes" during the first part of season one. Then, I got it in my head that the writer's had no idea what they were doing - and the finale was proof! However, now that season two is underway, I am back in the fold.

Discovering "Chuck"

I was pleasantly surprised by "Chuck". It is very light fare. However, I found that it is one of the first shows that I want to see each week (and, not just because it airs on Mondays!).

"Lost" - the death of Charlie

The best single scene of the year in any show is the drowning of Charlie. I hated to see him go, but it was masterfully done.

"Battlestar Galactica" - the reveal of the Cylons

I added the naming of the remaining Cylons to the list, not for the scene itself, but for the lead up. I was one of those guys reading bulletin boards and trying to decipher the lyrics to "All Along the Watchtower" in order to predict who the other Cylons would be. I think that counts as memorable!

Being completely wrong about "Moonlight"

Wow - I was wrong on this one. I thought the first episode was dreadful. It was poorly acted, directed and writter - the trifecta of bad! For some reason, I decided to give it another episode...and another...and another. "Moonlight" consistently improved each week and the current Coraline storyline is excellent. If you do try to pick up this show, remember to give it a chance.

"Doctor Who's" episode "Blink"

The best scene of the year was Charlie's death on Lost, but the best single episode of the year was "Blink". The Doctor is trapped in the past and implements a very cool plan to get back. This episode has effective horror elements, the normal Doctor Who humor and some 'wow - that is just cool" moments. It was just simply excellent.

Declaring "Supernatural" the best show on TV

2007 was the year I had my epiphany - "Supernatural" is the best show on TV. Sure, there is not much of a gap to Lost and Battlestar Galactica, but "Supernatural" delivers a strong episode each and every week. Sam and Dean are brothers, first and foremost. Eric Kripke and the writing team do a great job of illustrating the relationship between those two while providing stories that advance the plot as a whole. It's really great to watch.

The end of the "Harry Potter" series

Finally, 2007 will be remembered as the year that "Harry Potter" (and all of the associated mania) ended. I bought the book on release day and had it read within two weeks. I watched all of the old movies on TV. And now, I probably will still watch the last two movies as they are released, although the feeling is a lot more somber and a lot less excited than before.

It's nice to look back to see the good in a year gone by. Overall, it was a fairly light year in terms of Sci-Fi goodies. I predict 2008 will be much better!

You're right on so many counts!

Chuck - a pleasant surprise. Sweet and funny and wonderful action and the supporting players are all tops.

Blink! Wow - I'd heard people speak of this episode but when I watched it - yikes! What an excellent piece of writing. So clever and spooky

Supernatural - Still my favorite TV show. So it isn't as intricately plotted as Battlestar. It's the only show I watch that makes me laugh, cry and hide my eyes all in the same hour.

You are SO right about SUPERNATURAL, and it's delicious to see someone with the intelligence to realize the depth and brilliance of this show! Yes, there are demons and humor, action and sexiness, but when it comes down to the end, there is Sam and Dean Winchester, two brothers who love each other above all else, and who will sacrifice everything to save each other. It's a relationship--and a show--to savor for sure!

The thing that blows about Galactica is not only did they make Starbuck a woman, but they made her the 5th Cylon....

SPN rocks. Absolutely the best out there!

Always so happy to find others who appreciate the show! You're dead-on; the writing is terrific and the show has grown to be accessible from an episodic standpoint, but also rewards loyal watchers with the underpinnings of larger background storylines, much in the way that the X Files wove solid episodes into the overarching Smoking Man/ Conspiracy backdrop.
I'd like to put my 2-cents in for the likely canceled Journeyman ( studio execs will probably fill the slot with "The Biggest Overweight Model Pageant Blue-Collar Singing and Band Battle Extravaganza on a Remote Island" Reality Show) which was absolutely terrific, and Reaper, which is consistently entertaining, especially with Ray Wise's performance.

For the Sci-Fi world SUPERNATURAL really is the epiphany (at least J.Joyce would call it like that!).There isn't much I can say...it works, that's it. And it works in such a stunning way!!!
I'd like to meet the writers and directors and actors to shake their hands and say THANK YOU for this show. It's the first time I care so much about a TV programme and I sure hope there would be more seasons.
