2008 Movies You Not Might Know (Yet)

In looking through the *huge* list of movies over at FirstShowing.net, I noticed a few that look to be underrated, or that I simply have not heard of...yet.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
(Release: sometime in 2008)
For me, this is the most interesting movie on the list. It stars Brad Pitt as a man who starts aging backwards. The director is David Fincher, who worked with Pitt on "Se7en" and "Fight Club". And, the story itself is based on a 1922 short story written by F. Scott Fitzgerald. I'm intrigued by the concept and by the Ptt/Fincher reunion. I am betting this will be very good.

Jumper
(Release: February 14th, 2008)
I am just getting in the loop on this movie. The hook is that a man discovers that he can teleport himself anywhere. He learns that there are others that like him...and they are involved in a war that has been going on for thousands of years. It's directed by Doug Liman ("The Bourne Identity", "Mr. & Mrs. Smith"), so there will be action aplenty. I think this is a strong sleeper.

Be Kind Rewind
(Release Date: January 25th, 2008)
Let me preface - Jack Black rules. That said, even without Mr. Black, the plot sounds fairly amusing, featuring a man whose brain becomes magnetized and unintentionally destroys every tape in his friend's video store. So, to satisy their best customer (who happens to have a spot of dementia), the two friends remake the destroyed movies. It could miss the mark, but I bet on the funny here.

Where the Wild Things Are
(Release: October 3rd, 2008)
Spike Jonze directs this adaptation of the Maurice Sendak classic children's story. Now, even though I have heard of the story and have young children, I have not actually read this! The FirstShowing reviewer said "...the promo photos I've seen so far and very early buzz that I've heard has lead me to believe that this is a gem in the works". I would expect that Jonze would bring a very unique take on the story.

Speed Racer
(Release: May 9th, 2008)
I noted this movie in my "Blockbusters" post a few days ago. My fellow bloggers don't think this will be any good at all! However, even though I may have just been hopped up on Milk Duds, I really thought the trailer was excellent. It was different than I expected. I don't expect a pure classic here; but, I do believe it will hit a "Transformers"-like chord with some incredible action scenes. I'll update as more information about the film becomes available.

The X-Files 2
(Release Date: July 25th, 2008)
I was one of those guys that stuck it out until the bitter end of "The X-Files". I even watched some of the "Millenium" spin-off! But, even I wondered - why make a second movie after so many years? But, then I noticed that director Chris Carter is back. Duchovny and Anderson are back. There are no real details about the plot of the film at this time, so I am working on a hunch. And, my gut says that this will be pretty decent.

City of Ember
(Release Date: October 10th, 2008)
This adaption of the City of Ember novel (by Jeanne Duprau) sounds very interesting. The scenario revolves around a city in a world of lights. The official summary says "...the story follows two teenagers as the power source begins to fail and the lamps start to flicker, who search for clues that will unlock ancient mysteries about the city". It looks like I have another set of novels to read after I finish "His Dark Materials"!

I am very interested in the movie --- "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button", for I have read the novel that is really wonderful! The story is so fantastic, I think! Benjamin Button is born an old man and mysteriously begins aging backward. At the beginning of his life he is withered and worn, but as he continues to grow younger he embraces life -- he goes to war, runs a business, falls in love, has children, goes to college and prep school, and, as his mind begins to devolve, he attends kindergarten and eventually returns to the care of his nurse. Sounds interesting? Ya, I think if anyone who wants to see the
movie can read the novel first: dealstudio.com/searchdeals.php?deal_id=78446&ru=279
