"Doctor Who" Spinoff

I've seen several reports on a "Doctor Who" spinoff centering on Sarah Jane Smith. According to the reports, The Sci Fi Channel will premiere both fourth season of "Doctor Who" and the new spinoff "The Sarah Jane Adventures" in April 2008.

As we have reported previously, season four of "Doctor Who" will feature David Tennant returning as the Doctor and Catherine Tate as the new companion "Donna Noble", who was the runaway bride from the season three Christmas special. Season three companion "Martha Jones" (Freema Agyeman) will reportedly make an appearance by mid-season, which is good! I was really beginning to like Martha.

The spinoff, "The Sarah Jane Adventures", is based on the life of Sarah Jane Smith after her time as a companion is over. Smith is played by Elisabeth Sladen, who originally played the role from 1973 to 1976. She had a cameo in the episode "School Reunion" (a very solid episode, btw), which was effectively the re-introduction of the character. In the new series, Sarah reportedly "...handles alien encounters, mysteries and dangers with the help of her new young friends Maria, Luke and Clyde". It looks like this will be skewed to attract a younger viewing audience, since the "young" friends are all 14 years old and under.

Don't be worried that the show will be too simple for adult viewing, though. Russell T. Davies was quoted as saying "...there's death and despair," he said, "but less violence and more fun. Also, more hugs." Davies also promises villains and heroes from the other two shows will show up on SJA.

You won't be disappointed. In some ways, The Sarah Jane Adventures is more like the old Doctor Who than the current Doctor Who is. It's lots of fun.
