ABC has 'lost' some of it's Sci-Fi nerve. With the success of "Lost", you would think they would try to dip a little deeper in the Sci-Fi water, but instead we get a very shallow offering.
Returning Shows
We still have "Lost". Other than that (and granted, "Lost" by itself is worth a whole lineup of mediocre Sci-Fi), "Pushing Daisies" is still around. Unfortunately, the initial "Daisies" charm has faded for me. It's not a bad show and I am glad it made the cut, but I don't think I would have been sending pies to the network if it had been cancelled.
The only other ABC show that could remotely be considered Sci-Fi is "Eli Stone" - and it's another 'not bad, but wouldn't miss it' type of show.
New Shows
ABC gives us one new offering - "Life on Mars". It's based on the critically acclaimed BBC series about a police detective who gets into a car crash and wakes up 35 years in the past.
The premise is fairly interesting and I am a fan of Colm Meaney, who plays the boss. However, it seems that the target audience might be a bit older than me, since it would seem some knowledge of 1973 might be required to make the details of being sent back 35 years relevant. But, if it is well done, age might not matter. I am just afraid of the possibility of the scripts being a bit heavy-handed (i.e. look how [racist, sexist, polluting, wasteful, etc] we were back then and how enlighted the guy from the future is).
The Outlook
ABC has "Lost" - so it's fine. It's fairly pathetic that they have one new offering...but, we will take what we can get. "Life on Mars" might be a good one, if it is handled correctly. I will be happy if it makes it to a second season, since I am doubtful that "Pushing Daisies" will see a third.
It's interesting how some shows garner enough passion that we send letters and walk in protests (like "Moonlight") and others are decent entertainment, but we could 'take em or leave em'.

I agree with you on Eli Stone. I watch it every week but I wouldn't care if it was canceled. The show is going to need to do something different in season 2 if I'm going to stick around.
