"Lost" vs. "Battlestar Galactica"

SFGate has posted a "TV Show Face-Off". The goal? To determine if "Battlestar Galactica" or "Lost" is the better show. Since these are two of my favorite shows, I thought that I'd weigh in on the debate.

I know that this is a tough call. Notwithstanding my freakish love for "Supernatural", these are clearly two of the best shows on TV. How do you split them? When I started to look at it, I found that, in many ways, they are the same show. To wit:

Both have a large core of central characters that have different opinions about the final goal.
Both are confined to a small area ("Lost" - the island, "Battlestar Galactica" - the ship).
Both are on the run from another group.
Both have fantastic writing and acting.
Both engender "What the heck is going on?" feelings.

For me, the honest truth is that my opinion seems to flip each week. If you had asked me which was best at the end of last season, I would have said "Battlestar Galactica", based on the belief that I thought they had a better idea of where the show was going and had a plan to wow us at the end of the series. I already know that the writers have the capability, since the end of the initial miniseries (remember the "So Say We All" scene) produced that 'wow' feeling for me.

But, after have watched the last few episodes of "Lost", I have just barely edged back into the '"Lost" is best' camp. "Lost" has tied events together amazingly well. I have renewed faith that every episode will be fantastic. I am back watching it on the same night that it broadcasts - and I just don't do that! So, for this week, my answer is "Lost" - and I am sticking to that, unless BSG gives me another 'wow!'.

Count another vote for Lost, although it's great to have two shows I like so much on-air these days.

The opposite is true for me. Lost started out as this really cool "Gilligan's Island on Steroids" show that no one had ever seen before, whereas the current Galactica paled in comparison to the original. It's always been my feeling that if they brought it back, it should've happened years ago, with Richard Hatch's storylines that he developed.

Now, I sit and watch Lost, and I continue to be lost. I have a semblance of what's going on, however, I dread the end, which is roughly another 30 episodes away at this point, whereas with Galactica, they're heading to the end this season, and I'll be left with wanting more. I don't believe that "All Will Be Revealed," unless you take that to simply mean that the final five Cylons will be made known to the humans.

Do you have a guess as to who the last one is? If so, you're probably wrong. I'm going to check THE Message Board, to find out if it's either Starbuck or Baltar....

BSG is clearly the better show. It doesn't leave viewers wondering WTF the answers to the mysteries are, answers are given with some substance and don't leave you hanging, and the plotting is tighter and much less cliched.

BSG gets my vote.

LOST is the absolute best. I enjoy both shows, but LOST gives me the most roller coaster rides. Now if the voting were between Star Trek: The Next Generation and LOST... I'd really have to ponder that one. "Engage!"

I've been on the "Baltar is a cylon" bandwagon for a long time. I think Starbuck is something different.

My theory is that when they get to Earth, they will find a set of statues of the 12 Lords of Kobal - and they will look exactly like the cylon models. That's probably how we will find out the final cylon. That's the cycle - "all of this has happened before" - we are cylons and cylons are us.

Starbuck is the one that can break the cycle somehow.

At least, that's my theory.
