New "Witchblade" Movie

Variety is reporting that a live-action adaptation of the the Top Cow comic, "Witchblade", is scheduled start production in September.

If you are not familar with the "Witchblade", it is basically a metal gauntlet that transforms into a kind of magical body armor. It also confers enormous powers to the wearer, who is a typcially a 'chosen' woman (although this is not always the case).

I was a fan of the TNT version, which was produced in 2001. The series starred Yancy Butler as "Sara Pezzini", who was a tough NY city cop. She, of course, finds the gauntlet and becomes the show's titular hero, albeit with a much more docile costume than what is shown in the comic books. The show is notable for doing a complete reset, erasing all of the events of the first season. Strangely enough, although I really thought it was a lame move at the time, the reset *worked* in this instance and the show continued to improve. Unfortunately, it was cancelled after the second season, which I attribute to Butler's struggle with alcoholism, although it should be noted that the official cancellation notice did not reference the star's issues.

"Witchblade" has a lot of untapped potential. I am looking forward to the movie!
