"X-Files" - Do You Still Believe?

The new "X-Files" movie ("X-Files: I Want to Believe") will be released nationwide on Friday, July 25th. And, although I was a big fan of the series, I am having a hard time convincing myself that this will be a good movie.

In short, I WANT to believe, but I really don't.

Here's what I know about the plot. The movie picks up the story of 'Fox Mulder' and 'Dana Scully' six years after the series finale. It was designed as a stand-alone work, much like the monster-of-the-week episodes that they often had in the series. This particular movie will not advance the X-Files mythology, which lessens my excitement significantly.

Early reviews have not been positive, with the plot called "mundane".

So, will you be going to see it? I will, although whether it be on the big screen or on DVD is still to be decided. I know I have already tempered my expectations.

That said, I really hope that "X-Files: I Want to Believe" generates good revenue. The reason? The rumor is that Chris Carter wants to make one more "X-Files" movie, with a return to the alien invasion mythology (that's what I wanted to hear!). Per the series, the invasion was to commence on December 22, 2012, which is a somewhat important date (as it is the end of the Mayan calender and all).

I can think of no better set of characters to tackle the Mayan 'End of the World' Prophecy than Mulder and Scully. *That* is a movie that I want to see!

I think whether the movie is "good" or not depends on how critical people are when going to see it. Often sequels or 10-years-later movies like this one are viewed with a dubious and extra critical eye. People look for flaws. I can't imagine Chris Carter putting together a bomb, and Duchovny and Anderson together on screen are always terrific. Personally, I plan on going and enjoying myself.
