"Green Lantern" Green Lit

According to the good folks over at Screen Rant, the long awaited "Green Lantern" movie has been officially green lit.

The interesting bit? According to the production notes, it looks like they are going back to the "Hal Jordan" version of GL, rather than the rumored "John Stewart" depiction.

Just as background (for those of you that are not big GL fans), Hal Jordan was Earth's original Green Lantern, while John Stewart was a backup and successor to Jordan. Notably, Stewart is black, which, when thinking of the possible roster for a Justice League movie, would be a solid addition. The JLA is pretty homogenous without him, don't you think?

John Stewart is also the Green Lantern in the popular animated series "Justice League Unlimited", which is probably the only exposure to Green Lantern that kids will have to the character. I know that is true for my kids.

I can argue both sides of this issue, balancing my reverence for Hal Jordan as the original GL with the desire for the Justice League to actually represent a slice of today's culture (I support the casting of a more Mediterranean "Wonder Woman" too), especially when the precendent is right there in the books.

Greg Berlanti ("Dirty, Sexy Money", "Eli Stone") is rumored to be directing. I'll keep an eye out for more news about any casting decisions.

As long as the movie is good, I wouldn't be angry at either character getting the center stage. Given that Hal was first, there's a good argument there, but John Stewart has really been getting screen time everywhere else lately, so I would tend to go with him. Wouldn't it be awesome to see someone like Lawrence Fishburne, or someone with equal gravitas, play John Stewart?

As much as I tend to disregard political correctness, I do tend to think JLA would be entirely white with Hal's character, and Stewart presents the best thing to change in the cast line-up, without introducing a token character. Stewart is a stronger character than most others I could think of.

I'm with tpull on this one. I'm cool with Stewart or Jordan.

Perhaps they can integrate the current mode of the comics with 2 Lanterns per sector and, ina amovie or two, bring in Stewart (which sounds like the plot for a movie, anyway).

It should be John Stewart and he should be played by Will Smith. I'm sick of white folks having all the fun.

If it were to be Stewart, I heard that rapper/actor Common was the leading candidate for the role. Here's his bio (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Common_(rapper))
