There might not be a more hyped debut this fall than tonight's premiere of the new FOX drama, "Fringe". Just as an example, check out this quote from the USA Today:
...J.J. Abrams, the TV auteur who reinvigorated the action/adventure drama with Alias and Lost and now adds the best new show of the fall, Fringe. And this time, our guide promises he'll be easier to follow.
Hmmm..."Lost" and "Alias", only better - expectations are extremely high! Most every review that I have read has been postive, with the most critical being the LA Times, who called it "...an uneven but promising jumble of horror, thriller and comedy" - which, when I think about it, really isn't all that bad.
I am on-board and have the TiVo set up. The only feeling of foreboding that I have centers on that comment that "Fringe" will be "easier to follow". I know that the networks want shows to have easy entry points, so that new viewers can start viewing later in the season without feeling like they can never catch up (unlike, say, "Lost"). In itself, the goal may be admirable. However, ease of access can also make a show appear 'dumbed down', which would be a tragic flaw for an "X-Files"-like show.
Hopefully, "Fringe" will live up to the hype, and be both smart *and* accessible. The show premieres tonight at 8:00 PM EST (7:00 PM CST).
"X-Files" is a key reference, but don't forget its' sister show (okay... second cousin) "Millennium" in the late 90's.
It had an FBI guy (profiler), odd paranomalish happenings, a 'Massive' conspiracy, a 'viral contagion'... Oh... and Terry O'Quinn too
