Just Re-Read "Watchmen"

I was debating on re-reading "Watchmen". I know that the movie adaptation is in production and the marketing campaign is continuing over at Rorschachs Journal, so it was not a slam dunk to pick up the book again. Movie adaptations never live up to the book, so why disappoint myself?

Yet, as I was walking through the library with my kids, I was draw to the graphic novel section. There it was. The seminal graphic novel. I couldn't resist - so I fired up the old library card and checked it out.

It's still pretty good.

Even after 20 years, the source material holds up very well. It's actually very topical for today's world, with its exploration of war and single country supremacy. "Watchmen" is not sugar coated - its sexy, dark, gritty and brutal.

The movie will have to leave out some storylines, though. There is a lot going on and, typically, much of it is depicted in parallel. I don't envy Zack Snyder's job in directing this into a watchable piece.

However, the casting looks great. Jeffrey Dean Morgan as "The Comedian" is inspired, and I'll never argue with Carla Gugino ("Sally Jupiter") in anything. According to the IMDB, "Watchmen" is scheduled to be released on March 6th, 2009 - so you have plenty of time to pick up the novel yourself!

FYI... It's funny how you mention the Rorschach's Journal site when that place has been inactive for months. All of the Watchmen movie buzz is over at http://www.WatchmenComicMovie.com and their forum.

Good catch! This is what happens when you have an idea...then wait a few months to actually *do* the idea.
