NASA Space Station Naming Contest

In a public relations move, NASA decided to have a contest to name the new addition ('Node 3') to the International Space Station. They came up with four possible names, with open public voting to determine the winner. The options were:

  • Earthrise (obtained 9% of the vote)
  • Legacy (13%)
  • Serenity (70%)
  • Venture (8%)

Woohoo! Serenity wins! My favorite ship from my favorite cancelled show (do I even have say it was "Firefly") wins!

I wish it were true...but, not so fast. NASA decided to allow a write-in ballot also. And, to their chagrin, Stephen Colbert decided to see if he could influence the vote by asking the viewers of his show ("The Colbert Report", which is hilarious, btw) to vote for him.

Thus, by a winning margin of over 40,000 votes, the winner of the contest is "Colbert".

Now, it remains to be seen if NASA will actually let Node 3 get the name of "Colbert". The actual decision will be made in April - but for now, the ISS has a "Colbert" room!
