"True Blood" Season 2
The season two debut of "True Blood" is a little more that a week away!
SC FI Wire recently interviewed creator/executive producer Alan Ball to get a preview of the new season. I've got to say - it sounds pretty promising.
According to the article, this season is loosely based on the second book in Charlaine Harris' Sookie Stackhouse Series, "Living Dead in Dallas" (which probably will end up on my summer reading list, now that I think of it).
The article states several items that I think bode very well for the show. To wit (quoting Mr. Ball himself):
- "The episodes are not self-contained. You know, you gotta be involved in the story, and you gotta know what's going on." I love the fact that they are not going for the stand-alone episode model. Plots are good!
- We find out more about Maryann (played by Michelle Forbes), and ""she's got an agenda, and it's not a good one." Of course, we knew that her relationship with Tara was going to end badly...but it's nice to hear the confirmation.
- Ball's general attitude about the genre is awesome. He says, ""The challenges for me are to remain very true to the spirit of Charlaine's books and the world and the characters. To not just go, like, 'Oh, it's supernatural, so we can do this. Wouldn't it be fun?' without keeping it rooted in the characters' emotional lives." I think Ball just gets it - all good shows are ultimately about the relationships between the characters, and obeying the rules that you set up as a storyteller.
"True Blood" kicks off its second season on HBO on Sunday, June 14 at 9:00 PM ET.
