FOX is playing games with Sci-Fi again. This time, it's Ronald D. Moore ("Battlestar Galactica") that they are stringing along, with his new series concept "Virtuality".
On Friday (June 26th) at 8:00 PM, what *should* have been a series premiere will air. But, as FOX seems to have something against original shows, this debut is now most likely a standalone movie.
"Virtuality" has a very interesting premise. Basically, the idea is that there are 12 crew members aboard a spacecraft known as the Phaeton. The twist is that there are surveillance cameras onboard, and the lives and feuds between the crew are viewed back on Earth as a reality series (I can't believe FOX didn't jump on this concept).
The other interesting part of the show is the virtual reality sessions that the crew members partake in during their downtime. They basically have a holodeck for entertainment on the Phaeton. But, of course, something is wrong in the virtual world which causes these fantasies to go awry - and will also affect the day to day relationships between the crew members.
The cast of the show is strong, headlined by Nikolaj Coster-Waldau ("New Amsterdam") as Commander Frank Pike, and the always good Clea Duvall as Sue Parsons. Coupled with Moore's leadership, I think this concept, as a series, would have great promise.
Wired has a detailed review of the show posted and notes that "...strong viewer response could persuade Fox execs to order a season’s worth of 'Virtuality'. So, watch it! I'll provide my own review this weekend.
