Key Points from "Exodus, Part 2"

Season 1, Episode 24
Episode Air Date: 05/25/05

Point 1
Jack

Locke

Kate

Hurley

Rousseau

Arzt
In articles and interviews leading up to the season 1 conclusion, the "Lost" creators touted a finale that answers a few mysteries but cracks open a slew of new ones.

They weren't lying.

So let's get to it.

"Exodus, Part 2" picks up the hatch plotline from "Exodus, Part 1," which is nice since there were plenty of Big Questions swirling around when the first installment concluded. When we left the castaways, the beach and cave dwellers were quivering in fear, concerned that a shadowy group known as "The Others" would descend that night on the camps and lay waste to the Oceanic 815 survivors. Or something like that. The "threat" was never completely spelled out because it originated from the island's least credible source, Crazy Danielle Rousseau.

Dubiousness aside, Locke and Jack hatched (har har) a plan to hide the castaways in the seemingly impenetrable hatch. To this point the hatch has never actually been opened, but Locke and Jack believe that a couple sticks of dynamite will bust a hole in that big-ass breadmaker. And it just so happens that an ancient stash of dynamite is hidden at the Black Rock.

Wait, let me rephrase. An ancient stash of dynamite is hidden in the Black Rock. As we learned last week, the Black Rock is actually an old wooden ship that's beached miles inland. Where the ship came from and how it got there are questions for a future episode. As far as "Exodus, Part 2" is concerned, the Black Rock is good for only one thing: highly volatile explosives.

In the first "Exodus" Locke and Jack teamed with Kate, Hurley, Arzt and Rousseau to retrieve the dynamite. In this episode, the castaways venture into the Black Rock and bring forth ...

KABOOM!

Oh, pardon me. Arzt just blew up.

I'm not kidding. Arzt BLOWS UP at the beginning of this episode. Let me backtrack because this is pretty important. Upon arriving at the Black Rock, the cranky high school science teacher (Arzt) launches into a lecture on the dangers of old dynamite, noting that ancient TNT "sweats" unstable nitroglycerine. Arzt pontificates on nitroglycerine while he gingerly handles a dilapidated stick of dynamite ... and just as his lecture starts to get truly boring, a loud BANG! rings out and wee bits of Arzt rain down on the castaways. Arzt is no more.

And that's when we see, first hand, that the Black Rock's dynamite is not to be toyed with. Nonetheless, Locke and Jack decide to push forward with their hatch plan (Arzt is mourned for 30 seconds by Hurley and Kate, which is the union minimum bereavement period for three-episode guest stars). What ensues is a tension-filled scene wherein Locke delicately transfers six sticks of dynamite into two different backpacks. Locke attempts to inject a little levity into the proceedings by asking Jack if he ever played Operation (perhaps he forgot that Jack actually performed operations) and then, just as he's lifting a particularly gnarly stick, Locke lets out a loud "BZZZZZZ!" Ha ha. Funny one John.

Anyway, after Locke and Jack successfully transfer the dynamite, Kate demands that she be one of the two people to carry the explosives. Kate sees this as a redeeming moment that will strike her past transgressions from the record (her criminal history recently became public knowledge). Jack, however, isn't keen on seeing his future love interest pull an Arzt, so he puffs out his chest and says her involvement is out of the question. Locke swoops in to solve the standoff by offering to draw straws. Ultimately, Kate and Locke draw short straws, thereby giving them the unenviable task of hauling the explosive cargo. But hey, they get to be heroes, so they've got that going for them.

With the grandstanding out of the way, the foursome finally heads back to the hatch. Foursome? That's right! I didn't screw up the numbers. Arzt was vaporized and Rousseau (who I didn't mention) opted to leave the castaways early on (for reasons that will become very clear in a moment). And so the group of six is now down to four ... and those four people really need to boogie since dusk has descended and The Others will be arriving soon.

But there's a wee problem ... the journey back to the hatch isn't going to be easy. First off, Kate and Locke are lugging backpacks full of explosives, so every step they take needs to be careful and solid. And then there's that monster/security system thing, which of course reappears.

The monster pops up about mid-way through the group's journey and once again, the castaways employ a variety of escape techniques. Jack, Kate and Hurley run like spooked bunnies, but Locke opts for the "Stand there in awe technique." He removes his dynamite-laden bag and opens his eyes wide, anticipating the monster's arrival. In the past, this technique has served Locke quite well (remember, he's the only castaway who has actually looked upon the monster and lived to tell the tale). But on this day the monster must be a little crankier than usual because the beast decides to rip up a couple of nearby trees and scare the living crap out of Locke. Seeing that his monster buddy isn't in a happy mood, Locke runs like hell but is quickly tripped up by some sort of force. Yes, I realize this is incredibly ambiguous, but I think that's the point -- the monster is present and it's doing things but how it does what it does is not clear at all. All we know is that Locke is suddenly grabbed around the ankles by "something" and then pulled violently across the jungle floor. Jack sees Locke whip by and he quickly gives chase, running hard and LEAPING at just the right moment to catch Locke's outstretched arms. Both Locke and Jack continue to be pulled, but a big hole suddenly opens in front of the pair and Locke is sucked two-thirds of the way down. The monster continues to tug at Locke's legs from below while Jack clings to Locke's arms. Kate rushes in and Jack yells for her to get the dynamite from his backpack. Kate is momentarily confused since she thought she was hauling the dynamite, but she realizes this isn't really the time for discussion. So she reaches into Jack's pack and pulls forth a boom stick. Locke pleads with her not to throw it -- he believes the monster won't hurt him -- but Jack yells at Kate to chuck the friggin stick into the hole. Kate hauls off and throws the dynamite in ... and seconds later a muffled blast burps from deep within hole. Smoke and small debris travel skyward. And it's at this exact moment that we briefly see the monster.

Don't get too excited. We don't see all of the monster. In fact, there's nothing identifiable at all. Nonetheless, we definitely see "something."

This "something" is going to inspire ungodly amounts of summer conjecture (mission accomplished, "Lost" crew!). To my untrained eye, the "something" looks like a fast-moving, translucent vapor that disassembles and then reassembles very quickly. It's ghostly, yet it apparently has the ability to interact with the environment since it tosses giant trees with ease and latches onto Locke's leg like a supernatural leech. Is this the monster? Is this the "security system" Rousseau mentioned? Probably, but then again, who knows? As it stands, this is the only monster visual we've seen, and I'm sure we'll be seeing and hearing plenty about it in the months to come.

One other monster thing: the beast has a new noise. Previously, we've heard the horn-like call that echoes through the forest whenever the monster appears, but in this episode we also hear a mechanical noise that sounds like chain links being pulled through a pulley. This noise was most prevalent when Locke was being yanked through the forest. What's it mean? Hell if I know. But it was there!

Getting back to the action ... Kate's dyno-mite throw into the hole causes the beast to release Locke. Jack hauls Locke out of the hole and the foursome soon resumes its trek back to the camp. As the march carries on, Locke and Jack separate a bit from Hurley and Kate. The distance offers a perfect opportunity for a well-timed confrontation. Jack comes right out and asks Locke why he was willing to be sucked down that monster hole. Locke says it was simply a test; he knew the beast wouldn't hurt him. Jack is incredulous. Locke notes that he and Jack don't often see eye to eye because Jack is a man of science and Locke is a man of faith. Moreover, Locke tells Jack that the castaways' arrival on the island is not coincidental. Locke believes they were all brought to the island by the island. It's destiny, Locke says. Jack buys none of this -- he asks if Boone was part of that destiny and Locke, without missing a beat, says that Boone was a sacrifice the island demanded. You can almost hear the blood vessel pop in Jack's head. Jack says he doesn't believe in destiny, but Locke, as always, has the final say: "Yes you do. You just don't know it yet."

Alas, there's little time for this destiny stuff because nightfall has arrived and the hatch remains sealed. Fortunately, Locke, Jack, Kate and Hurley soon arrive at the breadmaker to bring forth the Explosive Moment of Hatch Revelation.

Locke, Jack and Kate carefully arrange the dynamite on top of the hatch while Hurley scurries away to safely store the secondary dynamite supply. A long fuse is laid out and Locke takes position at the end, match in hand. Kate and Jack retreat a short way's off, out of earshot of Locke. Their distance from Locke is important because Jack and Kate have a very short -- but extremely significant -- exchange. Kate is still huffy about Jack's switching of the dynamite bags; she really wanted to be the hero. Jack says he made a leadership decision and if she doesn't like it she can cram one of those extra dynamite sticks right up her ... well, he doesn't say that, but he should. But then the conversation quickly turns to a different topic. Jack tells Kate that if they all survive this night, there's going to be a "Locke problem" in the future. He asks Kate if she'll have his back in the days and weeks to come. Kate, without hesitating, tells Jack she'll back him up. It's clear that an island rift is on the horizon.

But the rift will have to wait because there's a hatch that needs to be blown up. Just as Locke is about to light the fuse, Hurley walks back toward the hatch. He briefly loses his footing and drops his flashlight. When he bends to pick up the light, he notices small numbers engraved into breadmaker's lid ... UH OH.

Casting the light upon the hatch, Hurley sees six numbers: 4 8 15 16 23 42. "Stop! Stop! You can't do this!" Hurley screams as he scurries toward Locke. Locke, seeing that the big man is on a mission, quickly lights the fuse. Hurley rushes in and tries to stomp on the flame, but Jack runs out and tackles Hurley before the fuse extinguishes. Jack and Hurley fall to the ground as the fuse zips toward the dynamite ...

BOOOOOM!

Flames and debris crackle into the night sky.

As the smoke clears, Locke, Jack, Hurley and Kate step close to the hatch to admire their handiwork. The top of the hatch has come unhinged (it's about damn time!). Locke and Jack struggle to push the hatch's top to the side, but it gives way. In its place is a dark chasm. Locke moves a torch in front of the hatch hole as the camera angle shifts to within the hatch. Suddenly, the camera drops backwards into the hatch, its lens pointed skyward. We see four narrow metal walls and a ladder. But that's all we get. The scene ends.

Point 2
Rousseau

Claire

Sayid

Charlie

Baby
Earlier I mentioned that Rousseau ditched the other castaways at the Black Rock. There was a reason for this ... a big reason.

After leaving the dynamite crew, Rousseau rushes back to the beach camp. Emerging from the woods, she spots Claire and Charlie as they tend to Claire's baby. Rousseau screams for Sayid. She needs Sayid. Charlie says Sayid is leading the beach castaways back to the cave camps, but Rousseau has no time for such paltry explanations. She demands to see Sayid. So Charlie runs off to find him (and to escape the screaming French lady).

Big mistake, Charlie.

Seconds after Charlie leaves, Rousseau's demeanor changes. The lines in her face soften and she gets a real wacky look. She asks Claire if she can hold the baby. Claire clutches the child closer and tries to change the subject. But Rousseau is hellbent on holding that goddamn kid. Rousseau extends her hands and asks Claire why she won't let her hold the baby. Claire looks down and sees deep scratches on Rousseau's arm. Suddenly, a flash of recognition overwhelms Claire. She remembers a struggle with screaming and slashing. Claire looks up. "Why did I scratch you?" Claire asks as she takes a step back. Rousseau doesn't respond.

The scene cuts to Charlie running up a path toward Sayid. As he reaches him, shouting rings out from the beach. Sayid and Charlie sprint back to find a hysterical Claire holding a bloody cloth against a fresh head wound. Both Rousseau and the baby are gone.

For some strange reason, Charlie decides that this is Sayid's fault, and so he hauls off and sucker punches Sayid in the face. But before he can unload a second punch, Sayid snares Charlie's throat and calmly warns him not to do that again. This isn't the time for blame ... and besides, Sayid knows where Rousseau is going (and he could kill Charlie 2,000 different ways).

Sayid believes that Rousseau is making a deal with The Others -- she aims to trade Claire's baby boy for her long-lost daughter Alex. With this in mind, Sayid and Charlie grab a couple of pistols (Jack has entrusted Sayid with the gun case) and head off to find the source of the black smoke billowing up from the other side of the island (the smoke first emerged in "Exodus, Part 1"). In Sayid's mind, smoke = The Others.

Like all "Lost" expeditions, this one is unusually eventful. Sayid and Charlie sprint through the jungle, but Charlie's conditioning isn't what it used to be, so the pair pause so Charlie can catch his breath. Sayid's pausing location is unfortunate -- they're right next to the downed Beechcraft airplane (aka "The Place Where Boone Got Crushed"). Now what would make the Beechcraft particularly interesting to Charlie? Could it be the copious amounts of heroin stashed in the plane? Sayid unwittingly shows Charlie that the plaster virgin mary statues littering the crash site are actually full of heroin. As Sayid turns to walk off, Charlie takes a long, hungry look at the small bags of heroin resting by his feet.

Shortly thereafter, Sayid and Charlie stumble upon a baby blanket sitting under a big tree. Charlie -- the dumbass -- runs in and grabs the blanket, thinking it holds the baby. But it's a trick -- Charlie opens the blanket to find a log ... and that's when a big net of stones opens up from above and rains rocks upon Charlie's head. Charlie dodges the biggest boulders, but the rocks open a gash on his forehead. Sayid realizes that desperate measures are necessary, so he flips through his mental survival guide and decides that cauterizing the wound is the best solution. He cracks a bullet and spills gunpowder into Charlie's head gash, and then he sparks a match and seals the wound closed in an excruciating flash. Sayid's makeshift first aid does the trick, but right about now Charlie could use a heavy painkiller. Interestingly, his medicine of choice has just been restocked ... hmmm ...

But there's no time for a heroin binge! As night falls, Sayid and Charlie cut through the last swath of jungle and emerge on a sliver of beach. Nearby, giant flames and billowing black smoke leap from a sturdy pyre. Sayid and Charlie draw their pistols and cautiously move toward the fire, but they see that the beach is abandoned and the sand is clear of footprints. Suddenly, a baby's cries filter in from the tree line. Sayid calls for Rousseau to emerge (who else would it be?). Rousseau steps forth with the baby in her arms. Tears well in her eyes as she confirms Sayid's suspicions. She says she was going to trade the baby for Alex, but The Others never showed. Sayid gingerly retrieves the child and hands him to Charlie. With the baby safe in his arms, Charlie's confidence swells. He accuses Rousseau of being certifiably nutty (a fair accusation) and he says Rousseau was the one who started the fire. Rousseau denies this -- she says the jungle whispers told her The Others were "coming for the boy." She was simply there to make the trade.

As it turns out, Rousseau isn't entirely wrong about the "boy" thing ... but we'll get to that in a minute.

With the baby successfully retrieved, Sayid and Charlie make the long trip back to the cave camps. They arrive as heroes -- Claire's face lights up as Charlie strides into camp with her son in his arms. Nearby, Shannon notices Sayid's arrival and rushes to embrace him. Oh joy.

Moments later, Claire and Charlie sit side by side, tending to the baby. The camera pans back and we see Charlie's bag; nestled within is his very own Virgin Mary statue. Coming in season 2: A Very Special Intervention Episode.

Baby Naming Sidenote: Claire finally names the kid. His name is Aaron. Claire says she doesn't know the meaning behind this name, but we all know the writers wouldn't go out of their way to introduce this name without doing their homework. So Claire, this one's for you:

Aaron (n) -- Meaning: shining light, high mountain, messenger, plot device in a baby blanket.
And just in case the closed-captioning was wrong ...
Erin (n) -- Meaning: peace, western island.
Point 3
Michael

Jin

Sawyer

Walt
The rafters have successfully drifted away from shore. The sea is calm and the sun is shining and their journey is off to a smashing beginning. Too bad it's all about to go to hell.

The majority of this episode's raft scenes aim to develop characters. Ultimately, these character segments are window dressing, so here are the high points (much bigger developments await):

  • The raft's rudder breaks off, so Sawyer heroically dives in to save it. Michael, Walt and Jin are duly impressed.

  • Sawyer and Michael bond over music (Sawyer sings Bob Marley's "Redemption Song" -- oh sure, no symbolism there).

  • Michael offers his gold watch to Jin, but Jin hands it back to Michael as a token of respect/friendship/seamanship. This is significant because the same watch prompted a nasty fight between Michael and Jin earlier in the season.

  • A brief Jin flashback sequence set at the Sydney airport reveals that Jin's boss (Sun's father) sent a henchman to spy on Jin and Sun. The henchman tells Jin that Sun's father knows about their plan to escape and he isn't going to let it happen. Jin is very sad about this. Fortunately, he'll soon be in a horrific plane crash!

  • A Michael-Walt airport flashback reveals that Michael asked his mother to take Walt, but Michael's mom nixed the idea. Walt may have overheard this conversation. Whoops.
Alright, now we can get to the good stuff. As night falls, Michael, Sawyer and Jin fire up the raft's radar (provided by Sayid). Moments later, a blip pops on screen. Sawyer and Walt urge Michael to launch a flare, but Michael hesitates because he only has one cartridge. As the blip begins to move out of range, Michael points the gun skyward and launches the flare. Suddenly, the radar blip reverses direction and makes a beeline for the raft. The rafters are ecstatic.

Moments later, a small boat motors up and flashes a spotlight on the raft. A bearded man stands behind the spotlight. Two other mean are in the stern of the boat and a woman is in the boat's small cabin.

They're saved!

NO! THEY'RE NOT!

Ladies and gentlemen, prepare for an epic twist.

The burly bearded man calls out to the rafters and asks how the rafters got so far out here. Michael, overwhelmed by what appears to be imminent rescue, excitedly tells the man that they're survivors of flight 815 and that other survivors are still on the island.

"Well ain't that something!" the bearded man exclaims.

But then he says ...

"Only the thing is, we're gonna have to take the boy."

EXCUSE ME?!

The smiles drop. The excitement evaporates. Michael, Jin and Sawyer sense that something is about to go very wrong.

Michael tells the boaters that he's not giving them anyone. As he says this, Sawyer slowly reaches around and grabs the pistol hidden behind his back.

Suddenly, the bearded man cuts the spotlight. Sawyer whips the gun around, but a shot rings out from the boat, sending Sawyer overboard. Jin dives in after him.

Two of the boaters jump to the raft. One grabs Walt while the other attacks Michael. Michael struggles, but he's quickly overtaken and tossed off the raft. Walt is snatched up and moved to the boat. Michael pops up in the water near the raft, calling out to Walt. Just then, the woman in the boat's cabin chucks an explosive device onto the raft. The raft explodes in flames as the boat drives off. Walt's screams dissipate as Michael vainly calls out for his son.

And then the scene ends.

Whoa nellie. I certainly didn't see that one coming. Who knew that Rousseau would have the right message, but the wrong boy?!

And now we've got some Very Big Questions: Who are these people? Where did they come from? What do they want with Walt? Where did they get the boat? And the fuel? And the guns? Why did the bearded guy speak with an American accent? Was the woman on the boat Rousseau's long-lost daughter? Is Sawyer critically wounded? How will the rafters get back to the island? Will Driveshaft's next album go platinum?

And that's just the beginning! I'm sure hundreds of questions will emerge over the summer.

Point 4
Hurley This episode featured the same small backstory segments seen in "Exodus, Part 1." Basically, each backstory shows how the main castaways came to be on Oceanic 815. The most intriguing of these segments was Hurley's. Those damn numbers just keep popping up.

Hurley is shown waking up late at his Sydney hotel. The electricity in his hotel room has shorted, knocking out his alarm clock. He's panicked because he only has a few minutes to catch his flight back to the U.S. What transpires is a comedy of errors -- and hidden numbers. Below you'll find a few "hidden" elements that popped up during this segment (there could be many that I missed -- please post the ones you saw in the comments area):

  • Hurley's car blows a tire on the way to the airport. The dashboard reads: 42 KM; 23 degrees celsius; 16 KPH then 15 KPH then 8 KPH and finally 4 KPH.

  • Hurley pays an old man $1,600 to use his electric scooter.

  • Hurley zips by six girls wearing team jerseys. They're wearing numbers 4 8 15 16 23 and 42, in that order.

  • Hurley sees a sign reading "Gates 14 thru 23."

  • Oceanic 815 takes off from Gate 23.
Incidentally, the numbers also pop up twice in this episode's island events. As already mentioned, Hurley sees the numbers on the hatch, but he also has a brief conversation with Kate about one of the numbers: 23. Kate tells Hurley that the Australian man who turned her in got a $23,000 reward.

One last Hurley connector -- Hurley's backstory links him to the spanish comic book that Walt is seen reading earlier in the season (it's the comic book with the polar bear). Hurley reads the same comic book on Oceanic 815.

That's it for now -- and for this season! Be sure to drop by our "Lost" Forum for stimulating conversation and conjecture.

Next Episode:
"Pilot, Part 1" -- Before hatches, numbers and monsters became part of our lexicon, "Lost" was just a new show with promise. See how it all began. Airs: Wednesday, June 1, 10 p.m., ABC.

I'd say there's probably plenty of symbolism in the Bob Marley 'Redemption Song', seeing as it's all about pirates and slavery...

Redemption Song by Bob Marley

Old pirates yes they rob I
Sold I to the merchant ships
Minutes after they took I from the
Bottom less pit
But my hand was made strong
By the hand of the almighty
We forward in this generation triumphantly
All I ever had is songs of freedom
Won't you help to sing these songs of freedom
Cause all I ever had redemption songs, redemption songs

Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery
None but ourselves can free our minds
Have no fear for atomic energy
Cause none of them can stop the time
How long shall they kill our prophets
While we stand aside and look
Some say it's just a part of it
We've got to fulfill the book

Won't you help to sing, these songs of freedom
Cause all I ever had, redemption songs, redemption songs, redemption songs

Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery
None but ourselves can free our minds
Have no fear for atomic energy
Cause none of them can stop the time
How long shall they kill our prophets
While we stand aside and look
Yes some say it's just part of it
We've got to fulfill the book

Won't you help to sing, these songs of freedom
Cause all I ever had, redemption songs
All I ever had, redemption songs
These songs of freedom, songs of freedom

For those of you who have Tivo as I do, pause it where Hugo is in the domestic part of the Oceanic airport. After the lady takes his passport, you briefly see the computer. Not only is the flight number 815, at gate 23, but you will see that the flight leaves at 15:16 (3:16 pm). That is just another instance where the numbers could mean something more...

Emily -- Nice catch! I *knew* that computer screen had something on it, but I couldn't make it out! Thanks for posting this.

#3. Posted by: Mac at May 26, 2005 12:41 PM

And another thing I just caught, Hugo is in room 2342 and on floor 23 as you can see when he is about to get onto the elevator that is too full. I may be back with more...I'm watching over the show again.

Just a thought, but does anyone else think that the lady who threw the explosives onto the U.S.S. Michael just might have been Rosseau's daughter, Alex?

#5. Posted by: Emily at May 26, 2005 12:47 PM

I think there is a very good chance the bomb-tossing woman on the boat was Rousseau's daughter. According to Rousseau, her daughter was taken at birth, 16 years ago. Did the woman on the boat look 16? It was hard to tell with only quick glances.

Locke asking Jack what he believes - Locke saying he's a man of faith.

All the survivors we know have had an experience where they
are in need of forgiveness. Kate nearly killed her mother,
Jin (Korean guy) was a "hit man" for his father-in-law, Jack and
his drunk father killed a patient. Heck even a crippled man walks
on the island - as if her was once blind but now can see. They
all seem to be wandering disciples - awaiting some leader.

With that, there's the creepy hatch - where's it lead? To the
others, and where's it go? Others, who undoubtedly are evil,
live way below the earth's surface. What else lies deep in the
earth's surface?

Then there's Walt's Dad. What a patriarch. He was even described
as having the patience of a saint by Sawyer. Walt wasn't even "part
of the plan" as told to his mother by Walt's dad. So what else out
there is not part of the plan - what is never known when it will actually
happen?

But what gave it away the most for me was the way the others
"held" Walt in the scene as their boat pulled away. Two of the others
held Walt's arms up on both sides - as if he was on a cross.

#7. Posted by: Trip at May 27, 2005 8:34 AM

I have to say..that last comment is purely beautiful. Very well thought out - but then what about the numbers?

I mean if this is some holy parable then surely such numbers have divine significance? I think its brilliant the way you've just described it...that they had it wrong the whole time, that Walt is actually the kid that they want, not Claire's.

But then how can you explain Claire's meeting with the psychic and his influence on Claire's current position? Surely Aaron is significant as well - Perhaps Walt is the Anti-christ and Aaron is the Messiah?

...ehh maybe not. Its too early for that kind of talk. Ah well..another mystery.

Very interesting insight though.

#8. Posted by: Tyler at May 27, 2005 11:46 AM

On second thought...I know that the reference probably has no credability, but look here:

http://www.oceanic-air.com/trackresults.htm

Uhh..scheduled arrival time for flight 815?

03:16.

#9. Posted by: Tyler at May 27, 2005 11:53 AM

Then there's the number of survivors who we follow,
exactly 12!

1) Jack

2) Kate

3) Charlie

4) Hurley

5) Shannon

Walt - at the center of the "table"

6) Sayid

7) Michael

8) Sawyer

9)Locke

10) Jin

11) Sun

12) Claire

And now thanks to this last deduction, we can assume
Claire really gave birth to the antichrist - whom the psychic said should never be brought to this earth. Lost is a veritable showdown of good and evil. Don't even get me started on
the holy trinity - The Father, the Son, and the Holy - oh my,
just what was that spectre-like smoke from the security
system? The Holy Smoke?

Aaron was the brother of Moses in the Bible. So, that is yet another bible connection they've thrown in.

From the Hebrew name Aharon which is most likely of unknown Egyptian origin. Other theories claim a Hebrew derivation, and suggest meanings such as "high mountain" or "exalted". In the Old Testament Aaron was the older brother of Moses and the first high priest of the Israelites.

When does the new season of lost start??? if someone could answer thanks

#12. Posted by: joe at May 29, 2005 1:08 AM

I'm not sure if this was implied in a previous message, but the arrival time, 3:16, could come from the famed verse in John's gospel, "For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son..."

Also another thought - if the 12 diciples reference is really part of the show, who is going to pull a Judas and betray the team?

#13. Posted by: JC at May 29, 2005 3:38 AM

Joe -- Season 2 will likely begin sometime in September.

#14. Posted by: mac at May 29, 2005 11:06 AM

Am I the only one to notice the title of the Episode, "Exodus". Take a look at the bible Exodus chapter 4, versus 8, 15, 16, and 23. There is mention of "miracles so the Isrealites would believe", giving Aaron (Moses' brother) as a spokesman to God, and letting his son go. Then there were 42 survivors from the crash. Sounds very biblical to me.

#15. Posted by: MW at May 29, 2005 7:19 PM

actually it was 49. and this is completely off topic but i have... no had a theory about the hatch: i thought the hatch was a nuclear weapon.
this would explain "the carriers" Rousseau mentioned. carriers of a desease. maybe the hatch went bio. the reason i think the hatch is there in the first place is because during the cold war it was put there (unmapped islands are sometimes hiding places for nuclear weapons) and forgotten. the numbers on it indicate the name of the nuke. earlier Rousseau mentioned that those numbers where being repeated by a radio tower on the island. i think this was a launch signal. also in hurleys show that lady said that her husband (the only one who found the numbers first) heard it on a radio or something. he intercepted the message for the nuke to be launched. this would explain why walt does not want it opened (hes psychic). but it doesnt explain why the numbers are "lucky".

woooo. that was a lot for me.

#16. Posted by: jake at May 29, 2005 8:46 PM

trip-
As for the table comment, Da Vinci was way off on his painting of the last supper (a traditional Passover meal). As the host Jesus (or Walt for this purpose) would have had the second seat from the left (if you are facing the table). The guest of honor would have had the first.

#20. Posted by: blues at June 1, 2005 1:22 PM

Has anyone read Michael Crichton's book PREY? Not that you should, but you might want to. Although it is pretty sci-fi, it would explain A LOT of what is going on, including characters returning, shape shifting, etc. etc.

And the battle is almost certainly going to be about faith and evidence. What does a person of faith believe when their prayers aren't answered? vs what does a person who only believes in evidence do when there is no plausible explanation for events?

I'm probably reaching here, but when it comes right down to it, that is what John 3:16 is all about.

#21. Posted by: Skredcard at June 2, 2005 12:39 PM

Right after the raft runs into the log and the rudder falls off, Sawyer jumps into the ocean to retrieve it. As Michael is pulling him back onto the raft, he stands up, and you can *very* briefly see the Others' boat in the upper right-hand corner of the screen. When the camera pans back over a second later, as Michael is handing Sawyer his shirt and the just-discovered gun, the boat is not there anymore. As if everything else didn't, this suggests that there is a ghostly/supernatural element to these Others. It's as though they are always present, but can only be revealed and do their bad-guy stuff in the cloak of darkness. As long as they've been on the island though, what is prompting the Others to finally reveal themselves now? And what about our dear departed Ethan? Was he one of the Others? Surely Danielle would have known if there was someone else on the island for the past 16 years. But why did he go after Claire instead of Walt? Was he, like Danielle, mislead by the voices on the island into thinking they wanted the baby? Or are there different groups of Others? Are there two sides, playing with different pieces, like a game of Backgammon...?

#22. Posted by: Strichek at June 4, 2005 2:47 PM

I just have one comment to make: before a post with something like 'Claire really gave birth to the antichrist - whom the psychic said should never be brought to this earth.', the facts shhould be confirmed.

The psychic NEVER said that her baby shouldn't be born. He said that Claire must raise the baby. Big difference in my book...

#23. Posted by: TrueWatcher at June 10, 2005 2:14 AM

i bet the others finally revealed themselves to get walt (which they abviosly need) because they beleive he is either the savior or the antichrist. i think the others are planning for an oppocolypse (damn i know i spelled that wrong) and walt will play a crucial part in their plan. and yes ethan IS one of the others. i actually think hes Rousseaus son. remember she never said what gender her child was. and alex is bothe a male and female name. oh yeah and strichek. that last quote: brilliant. the game backgammon has been throughout the whole show. how much money did hurley owe walt? 42,000 dollars. how many spaces are there on a backgammon board. 23. again: brilliant. and skredcard you said: What does a person of faith believe when their prayers aren't answered? and what does a person who only believes in evidence do when there is no plausible explanation for events? also brilliant. first the faithful person stops believing and becomes unfaithful. stops beleiving. and the man of science has to except that there might just be a higher power. he becomes faithful. in short the religios man turns to science while the scientific man turns to religion.

Hey Mac

I love your reviews. I'm in a LOST flashback location Sydney, Australia.

We are only up to ... In Translation and I have cheated by reading your entertaining reviews up to season 1 end. I can't help it its sooo frustrating waiting every week for the next clue here so I've hit the fast-forward thanks to you ...

Can I say what you write is very funny but I think its even better to watch each episode after first reading your review.

I think what I find best about LOST is how it draws in and melts together a number of themes and references but at the same time tying it all together.

Iraq, the Bible, philosophy, numerology, the US government, reality, the sub conscious, the purpose of life, the afterlife, conspiracy, good v evil.

I could go on ?

Scott.

#26. Posted by: Scott at June 16, 2005 8:36 PM

Well thanks Scott! I'm glad you enjoy them.

Just make sure you don't take any Oceanic flights from Sydney to L.A. ;)

a backgammon boad has 24 spaces not 23.
4 parts six in each.

I just wanted to point out something.the first book sawyer reads is warship down which is a book about rabbits starting a new colony by working together despite there differences (sound fimiliar)and that book has 16 chapters (again with those numbers).Anyway the 2nd book he reads is called a wrinkle in time wich is a book about time travel...there are alot of lost therios that involve time travel and that book has 23 chapters...

and another thing apparently there was a deleted seen were sayid asked the french women what her team came to the island to study...and she replies time

#30. Posted by: jess at July 1, 2005 12:04 AM

o.k. your probaly getting sick of me but appartntly in some script notes leaked online, the unseen monster that’s been terrorizing the survivors is described as a “primordial mapinguari”- what the ? is that

#31. Posted by: jess at July 1, 2005 12:18 AM

want to see a preview 4 lost series 2 getting to it involves some major nerd-savvy. You need to go to Oceanic-Air.com/seatingchart.htm and click the rows that coincide with the numbers on the hatch, also known as Hurley's lottery numbers, also known as the numbers that drew the French woman to the island. Can't remember them? Well, here you go: 4-8-15-16-23-42.And enjoy your lost sereis 2 preview

#32. Posted by: jess at July 1, 2005 12:27 AM

im back..again and i still dont know what the lost monster is but it was described over the internet as huge. Mechanical AND biological. Godlike and profane. A massive, multi-tentacled robotic beast resembling a primordial mapinguari — only partially obscured in a cloud of acrid smoke"

#33. Posted by: jess at July 1, 2005 12:33 AM

one thing id like to say. and i just became aware of this, mind you. i think we all (including me) focus on the numbers to much. i mean them showing up everywhere. we know they show up every where. stop
telling us where they show up and tell us what they mean. i have seen no one make a prediction on what they mean but instead just tell us another time we see them.

#34. Posted by: jake at July 8, 2005 4:55 PM

Jess (and others, if interested) if you'd looked closely at the http://www.oceanic-air.com/ site there's three hidden pieces of info, maybe more, but I'm working right now, so no time to browse. This may have been mentioned elsewhere here so sorry for reiterating anything people here know.

One is a picture of a crumpled pink page of revised script mentioning the mapinguari (some sort of Amazonian BigFoot I think?), and two messages, one from Sally and one from Robert, both saying they're trapped on a desert island and other material.

Happy hunting :)

#35. Posted by: mike at July 12, 2005 7:49 PM

the numbers are god

#36. Posted by: Sephiroth at July 21, 2005 7:51 PM

Rumored to exist by locals in the Amazon jungle of Brazil, the Mapinguari is said to be a giant sloth-like creature. The creature is reported to be up to two meters in length.

It is unclear if the Mapinguari truly exists. Ornithologist David C. Oren, head of the Zoology Division of Emilio Goeldi Museum in Belgium, Brazil, spent eight years gathering accounts of the animal. Their findings suggest that the Mapinguari may be a descendent of Megatherium, a species believed to be extinct.

The ABC TV series, Lost, contains a mysterious assailant some have speculated is meant to be a Mapinguari of sorts. A webpage created by the show's producers to hype interest in the second season (oceanic-air.com) contains a hidden script page with the following which describes the monster as: "HUGE. Mechanical and biological. Godlike and profane. A massive, multi-tentacled robotic beast resembling a primordial mapinguari - only partially obscured in a cloud of acrid smoke." This idea may have been nixed by the creators of Lost, however.

#37. Posted by: chris at August 12, 2005 5:34 AM

how many episodes are there in the first season

#38. Posted by: chris at August 12, 2005 5:36 AM

children seem to play a key part in lost. imagine if the others were actually all children.lol

this show is so addictive.

also, how come the past is so important. when locke is like-everyone gets a chance to start over?!
and most for most people, some kind of death seems to have played a key part- or killing, or relationship.

hmmm.

everyone seems to have been put on for a reason.
itd be rubbish if the government put them on their to get rid of them or something stupid.

but SUNS dad seems like he might play a key part, cos that 'tourist' in sins flashback in the toilets was like - not gona let u escape. maybe he meant from the island?!

also WHAT on earth is in the hatch do people think?

#39. Posted by: jenna at August 12, 2005 9:25 AM

Wow, as you say Jenna, this thing is addictive. I'm a bit frustratted that it ended so soon in such a abrupt way but I just can wait next year to see the next season. The first one ended yesterday in here (Switzerland) so I imagine next season wont be shown that early.

I'll be checking for Mac reviews on september and I will post my conclusions here on the meanwhile as people seems as excited as I am.

My first answer goes to chris, there are actually 25 shows, but as the first and last episodes are splitted (in 2 and 3 respectively) it gives a total of 22. Not 23 as I first thougt (that is because numbers obsession jake told about). I will now start to reading about the Mapinguari and will post my clues here.

I just have noticed something that, I think, no one has posted about. Several times on the show, and specially on the last one, we can see holes on the ground, and the one under the hatch is very huge. What about an underground network theory. Seems quite intresting to me. What do you all think of it?

Hope to be back here soon.

#40. Posted by: kaine at August 12, 2005 9:40 PM

I think that the numbers are all the passengers allocated seat numbers, e.g a new character mentioned in the last episode, had the seating number 42F.

Hope that helps?!

Hey, remember the episode where it looked like Walt had some kind of special powers (the one where Walt looked out the window and the bird feel down dead)? Do you think that might be the reason that the people in the boat took him, for his so-called powers?

#44. Posted by: James at August 16, 2005 9:39 PM

in response to james, i have always wondered about walt's conection to the whole thing too. and i have a theory about that...
have you (or anyone else) ever watched the movie "Forbiden Planet"? the basic story line is that on this alien planet, they used their thoughts/mind power to do things, until it finally killed them all, seeing as even aliens are inherently evil too. when humans start to use the technology, an unseen but cruel and powerful monster appears, and kills certain people until the movie hero (Leslie Neilson) finds that it is really just the bad i.d. of the mad scientist(Walter Pidgeon) on the planet. once pidgeon's character is dead, from using the machine too much, the monster disappears and the planet is no longer forbidden.

so my theory is this...there is something similar to that on the island. whether it IS the island, or something within the island, placed there, etc. remains to be seen. but it has the power to take everyone's fears and make them reality.

here are a few examples to support my thoughts, walt...reading hurley's comic book and then attacked by what...the polar bear (fear becomes reality).
claire...afraid of losing the baby to either man or beast, dreams she is attacked and eventually loses the baby.
sawyer...fears the boar until he is convinced it is following him and trying to kill him.

there is general fear from the survivors...so it manifests itself as an unseen but very real monster.

just a thought...

#45. Posted by: rachel at August 18, 2005 12:31 AM

By the finale of season two viewers will know why the plane crashed, producer envisions Lost running "somewhere in the neighborhood of 4-5 seasons."
What the characters won't find inside, Lindelof promises, are aliens, a time travel portal or "a ship they can blast off in." Whatever is in there will involve those mysterious numbers that led to Hurley's lottery win and streak of bad luck in that character's famous backstory.

"Right from the start, in the season premiere, the numbers become a fundamental plot point for the season," Lindelof says. "People aren't going to be disappointed in how we use them."

Just some info i thought some of you would like to know about season 2!

#46. Posted by: angie at August 19, 2005 12:19 AM

* J.J. Abrams said the monsters are NOT dinosaurs.
* From an interview: "When his stuff works at its best, it's usually a story that takes you in through the characters and explains stuff sort of in a science-fact sort of way," Abrams said.
* The cast is huge so anyone could be killed off at any time.
* Everything we see is there for a reason.
* The survivors are not dead or in purgatory.
* The survivors are not in a dream or in someone’s head.
* The island is NOT manifesting people’s thoughts and fears

www.absurdtrivia.com/quiz_000369.php

they are not personality quizzes-they test your knowledge of the show. if anyone cares, i got 15/15 on the first one and 14/15 on the second one (its a bit harder)

try and beat that! ;)

I am a huge fan of this show and while looking around for info I found this blog. You guys have really made me think with some of the things brought up.

Earlier some mentioned going to Oceanic-air.com to find more clues. WOW, did I find some cool stuff. If you push the FIND button where the seating chart is. Slowly different seat turn colors and you can find the exact seat number someone was sitting in. If you push that again, an clip of the new season is shown, or parts of the actual crash are shown too. Plus you press the Preboard check-in the words Ethan Rom come up. Ive only been doing this for a about 10 minutes and Ive got 6 people already. Try it, see if you can find more.

Just wanting to know if anyone thinks the same, on the Oceanic Website on the main page, has anyone noticed that the picture at the top thats kinda like a strip, "taking you to places you have never imagined" the thing in the sea resembles the raft quite a bit. Just a thought

#56. Posted by: Dave Kellett at September 19, 2005 8:55 AM

Just noticed the black smoke also on the same picture.

#57. Posted by: Dave Kellett at September 19, 2005 8:57 AM

I Have read all the posts on here and theories and they all do make lots of sense, but relating it too the bible, isnt that going too far, as (i may be wrong in saying this) the whole reason for the plane crash has something to do with the Oceanic-airlines company as the pictures of the island are plasterd all over the website, now is someone telling me that god or something anlong those lines now runs an airline company, and you could say well the pilot got munched by the monster so how could it be the airline company, but we didnt actually see him get munched, just taken away. This still doesnt explane anything but it gives us an idea that something coporate may be behind it.

#58. Posted by: Dave Kellett at September 19, 2005 10:32 AM

ana lucina - the character Jack meets at the bar seated in 42F - anagram "I a lacuna"

Lacuna -

1. A blank space; a missing part; a gap.

2. (Biology) A small opening, depression, or cavity in an anatomical structure.

Clearly a reference to the hatch don't you think?

That show is such a stinking pile of shite it is a monumental crime ABC has to pay that "hack" "writing team" money to write such drivel. It should be obvious to all the so called fans of this bilge the "writers" ONLY want to keep the audience hooked in the HOPE they learn something in the next, next, next, next episode. I've NEVER seen such convoluted drivel in 4.4 decades. The old CBS TV show LOST in space made more sense! Cheers,PR2

#63. Posted by: P. Isstoff at October 20, 2005 9:19 PM

Okay some 44 year old idiot has nothing better to do than create an argument maybe we shouldnt stoop to his level

If you look there are 2 row F's so if you click on the flashing F on the seating plan next 42 at the bottom where it says "" you can then click on her chair :D also i like the island insider page... btw if you right click on the banner at the top of the page with the pic its a flash document .... that may be subject to change ... also you can zoom in a little and yaes it is smoke and maybe the raft.
another thing ... someone said about the boat in the michael finding sawyers gun scene, i think that was bad editing and it was a crew boat for filming :P

Hi! Thanks for the amazing blog! Very insightful and I love reading all the theories!

With regards to the comic book that Hurly had and then Walt found: Almost every time they show it, it shows what looks like a polar bear on the page. Any reference to the polar bears on the island?

Ok, I've been cheating and reading your review (in England we're waaay behind!) and i realise its a bit late to post here being that you are already into season 2 now but i dont get why claire asks rousseau why she scratched her... does this mean that rousseau was in league with Ethan?... that Ethan was not the original attacker?... That both Rousseau AND Ethan wanted claires baby? and for the same reasons... god too much thinking, my head hurts... better go lie down.

On re-watching this episode, I disagree on one point, mac. I believe Michael gave the watch back to Jin in the episode where Michael cut the handcuff chain with the axe to free Jin, after Sun had explained the significance of the watch to Michael.

In this episode, on the raft, Jin gives the watch back to Michael. At least that's how it looked to me.

COMMENT WARNINGS
  1. If your post contains spoilers -- or even hints at spoilers -- add ***** SPOILERS ***** to the top of your comment.
  2. Your post will NOT immediately show up if you post any URLs. Because of ongoing spam issues, I need to manually approve comments that include links. This sucks, but it's the only solution at this time.
  3. Super-long URLs screw up the page. If you post one of these, people will get very angry at you and really, no one wants that. The solution is easy. Go to www.tinyurl.com and create a mini URL.
  4. Do not post under multiple identities and then have inane conversations with yourself. This kind of nonsense will get you banned from the blog.
  5. Do not post in ALL CAPS FOR YOUR ENTIRE POST. In netiquette, all caps suggests you're screaming. In etiquette, it's lame. All-caps posts will be deleted.
  6. Please scan through previous posts to see if someone has already addressed your theory or comment.
