Lost: Jacob is.............?

So much speculation.....So little time left in the season. With the confusing revelation regarding 'Him' in the last episode, the blog has been chalk-full of theories as to who/what/when is Jacob. Let everyone know your predictions as to who Jacob really is, what powers exist, and how he/it will play into the few remaining episodes we have left. Hurry up, not much time left to make your thoughts known!

After reading Vacc's posting #448 on "Key Points from "The Man Behind the Curtain" I can't help but think Jacob is a Jinn that can manifest himself into many forms (including Smokey). I don't think Jacob is Locke or Desmond or Ben's evil twin. Read Vacc's post or look up Jinn... ooooooohhhhhh

Jacob is actually a woman - an overworked seamstress who feels hemmed in.

#2. Posted by: ButchM at May 14, 2007 4:58 PM

It is Richard Applet. He was in charge before Ben and is still in charge, he has just assumed a number two role so none one knows his true identity. Why do you think he hasn't aged at all and appears to be the head of stuff in america. He was also the one who "got" the man from Tallahasse. It is his smoke monster powers

#3. Posted by: Matt at May 14, 2007 6:56 PM

I think Jacob is someone involved with the Hanso foundation who has become disembodied due to an experiment gone awry. Now a spiritual being, he lives simultaneously in the world of the living in the dead.

Bound by neither time nor space, he knows everything about everyone on the island. He speaks to Ben, which is how the Others know so much about the 815 survivors (sure, the major stuff could have been Googled, but details like Sawyer killing the guy in Sydney take something approaching omniscience).

Jacob would gladly trade his condition for the ability to manifest himself physically as the human he once was, an opportunity the island has afforded to others, but, for reasons unknown, has denied him.

He currently appears to those on the island as the smoke monster, a form he takes my manipulating the grayish powdery substance that surrounds his cabin.

Jacob believes that the secret to reclaiming his living human form may lie in those who can see and hear him. Ben has made it clear that he doesn't want to help, which means his only hope at this point in time is the man with whom he once stood face-to-smokey-face: John Locke.

Err... the end of the first paragraph should read "living AND the dead."

#5. Posted by: James at May 14, 2007 11:33 PM

I think Jacob is that beautiful scarf tied around the neck of Cindy!

#6. Posted by: meg at May 15, 2007 8:06 AM

Jacob is Ben’s 'imaginary' friend!

#7. Posted by: JT at May 15, 2007 8:50 AM

I think Jacob was working with Dharma initiative maybe he was a professor and then he made some experients that made him this way like invisible or maybe burnt or stuck in the time, so he blamed Dharma for his condition, then he got his revenge through Ben and others who believe in him..

#8. Posted by: losti at May 15, 2007 8:51 AM

I think Jacob is Smokey. Before Mr. Eko died, Smokey took the shape of his brother. (Maybe Smokey took the shape of Jack's father and Ben's mother). Maybe that's how Jacob got Ben in, taking the shape form of his mother?

#9. Posted by: daphne at May 15, 2007 9:58 AM

I don't think that Jacob = Smokey. I think Smokey = Cerebus "security system" mentioned on the map in the Hatch. I also think that ash line they crossed is some sort of mythological "spirit fence" or border intended to hem in "Jacob".

When Ben first started talking to him, my initial impression was "This guy is out of his mind"... I still like that impression. I think the power of suggestion and Locke's intense desire to believe could've induced him to hallucinate the vague figure seen in the chair as well as the events inside the cabin (like the lamp breaking / starting a fire that mysteriously went away), and what he heard. So I hope that Jacob is a hallucination of Ben's and now of Locke's.

If not the above, then I think he resembles Locke in that vision. I think the Others/Hostiles have been on the island for a long time (since the Black Rock?) and appear to not be aging thanks to the island's "properties". I think they thought Ben was "The One" or some sort of messiah but now realize that's not the case, and believe Locke to be "The One" [perhaps their Hostile Mythology tells of a messiah which has to kill his father...]

This brings me to one final possibility for Jacob = that he's some sort of holographic projection of Alvar Hanso or some other off-island overlord running the show there...

Ya heard it here first (I hope :) )

#10. Posted by: biohazard at May 15, 2007 1:58 PM

Well, I think that Jacob is from the Black Rock. Somehow he is disembodied or maybe trapped in a parallel universe of some kind and can only communicate with a chosen few people for some reason.

Maybe the island is punshing him for being a slave trader as the Black Rock was a slave ship. Hmmmmm.

Still lots to ponder about it all. Of course, I might change my mind as more information surfaces.

#11. Posted by: wendy at May 15, 2007 2:59 PM

Red...Neck...Man - You weren't implying through your use of "Him" that Jacob may actually be Capt Chaos were you?

Just showing my age.

#12. Posted by: Dr. Bologna at May 15, 2007 4:03 PM

@JT, post #7 - I had an imaginary friend once - then he just disappeared.

@meg - maybe Cindy is the seamstress I mentioned in #2.

#13. Posted by: ButchM at May 15, 2007 5:48 PM

Jacob is a computer, and the image we see is a solid hologram projected by the computer, as is Smokey, Kate's horse, Ben's Mon, Yemi, Hurley's bird, Jack's dad, etc.

#14. Posted by: Cecil Rose at May 16, 2007 3:20 AM

Loving Cecil Rose's computer hologram comment. I think you might have hit the nail on the head!

Also this ties in with the everything can be explained by science stuff.

#15. Posted by: Kris at May 16, 2007 8:57 AM

I think that Jacob will be answered by some combination of science and religion, hence the ongoing themes of faith versus reason where neither side ever seems to be favored. The creators usually present a balanced view between these. He's probably someone from the Black Rock and a leader of the hostiles who was affected by a dharma science experient and trapped in some alternate spiritual plane.
Of course I wouldn't be disappointed if Dom Deluise showed up in a cape.
DUN! DUN! DUN!
Maybe we can get farah Fawcett to recite "Trees". Actually the late Jack Elam would have made a great Jacob!

#16. Posted by: Crispy Seaplanes at May 16, 2007 9:12 AM

Jacob is the equivalent of Agent Smith of the Matrix. A program written by the a rogue programmer of the dharma project who was disenchanted with the life of no fast food and prostitutes. The programmer wasnt finished with Jacob and was gassed by Richard and the multi-colord eyeliner brigade before Jacob was complete. Jacob is tired of the island and only wants to be inserted back into the Matrix.

#17. Posted by: katespanties at May 16, 2007 9:35 AM

does anyone know what the face shape on the back wall of jacob's hut is ? I can't get an answer anywhere. its visible at the start of the scene to ben's left and when the camera pans back to the image of jacob, very creepy !

#18. Posted by: rocketboy at May 16, 2007 11:56 AM

According to the old testament Jacob is Benjamin’s Father. Benjamin was Jacob First Son Born in Israel, or Canaan. Jacob's Wife also died giving birth to Benjamin. See any parallels here. Jacob will probably end being nothing but Ben inability to deal with killing his own father, and the Island helped to manifest Jacob. John and Ben have hating and killing their fathers in common. Ben/Jacob obviously need help deal with the life he has on the island.

#19. Posted by: Jake at May 16, 2007 12:12 PM

katespanties is the 2nd best handle next to RNM...well done.

#20. Posted by: Red...Neck...Man at May 16, 2007 12:52 PM

I like katespanties too. Wait, do I like katespanties, or do I like Kate's panties? Can I like one, and love the other? Is it possible to have a conversation with katespanties while also having Kate's panties on my head?

Maybe this should be the next question on this blog!!

#21. Posted by: ANTP? at May 16, 2007 1:22 PM

Just be careful when having breakfast in bed so you don't accidentally spill your Crispy Seaplanes into katespanties. Those little planes that don't get soggy in milk are awful scratchy!

#22. Posted by: Crispy Seaplanes at May 16, 2007 3:50 PM

ben's dad

#23. Posted by: matt at May 16, 2007 4:39 PM

Well...

I think that Jacob is someone from Ben's past, who has died.

Other characters have seen their past loved ones on this island, such as....

1.Jack seeing his father

2.Eko seeing his brother

3.Ben seeing his mother (as a boy)

etc.

Could Jacob be a real person after all?

#24. Posted by: Joanie at May 16, 2007 5:44 PM

As much as i would like it to be something really sci-fi like the rest of Lost, I'm pretty sure Jacob is some mind game that Ben is making up so Locke will submit to his all-powerful mind. (NEVER)

Also, have any of you noticed that with his glasses on, Ben looks like a turtle?

#25. Posted by: dominoghan at May 16, 2007 7:58 PM

Jacob???? My guess is that he is the Island. I'll leave it at that.

But I like the theory of there being a "Chosen One"; and he must kill his father. like Ben had to do. and then everyone was watching when Locke was being forced to.

The Others have lost faith in Ben. It ties in with the video that Juliet showed Jack. One of the images said that some of them are ready for a change. Which also helps to explain why no one helped when Locke beat the snot out of Mikhail. He's the only one that can defeat the Sith and bring balance to the force.

#26. Posted by: middies at May 16, 2007 8:56 PM

Jacob IS the island!!!! locke has a special connection to the island. And for some soon-to-be reason, Ben cannot see or hear him thus he uses Locke because he knows Locke is "the one"

#27. Posted by: ross at May 16, 2007 9:21 PM

I think one theory is Jacob is actually Locke.

#28. Posted by: Dale at May 17, 2007 8:10 AM

28th?

#29. Posted by: patboone at May 17, 2007 9:53 AM

I don't know if this counts as a SPOILER or Speculation, but this is how I would like to see Season 3 end:

As Ben is culling the women from the 815 herd, a man appears over the hillside. Everyone turns in shock.
Jack yells out, "John, are you here to save us?"
Locke shakes his head, "No. Jacob is."
Ben scoffs and laughs at Locke's remark. But there appears a person coming up behind Locke - - -
A quick a close-up of Ben's bug eyes, turn to terror when we hear "Belated happy birthday, Ben."
(Show ends)

I don't think Ben killed his father in the van. I don't think Ben has the guts to kill directly (he has his minions do all the dirty work). I think the nostril bleeding and pain looks too similar to Patchy's non-lethal sonic fence routine. Also, Ben did not want anyone to get his dad's body. I think he put himself in the position of domination over his father under the guise that the Others wanted him dead. So he put his father in the shack, and used him as an alter-ego to control the Others. He chose the biblical name Jacob, as the father of Benjamin.

#30. Posted by: welh at May 18, 2007 11:42 AM

@#30(welh):
Then Ben stole a body from Bennsylvania, dragged it to the place where he didn't kill his father, stripped his father, put the clothes on the dead person, dragged his father back to Bennsylvania, or the cabin or somewhere else, dressed him in a puffy shirt and called him Jacob.

Sorry, I just don't buy it.

#31. Posted by: James at May 19, 2007 1:38 AM

OK, I don't mean to spam, but the thing is that my explanation of the whole LOST mystery is in the form of a webcomic a published. You can see it right here -
http://tinyurl.com/3bvuwh

It involves a Late-Night TV host, Agatha Christie and....well, you'll see.

Yeah, I liked LOST....during the first 10 or so episodes.

More picture analysis -
This close-up of the apparition in Jacob Playhouse bp3.blogger.com/_RrObyQ3XzcY/R... is the best look at what we think might be one of our legendary island natives. This pic upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia... is of famous actor Chris Heyerdahl. Most know him from early SG Atlantis fame. Is he the now famous ghost in the islands haunted house? Everything lines-up in the pics; hair color, hairline, facial hair (less trim on LOST), forehead + wrinkles, eye shape/size, mouth, nose shape/size, etc….

Now here is the kicker. Actor Heyerdahl is related to legendary Norwegian Pacific Ocean explorer Thor Heyerdahl, and speaks Norwegian too.

#35. Posted by: DocH at May 19, 2007 9:42 PM

We think that jacob is the captain and sole survivor of the Black Rock ship marooned on the island's interior. He is caught between living and death and needs locke to help him escape. Jacob is trapped on the island. Perhaps a rule of the island is that there can only be one survivor from any group that the island snares. (Russo, Ben, Jacob, Locke The New Messiah?)

#36. Posted by: BenJon at May 22, 2007 2:51 AM

I think the others are all able to know the Losties thoughts because of the smokey. It is able to go around and read peoples deep memories of stuff they regretted and stuff they cherished (No other way the others could possibly know about the actions of the Losties). Jacob is, what I believe, the voice of the Smokey which communicates to Ben and gives him key information.

I think that Jacob is maybe Ben's dad and that he never really killed him

#38. Posted by: Caprioli at May 28, 2007 3:10 PM

I think jacob is as old as the island and is something to do with the bible... when adam and eve were banished from eden god put a blazing sword in eden to send wanderers away ( purple light ) lots of people trying to find eden... they found it and now want to protest it but had to contain things... plus as said above the jacob benjami thing

jacob is jacks dad and maybe bens dad as well! in the season premiere, when hurly comes upon jacobs shack and peeks in, you see jacob rocking in the dark. if you slow that scene down on your dvr, you can plainly see that jacob is jacks dad who disappeared from his coffin in the first season. Also the show led us on in the closed captioning during the special that jack and ben had more in common then they realized
