Um, excuse me Mac. But it's spelled ransom with an ess, not a dee.

1. Posted by: ransomjackson at July 13, 2007 1:16 PM

Yeah mac! A general discussion area. Now... what to discuss? We are so used to you or RNM coming up with something. Not to mention the captions are always so fun. Last one turned out to be very, very punny too! I'll be away for the weekend, so I'll check in Sunday night to see where this topic heads. Have a great weekend all you witty wascally wabbits!

2. Posted by: BunnyLover at July 13, 2007 1:33 PM

Random, Ransom, same thing, right?

3. Posted by: Cecil Rose at July 13, 2007 1:34 PM

***SPOILER ALERT***

Just heard that in the Season 4 premier, Jack wins Head of Household.

5. Posted by: Red...Neck...Man at July 13, 2007 2:06 PM

A few days ago I figured out the entire Lost mystery. I searched the whole house for a pencil and paper to write it down because the DSL was out. Then I forgot everything. Go figure.

6. Posted by: meg at July 13, 2007 3:04 PM

Meg - In a book on him I read, Jimi Hendrix once said he figured out the meaning of life, so he wrote it down. When he woke up from what must have been a drug induced stupor, he read what he had written... "blah, blah, blah". So you're in good company.

P.S. Do you guys all work at the same place or something? I only post once in a while, but I feel like I'm crashing a private party! Anyways, great site, ready for season 4!

7. Posted by: R at July 13, 2007 3:31 PM

R.

Nah, we're spread out all over. Though we may get together in January for S-4 parties in Raleigh and Hawaii. We're banded together by the convivial place mac's establised and the excellence of his reviews.

Come on in, the more the merrier.

8. Posted by: Cecil Rose at July 13, 2007 4:03 PM

Hmm, maybe I should check out the Raleigh-area party...my brother & his family live in Apex. Are Crispy & I the only upstate New Yorkers?

9. Posted by: Alaïs_Longthought at July 13, 2007 5:53 PM

Could somebody explain #5 above to me?

10. Posted by: Cecil Rose at July 13, 2007 6:58 PM

Cecil Rose....I'm guessing whatever country you live in doesn't have the TV show Big Brother. The statement in #5 was just a joke, not a real spoiler. In the show BB every week the contestants compete for Head of Household. Google Big Brother 8, and have a 'look-see'.

11. Posted by: debi at July 13, 2007 8:35 PM

Thank you debi. I've deliberately limited myself to only a single reality show, so I'm blissfully ignorant of the details of Big Brother, the Apprentice, The Great Race (or whatever its name is), America's Top Model, The Batchelor, etc. Survivor Rulez!

12. Posted by: Cecil Rose at July 13, 2007 8:58 PM

Don't rub in the Carolina destinations!! I would give my right hand to be in Raleigh (or Charlotte, or Greenville, etc.)right now instead of in the rainy wetlands. In another month I'll have fish in my yard.

Somebody said something about Locke singing at that concert recently. I thought it was a joke until I saw him in acommercial. Is O'Quinn a musician? Or were my eyes playing tricks on me??

13. Posted by: meg at July 13, 2007 9:27 PM

What is the protocol for having your posts removed? I have had atleast two removed....and as Robin Leach would say...."I don't know whyyyyy?"

14. Posted by: Diggler at July 13, 2007 11:22 PM

**POSSIBLE LOST SPOILER ALERT!**

Going out on a limb here and if someone already posted this theory, than I'm sorry if I am not as original as I think I am:
Jack's Dad's (Christian Shepard)body landed on the island during the crash along with everybody and everything else - since he was bringing it back to LA... the body or now the man himself will be brought back to life or somehow will play a part in future storylines... remember Jack saying, "than go ask my father" during the final episode last season? Did the healing power of the island "heal" Christian Shepard... I'm sure Ben could answer that!
Just thinking out loud. Peace!
STENZ

@meg/6 "A few days ago I figured out the entire Lost mystery. I searched the whole house for a pencil and paper to write it down because the DSL was out. Then I forgot everything. Go figure."

LOL! Reminded me of one of my favorite comedians, the late, great Mitch Hedberg:

"I'm a comedian so I have to write these jokes. So, I sit at the hotel at night and I think of something that's funny. Or, If the pen is too far away, I have to convince myself that what I thought of wasn't funny." - Mitch Hedberg

"I bought a seven-dollar pen because I always lose pens and I got sick of not caring." - Mitch Hedberg

16. Posted by: bcre8ve at July 14, 2007 9:41 AM

How many of us wish we were on the Lost island?? Today I was thinking about how exciting it would be to grow up as one of the Others. I mean, if we survived the purge and all. You wouldn't have to worry about money or job training or career training. Yet, you'd have to worry about getting pregnant or getting killed by the smoke monster or Ben.

Yes, this sort of fantisizing led me to join the Peace Corps and I actually lived on an island similar to that for almost two years. Wasn't as exciting though. I'd spend months eating only bananas, rice and mangoes. It was dirty though (which that island seems clean), so I got very sick and skinny). Sleeping on uncomfortable things got me wondering why they never seem cranky. Why they don't get sick more often, what they do during there menses, and when they go potty, etc. Strange things, I know, but I'm drinking, hey, so I'm letting it all out.

17. Posted by: meg at July 14, 2007 8:53 PM

@CecilRose - the reality shows you mentioned are about all we watch. You should check them out as they are very interesting. They give us something to look forward to each week, just like "Lost." We like Survivor and Big Brother the best - both of them have been around for a goop spell now, so they must have a good-sized audience.

@mif - if all of us were on the island, would we have computers? I'd hate to think that I couldn't send a meassage to the Lost blog for you to read, even though we would know each other. I wonder if we'd be mute when we found out island secrets like the Lost crew, or if we'd share them. One thing we know for sure - Charlie would not be first! :>)

18. Posted by: ButchM at July 14, 2007 9:10 PM

@ButchM - Nah, no computers!!nAlthough I am an email addict, some of the best times are when I don't have time to check. We wouldn't be mute, we'd talk, yet maybe it wouldn't all be featured on prime time...:) Sometimes they allude to other conversations.

When I lived on my island (Biliran) I didn't have computer access unless I traveled by boat for almost a day. It was nice, but in retrospect....

19. Posted by: meg at July 14, 2007 9:18 PM

@mac: Hurrah for the Random Topic Area! : ))

@meg: We better start planning our move to the island. We’ll need a typewriter and reams of paper for mac’s recaps. If Locke hasn’t blown up all the computers yet, he soon will. And if I’m to survive with those crazies, a daily recap from mac will be crucial. And when I say crazies, I mean you guys.

We have the Dharma drop for essentials. I’ll pack some books, although Ben and Juliet seem to have a nice supply. I’m assuming we would live in Othersville. (I mean, *hello*, indoor plumbing!) Hmm, what else? Ah yes, weapons and explosives! Walkie-talkies. Bullet-proof vests. A doctor (Jack’s not touching me.) Lots of snacks for our cast parties. Oh, but Locke blew up the satellite, so no TV. Cecil, bring your DVDs. A big-screen Plasma for the Othersville rec hall. A Hummer or two might be useful. But then we’d need fuel and a mechanic. What am I missing?

@Cecil Rose: If you’re ever looking to pick up another reality show, the Amazing Race is the best of the bunch. Educational and entertaining! I gave up on Survivor awhile back, but may tune in this year for the China locale.

@ButchM: Another BB fan here! I’m rooting for Evel Dick or Jameka at this point. Do you keep up with the spoilers online or only the shows?

Well, I have thousands of random thoughts every day, what else can I add?

Speaking of reality shows, why do women voluntarily apply for The Bachelor? And then have a group hallucination of falling in love with some man they met 10 days ago who is “amazing” (not). And have an emotional breakdown if they don’t get a rose. And why does the winner occasionally agree to marry a guy who just groped 5-10 other girls on national TV in the previous segment? Please tell me there’s a super-secret cash prize, cause otherwise: Blech.

Did you hear about the circus elephants wandering the streets of Ontario in the middle of the night and later found nibbling someone’s shrubbery? The police call was on the news: “We just found an elephant walking down the street. Like, a full-grown elephant!” Police Operator: (silence). Their names were Bunny and Suzy. The video was hysterical. The title of the news segment: What happened when these pachyderms packed up their trunks and left the circus?

And finally...here’s a little something that still bothers me:

Why was Sayid digging a hole in the jungle in “The Brig” and what did he hit with the shovel?

Last night I'd had a bit too much to drink when I posted. I never drink and drive, but the most trouble I get in is when I drink and surf (the net). I'm working on it.

Anyway, the first thing I thought of this morning was...oh damn, what sort of mumbo jumbo did I post there last night? When I tried to get on the website to check it was down and I thought...oh no, I crashed it!

Yikes - I'm starting to lose it with Lost. When is it going to be on again? When does season three come out? I know it's been posted a million times...

23. Posted by: meg at July 15, 2007 4:53 PM

@ meg/17

>How many of us wish we were on the Lost island??

I live on an island that looks an awful lot like the one on Lost. The beaches and jungle hikes are great, but the excitement otherwise peaks out at sitting in traffic for hours. :)

24. Posted by: FenwayBen at July 15, 2007 6:52 PM

@20 Clementine
I have always thought that the whole island floats and Sayid hit some of the infastructure. And living under the island are where the little people come from and they are using the losties for entertainment. Maybe lost is their Reality show.
Oops I think reading Meg's post has got me going again. I quit drinking 20 years ago but I think I'm still pun drunk I mean punch drunk.

And finally, you guys are the greatest. I started reading this blog this year and went back and read all the old posts. Mac is the greatest ! lets run him for president..

28. Posted by: bcre8ve at July 16, 2007 9:06 AM

@Meg... Wow you are hard core! So if you had to, who would you compare your island experience character-wise to... Kate, Juliet, Rose, etc??? Silly but curious who you'd pick.

I've thought about the island thing but I'd by lying if I said I wanted to be there. Maybe to vacation, but I'm too comforted by my electronic toys and suburb life in good ole Pennsylvania (not to be confused with BENsylvania!) I'll stick with LOST as a fantasy!

@others... Lost is pretty much my only can't miss show. I like House too, but otherwise I stick with X-Files re-runs!

29. Posted by: R at July 16, 2007 9:28 AM

@STENZ... Certainly anything is possible, but I think alot of folks concluded that Jack was being sarcastic when he said 'you can go ask my father', knowing it couldn't be done.

@MEG... I think Season 3 DVD not out until December.

@MAC... I'm re-watching Lost from the beginning and re-reading your corresponding posts. I noticed no review for Pilot 1 & 2, any reason? Or am I mistaken? You da man Mac Daddy

30. Posted by: R at July 16, 2007 9:43 AM

@R/29 "I'll stick with LOST as a fantasy!"

I'm with you. I'm quite the hiker, camper, kayaker, and canoer. One of my worst experiences was living on the beach of an untouched island for a time. The bugs were horrible, the crabs came up to attack every night, sleep was impossible, and the daytime heat was horrible.

Having said that, it is one of my fondest memories and I'm planning on doing it again - but with more gear this time so that I'm better prepared.

31. Posted by: bcre8ve at July 16, 2007 9:46 AM

Good thoughts ya'll. Can you imagine if we got a whole bunch of people from this blog, approached a tv studio and said..."We have approx 15-20 people who met through a LOST blog that are willing to drop everything and let some reality show producers drop them on an island and see if they survive." That's brilliant. Wait, that's Survivor. CRAP! Well if they can have an actual Smoke Monster it'd be different.

LOST party in SoFla is next on the agenda.

32. Posted by: Red...Neck...Man at July 16, 2007 10:20 AM

Maybe we could be dropped on an island, live in the same hut, race around the place finding clues, all the while trying to guess which suitcase the big money is in. We could call it:

"The Big Amazing Lost Brotha Survivor Race Deal"

Or TBALBSRD for short.

Or maybe we could just move to the island, give Dr Christian Shepard a Cain, solve mysterious island maladies. We could call the show, "Hut."

33. Posted by: bcre8ve at July 16, 2007 10:54 AM

34. Posted by: Clementine at July 16, 2007 11:13 AM

@Clementine/34 "Jacob is Willy Wonka!!??"

Interesting theory. I would like to propose one myself. Taking into consideration the following:

1) The time of year that this is all taking place - Christmas

2) The period clothing that Jacob is wearing

3) Jacob's age

4) Jacob's appearance (white hair and beard)

5) The name (Jacob)

C'mon, it's all too obvious, Jacob is Jacob Marley!

(I guess that makes Ben Scrooge!)

35. Posted by: bcre8ve at July 16, 2007 12:07 PM

@bcre8ve/35: Bear with me while I extrapolate on your Christmas Carol...

Jacob = Jacob
Locke = Scrooge
Fred (Scrooge’s nephew) = Boone
Bob Cratchit = Bernard
Alpert = Ghost of Island Past
Ben = Ghost of Island Present
Smokey = Ghost of Island Yet to Come
Tiny Tim = Walt

Of course, that would mean Bernard was Walt’s father…

Wait a minute!?! Bernard and Rose become fertile due to the magic properties of the island. They bear a “special” child in S5. Desmond learns the secrets of the Magic Box (black hole) and takes the baby back to 1994 to be raised as Michael and Susan’s son to come back to the island and save them all!!

But who’s Fezziwig??

(Don’t look for a deeper meaning here...I just wanted to use the words “Fezziwig” and “Oompa Loompa” today. Cause they make me smile.)

36. Posted by: Clementine at July 16, 2007 1:10 PM

Did anyone see the JJ Abrams trailer that plays before Transformers? It's pretty sick. There's no name for it, no plot, no nothing. Very odd. I just watched it and was freaked out. Basically because it looks like Smokey is destroying New York!!!!! I'd love to see some thoughts on this. Also, there is a website with basically nothing on it www*1-18-08*com

37. Posted by: Red...Neck...Man at July 16, 2007 1:11 PM

RNM: Movie code name - Cloverfield. Super-secret, super-cool. I'm hoping for some kinda Smokey/Godzilla hybrid monster. Especially loved the (last object that came crashing to the street). Don't want to say what it was, in case everyone hasn't seen the trailer yet. It was up on You-Tube last week, not sure if it's still there.

I wasn't sure what to make of that trailer. Considering I was at the theater to see Transformers, there have just been a lot of movies already about monsters or aliens attacking cities. The trailer looked pretty similar to the movie I was going to see. Then when this movie that already looked like a hundred other movies to me didn't have a title or anything. I was just like "What the heck is this?" About the only thing about the trailer that caught my interest was when it mentioned Abrams. Oh well, I'm sure we'll hear more about it in time and it probably will be cool but based on that trailer I wasn't very excited.

44. Posted by: Clementine at July 16, 2007 2:10 PM

Hear are my random thoughts for the day.

Don't ask me why this has been bugging me but it has.
1 There are two very similar scenes in Lost. When Kate helps Juliet snap her shoulder back into place(season 3) and the other is when Charlie helps Jack snap his shoulder back into place(season 1).

2 The other though it that what if the smokie monster reads peoples souls. When he actually kills people(the pilot and Eko) He is ripping there souls from his body. Ben is not affected by this because he does not have a soul or he sold his to Jacob.

Think im going to go back and rematch season 1 and 2 and see if I can come up with a good topic to discuss.

Hope everyone is enjoying there summers!

@bcre8ve

And that's why I'm and Accountant, never could write properly. Thanks for not giving me the full red pen, I know there are far more mistakes in that post.

Did not even get that the Head of Household joke was referring to Big Brother. I though it was a stab at the fact Jake should be able to claim them all on his tax return.

51. Posted by: Dakota at July 16, 2007 2:57 PM

@Dakota: "I though it was a stab at the fact Jake should be able to claim them all on his tax return." HA! Cracked me up!

And feel free to let loose with the keyboard, cause I don't think Gramma Pole Lice can patrol this area. Randomness Rules!

BTW: Loved the "...Jake should be able to claim them all on his tax return." LOL!

(And, yes, I know that was a different hatch, and it was the notebooks, not the computer printout. Once again, I just like the word "pneumatic.")

Today is the 62nd Anniversary of the Dawn of the Atomic Age. First nuclear weapon exploded, near (well, by New Mexico reckoning) Alamogordo, NM, just after dawn, July 16, 1945. Site is now in the middle of the White Sands Missile Range, open to the public once per year.

59. Posted by: Cecil Rose at July 16, 2007 5:34 PM

@980711/54

Ok, I knew I recognized a pattern here...

If you take the numbers from 980711's post (#54) and divide them by the Lost numbers (4 8 15 16 23 42)...

4887535202660557 / 4815162342 = 1,015,030.20
6112453393809120 / 4815162342 = 1,269,417.93
2156515432672640 / 4815162342 = 447,859.34
9975280914684382 / 4815162342 = 2,071,639.58
1713776976498679 / 4815162342 = 355,912.61
3110706394223885 / 4815162342 = 646,023.16
4788291615587897 / 4815162342 = 994,419.56
0127712504180603 / 4815162342 = 26,522.99
0365951939835055 / 4815162342 = 75,999.92
4496724623378962 / 4815162342 = 933,867.71
4259903424649281 / 4815162342 = 884,685.32
0884417473033506 / 4815162342 = 183,673.45

...and then add the answers together...

1,015,030.20
1,269,417.93
447,859.34
2,071,639.58
355,912.61
646,023.16
994,419.56
26,522.99
75,999.92
933,867.71
183,673.45
------------
8,905,051.76

...then take the square root of the sum of the answers...

sqrt of 8,905,051.76 = 2,984

and then add those numbers together...

2+9+8+4

Spookey huh?

60. Posted by: bcre8ve at July 16, 2007 5:34 PM

@980711/54

OK, I knew I recognized a pattern here...

If you take the numbers from 980711's post (#54) and divide them by the Lost numbers (4 8 15 16 23 42)...

4887535202660557 / 4815162342 = 1,015,030.20
6112453393809120 / 4815162342 = 1,269,417.93
2156515432672640 / 4815162342 = 447,859.34
9975280914684382 / 4815162342 = 2,071,639.58
1713776976498679 / 4815162342 = 355,912.61
3110706394223885 / 4815162342 = 646,023.16
4788291615587897 / 4815162342 = 994,419.56
0127712504180603 / 4815162342 = 26,522.99
0365951939835055 / 4815162342 = 75,999.92
4496724623378962 / 4815162342 = 933,867.71
4259903424649281 / 4815162342 = 884,685.32
0884417473033506 / 4815162342 = 183,673.45

...and then add the answers together...

1,015,030.20
1,269,417.93
447,859.34
2,071,639.58
355,912.61
646,023.16
994,419.56
26,522.99
75,999.92
933,867.71
183,673.45
------------
8,905,051.76

...then take the square root of the sum of the answers...

sqrt of 8,905,051.76 = 2,984

and then add those numbers together...

2+9+8+4

...you get 23. One of the Lost numbers!

Spooky huh?

Being from upstate New york its like a requirement to be a Bills' fan. Not being one to blindly conform, I picked another team to root for who was at the time in the Bills' division from whence I proceeded to suffer through about twenty years of futility and not living up to full potential. Yes I'm talking about my beloved Colts who finally put the Pats out to Patsture this year! GO COLTS!!!

@Clementine
I'm doing fine today. For some reason the number 23 has always been meaningful to me so when I heard there was a movie coming out I had to go see it. Then when the movie blew chunks...it was very disappointing. I've actually been quite atable today. Now as long as I don't run across 23 Oompa Loompas I should be ok!

@Crispy Seaplanes/#70: "Patsture"? Good one! And being from upstate NY, I'm sure you've heard the term "Barfalo Bills." ; > I liked the Colts when they were still the Baltimore Colts.

My (now deceased) grandmother was the biggest football fan I've ever met. She knew more about the game than most guys. Saturdays were for college (Penn State & U. of Iowa) & Sundays for the pros (Giants). As she got older & harder of hearing, more & more of the neighborhood got to listen to her choice of games. ; )

74. Posted by: Alaïs_Longthought at July 18, 2007 1:11 AM

Did you guys hear that JJ Abrams' new movie is set to be release starting on 01/18/08? That of course is the first 24 minutes. The rest of the movie is to be release over the course of the next three years in 16 minute increments finally wrapping up in 2010.

75. Posted by: bcre8ve at July 18, 2007 11:53 AM

Is that true about the Abrams movie? I don't get it--why would anyone buy tickets to see a 16 minute film? Is it really a theatrical release? What is the point of this project?

Lostie in Other Venues sighting:

***Terry O'Quinn ***

In ABC promo for new series debuting Sat Aug 4th "Masters of Science Fiction" Apparently an anthology series based on works by different "Masters" of SF - authors not mentioned. Promo aired during "Lost" replacement "Traveller" (which, by the way, I'm still enjoying.) Promo likens it to "Twilight Zone".

Also starring:

Anne Heche
James Denton

BTW anthology series generally don't have "Stars".

Questions raised:

1. What if anything, does this mean for "Lost" when one of the major stars is starring in another show?

2. Who the heck premiers new shows in early August?

3. Why is it on Saturday night, a traditional parking spot for dead shows?

4. Is this just a way to dump a few shows of a series that somehow got made but the network lost all faith in? A late "summer replacement"?

5. How to square the above with fairly major stars like Terry O'Quinn and Anne Heche i.e. lower 'A' level and definitely above 'B'?

81. Posted by: Cecil Rose at July 19, 2007 11:07 AM

A little perusing of ABC.Com provides a few answers to the above. Apparently "Masters of SF" is a limited 'series'. Four shows. And Heche and O'Quinn each 'star' in only one of them, along with such other luminaries as Malcom McDowell and Sam Waterston.

@Alaïs_Longthought, FenwayBen, and ButchM, and Crispy Seaplanes

There is no other team that can even come close to my beloved Redskins. They break my heart every year, but you got have faith. We have the money power of the Yankees, and the sucking power of the Nationals.

On the subject of Lost here are some Random thoughts.

Could the smokie monsters kryptonite be Wood? I say this because it seems to leave them alone when they dive into the trees. Jacobs house was also made of Wood.

When Locke and Ben visit Jacob, Ben tells Locke to turn off his flashlight because Jacob does not like electronics. Then things got strange in the house John turns his light back on making things crazier. The first attack with the smokie monster on the beach Sawyer points a flash light at it and the thing goes nuts. Could this mean that Jacob is smokie or that they have the same pet peeves?

@83 Dakota SAID:

>Could the smokie monsters kryptonite be Wood? I say this because it seems to leave them alone when they dive into the trees. Jacobs house was also made of Wood.

Doesn't seem to do so well with sonic vibrations, either.

On the one hand, Smoky seemed unable to penetrate the Baobab tree (or whatever it was) where Kate and Juliet were cowering.

On the other hand, it pushes aside whole trees and uproots others in other scenes.

84. Posted by: Cecil Rose at July 19, 2007 2:17 PM

I wonder if the tree that Rousseau blew up with the dynamite wasn't an EMT (exploding mango tree) after all. Maybe it was a Borat tree like Cecil says. Right after the explosion I heard someone say, "Niiiiiiiiiiiice".

@Dakota - In this day and age, you can at least be thankful that the Redskins are still the Redskins. Because of pressure from native American groups, Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, was forced to change their name from Redskins several years back - they are now the Red Hawks.

Sort of like St. Johns changing from Red Men to Red Storm.

Hey dude, I'm for your Redskins any day of the week when they play Dallas - hope that made your day.

87. Posted by: ButchM at July 19, 2007 7:03 PM

Yes, but let us not forget the lesson we learned with the name change from the Bullets to the Wizards. I hope I never see the day the Redskins loose there name. Our fans are too good to ever let that happen.

@Cecil Rose
There were similar tree/bamboo hiddings (Kate and Juliet) in season one with a lot of different characters. Wooding being Smokies Kryptonit was more of a bad joke then litteral.

Lostpedia informs me those were Banyan trees. Weren't the hidings in season 1 mostly from polar bears, rather than Smokey?

Well, perhaps we'll need to start bcre8ve off with a pamphlet..or post-it note.

Cecil Rose, *seriously*??!! I, myself, am very single-minded. One book at a time, front to back. (As will occur with Harry Potter this weekend to avoid spoilage).

The only book on your list that I've read is "The Third Policeman." But I'm up for anything; where ever your interest lies.

98. Posted by: Clementine at July 20, 2007 3:42 PM

>Cecil Rose, *seriously*??!!

Yeah, its this odd multitasking habit I picked up. I keep a book wherever I might spend some time and have a few slack minutes too pick it up and read.

One in the bathroom
One by the bed
One by the chair where I watch TV
One in the back bathroom
One in the upstairs bathroom
One at the computer desk
One at my desk at work
One in the car
One in Carol's car
One (or several) at my desk at home

I *hate* being stuck anywhere with nothing to read. Plus I've found a book to be a protective ward against standing in line. If I have one with me, lines move swiftly, and I can only read a page or two before reaching the checkout clerk. If I don't have a book with me, the lines bog down, The cash register runs out of printer paper. The man in front of me wants to deposit thousands of unrolled, uncounted pennies. The scanner labels fall off all the items of the people ahead of me and each has to be referred to the back, for a price check. One at a time. The woman in front of me wants to cash a counter check. Drawn on a bank in Afghanistan. And has no ID. The power fails and the teen age clerk has to call a manager to find out much change to give on a dollar for a 53 cent purchase.

99. Posted by: Cecil Rose at July 20, 2007 4:09 PM

@Cecil Rose
I must rewatch season 1 and write them down. Can remember Boune and Shannon hiding in the Banyan, but that might have been when Boune was tripping on what Locke gave him.

@ Cecil Rose
Books I'm reading right now, not quiet as many as you. I feel the same way you do with books I have them everywhere. They are traveling entertainment.

4000 Days My Life and Survival in a Bangkok Prison-Warren Fellows

Possible Side Effects-Augusten Burroughs

Manhunt:The 12 Days Chase for Lincoln's Killer-James L. Swanson

Random Family-Adrian Nicole LeBlanc

A Dirty Job- Christopher Moore

@bcre8ve
You gotta have faith. When I met my husband he was not a reader, and claimed he could never finish a book. I told him he had just never come across a good book yet. It took a few years of him watching how much I enjoyed to read, but he came around and tried it out. We started him on some easy sports books about his favorite teams. I then convinced him that the Power of One by Bryce Courtney was a book about boxing and now he can read just about anything. Besides being a little mad I stretched the truth to get him to read a real book.

@CecilRose/various posts: I just have to share...my dad was an aerospace engineer & worked on the simulator for the lunar landing module. The day of the first moon landing he was (naturally) glued to the TV, as was my mom. I was six & rather put out...because it was my birthday & no one was paying any attention to me! Little egotiste...

You got to meet Larry Niven & Jerry Pourelle? And Octavia Butler? Wow! Lucifer's Hammer has been a re-read every couple of years for decades, & Kindred was one of the best sci-fi books I've ever read. Butler's death was a real shame.

I thought I was the only person in America to not watch Seinfeld...glad I had company! I think I'll go make myself some Ovaltine—oops, Roundtine—to mellow out after attending a Harry Potter party... : )

103. Posted by: Alaïs_Longthought at July 21, 2007 12:28 AM

@Alaïs_Longthought

Larry and Jerry are both members and fairly regular attenders of the LASFS, and it's quite easy to meet them if you're in LA on a Thursday night. The LASFS has met every Thursday since the late Thirties. Heinlein was a member (no I came along much too late to have meet him.) Bradbury is a member but hardly ever attends these days. Steve Barnes attended fairly regularly when he still lived in LA.

The others (and many more SF people) have presented programs when passing through. The clubhouse is a little house with a bigger structure (the meeting room) in back on a street in the San Fernando Valley. Visitors more than welcome. (And three free visits to meetings before they ask you to join). Lifetime dues are something like $10, and there's two dollar meeting-fee to members to support the club. www*lasfs*org

A site I'd recommend to anyone interested in SF, technology, writing, or modern history is herry Pournelle's website. Start at:

http://www*jerrypournelle*com/view/currentview.html

It's sort of a dayboook, Jerry writes there every day, and his many correspondents present intesting mail every day as well.

Or maybe Richard Dreyfuss in “Close Encounters of the Third Kind.” We may need to communicate with musical notes to overcome the language barrier.

But seriously, I have a friend who refuses to watch even one episode. To me, that’s like a vast untapped source of enjoyment...comparable to having never tried ice cream or a roller coaster. To him, it’s like a vast waste of time. : )

I wasn't really anti-Seinfeld or anything, just had something better to do on Thursday nights. I do believe I saw one original episode - I must have been home sick or it was shifted to a different night or something - it was the one where Jerry Stiller (whose dad did he play?) explained the meaning fo Festivus.

And of course no one could escape all the pop-cultural references that flowed from the show - "No soup for you!".

I've long suspected that such a literate bunch must at times crack a binding or two. I've often told people that my personal library is bigger than my kids' school library. I get all jittery if I have less than three or four books lined up to be read. I'm very big into SF thanks to Asimov, Heinlein, Bear, Niven/Pournelle, Dick (easy there youse), Bradbury etc. And it's great to hear there's another Christopher Moore fan out there. I'm also huge into Terry Pratchett and Douglas Adams. I guess I cut my teeth on Encyclopedia Brown and Sherlock Holmes, and then it was Tolkien. And yes, I am reading Harry Potter. My mom gave it to my son for his birthday and I co-opted it. For some strange reason, I've never been big into what you would call "the classics". Oh yeah, and then there's Calvin and Hobbes and Far Side...

113. Posted by: ransomjackson at July 23, 2007 11:25 AM

He and Terry O'Quinn are the only cast members that post regularly over in the cast blogs provided by "The Fuselage". However, "JorGar" in not the on-line name he uses there. I wrote and asked him - I'll let you know if he responds.

I would like to take a minute to honor these words that will never have a place in Haiku - the so called "Haiku Homeless." Here is a sampling:

A moment of silence please...

Unconstitutionality
autosuggestibility
incommensurability
unidirectionality
electroencephalogram
Microspectrophotometer
Magnetohydrodynamics
Antidisestablishmentarianism
supercalifragelistic
nonanticipativity

We should also honor those words that have forever been banished from the second line:

autobiographical

misinterpretational
unsanctimoniously
counterproductivity
unsatisfactorily
hypoallergenically
responsibility
predictability
discombobulated

Straight from the Dude's mouth -

JorGar is *not* Jorge Garcia.

Jorge answered my question over on The Fuselage, and said it wasn't him. We do know, however, that Jorge has at least scanned the blog (I left a link) because he said he would never say "dudettes", something I had not mentioned in my question.

Oh, and I said he and Terry O'Quinn were the most communicative of the "Lost" actors. I believe I've slighted William "Ethan Rom" Mapother, who still seems to be answering fan questions nearly every day, and this from a character killed off in season 1, though seen in flashback in seasons 2 and 3. He seems to be a genuinely nice guy. But don't say "Ethan" and "villain" in the same sentence.

O'Quinn seems to be away for the summer, perhaps making that other 'series' appearance I mentioned above a ways.

I'm in for MLBFF, too! I'd like to select as my first pick The Others Sonic Defense/Special Teams. Their method of defense is so stellar, only a 12-foot-high tree branch has been able to penetrate it so far....*cough* which is more than I can say for the Colts. *cough*

198. Posted by: Trinity at July 31, 2007 2:12 PM

Trinity--
I do believe the above mentioned Mikhail did indeed penetrate the Sonic Death Fence-wnet through it like buttah he did, like Peyton Manning scoring at will over the Patsies.
I'll take Rousseau's impenetrable series of booby traps as my defense. Smokey can be my sack specialist. He can reach over any offensive line (just can't get over that death ray fence) to grab the opposing quarterback. On offense I'll take Ana Lucia and Paulikki since they're all just plain offensive!

199. Posted by: Crispy Seaplanes at August 1, 2007 10:04 AM

Jacob the Djinn is my entire defensive line. I think he can handle it. But I may also add Sayid, because his hair reminds me of Troy Polamaulu. On offense will be the bad-**s ladies of Lost football: Juliet, Kate and Rousseau (quick, tough, and mean) and Ethan and Mikhail (they’ll kill ya just as soon as look at ya). Hurley is center. Desmond is my running back as he can time-travel to the end zone. Jin’s in as starting quarterback, with Sawyer as backup. Walt’s my kicker, and Alex and Karl are on special teams. Ben is offensive coordinator, Alpert is defensive coordinator, and Mrs. Hawkins and the monk are sharing head coaching duties (since they know all). Of course, Vincent is the mascot.

I can’t wait to see everybody’s team names!

202. Posted by: ransomjackson at August 1, 2007 1:12 PM

Sayid would make a great linebacker, as he can tackle a dude and snap his neck with his feet. I'd like Jack as my QB because he's demonstrated his exceptional skill as a team leader, and he had a nice arc on his pass to Tom (R.I.P., big guy). I'd also like Sawyer as my TE because...well, look how tight it is! HA! (C'mon, you know someone had to use that one sooner or later.) I wish I'd thought of Dez as my RB first. Can I still draft him as my punt returner? With his time travel abilities, he could take every kickoff straight to the Ozone! (Er, I mean endzone. Too much global warming talk in the news!) Jin's small frame and totally ripped abs make him an idea WR. Plus, he's a former hitman, so I think he knows a little about staying on target. I would take Locke as my kicker, but those legs of his have proven somewhat unreliable. You just never know when they'll be working right.
Crispy- Mikhail did not actually penetrate the fence. He walked right up to it but then his brain turned to mush and blood shot out his ears. He was on the Others' IR for a good 3-4 weeks or so. And the Pats are really building their defense back up this year, especially their once-depleted secondary. Seriously, with Adalius Thomas on LB, who's gonna watch Peyton's blind side? ;)

@BunnyLover - have you seen the new Dharma orientation film featuring bunny 15? I couldn't help but think of you when I saw it.

214. Posted by: bcre8ve at August 3, 2007 10:38 AM

I was also happy to see that bunnies remain a vital part of the Lost mystique. They're much more cuddly than the wild boars.

On another topic, I'm having a really hard time deciding my fantasy football team name. I have several options, but none are outstanding.

@bcre8ve: Did you get my email?

215. Posted by: Clementine at August 3, 2007 11:33 AM

@214 - bcre8ve,
No, I haven't seen the new orientation film. Do you have a link to it? Thanks for thinking of me. You're too kind...

216. Posted by: BunnyLover at August 3, 2007 11:38 AM

Go to Google video and search on "Lost Orchid Film" and you'll get several versions, not all the same. Look for the one taken straight off a screen at the San Diego ComicCon for the "unedited raw version".

217. Posted by: Cecil Rose at August 3, 2007 12:23 PM

Thanks Cecil. I watched it.

*****SPOILER ALERT*****

Did you see the subliminal message? I believe it said "God loves you as Jacob does." Very interesting about the two Bunny #15's. "When did you set the shift?"

Man, this show just keeps on getting better. Can't wait for S4!!!

*** SPOILER ***

According to Buddy TV, there are two new characters being introduced to Lost this next season:

"The first of the two new characters is named Russell. From his description, it would be fair to bet that he is involved in Dharma or a similar organization. In his article at TV Guide, Michael Ausiello described Russell as being “a brilliant mathematician in his late thirties who is "capable of great insights and has a tremendous knowledge across various scientific fields."

Obviously this is Russell Johnson, the professor from Gilligan's Island : )

222. Posted by: bcre8ve at August 4, 2007 9:54 AM

@ Clementine/#215: I actually came up with a list of Lost-related team names. Since I can only use one, I'll be happy to throw some of them your way and see if any tickle your fancy. Come to think of it, if anyone needs an idea for a team name, I got a bountiful supply. I can be, like, the official team name generator. :)

223. Posted by: Trinity at August 4, 2007 10:34 PM

*********ANOTHER SPOILER*********

Peter Stormare (Abruzzi/Prison Break, Grimsrud/Fargo) has been offered a role next season. Although I don’t see him playing Russell the mathematician ;)
(I’d like to see a smack-down between him and Patchy Mikhail.)

@Trinity/223: Thanks, I'm OK with the FF name I have for now. I'm holding a few in reserve in case I change my mind (which has been known to happen)

@bcre8ve/222:
>Obviously this is Russell Johnson, the professor from Gilligan's Island : )

We’ll know for sure when he starts making coconut radios and bamboo stethoscopes. I could see Rose and Bernard as Lovey and Mr. Howell : )

Been away for a few days. Count me in on the football league.

My team name is "Help Jack Off"

@Clem - Hurley is center on your team?

On mine, he is the DEFENSE.

RNM is my tight end

Alais_Longthought is my sole cheerleader and financial advisor.

mif has already been signed to a muli-year deal, my FIRST player!

(I have many, many more...)

In college, I was in marching band (the Columbia University Marching Band, or C.U.M.B.). We used to regular taunt the refs during the game (as we were invariably down 2 touchdowns in the first 10 minutes, and had little to cheer about). We used to sing (to the tune of Oh My Darling Clementine)

Who's your father, who's your father, who's your father, referee? You ain't got one, you ain't got one, you're a ******* referee!

Who's your mother, who's your mother, who's your mother, referee? You ain't got one, you ain't got one, you sprung full grown from the brow of Zeus!

@Butch M/#226: Thanks much, I'm honored! Guess I'd better practice those stag jumps & splits. If you hear a ripping sound it's just my thigh muscles tearing...

@FenwayBen/#227: I'll bet those refs missed a few calls while trying to figure out what your taunt meant... ; >

228. Posted by: Alaïs_Longthought at August 6, 2007 12:42 AM

@ 227 / FenwayBen,
Thanks for the new "cheer." Only problem is I have that tune in my head now and it won't go away. Darn you...

I've set up my team. They are THE KILLER RABBITS!!! (Bet you'd never guess...)

Gonna be hard coming up with cheers that rhyme with rabbit. Oh well, check out my avitar on the site. I'm a cheerleader, with a SCARF, heart-shaped sunglasses, bunny ears (of course), and a fuzzy bunny mascot at my side.

GO KILLER RABBITS!
Show your big ole teeth
Make this a habit

Perhaps you could do a Bugs Bunny inspired cheer:

Kill-er Wabbits
Kill-er Wabbits
Kill-er WABBITS
FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT!

Trinity and bcre8ve look pretty sharp, too. FenwayBen, no avatar for you?

231. Posted by: Clementine at August 6, 2007 1:41 PM

Ah yes! Elmer Fudd-ish cheers. Love it. Thanks for the suggestion Clementine. Loved your avatar too! Looking forward to playing. First time FF league for me.

As an old high school and college football and soccer referee, let me say taunts are wasted on the referees. We're so busy out there we really don't hear anything further away than the team bench (and occasionally have to turn a deaf ear to that, too.)

I'm sorry, folks, I meant to post a reminder about the ABC limited series "Masters of Science Fiction" that debuted last Saturday night at 10PM. The first episode "A Clean Escape" was based on a short story of the same name by John Kessel. John teaches in the English department at NC State here in Raleigh, and as serendipity would have it, Raleigh's own Science Fiction Convention, Trinoc coN, was held this weekend, so at 10PM, there was John Kessel, hosting a viewing of the show to numerous fans.

He modestly disclaimed "Master" status with the likes of Robert Heinlein and Harlan Ellison, two other authors with stories in the series. (Ellison co-wrote the script for his episode, as well.) His fans called him for false modesty.

This Saturday's episode (Aug 11), "The Awakening", stars Lost's own Terry "John Locke" O'Quinn, in an episode based on a short story by Howard Fast (writer of the film "Spartacus"). Turn on, tune in, enjoy.

241. Posted by: BunnyLover at August 6, 2007 10:11 PM

Yeah, I had been too lazy to set up an avatar, taken care of now.

And we, at CUMB, really didn't care if the refs heard us. There were very few fans in the stands (our stadium is 100 blocks from the school, the games are played on the sabbath, and the team had recently set the NCAA record for consecutive losses), so we were mostly amusing ourselves.

Our musical repertoire consisted largely of the theme from the Jeffersons, the theme from the Simpsons, Under the Sea, I Hear You Knockin', and Satisfaction, in addition to our school fight songs and the national anthem. I started out playing the maracas, but was promoted to cymbols my sophomore year. Which meant I really only had to pay attention during the national anthem. I also got to write the half time shows, all of which were in bad taste. Ah, college...football games and jell-o shots...

ButchM :)

Here we go, Island Steelers!
Here we go!

243. Posted by: Clementine at August 7, 2007 10:33 AM

@Cecil Rose/237: I had every intention of recording MofSF on Sat and completely forgot. Thanks for the info. I wonder if the series will be released on DVD.

@FenwayBen: Nice job on the avatar!

Now we just have to work on Crispy and RNM. The generic Jack-o-lantern faces aren't working for me, fellas! But, of course, this is coming from the person who has already changed her avatar's outfit about 5 times. (What can I say? I'm easily amused.) I have a great one saved for game day! ;)

244. Posted by: Clementine at August 7, 2007 10:42 AM

Hey Clementine - was wondering if you knew how to view a person's whole avatar, not just the head part. I can see my whole body when I pull it up to modify, but after I save it and go back to FF page, it's just the head. (I want you guys to see the team mascot...) Also, how'd you get the Steelers logo for your helmet avatar?

245. Posted by: BunnyLover at August 7, 2007 10:55 AM

BunnyLover: I think you can only see the "head-shot" in your FF profile cause it's meant to look like a player card. I don't know any way to change that. For my Steeler logo, I first saved it on my computer in My Pictures, and then on the FF Profile went into Change Image and Save Picture and uploaded the logo, then highlighted it (instead of my avatar face).

I hope those titles are correct. I'm going by memory, because we can't access any sports related websites here at work.

Enjoy!

246. Posted by: Clementine at August 7, 2007 11:56 AM

I actually tried to do an avatar today but my work computer does not have Flash. They must not want us screwing around on the computer and being unproductive at work--go figure! Guess I'll have to try to find some computer time at home for a change!

Entirely possible. My understanding is that they originally planned 13 eps, actually shot 6, and will only be showing 4. The two filmed but not on the broadcast schedule: "Little Brother", script and original story by Walter Mosely, and "Watchbird", based on a Robert Sheckley short.

My team name will be in honor of everyone's favorite educational film persona and Dharma spokesperson, Dr. Marvin Candle aka Dr. Mark Wickmund aka Dr. Edgar Halowax, and will be known as the One Armed Bandits.

Remember some time back how I mentioned that 'the Amazing Steve' over at Dave Barry's '24' blog was, for the second season, writing continuing episodes to extend the season (rather tongue in cheek, of course). Well in this season's extrapolations he's had the 24 regulars Jack, Chloe, Bill and Morris chasing Chinese terrorists though a bizarre series of alternate universes.

The alternate series are all the worlds of various TV shows - each week something happens at the end of the hour to send them off to a new universe that we get just a tantalizing glimpse of and try to guess where the adventurers are going next week. A few weeks ago they were tranported to an island, and I hoped it was 'Lost' but instead it was 'Gilligan's Island'. They've also been to the world's of 'The Beverly Hillbillies', 'G
