Point 3
Jack

Sawyer

Kate

Sayid

Michael

Hurley

Jin

Sun

Way back at the beginning of this review -- around 2,000 words ago -- I mentioned that one of the major carry-over plotlines from last episode was Sayid's development of a counterattack plan. Yeah, remember that?

The appearance of Desmond -- and his boat -- allows Sayid to set his plan in motion. Sayid tells Jack he will use the boat to zip around the other side of the island to secretly scout out the Others. When he's gathered the necessary intelligence, he'll signal Jack and his party, and they'll join up for an organized sneak attack. To add to the theatrics, Sayid plans on signaling Jack with a thick plume of black smoke. "This time," Sayid says, "they will know that we are coming."

Yes, Sayid. Very nice. Thank you.

So that's the plan, and the first half of the episode is dedicated to the organization and early execution of this plan. The second half -- well, that's when things really kick into gear. Oh my, do they kick into gear.

Basically, we've got two teams:

Team 1 is comprised of Jack, Kate, Sawyer, Hurley and Michael.

Team 2 is made up of Sayid, Jin and Sun.

Team 2 might seem kind of odd -- after all, Sun has never displayed a predilection for action, but she and Jin are both adept at sailing and, more importantly, she won't take "no" for an answer (go Sun!).

With our rosters set and the battle ready to be waged, we'll begin with the Trials and Tribulations of Team 1 ...

Team 1 heads out on foot, following Michael's directions toward the Others beach camp. At this point, Jack is the only member of Team 1 who knows Michael is under Other control.

As Team 1 plunges through the jungle, they discuss/encounter the following:

  • Sawyer finally learns what "getting stuck in a net" actually means. Kate informs him that yes, she and Jack got caught in a net and yes, they actually did get caught in a net. Sawyer rolls his eyes at his own dirty mind.

  • At one point, Team 1 hears an odd noise and they all draw their weapons in shock/surprise/anticipation (note: Hurley doesn't have -- or want -- a gun). As they're looking around wildly, a giant bird swoops in and everyone ducks and scatters. Michael points his pistol and fires ... but nothing happens. He pulls the trigger over and over, but his clip is empty.

There's three notable things about this "bird" experience:

    1. The bird looked sort of invisible and/or camouflaged. I don't know if this was intentional or simply the result of bad effects (it looked like one of those ridiculous "monsters" you see in Sci-Fi Channel movies).

    2. After the bird flies by, Hurley asks, "Did that bird just say my name?" If you rewatch the scene, you'll discover that the bird actually does say "Hurley" (it's a cawing version of his hame "Hurrrr-LE") and, if you really want to get geeky, turn on the closed captioning and you'll see that the description says "bird cawing 'hurley'." I'm not making this up. Incidentally, I've heard this isn't the first time an island bird has cawed Hurley's name, although I'm not sure when -- or if -- other similar situations arose. Anyone know for sure?

    3. When Michael tries to shoot the bird (first Ana and Libby, now defenseless Hurley birds?) you can see the seeds of doubt and guilt creep into Michael's mind. Jack tosses off the empty clip as an oversight on his part, but Michael clearly senses that the jig might be up.

  • The group manages to overcome the Hurley bird incident, but a new challenge soon presents itself. Kate spots two Others tracking them from the opposite side of a narrow river. Without missing a beat, she looks at Sawyer and says: "In about five seconds, I'm going to turn the tables on them. You in?"

With that, she takes aim and unloads a barrage of bullets at the Other interlopers. Sawyer squeezes off a few rounds. The Others dart through the woods. The lead Other takes off, but the second lags and Sawyer gets a clear shot.

    BLAM!

    The Other goes down!

But the first one got away! Kate moves to pursue, believing they need to take the Other out before he can warn his cohorts (after all, this is supposed to be a sneak attack). But Jack stops her in her tracks.

Kate is confused. Sawyer is confused (but he feels really good about finally killing someone). Hurley is still thinking about that bird. Michael is worried. Very, very worried.

  • Of all the great moments in this episode, this next bit is my favorite.

Jack tells the group that it doesn't matter if they catch the Other. As you'd expect, this leads to a lot of crinkled brows and weird looks.

    Jack looks at Michael.

"I've already been warned," he says.

Michael, the bell tolls for thee!

"What do you mean, 'warned'?" Sawyer snarls.

"Why don't you tell them, Michael," Jack says as his optical death beam burns a hole in Michael's forehead.

    "I don't know what you're talkin' ..."

    "Stop LYING!" Jack screams.

The group closes in around Michael. Jack shoves Michael against a tree.

"I know what you're doing, Michael! Now tell them the truth!"

    "Jack ..." Michael pleads.

    "TELL THEM!"

"It ...," Michael stammers. "It was the only way."

Kate, Sawyer and Hurley are stunned.

"They gave me a list," Michael continues. "It had your names on it. I had to bring all four of you back or they said I'd never see my son again!"

Jack grabs the gun from Michael's belt.

Vengeance flares in Kate's face. "You let Henry go?" she asks.

    Michael nods.

From the side, Hurley snaps the pieces into place.

"Did you kill them?" Hurley asks softly.

Michael pauses. You know he doesn't want to admit this one.

    "Did you?" Hurley asks again.

Michael gulps. "I had to ... I couldn't find any other way ... and Libby was a mistake ... I didn't have time to think!"

"But if you did have time," Hurley says, "you still would have killed her, right?"

    Michael is meat.

"I'm sorry," he says. "Do you understand? I'm ... sorry."

Saying it slow doesn't mean they're gonna buy it, Mikey.

"I ... I ... This is my SON!" he says, not realizing he's talking to three people who don't have kids, thereby negating the "parent excuse."

Hurley moves to go back, but now it's Jack who has some ''splainin' to do. He blocks Hurley's path and tells him that he and Sayid have cooked up a plan. Kate, Sawyer and Hurley are stunned (again). It's yet another example of the massive trust issues these people revisit week after week after week.

Nonetheless, Jack didn't kill anyone (except for that marshal back at the beginning of season 1; but that was mercy, so, whatever), so the group opts to grudgingly continue with Jack's plan rather than douse Michael in Dharma Gas and use him as Bonfire Fodder (©).

  • The group pushes on and they eventually walk into a previously undocumented clearing. The clearing is just like every other clearing on the island except for one important difference: there's a huge pile of discarded pneumatic tubes sitting in the middle of this random spot.

Let's go over that again: there's a huge pile of discarded pneumatic tubes.

The group moves closer and Kate rifles through the tubes. Next to her stands a vertical PVC pipe that curls over the pile -- it's the source of the tubes. Inside the tubes, Kate finds notebooks with pages of handwritten observations.

Sawyer pokes through the pile (sorry, cowboy, no asthma inhalers or little liquor bottles in this stash!) and stumbles upon a single piece of paper that's not housed within a tube. He unfolds it and discovers ... Locke's map!

This is where all those Pearl hatch notebooks go.

    They go nowhere!

Sawyer turns and scans the horizon. He sees a dark plume of smoke drifting skyward. Jack sees it, but the plume is miles from their current location. Jack's anger wells. If they're miles off course, that means Michael is leading them ...

Into a trap! He never intended to bring them to the beach. He's got them in an Other crossfire!

Suddenly, whispers echo from the treeline (we haven't heard those things in a while!). Jack, Kate and Sawyer point their guns at anything and everything.

    SWOOSH!

A dart digs into Sawyer's neck and he drops like an Ana-Lucia shooting victim. He convulses!

    "Run!" Jack shouts.

Kate hauls ass. Jack hauls ass. Hurley covers his ears and tries to hide from the whispers (what's going on with that -- do the whispers play with Hurley's mind?). Michael stays put and tries to get Jack and Kate to stick around, but seeing as he's now a confessed murderer, his opinion doesn't hold much weight.

Jack and Kate run down a hill, but ...

    SWOOSH!

A dart nails Kate in the shoulder. She falls. Jack turns and fires at the treeline then lifts Kate and keeps running.

    SWOOSH!

Jack takes a dart in the leg. He staggers and falls.

The Others close in quickly with burlap sacks. The screen goes dark!

And now we turn our attention to Team 2 (don't worry, we'll come back to Team 1):

  • Sayid, Sun and Jin head out on the sailboat and as they make their way along the coastline, they sail past ... I'm not even sure how to describe this ... they sail past a giant stone foot.

Yeah. A giant stone foot. The foot appears to have once been part of an enormous statue (it looks like a set-piece from "King Kong"). Sayid wisely observes that there are two disconcerting elements to this foot:

    1. The rest of the statue is gone.

    2. The foot only has four toes.

What ... the hell ... is that thing? Was this island once home to an indigenous tribe of giant stonemasons? Did the statue depict Homer Simpson?

  • As the sea voyage continues, the trio spots the beachside relic and the Other camp Michael described when he first returned (the relic looks like a missing Stonehenge piece, or a "Spinal Tap" stage prop). Jin and Sun bring the boat ashore and Sayid turns into Action Jackson. He grabs his rifle and sneaks into the Other beach camp.

But he doesn't need to sneak. Nobody is there. Sayid goes from tent to tent, opening doors and pointing his gun into any nook and cranny he can find. The camp is abandoned.

As he looks around, he spots the metal doors to the mysterious Other Beach Hatch (in last week's episode, this door was guarded by two armed sentries). Sayid grabs the door handle and pulls. The door opens!

He peeks in and points his gun!

    And then nothing happens.

Sayid takes a step back. He looks left and right. He looks up and down.

The camera zooms out and we see Sayid, standing in front of a rock formation. The doors are fake!

And now for the big one ...

At the very end of the episode, the Others march Team 1 to the shoreline. Jack, Kate, Sawyer and Hurley are all bound and blindfolded. Michael is allowed to roam free.

The Others walk Jack, Kate, Sawyer and Hurley out onto a large wooden dock (I'm assuming this is the ferry dock). They're forced onto their knees and their burlap blindfolds are removed. Their gags and ties stay on.

The Bearded Other walks up and Kate starts to sputter. Her exact words aren't audible (she's gagged), but it's clear she's calling bullshit on the Other's fake beard. The Bearded Other appreciates Kate's comment: apparently, the beard itches and he prefers to do without it. He rips the beard off and reveals his unshaven face (the same face we saw in "Maternity Leave").

At this point -- perhaps by mistake, perhaps not -- Ms. Klugh appears and refers to the Bearded Other as "Tom." The Bearded Other -- sorry, "Tom" -- isn't happy that his real name is suddenly known to all. "And thanks for telling them my name, Bea," Tom says with maturity.

So, the Bearded Other is Tom and Ms. Klugh is Bea. Got it? Good.

All of this jabber is interesting, but it's merely a prelude for The Big Arrival.

An engine sputters nearby and the small boat seen in last season's finale ("Exodus, Part 2") comes into sight. The boat slides up to the dock and a man hops off.

Footsteps plod along the dock and the Others seem to take on a reverential air as this Special Guest Star walks through.

The man stops in front of Jack. The camera moves up.

"Hello again," says Faux Henry Gale.

Heeeeeee's baaaa-aaaaack!

Gale spins and asks Tom where his beard is, but Tom says the beard ruse is pretty much over.

Gale exhales with annoyance.

Gale turns to Michael. "All right, let's take care of business, shall we?"

It's right around this point that the loud electromagnetic pulse/Death Star Event transpires. The sky turns white and purple, the noise becomes overwhelming, everyone on the dock crouches and holds their ears (except Jack, Kate, Sawyer and Hurley -- they can't hold much of anything in their current state). Henry gazes toward the sky with a look of anger and confusion, but his look dissipates as the sound and fury subside.

Moments later, the strange electromagnetic event is long forgotten. Gale and Michael resume their "business deal."

Gale gives Michael the boat and tells him, very specifically, that he's to follow a compass bearing of 325. "If you do that exactly, you and your son will find rescue," Gale says.

Michael asks Gale what's to stop him from telling people about this place, but Gale counters in his typical mind-game fashion: He notes that any revelations Michael makes will unmask him as a killer. "Once you leave, you'll never be able to get back here," Gale says. "And my hunch is you won't say a word to anybody."

Michael knows he's got nothing at this point, so he pulls out the old "oh yeah, what about my friends" line.

"My friends ... I was promised they wouldn't hurt them," Michael says.

"Deals a deal," Henry says.

But then, for the first time in weeks, Michael actually does something reasonable. He asks the question that's on everyone's mind.

"Who are you people?"

Henry smirks. "We're the good guys, Michael."

And with that, Michael jumps on the boat and Walt suddenly appears from under the steering area (they had to keep him crouched real low because he's now 22 years old and 6'3"). Michael and Walt have a reunion (yeah, yeah, we're all so happy for you Mikey) and Michael fires up the engine and drives off. As he does, Jack shoots daggers and death beams into Michael's head.

Sadly, Michael maintains his corporeal form. It's a shame; spontaneous combustion followed by melting and screaming would have been a fitting end for Murderer Mike.

As the boat putters off, Bea -- nee Ms. Klugh -- stands in front of Hurley and instructs the Other henchmen to release him. She tells Hurley that his job is to go back to camp and tell his group that none of them can ever come here.

"What about my friends?" Hurley asks.

Henry steps up.

Wait for it ... waaaaaait for it ...

"Your friends are coming home with us," Henry says.

What? What?!! WHAT?!!!

Hurley is torn, but Jack nods at him ("go on big man ... go get Sayid ... go round up the Delta Force and come back at the end of season three to kick ass!"). Hurley slowly walks away.

The Others lift Jack, Kate and Sawyer.

Jack stares at Kate intently. It looks like he nods -- it's as though they're signaling to each other -- but his movement is incredibly subtle. Kate looks back and blinks. Sawyer looks at both of them and wonders what the hell is going on.

The Others drape a burlap bag over Jack's head ... then Sawyer's ... then Kate's ...

The screen goes black.

BUT IT'S NOT OVER!

Point 4
Island The last five minutes of this episode pushed this finale into the pantheon of great cliffhangers.

So here's what happens ...

After the burlap sacs go over Jack, Kate and Sawyer, the scene cuts to an arctic drilling station.

You read that correctly.

For the first time, a present-day "Lost" scene -- not a flashback -- jumps away from the island. This is a HUGE development.

The drilling station is staffed by two Portuguese men (Scientists? Miners? Grunts? I have no idea). The men appear to spend their days playing chess and trying to keep warm.

But this day is different.

During a spirited chess match, one of the men looks up from the board and sees a red blinking light on a nearby computer. His face drops.

A message on the computer screen reads:

Electromagnetic Anomaly Detected

The man looks at his partner.

"How long has it been doing that?" the first man asks (in Portuguese), pointing to the red light.

The second man jumps from his seat and runs to a desk. He cracks open a folder and shuffles wildly through papers.

The first man is upset.

"That's it, isn't it?" the first man asks/yells. "We missed it again!"

An alarm beeps and both men jump. The second man darts to a separate computer and scans through on-screen readouts.

"So it's not a false alarm this time?" the first man asks.

"Just shut up and call!" the second man shouts.

The first man grabs a yellow telephone and dials.

The scene cuts to a bedroom. A bedside table holds a phone, keys, perfume, and a picture of a man and a woman ... it's hard to make out who they are at first ...

The phone on the table rings. A woman with an English accent answers.

The scene cuts to the arctic station.

"Ms. Widmore?" the first man says in accented English. "It's us."

The shot cuts to the bedroom. Ms. Widmore turns on her bedside lamp. The light illuminates the picture -- it's Desmond and Penny! It's the same picture Desmond carries!

The shot cuts to the arctic station.

"I think we found it," the first man says.

In the bedroom, the camera pans ... revealing the stunned face of Penny Widmore.

AND THEN IT ENDS! OH MY GOD, THE SEASON ENDS!

Point 5
Island I'm going to wrap up with a potpourri of questions and observations.

First, the questions (in no particular order):

  • What happened to Locke, Eko and Desmond? Are they dead? Are they alive? Are they in purgatory? (Heh heh ... couldn't resist.)

  • What happened to the hatch? Is it completely destroyed?

  • If the hatch is destroyed, what will the repercussions be? Will the hatch meltdown cause another plane crash? Or a boat crash? Or create a rift in the space-time continuum that allows super-intelligent apes to sneak through and claim supremacy over man? (Maybe I'm getting ahead of myself with that last one ...)

  • What will Penny Widmore do?

  • Will the story expand to include off-island events that are Widmore-centric?

  • Will Michael and Walt make it to safety?

  • What will happen to Jack, Kate and Sawyer?

  • Is Henry Gale "Him"?
And now, a few miscellaneous observations:
  • You'll notice my first question makes no mention of Charlie. That's because Charlie survives the electromagnetic blast with nary a scratch. This works out quite well because it allows him to return to camp and then, later that night, Claire kisses him. Good for them ... for now (bwahahahaha!)
  • This episode's Hanso ad featured the Web site www.HansoCareers.com. As always, you can find an ever-growing list of Interactive Game clues and theories on our game clues page.

And finally a personal note to all you awesome people ...

I want to thank everyone who contributed to this blog over the course of the second season. You guys rule so hard it hurts.

Each week, I'm impressed/amazed/overwhelmed by the great conversations that have become a hallmark of this little "Lost" spot, and I look forward to many seasons -- and many conversations -- to come!

And for the regulars: WGNBB and Namaste ;)

That's it for now ... and for this season! Be sure to drop by our "Lost" Forum for stimulating conversation and conjecture.

Mac, you are absolutely the best!!!

Thanks for spending so much of your time writing the summaries each week. We'll all miss you over the summer!!!

Are you going to have a Pre-Lost review before the new season???

Thanks again!!!

Penny's father is "Him".

Mac, Thanks for another great season of reviews. But my all time favorite Mac-ism occurred in part 1 of this review: "The power of Eko compels you!" I love it!
I loved this episode but I think I need to watch it again before I make any comments this time, too much info to digest!
WGNABB!

You are the man Mac! Nice work yet again. I sure hope that you will resume your recaps next season.

Marty.

Mac, you are the shiznito bam snip snap snap on breakfast toast, my friend!!!! I'm gonna miss this place.

#6. Posted by: IcebergSlimm at May 25, 2006 2:31 PM

Thanks for the time and talent you put on this project Mac. I´ve been reading you for a while and since in Mexico we are about in the middle of the season, curiosity is just too much...

Now, I´ll just print both parts and keep reading while at work.

Regards from your friend djjoeycool

When the Portugese man exclaims "We missed it again", I'm thinking he is referring to the inicident with the hatch 65 days ago. How Penny Widmore knew how to look for an electromagnetic signal is beyond me, but Widmore Construction supposedly built the hatches, so maybe Mr Widmore knows more about the Hanso Foundation and the Island?

wooo.(scary interlude)

#8. Posted by: Chris Jones at May 25, 2006 2:32 PM

A couple of Comments:

-Locke was crying like a baby when charlie found him and Charlie was LOVING it!
-Maybe Libby's dead husband was Dave from the mental hospital? Maybe Hurley killed him in that accident and that is why Hurley keeps seeing him! That could be why Libby seems to be "stalking" Hurley - Revenge!
-Where did they get the Dharma brew? How long till I can get a 40oz. of that stuff! Does Des know another storage hatch or did Kelvin stock the boat with booze?
-One of the reasons Des felt safe to follow Kelvin out of the hatch is because Des saw a hole in Kelvin's pant leg - must have figured if Kelvin was going out with a hole in his pants he would be ok.
-Two very funny lines missing:

When Eko asks Charlie if he knows "where's the dynamite." Charlie says he doesn't "know that one"!!! I think I missed quoted, but it was still funny.

Also, when the bird flies by and Hurley asked "Did that bird just say my name?" Sawyer responds "Yeah...and it just crapped gold!" Those were hillarious!

I can't wait until next season! I wonder if they will show any season 1 repeats this summer - I need to get them on DVD!

#9. Posted by: MattR at May 25, 2006 2:34 PM

By the way, I consider myself a regular, but I dont get it...WGNBB and Namaste?

Perhaps some light please!!!!

Crispy, you might be on to something, but something tells me "him" even answers to someone.

#11. Posted by: IcebergSlimm at May 25, 2006 2:35 PM

So, it came to a close. I sat there stunned for a moment and then, slowly, rose from my chair in a daze.

I walked from the TV room into my wife's office where she had been working and watching something mundane, like a two-year old repeat of "Law and Order:SVU". She turned and says, "So how was the last two hours?"

And all I could reply was..."I have no idea what just happened!?!"

And now, MAC, after reading your very detailed recap, I can say, with a certain magnanimous clarity, that...."I still don't know what just happened!?!"

O Man, it's going to be a very lonnnnnnnng summer before the Fall TV Season gets here!

At least, in a few weeks, that cute detective series, "The Closer" comes back for the summer. It's a brainless diversion. Just what I need.

Thanks for a great season of RECAPS!

#12. Posted by: David at May 25, 2006 2:40 PM

I just read that whole re-cap and didn't find out who won American Idol!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just kidding- Great Job Mac I've been reading since the begining of the season. Websites like this are what makes this show soooo much better!

#13. Posted by: Kimmy at May 25, 2006 2:41 PM

the most intriguing part for me was the secret signals between jack and kate, do they know something?!

anyone know when season 3 starts?

#14. Posted by: Adam at May 25, 2006 2:44 PM

Great summary Mac thank you.

I was very dissapointed in the show. I think mostly because I really sensed 'cameras' If you understand my meaning. I did not BELIEVE the episodes.

Also, I have genuine regrets with thye overall storyline and plot . I am not dismissing LOST however, I certainly am listing it as MISSING.

ITS STILL GREAT !! However, I will reserve comments in coffee shops as it appears that our heros are not only hostages to this island, but to the islands 'creators' as well.

EXODUS KICKED ASS.

#15. Posted by: Neil at May 25, 2006 2:46 PM

The Portuguese men are Jack and Desmond. Compare the screen captures of the two. The man with the glasses is Jack. The other man is Desmond.

#16. Posted by: EvilGator at May 25, 2006 2:48 PM

All I can say is WOW. I love it and hated it at the same time.

Do you think Jack, Kate and Mikey worked something out before they got caught?

I can't believe anything bad has come of Locke, Eko and Des. Now way, no how.

When I saw the picture of Des and Pen at the end I was like NO WAY! What the ?

Great job Mac.

#17. Posted by: Lisa at May 25, 2006 2:56 PM

Awesome job on all the reviews all year, Mac.
Thanks for all the entertainment.

Now we all need to go back and watch all the episodes from the beginning, then go back and read Mac's early reviews of them before next season starts.

#18. Posted by: Zeppo at May 25, 2006 3:03 PM

I may have read your recap wrong, but I thought you said that it was later in the day after Kelvin Died that Desmond heard banging on the hatch door...wouldn't it have to be several days later if the mini-event that Desmond created caused the plane crash)?

I love your key points they are the best part of Lost in my opinion.

#19. Posted by: Summer at May 25, 2006 3:08 PM

First time poster; Mac, stubbled on your blog and its what I look forward to after I watch LOST. You have done a great job this season and I look forward to reading more in September.

So does anyone think that Michael will come back and save Jack, Kate & Sawyer? or will he just sail on?

Have a great summer everyone

#20. Posted by: orighu at May 25, 2006 3:09 PM

Boy, they really know how to wreck a nice hatch.
Anybody know who Libby's husband "David" might be?
I was really stunned that Desmond would think the button wasn't real after having almost missed it another time with the ground shaking and metal flying everywhere....
Anyone notice that the map Locke sent up the tube was out of it's container?
Great recap Mac, you'll be missed many a Thursday this summer....thanks!

#21. Posted by: Joss at May 25, 2006 3:13 PM

Just a couple of notes:

- Kelvin mentioned that Radzinski spliced the tapes, but Kelvin didn't know why Radzinski did it.
- Desmond called Locke "Box-Man" referring to Locke's previous job at Hurley's box company.
- Did Kelvin really die???? We are led to believe that he is because his body went limp and there was a lot of blood from his head, but Desmond ran away so fast that we really don't know if Kelvin is dead (we didn't see his grave, either). Perhaps he crawled away after Desmond left????

Again, Mac, you are the best. I don't have any idea how I am going to spend my Thursday afternoon if I'm not reading your incredible recap. I guess I actually have to work now???

#22. Posted by: dknight at May 25, 2006 3:14 PM

Mac,

Great job all season. Love your recap of the final episode. I just don't know how I'll live throught the summer without new episodes and your witty recaps, i can already feel the withdrawal symptoms kicking in. I DVR'd the final episode and I'll be watching it and rewatching it at least a hundred times. I can't wait for next season to start and I've already pre-ordered season 2 on DVD.

I have a question about the hatch explosion - what kind of explosion would propel the hatch door 2 miles but not create a sound or smoke? Anyone have any thoughts?

See you in the fall mac ! ! ! !

#23. Posted by: Mister Grimm at May 25, 2006 3:14 PM

IcebergSlimm....was there a copy of 'Mama Black Widow' in the hatch? ;)

#24. Posted by: Joss at May 25, 2006 3:16 PM

They are in the Bermuda Triangle. The others, who are aliens, made the Triangle to be able to study humans. Possible looking for something in particular. Read this article and notice the similarities.

http://www.navis.gr/miscella/bermuda.htm

I know they were not in the path of this, but one of the theories of the Bermuda Triangle is that it moves around.

#25. Posted by: erdrik at May 25, 2006 3:16 PM

NO that is not jack and desmond....if you read the credits you'll see that two different actors play them and the voices do not even remotely come close to sounding like either of them accent or not. so don't waste space or time with comments that hold absolutely no bearing......oh wait, maybe desmond and jack took the time machine that brought them to the World War II era in purgatory located in the bermuda triangle.....if only they would've taken the videos that recorded them in the hatch for all that time they could've caught on to michael earlier and avoided all of this....

#26. Posted by: HEY EVILGATOR at May 25, 2006 3:17 PM

One thing. Based on your review, Desmond's killing his hatch buddy and his almost being too late to enter the numbers happened the same day as Locke's banging on the hatch door. Assuming the plane crash was caused by that event, there must have been some passage of time that wasn't clear from the editing.

#27. Posted by: JTZ at May 25, 2006 3:18 PM

Joss-
If I remember correctly Locke didn't put his map in a container. He merely put it in the tube and watched it go up.

#28. Posted by: crispy seaplane at May 25, 2006 3:23 PM

Awesome review Mac!

The season's over, we've lost a friend. I'm feeling a little overklempt! Let me give you a topic to discuss amongst yourselves!

The Others - are they really good guys? Who are the bad guys? Hostiles? Dharma? FHG said to Ana that they didn't kill anybody. Have they? Didn't Goodwin kill a tailie earlier in the season? DISCUSS!

#29. Posted by: jake3841 at May 25, 2006 3:26 PM

I can not even begin to comprehend this episode. Thanks for trying to help me out here, Mac.

That "snowglobe" line BETTER NOT be a reference to St. Elsewhere and the outcome of that show, or a hint about this show in any regard....or else I am GNABB!

I don't know if we can assume Des is dead....he didn't read that book yet, did he?

What's to make of Pen? Is she somehow involved in funding this whole thing? How on earth could that electromagnetic anomoly mean to call her and let her know Des is found? I am really not being hypothetical here...I need some help with this one. I don't understand the connection between Des winding up there after a boat accident and her being able to locate him unless he had some sort of tracking device on him in the first place....any thoughts or ideas?

By far, my favorite line of the entire episode was Locke: "I was wrong..."...thanks, captain obivous!

Do we know of any "Tom" or "Bea" from anyone else's backstory?

I thought FHG was "him"....but maybe, just maybe it is Mr. Widemore...

That's all for now....see y'all in here real soon....WGNABB!

Namaste...

#30. Posted by: Vikki at May 25, 2006 3:28 PM

Desmond isn't dead.....A major part of next season will be Pen looking for him.

Wouldn't make much sense to kill him off

#31. Posted by: OYE at May 25, 2006 3:30 PM

dknight: I thought Des was saying "boss man" to Locke, but I could be wrong...anyone have CC and can tell us? Thanks...

#32. Posted by: Vikki at May 25, 2006 3:32 PM

The line is BOX-Man....
yes, that's correct say it with me "BOX MAN"

#33. Posted by: OYE at May 25, 2006 3:33 PM

WGNABB!

Mac, you are the man! I don't think anyone can do the great job you did with this review...hats off buddy!!! There are so many great lines in this review that I can't pick the best one...one of my all-time favorites throughout the season:"...it was michael and he looked like ass".

Props to the writers for tying up all those loose threads...goes to prove that they don't wing this thing as the show goes on. This is definitely the best show on the planet!

What was that look between Jack and Kate??? Can't wait to find out!!

And whats with Charlie seeming so relaxed despite no word of Eko and Locke? He seemed so genuinely concerned about both of them before and after the explosion but at the beach he seems so oblivious to it all...despite the naggings from claire for more info. I wonder what he is upto!

We definitely haven't seen the last of either of the Widmores. I was so convinced that the "ice men" would be calling Charles Widmore but was I surprised to see Penny...maybe she is Percephone????

Did anyone else watch Jimmy Kimmel and the Hugh McIntire interview? Thoughts on that?

I love this show and I can't wait for season 3 to start. mac, we're gonna miss you this summer man...better look for a bigger boat while you are not writing the recaps!!

#34. Posted by: katePlusSun=Fun at May 25, 2006 3:35 PM

Crispy Sea Plane,
Of course, now I remember, thanks. Just getting a little ahead of myself there.....I just went a little crazy when I saw all the tubes!!!

#35. Posted by: Joss at May 25, 2006 3:36 PM

dknight--

Desmond didn't call Locke "Box Man", he called him bossman.

#36. Posted by: illusivemuse at May 25, 2006 3:39 PM

I didn't think Jack and Kate were giving eachother signals.

I thought Jack actually looked evil, almost maniacle (sp?) like "ha ha ha, all part of my plan" type deal.

#37. Posted by: OYE at May 25, 2006 3:40 PM

Can anyone tell me about the Hanso commercial? Episodes that air in Canada have canadian commercials....poo.

#38. Posted by: Joss at May 25, 2006 3:40 PM

illusivemuse
CC stated it as 'Box Man'.

#39. Posted by: Joss at May 25, 2006 3:42 PM

The map wasn't in a container - it was laying loose in the pile of containers.

#40. Posted by: norockets at May 25, 2006 3:42 PM

djjoeycool....WGNBB = we're gonna need a bigger boat.

Namaste = read the previous episode's bog entries....it can mean any of a number of things, not the least of which is "While in purgatory, it is critical to rewind the tapes so one can witness Michael's behavior."

Also, to whoever said this, I think Desmond called Locke "Boss Man", not "Box Man".

Great episode and great review, Mac. Loved the line "HOLY CRAP ON TOAST". Shows you read all the blog entries and we somehow get in to your brain and stick. Also loved the Homer Simpson statue line.

#41. Posted by: socompletelylost at May 25, 2006 3:45 PM

Did anyone notice that part of Desmond's name--the "David Hume" part--is an 18th century philospher? I'm not all that familiar with philosphers, so can someone tell me if there is any rhyme or reason to naming so many characters after philosophers (Lock, Rousseau, and now Hume)? Are the philosopher-named characters' thoughts or behaviors at all connected with their particular philosopher's theories?

When is someone with the name Decartes going to make an appearance on the show??

#42. Posted by: FirstTimePoster at May 25, 2006 3:47 PM

katePlusSun=Fun -

I did stay up and watch that Hugh McIntyre interview on Kimmel - how could you go to sleep after that 2-hour episode???? Anyhow, these guys (producers) are so freakin' ridiculously smart...they have taken marketing a tv show to a new level (fake Oceaninc website, fake Hanso website, Lost Experience, interview with ficticious Hanso Communications director, etc..). Although we won't have Mac's reviews to look forward to each week, we can eagerly await the next Lost Experience clue...

BTW - has anyone read Bad Twin yet? I've heard that it is a pretty good mystery novel (besides giving some history on the Hanso Foundation, Paik, and Widmore).

#43. Posted by: dknight at May 25, 2006 3:49 PM

sorry guys, forgot to mention a few other things.

i am so glad they brought back FHG...great actor who I love to hate.

Locke has officially lost his Obi-Locke title...I couldn't believe my eyes when he was crying...I hope Eko kicks his a$$ for causing the hatch meltdown.

I am pretty convinced the writers of the show read this blog...The way they throw in these subtle lines that are a mirror reflection to some of the comments i read here convinces me. Eg. Sawyer asking Mike if he thought the Others were former Dharma guys or something to that effect...have to rewatch the show again to memorize all the lines!!

whoever predicted the exchange between Sawyer and Kate about the whole "caught in a net" issue...you are a genius...or maybe one of the writers just like i predicted.

Man, I really wanted Hurley to tackle Michael (like he did Sawyer in Dave)when he confessed to the hatch killings.

well, this is all i can think of right now but more later!

#44. Posted by: katePlusSun=Fun at May 25, 2006 3:50 PM

hey all and hey MAC--you rock my man!!!!

two quick tidbits:

1) Aside from the Widmore sightings on the Preg Test and the hot air balloon, I believe in "The Long Con" when Sawyer and Cassidy meet for some exchange or scam, in the background of the shot you can see Widmore Industries, labs, etc. and it looks like a factory or warehouse.

2) You mentioned that after the "incident" with Desmond and the electromagnet (which brought down flight 815) Desmond sits down and reads his Dickens book. I would imagine that it was either a continuity error by the producers or Desmond sat down to read a few weeks after the "incident"--since right after he hears Locke topside.

and Mac, as always brother, you are the best

#45. Posted by: cinefyl at May 25, 2006 3:51 PM

Grrrrrrrrrreat Work Mac, your re-caps and this Season will be missed for the 4+ months.

TO JOSS:
Q: "Anyone notice that the map Locke sent up the tube was out of it's container?"

A: That is because he did not but it in one. He just shot the paper w/out a container up the tube.

dknight, i did watch the mcintyre interview...i just wanted to know what y'all thought about it!

#48. Posted by: katePlusSun=Fun at May 25, 2006 3:53 PM

So what are everyone's theories on the statue? I haven't read a word of it!

The statue remnant proves that this island is ancient.(Giant statues haven't been created and unnoticed for at least 3 or 4 centuries!)

The statue having 4 toes somehow tells us that man has evolved since the day in which the statue was created. I could speculate more but that much is proven. Whether the 4 toes is going to lead us into the extraterrestrial or just a race of humans more "pure" than the lot of us, I'm not sure, but I would bet Dharma is researching it, based on the following:

-They kidnap only the "good ones"
-They give Walt "tests"
-They take Michaels blood
-They only "kill" when their mission is threatened. (Has anyone else noticed this!? Think back to Ethan and then Sullivan with the tailies. Ethan was going to kill until he got Claire. Sullivan killed to protect his mission of getting Ana Lucia or whoever.)

Any one else have great statue ideas!

i agree that the makers of the show are extremely smart. goes to show how much money they are making to go to all the troubles that they have so far.

did anyone else catch who the hanso commercial last night was paid by. and Joss, the commercial said to visit the site www.HansoCareers.com for more info.

#50. Posted by: katePlusSun=Fun at May 25, 2006 3:55 PM

I heard Tom/Zeke say something interesting when they were on the pier before Michael left. I forget who he was talking to and I don't know the exact words but he said something like "Walt was such an amazing find." Did anyone else catch this? Makes me wonder why they would be letting Walt go if he is so valuable. Actually, maybe fake Henry said it.

#51. Posted by: diamondgirl at May 25, 2006 3:55 PM

when sayid goes to check out the door in the abandoned others camp, did he hear a knocking first? or was that just sound effects/orchestration?

the writers did a great job with the show, but i still think it is bad writing that the 4 people on michael's list just happened to be the four people in the hatch when libby and ana lucia died. and after all that convincing of hurley to go, the others just let him go. maybe they'll explain it in a future season, but it was just too convenient (and so far useless) to have those specific people.

i liked that henry gale seemed to be someone in authority (i assumed he was just a flunkie) and i also liked that he had some honor. he honored the deal they made even though he didn't like it.

i also thought eko's plan was badly concocted. he has experience with weaponry and the like (from his pre-priest days)--he should know what blast doors are for. or at the very sought a better hiding place.

finally someone wondered if kelvin was dead--didn't desmond say that he buried him (at the beginning of season 2?)..

i like the connection someone made between david (libby dead husband), the person hurley killed and hurley's invisible friend.

is libby a real nickname for elizabeth?

Mac,
You rock my world buddy. You have a great talent for writing these reviews, and it is obviously much appreciated by everyone who watches the show. As for the comment posted by HEY EVILGATOR I'd like to say that people's comments/theories should not be thwarted just because they may seem wrong in your eyes. Have a little more respect - personally I appreciate all comments nomatter how bogus they may seem. Everyone has the right to put in their two cents.
Here's to hoping that next season we will find out what the hell Jack's tatoo means (It's been bothering me since the beginning)
Mac, cheers to the end of a great season and the beginning of another - you're the best man.

#53. Posted by: Jonny at May 25, 2006 3:59 PM

Diamondgirl:
I can't remember if it was Tom or HG that said it, but I know what you are refering to. He said something about Walt being more than they could have imagined or expected. Sounds like he was refering to Walt's abilities or powers. Maybe they don't need Walt anymore because they have his and Michael's DNA and plan to clone him? I dunno.

Can anyone give me some insight on the Hugh McIntyre interview, sad to say I missed it :(

#54. Posted by: IcebergSlimm at May 25, 2006 4:01 PM

I love reading your blogs, mac, because they always pick up on little clues/details I miss. No hi def, tivo here :(

I'm hoping that Locke and Eko (and maybe Desmond) made it into the area of the hatch off the computer room and hotwired the blast doors down. Why would Dharma even build those huge blast doors if it wasn't to protect life from a "system termination" event...

Charlie was acting very suspicious, and a little too unconcerned about Eko and Locke. Maybe Clair just turns his brain to mush...

What is with that giant foot statue, the stone window landmark, and that weird bird?

Maybe it's not aliens, but ancient civilizations. I think the others/hostiles home is underground, not underwater. They're always dirty/dusty. Maybe in some big cave somewhere, protected from the electromagnetism by the rock formations. No, wait, maybe that was a Trek show...

The camera did linger for a looong time on Jack and Kate's wierd blinking. Maybe they're hoping the others take them "home" so they can find out where it is -- all part of Jack's plan??

Going to rewind and watch my tapes tonight.

p.s. Joss (?) -- thanks for the Jaws WGNBB explanation. Shark-phobia here.

Has anybody read that Dickens book???

#55. Posted by: lost chao at May 25, 2006 4:02 PM

Still reading the review, but I found one thing I think is a mistake in part one. You note that, after Desmond's issue with the system failure that "Later that day" he hears Locke pounding on the hatch door. I'm thinking this must be quite a bit later. Presuming that it was Desmond's failure to punch in the code that caused Flight 915 to crash, it was a few weeks after that that Boone died and Locke had his epiphany moment on the other side of the door. My guess is that Desmond had spent those few weeks on a bender of sorts, trying to decide what to do now that he was all alone in the world, and had finally decided to kill himself (after reading his precious book).

#58. Posted by: Bridget at May 25, 2006 4:03 PM

Mac, I can't say it any other way that hasn't been said, but: THANKS!!!!!!!!

Great season, great efforts all year to build the best LOST community that I've found so far.

See you in another life, brother. Or next season, whichever comes first.

#59. Posted by: KG at May 25, 2006 4:04 PM

Thanks Mac, once again Great review! You catch all the little details I miss.

Ok so here are some quick thoughts because I am still overwhelmed by it.
- I was very disappointed in Locke (even though I know it needed to happen to find out about the button) he was acting like Michael, all crazed and selfish - pissed me off

- My theory on Penny looking out for magnetic anomalies - Desmond told her he was going on her father's race, I 'm sure the sailing route would be public knowledge, and if she saw that it went by the island. I assume she works for Widmore, it seems to be a family thing, if she did some research maybe she found out what went on there. Her father would know that Desmond was in the race, maybe he planned for Desmond to go by the island and get sucked in. My first thought when I saw the ending was that she had to know what to look for, so she must be involved somehow.

And I don't know what anyone is saying goodbye for the summer (so dramatic), there are so many new questions that could have us debating and pondering for more than just a summer. I for one will be rewatching the episodes and following the interactive game to find out more about Hanso and Widmore. Wonder what the consequences will be for not pushing the button, more planes & boats crashing, is the polarity of the earth changed, are the polar ice caps melting, are the menstrual cycles of all the women on the island aligned ( I think that last one would suck the most ;) So many questions. . . . .

#60. Posted by: Mary at May 25, 2006 4:07 PM

Sayid has gotta be lurking, waiting to make his move.
I have to believe Michael and Walt are gonna snap out of it after they keep ending up back at the island and go back to rally the losties for a rescue mish.

"WGNBB"

#61. Posted by: thinng at May 25, 2006 4:12 PM

Mac: Thanks so much for your great reviews; I look forward to every Thursday and will probably start going into withdrawal in the next few days.

"I ... I ... This is my SON!" he says, not realizing he's talking to three people who don't have kids, thereby negating the "parent excuse." This line was hilarious.

I think Walt and Michael are gone for good; nice that the producers could "get rid" of characters without having to kill them.

Anyway, the stage is set for the show to move in an entirely different direction and I can hardly wait till fall. I'm just so glad that Lost answered a lot of questions and didn't go all "Twin Peaks" on us.

#62. Posted by: Kathy at May 25, 2006 4:12 PM

If you want to watch the interview with Hugh McIntyre, go to:

It's near the bottom.

#63. Posted by: Zeppo at May 25, 2006 4:13 PM

If Michael and Walt actually do sail off and find rescue, who's going to take care of Vincent? Will Walt teleport himself back to the beach to pick him up?

Also, I believe the foot statue is that of Fred Flintstone, not Homer Simpson.:) Or, perhaps it's not a foot at all. Maybe the 4 "toes" represent something. Is there a "Four [blanks] of [blank]" anywhere in Buddhism?

#64. Posted by: Trinity at May 25, 2006 4:14 PM

All our theories are fun and entertaining to read, but did anyone else get a KICK out of Saywer sayin': "My Theory Is ___________..."? It was like the writers were almost saying they monitor and read all the theories that are out there. It is their way of poking-fun at all us LOST RUBES. Genius.

-Bryan

#65. Posted by: Bryan at May 25, 2006 4:15 PM

Maybe the statue only had four toes because the person who the statue was of, lost a pinkie toe during the "incident"

and Charlie, what the heck is up with him? He left Eko in the rubble and walked out to the beach? i know he has no love lost for Locke, but cmon, he left his priest there!!

Oh and when the hatch door was comin in for a landing and Bernard saved Claire and the baby from gettin smashed, AT FIRST, i thought it was a piece of another plane that got plucked from the sky! for that split second, i thought we were gonna have some more Lostaways.

Interesting Dickens' connection: "Our Mutual Friend" is not only the last book Desmond intended to read, it was also the last book Dickens ever finished writing. Dickens started "The Mystery of Edwin Drood" after "Our Mutual Friend" but died before he could complete it.

In addition, The New York Times also reports in today's paper that this is a reference to writer John Irving ("The World According to Garp," etc).

Here is the quote from the article:

http://www.nytimes.com/2006/05/25/arts/television/25lost.html

"During a visit to New York City last week, Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse, the executive producers who run "Lost," said they got the idea of the deathbed reading of "Our Mutual Friend" from an interview with the writer John Irving in which he said he was saving it for last. But besides paying tribute to Mr. Irving, they were eager to refer to Dickens for their own narrative purposes.

"He was writing chapter by chapter for newspapers," Mr. Cuse said. "We often think: 'How much did Dickens know when he was writing his stories? How much of it was planned out, and how much was flying by the seat of his pants because he had to get another chapter in?' " He paused, then said with a laugh, "We can respect what he went through."

#69. Posted by: Henry at May 25, 2006 4:18 PM

Anyone recall anything about Claire's conversation with Desmond where she was telling him about Aaron's father? It struck me at the time like it might be important and got me thinking again of the possibility of Christian being the father.

#70. Posted by: crispy seaplane at May 25, 2006 4:25 PM

I think we're going to see Desmond again sometime in the third season. Here are the facts : In the beginning of the second season, during Jack's flashback we see Desmond helping him after he [Jack] sprained his ankle. His last words were: "See you in another life" Later we see Desmond in the hatch. Second, when Desmond decides to ditch the hatch he says these words again, and we yet again see Desmond in this episode manning a sailboat. During the last five minutes of the episode, Desmond says "see you in another life" again to Locke just after he turns the key. I think that we will see him in the future.

Your right Crispy Seaplane, I remember thinking maybe Desmond abandoned a baby or maybe Penny wanted to have a baby before he went to prision. He looked upset afer Claire said that her boyfriend knew what he was doing when he left her and that he did it for himself (can't remember exact quote)

#73. Posted by: Mary at May 25, 2006 4:30 PM

- NY Times had an article about lost in todays issue. They producers/writers acknowledged that they read the internet/etc and that they purposely (sp) tied up some outstanding items. Good article overall.
- Is Penny's dad the 'founder of hanso'. If u see the commerical they profile looks like thim (okay or onther white male)
- if the guys on the polar outpost look the same - maybe this is a cloning experimenet?
- speaking of which: i think there are two hanso experiments going on at the same time (maybe three) - electromagnetic, pscyhological and cloning. all part of the military industrial complex.
- about the boat: i think that fhg is pointing mike/son toward jin/sayeed (knowing that they are coming)... they will meet and somethign will ahppen. That is my take on it

Okay thanks again for the posts and for the reviews.

Dumb question - where is the link for the interactive game and the hints. Gonna be a long summer

Does anybody else think that Libby is much more involved with the Hanso Foundation than the show has let on so far? I don't think it was a coincidence that she just happened to be at the same coffee shop as Desmond, happened to have a sailboat to give away, and happened to be in the same mental institution as Hurley. I think she was recruiting people to bring onto the island. She is also the only main Lostaway whose backstory we haven't seen (right?).

Also, if you go to thehansofoundation.org, there is a board of directors member named Liddy (almost Libby) but no picture.

Thoughts?

#75. Posted by: SSJoe at May 25, 2006 4:34 PM

Catching up with some of the other comments:

(1) Since someone asked, I have read "Our Mutual Friend" and seen the British Mini Series of it on PBS. The main connection I see to "Lost" is the one already mentioned: the book, as its title implies, is about connections between people, more specifically the story shows how connections exist across social classes, from the very rich to the very poor.

(2) I might be wrong but I took Jack and Kate's glances at the end as indicating that Jack hopes the Others will take their captives back to the Other Village where Team 2 is waiting. However, as has been mentioned, the Other Village may be just a set and the real Other base may be elsewhere.

(3) The topic of naming characters after philosophers was mentioned. Personally, I find that this is just a literary device. In my view writers who use this device generally don't know anything more about the phiilosphers in question than what one can read in a brief encylopedia entry, so there's no use looking any great deep meanings there...This device iss used in the cartoon strip "Calvin and Hobbes" for instance! Naturally one can always come up with some sort of connection. Examples: Jean-Jacques Rousseau the philosopher wrote about man in the "state of nature" before civilization and David Hume was a Scottish philosopher who died happy in bed even though he didn't believe in an afterlife, etc.

(4) Why did they let Walt go? What if they have recruited him and he will be an agent for them back in the real world? This idea inspired by the reference to Walt "joining" them.

#76. Posted by: Henry at May 25, 2006 4:40 PM

Speaking of Walt, we didn't find out what "The Room" is either. But no doubt Jack, Kate and Sawyer will...

Also, totally ridiculous, but the group I was with laughed for 5 minutes after I made the joke: "Locke and Eko will be fused by the magnetic anomaly, and will now be referred to as Lo-ko."

(You haven't seen 'The Thing with Two Heads'? For shame!)

#77. Posted by: The Duf at May 25, 2006 4:47 PM

Locke didn't send the map in a container. He just opened the neumatic tube and the paper was sucked up the tube by itself.

My theory is that Penny Widmore's Dad runs the Dharma project, for whatever kinky reason, and she found out about the secret island with the weird electromagnetic shit going on; she also found out somehow that Desmond is stuck on that island. So she set up a research team to watch for anything weird happening "out there." Otherwise, how would she know to be looking for that in particular and how would it lead her to Desmond? She knew he was racing around the world, thus might be "lost at sea," so she's trying to track him down. I love her line about how you can find anyone if you have enough money. Totally ties in to the end of the show. Awesome!

Also, this disproves the theories that the rest of the world is gone or whatever.

I am so going to be devastated if Locke, Eko and Desmond are dead. My husband says there is no way they will kill off Locke and Eko, but I think the history of the show proves that they are willing to kill off characters at the drop of a hat. Granted, no one major has died yet, but still....

And I definitely thought there was some signalling going on between Kate and Jack with their eyebrows, nods, etc. Very subtle, but definitely there. It shows how good these actors are that they can communicate so much with just the tiniest tilt of their heads.

And I think "Tom" calls Miss Klugh by the name "Dee," not Bea. Not that it matters much.

I loved the expression on Henry Gale's face when the loud noise starts. As if to say, "Oh shit, here we go again..."

#78. Posted by: Amanda at May 25, 2006 4:48 PM

Thanks, friends, for your theories on Penny and the anomaly necessitating a call to her....I see it a bit more clearly now...not sure, still, how she would know about that specific anomoly and then inherently understand that it means Desmond is there....is there a chance they have to call her for another reason and she doesn't realize Desmond is there??? That's a bit more LOST like....

I was thinking....Sayid probably saw this all "go down" on the pier...if he knew enough to realize that Michael was compromised in the first place, he probably also realized there was no way Michael was taking them exactly where he said he would...not sure yet how Sayid would know where to find them or be able to do this undetected, but just the seedling of a theory...

Also, who's to say that Kelvin is really dead? I mean, granted, the whole brains and blood thing on the rock would probably allude to the fact that he is, but could you imagine the look on Sayid's face if he encountered Kelvin on the island somewhere?

I thought it was a BIG FAT CLUE as to where the island is if Desmond said:
1. He was traveling due west
2. He was traveling 9 knots an hour
3. He should have wound up in Fiji in less than a week.

Now, is that 'cause he knows where he is to start out with, or is he just using Fiji as a hypothetical destination? If is is the first one, can anyone do the math and fiddle with their geographic skills to figure out where this could be? I lack the skills in both areas....

One last thing...I like how Desmond and Locke were each other's salvation...all the while taking place as they both stared into a bright light at the end of a tunnel...

That's all for now, y'all...namaste

and PS...WGNABB!

Thanx Henry for the info. on the philosophers. I can see now how the characters somewhat tie in with their namesakes. I won't contine to ponder the point too much further since the naming seems to be just a bit of superficial cleverness on the writer's part.

mac, no one can say it enough, but you're wonderful at what you do. thank you for all your hard work! you rock my socks off! do you or does filmfodder have a myspace site? you should...
on the ep...i really thought that the people in the anartic (or where ever) were looking for the boat that desmond used. since we don't know excatly WHEN that was when the dot started blinking.
who knew (someone did and forgive for not knowing who excatly) that they had if not the leader, one of the higher ups in the other camp. i would have never thought that anyone in a high ranking spot would have put themselves on the line like that but then again cpt. picard did it all the time...
i really hope we're done with the mike walt story line. ugh...... and yeah what about vincent?
claire/charlie...that was just wierd and felt a tad forced.
why the hell didn't charlie say anything! argh....
ok i'm done...for now.
thank you,

My thoughts on Penny Widmore -- in reference to her comments about being able to find anyone, anywhere with enough money -- Desmond has been on the island for three years, plus whatever time he has been travelling around in his boat before that. Maybe Penny was tracking him all along, and then lost his signal when he arrived at the island three years ago. Since she has so much money, she has spent the last three years scouring the globe searching for him, but has not been able to find him ANYWHERE, even with her vast amount of resources. If she knows about her father's connection to Dharma and Hanso, she might deduce that Desmond MUST be somewhere beyond her detection, so instead of searching for Desmond himself, she has chosen to set up stations to search for anything abnormal that happens in the world, in the hopes this will lead her to him.

Maybe the first time they detected the abnormality coincided with Desmond's disappearance from the face of the earth, so she has been watching for another abnormality to determine his last location. Any thoughts?

I also agree with the person who said that Eko and Locke are still alive. The blast doors are clearly there to protect those inside from the electromagnetic "explosion" that occurs if the numbers are not entered. I think it was a great idea for the writers to eliminate the need for the button, the computer, and the hatch. It will help to develop the story of who the others are if we don't have to worry about what happens if they don't push the button.

Can't wait for season 3...

#82. Posted by: stocky at May 25, 2006 5:37 PM

To those who are wondering if Kelvin is really dead, I think he is. Des eventually had to go back to get his boat and would have noticed if the corpse were missing.

And good god, I just discovered this website and those awesome reviews from MAC, its like I missed a part of Lost by not knowing of this greatness all this time. Better late than never I guess :o

#83. Posted by: axbob at May 25, 2006 5:38 PM

To icebergSlim...

Tom/Zeke said on the boat dock, "We got more than we bargained for with Walt."

I think Walt probably made their lives hell, and they are happy to see him go...

or not. it could all be a big trick.

#84. Posted by: Amanda at May 25, 2006 5:39 PM

Um, no mention of Rousso's daughter feeling up kate on the ferry dock at the end.

When they are all on their knees and the others go to help them up and move them, or whatever it is they're doing. Rousso's daughter is behind Kate, puts her arms under Kate's, grabs both boobs and then helps her up. It's very obvious! honk honk, oops let me help you up.

Mac, great review, I can't wait til winter...did I just say that?

#85. Posted by: DizzyG at May 25, 2006 5:50 PM

FHG said that Walt was "more than we bargained for." This implied to me that they had more trouble with Walt than it was worth, so they were glad to be getting rid of him.

I don't know about the Jack/Kate plan, but I also thought that maybe it was showing their affection for one another and Sawyer looked at them sad/mad that Kate wasn't all into him.

Finally, FHG said that he wasn't happy when he learned of the deal, making it sound like he's the man in charge (that and the way he took over the exchange and was getting on Tom/Zeke about not wearing the beard.)

(And I agree that the Desmond book scene must have been a few days later after he had enough...)

#86. Posted by: leila at May 25, 2006 5:55 PM

When FHG said that Walt was "more than we bargained for," I thought it implied that Walt's powers were stronger than the others had anticipated, and, perhaps, they couldn't control him the way they wanted/needed to.

in regard to the four toes on the statue foot and Buddhism, yes, there are four noble truths in buddhism

they are:

Four Noble Truths
1. Suffering exists
2. Suffering arises from attachment to desires
3. Suffering ceases when attachment to desire ceases
4. Freedom from suffering is possible by practicing the Eightfold Path

And the Eightfold path deal with mediation, right thinking, etc.

#90. Posted by: Amanda at May 25, 2006 6:25 PM

The four-toed foot seen by Jin, Sun, and Sayid is probably that of Anubis. In Egyptian history, Anubis ruled the underworld. ?????

#91. Posted by: maxlife at May 25, 2006 6:53 PM

A few things I noticed:
1. When we cut to the two Portuguese guys, there's a blizzard going on outside their window. I immediately thought "North Pole", then remembered Desmond's line about being "in a snowglobe".
2. When Charlie gets back to camp and sits down next to Claire, he says "Aren't they (Locke and Eko) back yet?", as if they were on a picnic and just happened to leave a few moments before Charlie. His whole demeanor was very odd, certainly not in keeping with someone who just survived the fireball and who had to have been awfully close the the source of the blinding white light. Plus, I would think that losing or damaging one's hearing would be quite upsetting (and not just a minor annoyance, which is how Charlie was acting), especially to a musician.
My favorite line was when Eko boots Locke out of the hatch and Locke says something about "doing it (or not doing it) so they'll be free". Then Eko says "Now you are free. Do not come back." That cracked me up. Love Eko's accent and diction.

Mac, I have to add my thanks and praise to the huge heap you have already. I love reading your summaries ... it's the highlight of my Thursdays!

Great recap Mac! Very well done. You helped explain so much that just flew by me last night.

I have one question though, I posted a comment earlier today and it was removed. I know the reasons for removal but I can't figure out why it was taken off? Was it because I said I was addicted to your site and that I might need an intervention?

You are the best! Look forward to next season.

#94. Posted by: tiny at May 25, 2006 7:36 PM

Gotta say I loved the final. And it was great to have Clancy Brown on the show again (The man who played Inman), for all us Carnivale fans. If you haven't seen Carnivale yet, I suggest you buy/download the series as fast as humanly possible, it is perhaps the greatest series ever written, and you've gotta have something to watch until the next season of lost, right?

Ok enough of my ravings about Carnivale. Just thought I'd point out one litle plot point you missed, Mac. It might be nothing, but I think we all know that's not true;-) In one of Desmonds flashbacks from the golden days in the hatch, he watches the Orientation film. Realizing that the film is not complete he asks Inman: "Why are there missing parts?", and Inman replies: "Radzinsky made some edits". Why would he do that? And what did he take away? I believe we haven't seen the last of the hatch-riddle, yet..

#95. Posted by: Gulbrand at May 25, 2006 7:40 PM

Tiny -- I can guarantee your post wasn't removed for any violation or problem. I screwed up the first post of this review and I had to delete the old version, which wiped out a few comments. So my apologies for that! -- Mac

#96. Posted by: mac at May 25, 2006 7:45 PM

Thanks for the fast response Mac! As always, you rock! I know you have heard this a million times, but we all greatly appreciate the time you put into doing this. Of all of the blogs I have read on Lost, your's completely outshines the others. Absolutely no comparison. Have a great summer.

#97. Posted by: tiny at May 25, 2006 7:55 PM

Gulbrand,

The 'missing pieces' Desmond refers to are the ones that Locke eventually spliced into the copy from the film Eko found. I think we've seen the complete film for Swan at this point.

There is much speculation about people being dead in the hatch. Assuming they were not killed by explosions or flying silverware, I've never heard of someone dying from excessive magnetism... is such a thing even possible?

There is still an issue though, if you think about it. Ok, the incident occurs, and now you must push the button every 108 minutes. BUT! There is this switch you can turn, and it will shut the whole thing down.

WHY NOT JUST SHUT IT DOWN???? Not the people pushing the (former) button. I would think Dharma itself would shut the thing down, just to avoid all the trouble it causes. Why keep it going?

I know, I know, to make a fun season. :)

#98. Posted by: The Duf at May 25, 2006 8:02 PM

What if Penny got her dad to confess to what happened to Desmond, or said something like "he just pushing a button on an island somewhere." Or she may have been snooping through her dad's thing and found information about an "electic anomaly" or whatever the technical term that Kelvin told Desmond about.

Would Kelvin had needed to cause an "accident" to get the boat to come to the island, was it planned by someone, or did he just happen to land on this island after he got knocked during a storm in the middle of sea?

Maybe Alex (I think that was her name) told Kate and Jack something while they were walking to the pier? Remember Alex talked to Michael when they were alone. Maybe Claire told Kate about the girl that helped her in the medical hatch, and then Kate told Jack?

Or jack was nodding and winking to Sawyer that Alex was "fond" of Kate and was about to grab her boobs? Thats what I would have done! Alex is my hero...

#99. Posted by: MattR at May 25, 2006 8:08 PM

Duf. I agree with you on just turning it off.

On a similar note - If it is that important to release the magnetism(sp?) every 108 min. why wouldn't they make sure they had someone to push the button or update the system to do it automatically. Or maybe it was just a big show and really didn't mean anything? Disney can probably put on a display like that, why not Dharma?

#100. Posted by: MattR at May 25, 2006 8:13 PM

what about the animals appearing on the island? First a polar bear, a horse and now a bird. are these connected to the OTHERS?

#101. Posted by: zammer at May 25, 2006 8:56 PM

Great job Mac, I'm pretty new to the site, maybe the last four episodes, but I wouldn't go anywhere else to get Lost recaps and for you to post all of that info in less than 24 hrs, you must have super Walt powers.

I think Libby's death had something to do with the "hostiles" not taking Hurley.

And if the hostile others are the "good guys" who are the bad guys? Who shoots and tortures each other? Who, I can't think of anyone?

And Charlie must be a clone or something, because the real Charlie would be blown out of his mind on Smack.

#102. Posted by: Rick Bruner at May 25, 2006 8:56 PM

If you Google Hanso you'll get a couple of wikipedia sites. On there they have bios of ALL the characters. Libby's bio alludes to her dead husband being Hurley's invisible friend. I like the idea that she is stalking hin for revenge. Doesn't seem like she needed the money if she gave a boat to Desmond.

What if Penelope put some sort of tracking device in Desmond's book and the only time the tracking device was visible to the outside world was when the eletromagnet went crazy??? That could explain why the guys in the snow suits have only seen it twice. Maybe??

#103. Posted by: Janie at May 25, 2006 8:59 PM

oh yea....forgot.....the bio for Vincent says he shows up right before something bad is about to happen. Never noticed that before.

#104. Posted by: Janie at May 25, 2006 9:02 PM

So if Libby was stalking Hurley to kill him, Michael actually did Hurley a favor by whacking her.

#106. Posted by: D at May 25, 2006 9:28 PM

Did anyone else notice that the whispers in the jungle said "Libby" and "Elizabeth"?

I think Libby was deliberately planted by Mr. Widmore to get that boat to Desmond so he would land on the island. Also, wasn't it determined somewhere that Libby's last name was Widmore also?

Thoughts?

#108. Posted by: D at May 25, 2006 9:29 PM

One question that still bugs me, and hasn't been answered (As well as that damn monster!) is what's the deal with the two skeletons the Tallies found when they discovered the caves?

Seems like it should be pretty significant to me.

Any thoughts or theories?

P.S: Mac, superb job. I trust you'll be keeping us posted over the summer of any Lost gossip and rumours.

P.P.S: Loved the reference to Walt being 22 and 6ft.

#109. Posted by: Schmoking_D at May 25, 2006 9:35 PM

Back to the wikipedia thing....if you read Sawyer's bio it has a list of all the nicknames he calls people...pretty funny.

#110. Posted by: Janie at May 25, 2006 9:45 PM

Mac,
Thanks for the summaries, its what keeps me coming back evey week.
Comments:
1) When Desmond wakes up in the Dharma hatch after storm, Kelvin's first question was "Are you the one" This was the same question Desmond asks Locke at the beginning of season 2. When Locke says "yes", Desmond asks the snowman joke. Obviously, there is something to this

2)Don't you think its odd that Desmond was clearly happy/relieved to see someone pounding on the hatch (Locke) saving him from suicide but yet earlier in the season was clearly hostile when Kate, Locke and Jack all descended into the hatch. If he was happy to know somebody was outside, why didn't he just go out the front door and find them instead of hanging around in the hatch?

3) By seeing the rip in Kelvin's biohazard suit and following him out the hatch, Desmond learns there is no virus or diseases. This was merly done by Kelvin to keep him in the hatch while he rebuilt the boat. As such, why does he ask Locke if any of the surviors have become sick? In addition, why does he grab some vaccaine when he split the hatch earlier in the season, he knows it doesn't work.

4) If Desmond had about two weeks to leave the hatch, prepare his boat, try to sail to Fiji and utterly fail only to return for the funeral, why do we think Micheal and Walt will be able to?

All this means to me is that Desmond will continue to figure into Season 3 with more flashbacks to conversations with Kelvin as we learn about the Dharma Initiative.

#111. Posted by: Eskimo at May 25, 2006 9:53 PM

Schmoking_D
I figure the skeletons are the De Groots, they were originally apart of the initiave then for some reason became unhappy with the project and started a counter group which became the 'Hostiles' and for some reason died ending up the 'Adam' and 'Eve' of the caves.
Whaddya think?

#112. Posted by: Joss at May 25, 2006 10:12 PM

Mac, YOU ARE THE GREATEST! I enjoy your commentary and recap every week. I have an idea: if you're bored over the summer, why not compile a big list of all the things we are still questioning, all the wierd connections, etc? ;-)

a. I dont understand why everyone assumes that Penelope being called has anything to do with a search for Desmond. Maybe it just has something to do with her line of work, but will eventually bring her to Desmond?

b. I'm hoping that Sayid somehow witnessed the happenings on the pier/dock (how far from the "camp" is it?) so that he can maybe keep an eye on things while Jack, Kate, and Sawyer are with the Others.

c. Where the hell is Rousseau?

d. Charlie is odd. He acted about as annoying and unhelpful regarding the hatch explosion. However, if he asked, "Oh, Locke and Eko arent here yet?" (or whatever he said), does it mean that he knows they are out? Or was he just being a jackass? (I'm pretty sure the show would go downhill if you get rid of Locke, Eko, AND Desmond, so they must be somewhere, right?)

I am so confused. Maybe if I dont get a job this summer (ugh) I'll read back through these and compile my own list of questions, connections, oddities, etc.

Can't wait til October guys!

#113. Posted by: HurleyIsHot at May 25, 2006 10:57 PM

Why do you think the 2 guys at the end were Portuguese? I assumed they were Icelandic (actually I first thought it was a beer commercial and was going to turn off the TV!), it may also connect to the polar bear from season one. maybe when the system fails (causing the plane to crash) it also allows the space/time continuum to fold, and hence polar bears can find their way to a tropical island.

Also, the job postings on Hanso/careers had a job in Iceland, another for a korean translater (Sun?) and a few other interesting jobs. Maybe some of the Losties are "employees" who recruit unknowing test subjects (Libby/Hurley, Libby/Desmond, Sun/Jin).

I think the 'incident' that is referred to in the Swan film is what brought Rousseau to the island (maybe that flashback will be explored in season3 ). I definitely think that the "him" the Others refer to is Penelope's father. And wasn't Penelope from greek mytholody, she waited 20 years for Odysseus to return home?

#114. Posted by: Lost freak at May 25, 2006 11:01 PM

Something I don't think anyone has floated yet...but could this island with it's odd 4-toed statue foot be what's left of the lost continent of Atlantis? I would never have speculated that but the foot put it in my mind...

#115. Posted by: Brandonious at May 25, 2006 11:04 PM

This is just a wacky out there idea, but I'll run with it. Please let me know what you think/debunk me/or call me Sawyeresque nicknames for my stupidity.

So far, people have been pushing the stretch between Hanso employee Liddy and 'tailie' Libby. If we hold this stretch and the mild name changes to be true, could Penelope be Persephone?

Putting all the Lost Experience interactive clues with the show, this could explain a lot of things. If Penelope's father did have a direct involvement in Desmond's 'disappearance', and Penny found out about it, she could be doing all she can to undermine her father's company and start an underground movement against Hanso and/or Widmore and any of their associates to find the love of her life.

She did say that anyone can be found when you've got money. I believe the two men speaking Portuguese in the middle of an arctic-like snow storm were in Iceland, given the timely spot during the showing of the season finale of the Hanso Careers website clearly listing a position in the arctic. Perhaps Penny paid these gentlemen to monitor for any unusual activity (or whatever, my creativity is waning) in addition to their Hanso jobs.

And something definitely happened in that hatch. Charlie isn't Charlie... at least not the Charlie we know (knew?).

I mean, I'm not sure of the medical/scientific findings on magnetic therapy and its healing properties, but some people swear by it. As for too much magnetic energy... who knows how it could mess with people and screw them up? Perhaps that's what happened during the 'incident'?

#116. Posted by: illusivemuse at May 25, 2006 11:32 PM

To touch on a couple points.

~ Desmond calling Locke "Box-man." It is indeed, BOX, not boss. A reference to Locke's job pre-island of infinite confusion. Desmond knows this tidbit about Locke because Locke told him. Remember the conversation between the two the first time Locke calmly took off his shoes and said hello to the crazy-eyed Scot with a rifle?

~ Regarding Penelope's phone call notice of another event. First, she may or may not be looking for Des in connection with largescale em events. Assuming she is, refer to her line "When you have enough money and determination, you can find anybody." This implies she has enough connections with persons or agencies specializing in surveillance and that these people can be bought.
Not a great leap of logic to assume that she was tracking Des on his oceanic trip and that his dissappearance/assumed death occured at the same time as another largescale em event. Perhaps the storm was generated by one. Once her sources confirmed all this, easy enough to find a couple guys willing to live in an icecube staring at a screen for anough cash. Remember Kelvin's description of the em generator. "Unique." After identifying a one of a kind signal, you know what to look for, just have to sit and wait for another.

~ Some above asked what could make the quarantine door fly 2 miles in the air with no large explosion. Think of how magnets repel when both have the same charge. Seems likely that the door, along with everything else getting pulled toward the magnet, took on one charge, the magnet suddenly reverses charges (again, unique), causing everything it just attracted to repel. Apparently at a high rate of speed.
~ Last mention, someone above this post noted that what the hell were the blast doors for if not to protect from another "incident?" I suspect that Eko, Locke, and Des are fine.

Thanks to anyone patient enough to read all this babble, I'm off to watch this episode again.

Great job on this blog, Mac. I only found it a couple months ago, but have loved every word of it, so thank you for all your work put into this.

The trapped in a snowglobe line reminded me of an old episode of Friday the 13th the series. The investigators/antique shop people get trapped in one of the cursed artifacts. A snowglobe that contains a pocket dimension with people living in a small town. Wont spoil it but they use a pretty cool means to escape.

#119. Posted by: John at May 26, 2006 12:34 AM

So if the giant electromagnet is destroyed/defunct does that mean the miraculous benefits bestowed on some of the Losties will no longer be? Locke will be back in the wheelchair, Rose will be sick again, Jin with no swimmers.....

#120. Posted by: Joss at May 26, 2006 12:58 AM

The gal that gave Des the boat was Libby? I thought she looked familiar!

See? That's exactly why I need this blog. I swear I have some kind of brain damage that makes it impossible to recognize faces. Help with the nuances and mysteries of the storylines is appreciated, but I need this site just to figure out who is popping up in the backstories. (To be honest, I didn't recognize Des until he started talking either.)

(Yeah, my friends wax their eyebrows or use a new lipshade and I don't recognized them either.)

Can't wait till next season!

My Thursday monring routine....wake up, change my son's diaper, make him breakfast, grab a cup of coffee and turn on the computer and wait for Mac's review to post. Now what's a girl to do?

Great Review Mac. Thursday monrings won't be the same without you.

Moving on...

Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje and Terry O'Quinn are outstanding on the show. The Eko/Locke relationship has more relevance now more than ever. I REALLY REALLY hope they come back next season.

I thought the Jack/Kate blink exchange went something like this....Jack "I'm Sorry" Kate "It's ok" Are the Others going to play mind games with this love triangle and pit them agaisnt one another?

sceaming now...I LOVE THIS SHOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

#123. Posted by: Kimberly at May 26, 2006 1:30 AM

Of the many things going on that we have yet to understand, one thing is really bothering me -- if the "Others" are supposed to be good, as "Henry Gale" says, why would they have to resort to so much subterfuge? Why not just explain to these people (the survivors of 815, Desmond, Rousseau, etc...) that they are trying to undo the wrongs that have been done on the island, or by the Hanso Foundation, or by whoever is actually running the Dharma Initiative? It's painfully obvious that Jack and the rest of the survivor have no idea what the hell is going on, or what they've stubled into. Why threaten them, and tell them there's a line not to be crossed? Why build a fake camp if no one even knows it's there? Why kidnap people instead of just explaining to them what's going on and asking them to join them (I understand this one may be a little more involved if the "others" are determining that there are "good" people and "bad" people among the survivors)? I guess these are all questions that will hopefully be answered through Season 3.

As for Walt and Michael, I do think we've seen the last of them. They can't keep Walt in the storyline due to the Malcolm's growth spurt, and I don't think there's much more they can do with Michael's character. He pretty much came full circle if you ask me. Everything we've seen about him has revolved around one thing -- trying to get his son back in his life. First Walt was kept from him by his mother. Then by the fact that Walt didn't want a relationship with the father who abandoned him. These were reconciled in season 1. Then Walt was again taken away, by the others this time. Only this time the bond between the two was unbreakable, and they BOTH wanted to be together. So Michael does what he feels he has to to get Walt back. Now he's got him back, but he can't stay on the island because of what he had to do to get his son back. So they have no choice but to leave, whether they want to or not. As someone else wrote earlier, at least the writers found a way to get someone off the island without killing them. Of course, I could be completely wrong, and maybe Henry Gale isn't letting them leave at all, since we still don't know the extent of Walt's powers. Maybe they actually want to keep him around, and maybe they will want Michael to be forced to stay on the island to face what he's done to his "friends." Again, I guess we'll find out in Season 3.

As for the four-toed foot, well, I think that this will be something we will be questioning for a while, without getting any answers. How many answers have we received about the Black Rock? None really, other than the indication on the hatch map that it is the final resting place of Magnus Hanso. I'm not all that intrigued by that foot at this point, or by the window-frame rock formation for that matter.

One more thought -- Desmond clearly stated the date the plane crashed as Sept 22, 2004. Now, in Lost-time, our survivors have only been on the island for roughly 65-70 days. Which puts the real-life timeline for them (disregarding any time-travel theories for the time being) at around late November or early December in 2004. Now if this is the case, why do the dates on the documents on the Hanso Foundation website have 2005 (letter about Joop) and 2006 (letters of communication between DaimlerChrysler and the Hanso Foundation) on them? Either this is the first instance I've seen of a continuity mistake with regards to the whole Lost universe, or the events that we are seeing on the show actually happened in what is now the past. But that would mean that Hanso is still around in the present. If that's the case, I don't think the futures of anyone on that island are going to end well.....

Hi everyone,
I have been reading Mac's comments as well as all of yours for quite some time now and it has done nothing but enhance my LOST experience. I am consistently impressed with the level of intelligence and the plethora of knowledge that is presented on this site. Mac is certainly deserved of the praise he has been receiving but thanks should most definately be extended to all of you who contribute to the ongoing LOST discussion as well. So from one LOST devotee to another, thank you!

first time poster:
Did Desmond ever have contact with the rest of the castaways? I ask because: wouldn't Libby and Desmond have recognized each other?

Also, a suggestion for all those reading/posting, when hailing mac and his efforts: how about just typing the word "kudos" and then move on directly to the comments/observations. not that mac doesn't deserve all the compliments, but it would make reading easier, quicker.

Mac I stumbled on this site at the begining of the second season, I can't tell you what an important part of this show you have become. I feel like a detective now trying to figure out as many clues as I can. Your site has become a validation for me! Thank you.

I knew before Libby said it that her husband's name was going to be Dave.

I have a problem with the fact that "FHG" seems to know the secret way off the island and into safety/reality/rescue. All you have to do is stay on course at 395. If he knows the way off why is he still there? Something tells me that we may be seeing Michael and Walt again. Even being 22yrs old and now out of character, he seems to be a tie.

Sayid has to be waiting to save the day , because what will the losties do without John, Eko, Jack, Kate and sawyer. Too many lead roles just disapeared from camp.

Enough of my ramblings, Thank you for everything!!

Dammit Mac, you sucked me in with this whole blgging thing... interactive journalism really is real!! Anyways, I can't believe I just read all that, but I'm sucked in now. My thoughts:

I didn't lose the "snowglobe" imagery at the end, very slick, and like LostFreak mentioned, it explains the polar bear-esque creature from season 1.

I could be crazy, but I swear when the boat first pulls up to the dock there is someone in the boat with his head down that you cant really see. His hair seems too long to be Henry. You only see hm for like 10 frames, but on first blush, I swore it was the asian dude from the orientation videos... i know i know, those are from 1980 but 25 years isnt THAT long... anyways, first impressions are usually right.

Finally, I too saw the infamous "Feel-up" of Freckles. I thought I was just being a perv (I love Freckles), but it did happen, and this show is too well produced for it to have just been a mistake that they didn't/couldn't re-shoot. Maybe Alex slipped her something... a blade or note or god knows what? And maybe Jack saw that or knew it was coming somehow, and thats why the exchanged knowing glances at the end???

It's either that, or Jack is giving kate a "did she just feel you up, and did you like it" kind of nod, and shes responding in the affirmatve, and Cowboy Sawyer just couldnt beleve it??

Finally, after seeing the 4 toed statue... it's totally atlantis.

I gotta go to bed. Check you later Mac...

Mac,

Great job but I need to clarify something everyone else has missed.

Your references to Des's "mullet" are a little off base. Long, dirty ass, wirey, curly hair doesn't necessarily mean it's a mullet. Correct terminology for the mullet would be a "short long". You know, all business in the front, with a party in the back! =)

Desmond never really had a mullet.

But on the hot topic. In the first season for the first 4/5 episodes, Sawyer actually did have a partial mullet. He must have uncovered, through his pillaging sprees, some of that good Old Dharma Rapid Hair Growth solution! Cause bot 5 days on the island and his mullet turn to long flowing golden lockes!

Anyways!

Cheers to beers!

don't think sayid saw the pier incident: you could see him on the boat with sun & jin, all of them holding their ears as the swan exploded/imploded/magnetisithingyed

btw, wasn't pen's dad played by "jim robinson" from ther aussie soap neighbours? i think in the US he was "24"

i am a newbie to the site-- amazing stuff mac! kudos!

here's a thought: charlie seems weird at the end; makes strange comment about "aren't eko and locke back yet?" as if nothing happened and then the oddly abrupt reunion with claire. perhaps charlie's experience is a reflection of what is happening with des. i mean, both charlie and des are trying to regain lost honor and in penny's letter she says you are saved by the love of one person. charlie walks away from the hatch unscathed, back to his love who seems to have forgiven his past actions. perhaps the writers are alluding to des and his search for honor.

on a more basic note-- des and charlie both have had the vaccine. maybe this will be important later?

#135. Posted by: va at May 26, 2006 7:00 AM

one other thing-- probably obvious but, when desmond meets libby she is wearing a wig (or am i wrong about that?) which makes their meeting different than the other character backstory connections. makes it seem like her boat offer is a set up (by daddy widmore?) not a coincidence.

#136. Posted by: va at May 26, 2006 7:10 AM

When Pennelope answered the phone, the Portuguese man called her Miss Widemore. That would imply that she DIDN'T get married. And would add to the speculation that she is tracking down Desmond.

#137. Posted by: DW at May 26, 2006 7:37 AM

Thanks a lot for all your great recaps, mac. Most of them were a lot better than the series itself.

It's sad that the Lost writers couldn't even keep the storyline consistent and plausible for two seasons. Anyways, a lot of episodes have been fun, but the end of season 2 is the line I won't cross.

See ya in another life, mac (or somewhere else on foddernetwork).

#138. Posted by: Margot at May 26, 2006 8:08 AM

The reason Desmond kept coming back to the island is simple. If there is a powerful magnetic source on the island, the compass will always point towards to the island as this magnetic force is obviously stronger than the magnetic pole source. Using this logic, Michael and Walt will not be able to flee since their course will lead them back towards the island and the magnetic source.

#139. Posted by: Vincent Manetta at May 26, 2006 9:05 AM

Some posters have said why didn't they just use the key and turn the whole thing off?? Well, didn't Kelvin say "there was a leak" and "do you have the courage to take your finger out of the dam, and blow the whole dam up?" To me that implies by pushing the button, they are plugging a leak in the dam with a finger. And the only way out, if their finger is getting tired, is to just blow the whole damn dam up. True, but doesn't that mean that everything the dam has been holding back will now be released? And potentially cause massive damage to anything/everything in it's path? And what exactly does turning the key do -- explosion? cut off power? shut down the hatch plug/bandaid on the dam? released a geologically massive magnetic flow? So Desmond saves the Losties by shutting everything down, but at what cost?

Lastly, FHG knows so much it seems. He knows how to get off the island (or so it seems, as he gave Michael instructions). He know how to push the button in the hatch, and more! When Locke was trapped under the door, not only did FHG stop the countdown and reset the clock, but he made those weird black lights come on. So, does FHG know about the shutdown key? Did he know what the blinding, humming light meant?

So many questions...

>is libby a real nickname for elizabeth?

-- Posted by: Bas at May 25, 2006 03:57 PM

Yes, as our state's Senator Elizabeth (Libby) Dole could tell you.

>And with that, Locke recaps his recent trip into the Pearl hatch. He lays the whole thing out for Desmond: the notebooks, the vacuum tubes, the TV monitoring stations ... everything.

Mac,

*Vacuum* tubes are an obsolete radio/TV/computer technology.

Those things are *pneumatic* tubes, and used to be common in department stores, and still are used around here in drive-up bank and pharmacy applications, to allow one teller/pharmacist to service multiple lanes.

#142. Posted by: Cecil Rose at May 26, 2006 9:28 AM

Hey, Kara, you asked why didn't Libby and Desmond recognize each other on the island? They never met on the island. Desmond ran away from the hatch to his boat, and Libby wasn't in the camp with the other lostaways when that happened. Then Libby gets shot by Michael and is 6 feet under when Desmond comes back to the island. Neither of them knew the other was on the island.

Wasn't Dave from Hurley's flashback an "imaginary friend"? I ask because that was the only show this season that I missed (but I did read Mac's recap), and I assumed he was a figment of Hurley's imagination. Anyway, if Dave isn't real, then that leads me to believe one of two things: Libby was never married to someone named David. She just chose that name because she knew it was Hurley's imaginary friend. Or she's married to some other bloke named David and there is no connection to Hurley. Either way, I think it points to Libby's craziness. Dead husband or no, what person gives a sailing yacht to a perfect stranger five minutes after meeting him? WACK-O!

When Kate, Jack, Sawyer, Hurley and Michael hear the voices whispering in the jungle, I clearly heard the words "Elizabeth" and "Wickmund." Couldn't pick out anything else very well.

I taped the show and will watch it again very soon. I missed a lot of dialogue because things were moving so fast and furious.

Oh, and to Eskimo, I completely agree with you! I was just saying to my husband last night your point about how it seems odd that Desmond was hostile to Kate, Locke and Jack when they first enter the hatch. Wouldn't he have welcomed them with open arms? Seems like a continuity issue to me...

Same with your point about the medicine. If he thought it didn't work, and knew Kelvin lied about the sickness, then why did he grab a bunch of vaccine before bolting into the jungle? It doesn't jive with what we learn in the finale...

When do you think Kelvin figured out the virus was fake? And was Radzinski a real person? And why would they need to paint an invisible/glow-in-the-dark map on the wall? No one else ever came down there that we know of. And they supposedly didn't know they were being observed (or DID they?), so why the secrecy? I think Radzinski was not real, and the whole map thing was just a mind game perpetrated on poor Desmond...

that's all for now. I have to get back to work before I get fired....

#143. Posted by: Amanda at May 26, 2006 9:38 AM

The purpose of the map may be for use by the people left in the hatch after the key is turned. With the blast doors down and the rest of the hatch destroyed, Locke will have plenty of time to study it this time around.

#144. Posted by: DW at May 26, 2006 9:55 AM

My question is: how can Penny know that the Desmond was on the island? I mean, he just disappeared on his boat. And the guys at the end said "we found IT" meaning they were looking for a thing, not a person.

My personal theory is that she was looking for the island and Des just HAPPENED to be on the island as a coincidence. Why she's looking for the island, I still don't know, but I honestly don't think it has anything to do with Desmond. It may have something to do with her father instead. Maybe she's trying to subvert her father's efforts or something? I dunno, but I don't think it had anything to do with finding Desmond.

#145. Posted by: Paul at May 26, 2006 9:56 AM

Wow, that took me about two hours to read!!
First of all, I want to bring attention to the obvious relationship among these events: The riddle about what did one snowman say to the other? The two men at the end of the episode in the snowstorm. Being caught in a snow-globe. The polar bear.

Secondly, how long was Desmond gone altogether? he made reference to being gone two weeks. Does this mean that two weeks ago he left the hatch? The season was longer than that in days, wasn't it? Where was he the rest of the time?

Thirdly, work? I've lost the greater part of the day on this site!

#146. Posted by: meg at May 26, 2006 10:02 AM

i think FHG told michael to keep compass
bearing 325 and he will be rescued.

if compass heading 0/360 is due north and
270 is due west, then 325 would north by
northwest? is this a hitchcockian reference
or am i drinking too much lost koolaid?

love your blog, mac.

#147. Posted by: zulu at May 26, 2006 10:22 AM

"I thought it was a BIG FAT CLUE as to where the island is if Desmond said:

1. He was traveling due west
2. He was traveling 9 knots an hour
3. He should have wound up in Fiji in less than a week."

Vikki, the best I can come up with is somewhere in the Cook Islands. 9knots x 24hrs x 7 days = 1512 nautical miles is the farthest out he should of been from Fiji. A line "due" west from Fiji puts you in the Cook Islands. Which is also about 1000 miles off course from the Sydney to LA flight path which I think is what the pilot said they were in Season 1. I was hoping to come up with some nice unhabited Island exactly on this course, but I didn't. Plus "due west" could mean a couple of things. Is it a Magnetic heading or a True heading? Depending on which one it's a difference of about 200 miles.

Two problems with the location being in the Cook Islands:

1. Desmond had alot of closer and better options than Fiji (if they are in the Cook Islands somewhere) when he was trying to escape the Island. If he knew where he was why wouldn't he have picked something closer?

2. A 325 heading from any of the suitable, uninhabited Cook Islands takes you no where. This is the course FHG sent Walt on.

Anyway, I'm done geeking out. If anyone sees a fault in my math please point it out. I'm sure the Lost writers put those vague hints in there as bait for some geek like me. Well I took it and wasted an hour of my morning.

Just had to post an "i told you so" about the button. Affirms me as an engineer.lol

First time Posting here. Avid watcher. Let me first say that I am an electrical engineer (so don't mind my physics explanations).

I know it has been brought up before about the whole magnetic phenomenon that is occuring. Most people know that magnets are worn by people to help with healing processes. There are also great theories about magnetic properties and there effect on the human body. Here is my take on the situation:

Though these magnetic properties are helping some, it will not stop people from dying or cure everyones problems. It can also create physical and mental problems. It will cause abnormal behavior as well as effect people in unknown ways (possibly the reason they are on the island). I believe it is a study, maybe it has gone wrong over the years.

As far as the button and magnetic relevencies;

The experiment may involve non-destructive, pulsed magnets, typically used in research.

The button they push may be some sort of capacitor discharge, releasing large amounts of energy into the surrounding areas. Too much stress on the magnet field will cause the magnet to explode.

I have no idea if I am remotely close to anything, but another theory can't hurt. Or I am just another fan caught in the writers amazing story line. Some thoughts?

If the compass is not working it doesn't matter his course, he'll end up back where he started as the magnetic field fluxes.

Locke and Eko are NOT dead! It is simple really, before desmond went down into the "fail-safe" thing he said to Locke "You saved my life, so i could save yours" meaning he obvisouly knew that he wouldn't die from what he was about to do. As for Eko he walked into the same room where Locke was and exchanged these words "I... I was wrong" Then Desmond might/might-not have sacraficed himself to the island. Remember Locke was talking about the island needed sacrafices after that Boone incident...
Also, i don't get how/why the two Portaguese men (yes, they are Portaguese) where in a blizzard area and the losties are on a bloody (yes, bloody) ISLAND... I would like to know if the men were on a boat? i couldn't tell...
Since i don't have "tivo" i can't rewind or nothing but if i could i would then i would slow down the last part and look for any DHARMA symbols!!! Can any1 do that real quick and answer back?!?!?! plz
also, i read some1's comment that maybe the island was a flash back and that there off island experiances were the future... intresting but impossible. How could people die in the past THEN have a future? It dunt make nune cent's... (no im not a red-neck but that was my sad impression of one) no pun intended

#153. Posted by: Chris at May 26, 2006 11:18 AM

Is that boat electro-magnetically powered? Does it run on mangoes? Where do they get the gasoline for that thing?
Maybe the hostiles can teach us a thing or two about oil substitutes.

LOL, MikeDee it sounds like a diesil engine when ever it is running... I wonder what the Others are gonna do with out a boat! maybe they have more but we don't know it... maybe gas too! What happens if Micheal runs out! Kate, Jack, Sawyer, Hugo must have been important to just give up a boat and WALT! But i wonder why they let hugo go
P.s. excuse my bad sentence writing sry

#155. Posted by: Chris at May 26, 2006 11:32 AM

Why r the Others called Hostiles? becuz Desmond called them that? Since when did we know he ever came in contact with them? Unless im missing sumthing... Maybe he is thinking of sum1 else that the Others got rid of... "Hostile" doesn't even make since they are the "good" people getting rid of the "bad" people.

#156. Posted by: Chris at May 26, 2006 11:40 AM

Diamondgirl; it was FHG who made a comment about Walt. He said " we got more than we bargained for with Walt". I take this to mean that whatever Walt's gift is it was something that the Others couldn't control, it was too powerful.

Also - I would like to add my 2 cents on the whole Bossman Box Man thingie. Desmond says "Box Man". He calls Locke "Box Man" because back in the beginning of the season Desmond and Locke are talking in the hatch, Desmond has his rifle trained on Locke and asks him all sorts of questions. Locke replied with "I work for a box company", hence when desmond next saw Locke in the finally he called him Box Man.

I apologize for taking up space with that last one if someone else had already replied.

Namaste & WGNABB

#161. Posted by: Chris at May 26, 2006 11:56 AM

meg -- nice put-together with all the snow references!

Also, regarding the Other's boat/gas thing -- they obviously can either come and go at will from the island (and get gas at some nearby land), or they have a little dharma village (DharmaTown) on the island. That could be why they absolutely don't want the losties exploring this end of the island. But, how would they get refills at the gas station, unless there's an underground pipe...

Must work now. Must work now...

Faux Henry does this:

Lie, lie, lie, lie, lie, lie, lie, lie, lie, LIE, LIE, LIE!!!!!!!!

So we establish that he is the lyingest liar that ever lied a lying lie! And then He says:

"...we live up to our word."

AND THEN HE DOES?!?!?!

Definitely a WTF moment...

I did not see any of the first season's episodes. Besides the entertainment value of a good program. Is there a value to watching them now to try and find clues for the future or are the season 2 plotlines relatively independent of each other. I di see the finale in season 1.

Lost Chao,
Good theory, mayb the "Dharma Co." funds it all and they get it resupplied (just like the food and medical stuff) Maybe they are stealing electricity too... (from unexplained that wire that goes into the ocean that Sayid found on his voyage to the french chicks place)... from Dharma town or like sum1 said mayb all there power is nuclear. Although i don't know much about that it sounds good to me and i know it is supposed to run forever and queitly but needs alot of maintence...
again sry for the piss-poor sentences

In reply to Chris' post:

""Hostile" doesn't even make sense since they are the "good" people getting rid of the "bad" people."

I think what you're asking is one of the questions/issues the writers are trying to get us to think about....good/bad can be all in the eye of the beholder, can't it? I think FHG's response to Michael asking "Who are you people?" to which FHG replies "We're the good ones" is rather interesting. What if next season's episodes are all from the perspective of the Others, and from the stories we're told, we begin to see that they ARE the good ones!?!! That would be really interesting to me. It might give the writers a dramatic outlet to discuss big social issues of our time...like prejudice and religious fanantics (who often make issues an us versus them...good vs evil issue).

Also...just as I'm typing this it reminded me of Sayid praying on the boat. Is this the first time they've shown that? Sort of interesting to put it in there.

I do agree though...there was something missing in the writing, or yet to be shown, about why Desmond believed the Others to be hostile. Did he personally have an experience with them we didn't/haven't yet seen...or did he just adopt that notion from Kelvin's stories? Another question left hanging out there!

Also...I agree with posters saying that the writers seem to put things into the show as a shout out to the boards. Sawyer's theorizing (aliens with prosthetic heads! ROFLMAO) was an excellent example of that. In Three Minutes I sooo thought that Charlie was going to say Hatchlorpad when he instead said "fancy yourself a bachelor pad" and THAT would have been the absolute best. There's been so many times where something comes up in the show that I think I saw on the boards first. OMG...are we in fact writing this show by writing on the boards???? Maybe they just throw all of our comments into a (ass)hat and pick them out to form the storyline. Seriously though...it's really fun to see the comments reflected in the writing.

I'm rambling....an entire summer to ponder all of this!

#166. Posted by: SthrnMstKGirl at May 26, 2006 12:19 PM

This is my first post but I have been reading your review since Adrift but went back and read the other ones. I have never missed a Lost episode once and never plan on it so I love your commentaries and look forwardto next season. It makes my Thursdays. My favorite line of the year was "And micheal used his new catchphrase - they took my son" also walt's whisper was "shannon you dirty whore" - or something like that.

So from what I understand "Henry" said "walt was more than they bargained for" leading me to think that he had been more trouble than anything else. Either trouble from Walt or from the castaways. Just a theory. Maybe they wanted to get rid of him. Also I am inclined to beleive that Kate knew what Jack knew about Micheal - given their relationship these days - and they have something up their sleaves. But we will find out more next year. And really how can Walt be "gone" when we still don't knwo what his powers were all about... I am sure we haven't heard the last of that.

#167. Posted by: Melissa at May 26, 2006 12:35 PM

Ok - four more comments...

1) jb - regarding your Cook Islands theory...I like it a lot and think that it is pretty sound, but my take has a slightly different twist. I belive that this island has it's own magnetic field and "Van Allen Belts". I'm not a physics professor, but if this were truly an island that had it's own magnetic force, it would explain why Desmond set out following a course of Due West and wound up back at the island. With this theory, if he tied the rudder off so he could sleep, when he woke up he would no longer be traveling West. If he just followed the compass on a Westerly course he would follow the Van Allen Belt back to the island. Similarly, if Michael and Walt set out on a course of 325, unless they find land soon they will also return to the island.

2) Lost freak - I really like your idea that the first "Incident" caused Rousseau's boat and crew to end up on the island. How long has she been on the island? 16 years? That would mean she crashed in 1988, but the incident was in 1980 according to the map on the hatch wall. Could there have been another incident?

3) The question about the cable Sayid and Hurley found has still not been answered. Maybe it leads to an island inhabited by the "Others/Hostiles"? The Pala Ferry dock was built so that boats could reach the island, so there has to be some land mass close by as we haven't seen a fuel depot on this island. We can reasonably assume that if a boat (other than a sailboat) reaches this island it has to return to where it came from, and if this island doesn't have any fuel then the other location must.

4) I really enjoy reading everyone's posts - keeps me from having to actually work!!!

What the hell am I going to do this summer?????

thought it was a BIG FAT CLUE as to where the island is if Desmond said:
1. He was traveling due west
2. He was traveling 9 knots an hour
3. He should have wound up in Fiji in less than a week.

*** Yes, the reason Des can't get anywhere, is that if the compass points north to the island and he sails west, he will be going in circles (he should have tried south :) - but who would want to go to the south pole?)

What's more important is that he THINKS he should hit Fiji going West. HE has some clue where he is, how? By the way, due East of FIJI and about the speed he would be traveling puts him just past French Polynesia. IT looks like a vast area, but a small island exists called "Pitcairn Island". It is a territory owned by the UK. Isn't the UK where Widmore is based out of? Hmmm. Maybe they OWN the island or a nearby island since its part of British territory. Its between French Polynesia and...ready for this...EASTER ISLAND! You know the Island with the freakin humongous STONE HEADS!

It looks like Michael is sick with some type of island disease. He has lesions on his face and hands and appears to be coughing in one scene.
Maybe he will die before he gets rescued.... Maybe the Others injected him with some disease so that even if he escapes the island with Walt, he will nevertheless die.

#170. Posted by: csr at May 26, 2006 1:03 PM

== FHG said to make for heading of 325, but he didn't say how long it would take. I'm guessing the boat is not provisioned for long trips, so rescue would have to occur within a couple of hours.
== When Locke saw the map, the blast door was not completely shut. Maybe there is pertinent information at the top of the map we have yet to see.
== Has anyone tried to decipher the hieroglyphics on the time?

#171. Posted by: maxlife at May 26, 2006 1:16 PM

I was REALLY, REALLY, REALLY surprised that the numbers FHG gave to Micheal (325) were NOT any of the original #'s (4,8,15,16,23,42)
This is intresting, but probally nothing 3+2=5... yeah probally nothing

Also, i thought it was really intresting that Kelvin was the guy who cut a deal with Sayid in the war. Maybe that means that one dude that was with Kelvin in the war was Radzinski!! Wasn't he talking to Desmond about Kelvin gave orders and his men followed them?... Like a leutinent would? Mayb Radzinske was sum officer under his command.
Also mayb he betrayed/treasoned with the army and that was "bad" so he was sent to the island to make up for his mistakes (like most of the losties they did sumthing "bad" in the past and are making up for it) examples are in no order
Kate-fugitive killed step father
Sawyer-Con artist
Jack-betrayed his father
Charlie-Drugs
Jin-Killed people for his wife's
dad's "buisness"
Sun-lied to Jin (was gonna walk out on
him)
Locke-Lied to his girlfriend (yeah not
good...
Hugo-used the numbers and he wasn't
supposed to and lied to his best
friend
Micheal-was a bad father
Walt-was a bad son
Desmond-did somthing bad in the army
(don't know what...yet)
Claire-was gonna give up her CHILD!
Bernard-eh forgot
Rose-lied to her husband
Eko-Drug dealer (i wonder if he delt to
Charlie) also bad priest
Libby-well, was crazy (maybe stalked
Hugo)
Boone-got caught in a net with his sis!
Shannon-got caught in a net with her
bro... eww
im probally forgeting quiete a few but u get my point...
theY are being watched by the others and that mysterious black smoke that eko looked into to see if they are willing to change... to a good person

PLEASE TELL ME IM NOT THE ONLY ONE TO NOTICE THIS!!!!!

#173. Posted by: maxlife at May 26, 2006 1:19 PM

jake 3842 great point about Desmond and his position. It doesn't matter that his compass doesn't work. What matters is where he thinks he is (due west of Fiji about 1500 miles).

I really liked your Pitcairn island idea. In fact when I first worked it out I was hoping that's where it would end up. Pitcairn Island is where Fletcher Christian went after the mutiny on the HMS Bounty. (Fletcher Christian was the lead muntineer). Unfortunately I don't think it makes sense. Pitcairn Island is 3000 miles from Fiji or about 2 weeks of sailing based on Desmond's speed. Cook Islands still seem to make the most sense.

First of all - Thanks Mac for the excellent and witty reviews. Loved the 22 and 6'-2" line - do you chuckle to yourself as you write these things? Because they are hilarious.

And also thank you to Lou for further insight on magnetism. If the button really does release some kind of magnetic pulse it would explain why some people are healed. It might also explain the "sickness" - people who have a negative reaction. I agree that Michael appears to have some kind of sores on his face and arms. Maybe that is why the Others took blood - if they are really studying the effects of magnetism then they would want to know why his body was reacting that way.

If the Others are not setting another trap and truly letting Walt and Michael go, then it really does bring home Mr. Beard's line "You are only living on this Island because we let you live on this island." There must be some reason that they want the Losties to live there. Otherwise, why wouldn't they just arrange for them to leave the island.

#175. Posted by: ac at May 26, 2006 1:32 PM

Thanks for the kind words, JB. I see your point on PitCairn being too far out. But is 9 knots what the speed would be for sure? Is that typical ocean + wind current for sailing in that area? Cooks Island seems too close to Fiji, but hey, it is an ocean. If I remember astronomy correctly, The human eye can only see about 2-3miles to horizon because of the curvature of the Earth. They could be really close (100mi) of another known island. Aloha!

#176. Posted by: jake3841 at May 26, 2006 1:48 PM

Mac--Thanks for mentioning me in your review! :)

Other thoughts: 4-toed statue and the other foot would make it 8 and the symmetrical hands 16 digits.

Eskimo--Desmond headed west (270), FHG told Michael to head at 325 a north by northwest heading, perhaps a known hole in the magnetic field.

Maybe Libby's David isn't dead but someone connected to Dharma? We still don't know why she was in Australia to begin with. Maybe turning the boat over to Desmond?

1700 miles due east of Fiji is Tahiti and French Polynesia.

A few thoughts:
Since they are not supposed to be able to lower the blast doors manually, could the key drop the doors before it sets off the blast?

Desmond had his book and an epirb (emergency position indicating radiobeacon - it was the orange thing) when he was on his boat in the storm.

Desmond was probably on an easterly course from Fiji when he hit the storm and therefore assumes that a westerly course will take him back.

The "Ferry" boat that Michael is using might meet up with another (dharma) vessel or barge that would have fuel for the ferry - not a land mass.

Could the power for the hatch system be harnessed from the electromagnetics and now they will be without power, hot water, etc?

#178. Posted by: howcurious at May 26, 2006 1:49 PM

jb, dknight, jake3841....thank you, thank you, thank you for your work and theories about the geography clues we may or may not have gotten in this episode...your calculations and theories are exactly what I was looking for when I threw that idea out there....I agree, it's the fact that Desmond thought he would wind up in Fiji that makes it important because it implies that he MIGHT know the location of the island to form that hypothesis....thanks guys, really!

Mr. Grimm...thanks for clearing up the "boss man/ box man" debate...I totally forgot about that conversation between Desmond and Locke from earlier in the season...

Why are there gigantic stone heads on Easter Island again? Is there any historical theories or information or lore that claims there is an island that only has feet, or are we just strecthing on that one???

Thank you to all who keep me coming back time and time and time again to this forum....it's nice to continually meet a challenge of the intellect!

#179. Posted by: Vikki at May 26, 2006 1:56 PM

One other thing....if Desmond's calculations were off because the magnetic pull of the island throws compasses off and we also theorize that Michael and Walt won't get far due to this pull also, then why doesn't a multitude of planes, boats, balloons, etc, (in other words, more than the six we have encountered so far in this series...they are 1. the black rock 2. Oceanic 815 3. Desmond's boat 4. the real HG's balloon 5. the food drop off balloon 6. Danielle's boat (even though we don't know if we have even seen this) ) continually go off course and also wind up on the island?

I hope that makes sense, because I would really be interested to hear what answers you might come up with...especially from those of you who have a better understanding of electromagnetism and geography...

Whoa just reallized sumthing! the finiale was episode 23! (remember 4,8,15,16,23,42) so does that mean 42 will be the number of episodes in next season or total?!?! or if the number of episodes are important example
4-every1 hates hugo
8-collision
15-Maturinty leave
16-the whole truth
23-Live together, die alone
i wonder if there is something VERY important in those episodes?!?!

#181. Posted by: Chris at May 26, 2006 2:07 PM

As far as Desmond thinking he would end up in Fiji, that mean he *knew* where he was in the first place. Since the pilot of Flight 815 was of course, its reasonable to assume that Desmond was of course, too. Which would mean that he could be anywhere in teh Pacific. There is a whole lot of open space on the southern Pacific.

Also, if he did know exactly where he was, and was in fact in near the Cook Islands or French Polynesia, wouldn't he have been better off just heading to Tahiti? Seems like that sail would ahve been a day or two at most.

Finally, I was most intrigued by the foot statue in this episode. The 4 toes is kinda freaky, but could tie in to another Island in the south Pacific, Easter Island, that is know to ahve some freakish statues...

Desmond started his journey on that boat 3 years ago. Libby was in Australia when until flight 815 took off. I doubt her stay in Aussie land had anything to do with the boat... I'm thinking it was Hurley motivated!

I just had to jump down and post this before i forgot.... I think the reason the hatch door was flying through the air was because of the dynamite blast. When the fireball exited up through the secondary hatch that Charlie was running towards, I think that is what sent the QUARANTINED stamped door up so high it took it a while to come crashing back down. We as viewers were seeing things from different points of view but i'll bet a lot of what happened did so in a short period of time. (The dynamite going off, then the magnet acting up, then the weird blinding lights in the sky and finally the hatch door falling back to earth.)

What would have been funny is if the falling door would have hit Michael in the head as he and Walt left the pier in their boat. Ha! Ha! It would have served him right!

Here's a cool little finding via google search, in regards to where the island could possbly be based on coordinates of 4 8 15 16 23 42.

However, if this were right, you'd have to question Arnst's theory as well as the speed of the Oceanic 815 flight.

Check it out...
http://tinyurl.com/ob8g3

Also, a side note. I figure every 108 minutes the electro magnetic charge builds, hence making it impossible for mike and walt to get out of there, as the compass will always lead them back as it did to des. But due to Desmond's shutting it down with the key, the charge stops right? so now they should have a working compass! either way, I am sure mike will be back at one point.

And as earlier mentioned, Libby was the only main character we do not know the reason for her being in austraila and on Oceanic flight 815. Now with the dead husband David / Hurley & Dave connection, I rally hope that leads somewhere. I want to know her story.

Still liked her better in Drew Carey.

Cheers,
Cid

Check out this link to magentics:
http://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/fs-0236-95/fs-236-95.pdf

The word anomaly strikes a chord.

I believe that magnetic force increases/decreases exponentially. This means that the further you are from the magnet, the forces power decreases quite rapidly. So flying airplanes and the like would not experience a big shift in any of their compasses, but a small boat within miles of the island could definitely be tricked into thinking north was always towards the island.

I just had a thought..
Won't Sayid, Jin and Sun see Michael and Walt getting away on the boat and do something about it? (They DO have guns) It seems to me that this might be the way that getting Sayid involved would allow them to foil Michael's plan..
Yeah, I think Sayid's gonna save the day.

#191. Posted by: Sabrina at May 26, 2006 5:15 PM

I just hope that Michael and his kid run into Sayid and Jin. Seriously...I think that Sayid is the only half sain one left on the island. If Michael kept saying, no its just got to be you me sawyer kate and hurley, well...how did he not catch onto that. I mean if he really wanted Walt back that much than he would have wanted as many people to come as he could get. SOOOOO GO SAYID!!

yes, that means FHG pushed otherwise Desmond would have seen it on that log of the accepted ones... unless FHG knew of somthing else he could do to stop it while NOBODY WAS WATCHING!

The statute with the one right foot was the writers subtle tribute to American Idol for continuing to top Lost in the ratings. American Idol winner Taylor Hicks has only four toes on his right foot.

#196. Posted by: Chris at May 26, 2006 8:03 PM

There is no way FHG and the Others are just gonna let Walt and Mikey go. Walt and Mikey are just gonna float back to the island like in that one Twilight Zone epi with Centerville. They just let Walt and Mikey go, have them float back to the merry ol' island and the Others are gonna have Jack, Kate, and Sawyer. It's a win-win pretty much. And I wonder if Radzinsky had a partner before Kelvin. Maybe it was Magnus Hanso? Or Reaussou?

I think maybe Alex is Persephone from the Lost game. 'Cause in Greek Mythology, Persephone (Alex) was taken to the Underworld (Other encampment) by Hades (Tom, or FHG) from her mother
, Demeter (Reassou).

Don't know if it is already posted but here's a few notes

- the statue is placed on the island Rhodos in the Middle Sea of Europe, and it was destroyed during an earthquake about 200 y.b.c

-as for widmore url:http://www.widmore.com
in bottom of the site you can see what the foundation is all about, and might be a connection to the Lost island.
Their type of research might be why "Pen" got called up by the two portuguese talking scientists.

I have a question:
Why were there two armed guards guarding the Dharma hatch in the Others camp if it was a fake door covering a rock wall? Was it for Michael's benefit, to make the camp look real? Or maybe that was not just a rock wall...

#199. Posted by: Christina at May 26, 2006 8:29 PM

The snowglobe reference made me think of the movie "The Truman Show". Somewhere above the 'island' there is a broadcasting booth with Dharma employees recording everything that goes on.

#200. Posted by: Christina at May 26, 2006 8:31 PM

I highly doubt that the writers would put a tribute to American Idol into a Lost episode, especially since they wouldn't even know who the AI contestants are when they wrote the Lost episode (depending how far in advance the ep's are written anyway). And besides, wasn't it a LEFT foot they saw on the Island, not a right?

I remember hearing many years ago that eventually the evolutionary process would result in human beings not having a little toe, as it is pretty much unnecessary and we don't need it (that's what I remember anyway -- I later remember hearing that our little toe does serve to aid us in our balance when walking and standing). If there are genetic experiments going on, maybe that's what the four-toed statue was meant to represent -- a superior genetic trait. Now, to counter that thought, one has to take note that the rest of the statue has been destroyed, maybe as a demonstration that genetic experimentation is not creating superior humans, and must end. Similar to the way that Saddam's statue was torn down to signify that the way of life under his rule was coming to an end. Maybe the statue was destroyed to send a message to Hanso and the Dharma Initiative...

Tom/Zeke looked alot like Bernard... Brother? Dad? mayb...?

Was it just me or was Charlie wearing a Led Zepplin shirt? maybe it has to do with all those wrecked ballons on the island or just the writers fav. band...

We should be more worryed about how that tear in the pantleg got there!

#202. Posted by: Chris at May 26, 2006 8:41 PM

C'mon, people, can't you recognize a joke when you hear one?
Of course it wasn't a statue of Taylor Hicks' foot, it was a JOKE.
(A pretty funny one, at that)
And I also don't think it's particularly relevant to us to discover how Kelvin tore his pants. It was only relevant in that it made Desmond brave enough to venture outside for the first time in three years.

i have been reading a lot of posts on the position of the island and theories about which island it is etc. just wanted to mention that i read somewhere and also saw pictures saying/ showing that the "numbers" are actually the geological position of the island. I am sorry but i don't remember exact details but there was also a map showing this position and it is somewhere between Australia and Hawaai. Just thought would throw that out there and if someone else already mentioned this, SORRY!

Okay - I've never posted, but I read this site all the time, becuase (unbelievably) I'm the only person I know who watches Lost and I need clarification occassionally. I'm so excited to finally have something to say! Re: The Hurley Bird: On the Lost podcast (which I think you can download from the ABC website or from iTunes), the producers and writers are always saying that one of the questions they are asked most frequently is why there are no birds on the island. Well, they've said that there's absolutely no connection between the show's plot and the fact that we haven't seen any birds. AND they're always joking about how we're going to see a bird one day that's a "Hurley bird." And then they chime in with choruses of "Hur-ley, Hur-ley, Hur-ley!" Also on the podcast, the producers mention "Easter eggs" - little bits like the Oceanic plane that was in the air behind Locke and his fiancee in a recent episode - that are there to make "true Lost fans" feel special. Shots like the one of Sawyer slamming into the Ana Lucia and Jack's dad's car door? Not an Easter egg. But I'd bet that the Hurley bird is. Even if it's not, it certainly make me chuckle. Again, thanks for the blog!

To address a few continuity errors/oversights/screw-ups on my part:

1. Thanks to all who noted that Desmond did not sit down at the hatch kitchen table directly after offing Kelvin. I really screwed the pooch on that one. Those responsible have been sacked and the mistake has been corrected.

2. Desmond did NOT take Widmore's offer.

3. Indeed, they are pneumatic tubes (I know this because I referred to them as pneumatic tubes in the "?" review, yet, amidst my "Lost" finale haze, I incorrectly labeled them as vacuum tubes; perhaps this was a Freudian reminder of a certain household chore I need to tend to?).

And thank you to all for so many kind words. I really appreciate all that (it completely makes my day).

In regards to the summer, I will be sure to post any news/tidibts or other "Lost" things that come across my radar. I'll also be setting up occasional blog posts so conversations can continue throughout the summer months.

Incidentally, if you run across relevant "Lost" stuff or have a topic you'd like to discuss, please drop me a line directly at mac@filmfodder.com and I'll whip up a post.

I love your reviews, you write them in such a funny way - very entertaining. Did anyone notice that when Libby is talking to Desmond in the coffee shop she says her husbands name is Dave and that is the name of Hurley's imaginary friend.

Also, the name on the structure built at the end of the dock is named the 'Pala Ferry'.

I can't wait until season 3 starts.

#209. Posted by: jj at May 27, 2006 2:21 AM

We should all write ABC to make sure Mac gets a bonus for all his heroic efforts, and for keeping us hooked when the show wasn't.

Cid and KatePlusSun commenting just earlier above make a stunning revelation, which hopefully I can clarify: the numbers, 4 8 15 16 23 42, must be the lat/lon geocode of the island's location. Latitude always precedes longitude. So, a latitude of 4.815 and longitude 162.342 lies in the Pacific ocean south of Fiji and Northwest of New Zealand. See MapQuest's "Map by lat/lon" feature to see for yourself. This could not be merely coincidental. The writers are brilliantly creating their own neo-classical mythology with an emphasis on fate. How else do you explain Hurley's lotto number matching the lat/lon of a mysterious island? This dark number is the very signature of the island itself. Fate connects Hurley to the island, just as fate connects everyone else. And, as mentioned, Desmond corresponds to Odysseus, and Penny to Penelope..fate separated them and will bring them together again. Logic says Desmond is dead, but is this his true fate?

#210. Posted by: Loz at May 27, 2006 2:37 AM

Has anyone mentioned the "voices" (heard through the walls in the hatch) that sounded like children talking? This was when Desmond and Locke were caught in the magnetic frenzy. There must be an undiscovered hatch where these people are living.

The ragged "others" seem to be slave-like beings for the masters such as Henry.

Everything the masters do is a cover-up. The fake doors, the fake beards etc. Nothing is as it seems.

Did you notice the people who captured Jack, Sawyer and Kate are not the same heathen-like tough guys who stopped them earlier on the when they were going after Michael? I wonder if these two groups, the tough guys and the "masters" could be opposing groups?

I keep thinking about the theories of the Devil Triangle in the Caribbean. One suggestion is a difference in the magnetic field that occurs in the area when the planes and ships are lost. Perhaps this is where the lost planes go, even though I know the island with the "lost" ones is supposed to be in the Pacific and not the Atlantic. Maybe there is a similar spot in the Pacific like the Devil's Triangle. Also, could the great magnetic field make something become invisible? Perhaps the island is not visible from a distance.

I don't think Michael and Walt will leave the island. I think they will both make a conscious decision to go back to the group and try to help them escape. Walt will probably be the one who will talk Michael into going back to help them. After all, Walt should know something about the others and how they operate.

The four toed foot might be a reference to genetic experimentation that is going on on the island Also cloning might be one of their goals. Whatever they are doing must have something to do with mind control as well as physical experimentation.

#211. Posted by: leah at May 27, 2006 3:25 AM

I'd like to point out that Kelvin, in the flashback with Sayid, told Sayid that he would use his torturing techniques later on in life. Thus, I'm certain that Kelvin had some part in placing Sayid on this mysterious island. Just a little tid bit I wanted to share with the rest of you. Thanks for all these discussions, it's been wonderful!

#212. Posted by: Rossman at May 27, 2006 5:16 AM

The Pala Ferry must be at the administrative "HQ" of the Dharma Initiative on the island. All hatch goers were probably told to go to the pala ferry once their relief came. This is probably where the Others actually live.

The look on HG's face when the sky went up was, what I thought fear, as if he knew they stopped pressing the button, and he knew what happened.

I think Kelvin was lying about his ex-partner, it seemed kind of improvised, either Kelvin killed him like Desmond did Kelvin, or he ran off or something.

I don't think Desmond is dead. The Hatch is an electromagentic station, not a nuclear arms depository station. I can imagine the next series having a scene of Desmond, hand on key, eyes closed, bracing for explosion, but nothing.
However, if there need be a character to die/be injured, I hope it is Locke. He has really become uncool. Punching Charlies, locking out priests, almost causing inevitable doom to the planet, either this happens or he has to live with what he almost did to everyone.

I don't think the hatch blew up, either...I agree with the theory that the key just reversed the strong magnetic pull, making it repel instead, and that repelling force made the hatch door fly over to the beach. The reason I don't think the hatch blew up is that I heard Desmond will be a regular next season, and unless he got to cover before it blew, he would be dead if the hatch blew up. Eko and Locke could have been in a safer place...or not...

That statue is freaky - reminds me of a poem:

Ozymandias, by Percy Bysshe Shelley

I met a traveler from an antique land
Who said: Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert. Near them, on the sand,
Half sunk, a shattered visage lies, whose frown,
And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command,
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read,
Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
The hand that mocked them, and the heart that fed,
And on the pedestal these words appear:
"My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings:
Look upon my works, ye Mighty, and despair!"
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare
The lone and level sands stretch far away.

Look at it from Desmond's point of view. Desmond was hostile to Kate and Locke in the beginning because they blew the hatch door to get inside, and if they were really the replacements, they would have just walked in the front door to the hatch.

Also, it doesn't mean that the world is a healthy place, ie maybe he ran into some "hostiles" or crazy french chick on one of his outings outside the hatch, making him believe that its unsafe to trust anyone too soon.

#217. Posted by: yensalt at May 27, 2006 12:46 PM

Mac, I think the Lost producers should pay you--I know I wouldn't be nearly as interested in this show if it weren't for this blog.

Since they cut away right after Jack saying, "I wouldn't bring you out here if I didn't have a plan," I'm hoping that means that Jack, Kate & Sawyer have a plan that is less lame than just meeting Sayid on the other side of the island, and that's what all the pointed staring and blinking is about.

Also, you know Desmond's book reading scene was much later--right after he rewound the BetaMax tapes in Purgatory.

#218. Posted by: jcs at May 27, 2006 1:45 PM

Ok, i just watched ep 23 again, and i have a couple of thoughts.

Could it be that the Elizabeth that Desmond runs into is actually a different person than Libby? Not only is her hair strawberry blond, and not dirty blond like Libby's, but her mannerisms are a bit different. Could it be?!?!? did the writers pull off the most used soap opera cliche and introduce an EVIL TWIN?!?! dun dun DUNNNNN!!
but then i thought about it, and said, ok, maybe Elizabeth and Libby are one and the same person, and her ex husbands name was David. Is it possible that one of the guys that Hurley accidentally killed was in fact Libby's husband David, and thats why Libby wants to exact revenge on Hurley and was stalking him. AND maybe thats why Hurly's imaginary friends name was also dave.... yea yea, i know, my two thoughts clash, but this cliffhanger has me caught in a net, and WGNBB!

namaste means have a good summer

Well, Desmond was sitting in an area designed to "blow" the hatch from. Also, it was below the Geodome thingy, which has blast doors. I think I finally realised why the blast doors are meant to withold even dynamite. This event.

#220. Posted by: CJ at May 27, 2006 6:02 PM

This season's ABC Lost Diary writer finally identifies himself. He is a 34-year-old man named Chris Dobson. They really fooled us by his writing that he believed his brother was the one being held in the hatch armory (so we thought it was a brother or sister to the real Henry Gale). But in reality (that's Lost reality), he had a memory block and his brother had died in the plane crash. He finally recalls it all and how Jack helped him bury his brother who was 2 years older than he, Steven Michael Dobson, born December 3, 1968.

#221. Posted by: Ardie at May 27, 2006 9:32 PM

I also had seen a map using the Lost numbers as degrees of longitude and latitude. But using the coordinates 4.815 and 162.342 you can still come up with 4 different locations depending on N/S and E/W. So 4.815 degrees above or below the equator doesn't make too much difference, but 162E would be between the Solomon Islands and the Marshall Islands, whereas 162W would be south of the Hawaiian Islands (near the Line Islands).

#222. Posted by: Ardie at May 27, 2006 9:44 PM

Is there a coincidence b/w Tom's real name and how Ana Lucia thought Jack's dad looked like a Tom? Maybe when Jack saw his dad before it was Tom in a disguise.

#224. Posted by: hkhnyigtuyjtyj at May 27, 2006 11:14 PM

I agree with Pete. I've noticed Odessy analogies throughout this show. Rousseau seems to fit the character of the witch. When the lostaways examine the trunk in the Arrow? hatch they find a flase eye, which makes me think that they may find a "cyclops" of sorts. Didn't Odisious discover an island of people who were NOT seafarers?
I was also pondering the 2 orientation films. Why the 2 names? Why the prosthetic? I was thinking that it was odd that 1 was Beta while the other was a film, but I suppose that if these was an "incident" the original Swan orientation video could have been erased due to sensitivity to magnetism. A replacement "film" was made for the new hatch inhabitants that was not sensitive to the magnetism. If this is the correct timeline, then it seems possible that Candle's losing his arm/hand could have been a result of the "incident."
Just a thought.

#225. Posted by: hooked at May 28, 2006 1:10 AM

Ardie--from my limited understanding of geography, if the island is to the east of the prime meridian (greenwich), the longitude is positive; if it is to the west of the prime meridian, the longitude is negative. So the numbers being positive would imply a North Lat and East Lon (4.815 and 162.342).

Is this island the isle of sirens, where ships are pulled in and crashed, not by maidens but by electro-magnetism? Or is it Calypso, where there is healing and fertility?

In reponse to Vikki:

I found this on the Web and it explains how Penny is locating Desmond. It is a real science that is practice today:

Electromagnetic Anomaly Detection technology not only detects the anomaly but also pinpoints it in close to real time. The technique accurately measures how close a target is to the sensor head, locates it in three dimensions and evaluates its orientation.

This also explains the white flash.:

When the brain is exposed to magnetic fields of specific frequencies, a flickering or flash of white light in the peripheral vision may be experienced.

#228. Posted by: L Geezee at May 28, 2006 1:06 PM

"Vikki" notes that we have seen only six vessels which have gone down on the island. This isn't true -- the plane carrying Eko's brother crashed there as well.

"The Pala Ferry must be at the administrative "HQ" of the Dharma Initiative on the island. All hatch goers were probably told to go to the pala ferry once their relief came. This is probably where the Others actually live."

Thats exactly what they were told in the Pearl orientation film.

Do you think that the Island may be Atlantis?
The statue with four toes looked as though it was wearing sandals from a time long ago.

SthrnMstGirl, you are right on point! If you have ever watched the movie "The Others", it hits on the same point. Nicole Kidman explains to her daughter that her father is off at war. And the daughter asks, "What side is he on, the goodies or the baddies?". Kidman replies, "The goodies of course". Her daughter responds, "But how do you know the difference between the Goodies the Baddies". Kidman just sits there perplexed. I can see the foreshowding of Season 3 showing the "Others" point of view. What have they really done that the Losties haven't? Losties have tortured and killed "Others" for no just cause. (expect Fear) We are going to see another spin on this story and I can't wait.

#233. Posted by: Laura at May 28, 2006 4:02 PM

Sorry if someone else has already posted this theory, but I did not finish reading all of the postings before writing this. First we all assumed that at the end of the episode that the two men in the snow were scanning for a magnetic anomoly since that was the message that was showing on the screen when they showed the computer. However, what if they were not scanning for magnetic activity, but insted they were scanning for the boat in the area that it disapeared. Could it be that the island has some sort of cloaking devise, aka Hennry saying that Michael will never be able to sind the island again, that keeps it hidden to the world and as such the boat can not be seen by any scanning device as long as it is in the shelter of the island. This could explain why they said we missed it again meaning that the boat went back on the radar when dewsmond sailed off only to be cloaked again when he returned to the island. With the electromagnetic activity it could mess up compass bearings and this is why he was constantly headed west and returned to the island. This may also be why mMichael; has to head at a bearing of 325, maybe that bearing is not affected by the magnet. Also, the men say that they have found it, not him. This could mean that there are not looking for anything pertaining to Desmond, we have just thought that because of her p[revious comment about wealth and determination finding anything. What if the others are a rough group from the initial Dharma group and it is Penns job to find them and this is why the scanning is going on. Anyway, just some thoughts.
Another thought, has anyone else thought that the blast doors were as much for keeping the effects of the sytem reset in as they were for keeping anything else out. It makes sence that there would be a lrge explosion or meltdown of some sort to trap in the magnetic force of the earth at that point which would be kept from destroying the island and the inhabitants by the blast doors keeping it in. Looking forward to your thoughts on these subjects.

#234. Posted by: hubguy at May 28, 2006 4:09 PM

One more thing. What is up with the four toes on the statue, and does anyone else think it has to do with the reason that the others we see do not wear shoes. Maybe there is anther form of people on this island with 4 toes that the others are worried about and that is why they keep their feet exposed so they can tell if there are any 4 toed beings among them? We will see in season three.

#235. Posted by: Hubguy at May 28, 2006 4:12 PM

Loz--

I may be wrong, but I always thought that ALL longitude is measured in positive numbers, starting at 0 deg at the Prime Meridian, moving east, and ending up at 360 (or back at 0) deg, at the Prime MEridian, to form a complete circle around the circumference of the earth. Upon further research, however, I am finding that Longitudes are measured in E and W, which would equate to a pos number E of the Prime meridian, and a neg number W of the Prime meridian, so you are correct. Latitude is of course measured in positive and negative, where positive is North of the Equator, and negative is South of the Equator. So with any longitude and latitude, you can find an exact spot on the surface of the earth. So if 4.815(N) is the latitude of the island, this places it just north of the equator, and if 162.342(E) is the longitude, this places the island 162.342 degrees east of the Prime Meridian. Mapquest places these lat/long coordinates in the pacific ocean, just northeast of Australia and Papua New Gineau.

Vicki, jb, cid, etc -
Regarding the possible position of the island. Locate 19.15.28 South, 158.55.25 West on mapquest. It is an island in the Southern Cook Islands, the proper distance east of Suva, the capital of Fiji. As far as I can tell it has no name and is unpopulated. It is within ocean ferry distance of Aitutaki Atoll (course 325 to the northwest) and Mapumai. This is pretty funny since I've heard that the next season of Survivor will be done right there ... talk about blurring realities!

Desmond knew his exact location to within meters when he was shipwrecked; ocean sailbots have several precision navigation systems onboard. You can see one in the rear left corner of the sailboat; it looks like a flattened white metal mushroom.

Could the big magnet have been powering a shield (or warped space, alternate dimension, or some other sci-fi concept like that) that protected the island from being seen or discovered?

The temporary failure of the shield then allowed flight 815 to crash there (while being pulled in as well by a very big magnetic field.) A temporary interruption of the shield, during lockdown, is also what allowed Dharma supplies to be dropped.

There must have been only one specific opening, then, in the shield that allowed it to be occasionally accessed by boat - remember Desmond couldn't get out on his boat, but Michael was given a very specific heading to follow.

When Des turned the key, then, he killed the power to the shield. Now the island can be found. The flashing sky, then, was just the shield turning off, not an explosion.

Having said all this, I'm quite curious as to why the Others appear apathetic about the hatch and the function that was performed there. They must not have considered it important to their own goals - unless they are ignorant about it, which doesn't seem likely.

#240. Posted by: Dave at May 28, 2006 4:59 PM

Pala is a major town on the small island of Atauro. Atauro is located just north of East Timor, north of Australia. A ferry connects Pala to East Timor. Atauro island was used as a prison island by the Portuguese in the 16th century (note the Portuguese connection.) The Pala Ferry could be the ferry that travels between Pala, Atauro and island 4.815N and 162.342E, which isn't that far away.

here is something that doesn't make sense...
if the DHARMA people knew about the magnet thing and set up that whole hatch then why would they put all those metal objects in there!!!
almost everything in there is metal...
i agree with the whole "reverse magnetism" thing flung that door up in the air and that would mean the hatch didn't explode but wouldn't that mean everything in the hatch would be reversed! dangerous much? (forks, knifes) ouch expesailly in a small confined space (the hatch)

#244. Posted by: Chris at May 28, 2006 10:27 PM

Pala Ferry could also be a reference to a novel by Aldous Huxley called "Island." Huxley's utopian island is called "Pala," and there are some strong similarities between its culture and that of the Dharma Initiative. Could be the Dharma people reside on Pala and do their research on the Lost Island.

#245. Posted by: Loz at May 29, 2006 2:56 AM

Since the boat's compass is screwed up by the effects of the magnetic interference, why hasn't any of them tried to navigate by looking for the North Star or something. There has to be a better way to navigate a ship before people used a compass. If I knew that there was some magnetic crap going on, I wouldn't trust my compass at all and try something else.

Any thoughts?

#247. Posted by: patboone at May 29, 2006 9:56 AM

I have to respectfully disagree with everyone who is trying to figure out which island the Losties are on.

I don't believe it is an actual island that we can see on charts or maps. I believe due to the magnetic properties of the island, its very hard to find by boating and perhaps its hard to see on satellite reconnaisance. As stated in season one, its hard to find something with satellites unless you know what you're looking for.

Also, I think FHG's statement when in the hatch "Not even God can see this island" is both cryptic and meaningful. The island can not be found, identified, or traced. Its not an island that we know of, and I think that's why Dharma/Widmore/FUBAR Industries have taken it over and conduct all their experiments there.

#248. Posted by: illusivemuse at May 29, 2006 10:31 AM

3 points:

1) When the two guys are alerted to the electormagnetic anomaly - one calls on the yellow phone, the other started typing on the computer. Is he putting in the a code? The famous number code?

2) Atlantis is a great idea. It works for me - at least for now.

3) The "camp" where Michael was taken was obviously a "set" - they'd never show where they live. They "others" are way to smart and have been on the island for a long, long time. They are in complete control and know the lay of the land and why they're there. Our buddies are on the island by mistake.

#249. Posted by: dk at May 29, 2006 4:55 PM

Mac - thanks for your amazing work! I really appreciate all of your efforts.

Questions:

Why do "voices" bother Hurley? Is he going to have another psychotic break?

Why did "Elizabeth"'s eye look older and have more wrinkles than "Libby"'s when it was over 3 years earlier?

Where did the idea come from that Libby was "stalking" Hurley? I missed that...

Thanks again for a great place to gather and go over theories!

Sara,... Libby was in the mental institution with Hurley and the director/producers made it look suspicious.

"we're gonna need a bigger boat"

...although according to Desmond, that won't help either.

hey all. been a long while since i've posted.

1) the two researchers at the end of the episode can't have taken a "Hanso careers" option in Iceland...the climate is off. http://elfurl.com/vgcmx

2) Rousseau should be labeled as another "Other" who's jerking the Losties around. as i've said before, Rousseau is not to be trusted. we don't have her backstory, she 'captured' FHG, and her daughter is 'captured' by the Others. i'll believe she's not an Other when i see a backstory on her like we did for Des

3) if the Pala Ferry campsite is a set, why couldn't the statue be part of an elaborate ruse as well?

i'm hoping that the Lost writers haven't "Jumped the Shark" and have bitten off too much of a plot structure than they can chew by expanding to backstories beyond those on the island. i'd hate to see the

cheers

#252. Posted by: jerson at May 29, 2006 8:56 PM

A couple more things:

-When Michael and the 4 get to the part right before they get captured. As they are being shot with those darts, there are wispers. I thought I heard "elizabet" / "flight 20" / "kill."
Was anyone able to hear what is being said?
-About the foot---Shouldn't there be another platform for the missing foot? The statue should be pretty big, correct?
-Did Des know what Kelvin was drawing? Because Des seemed pretty suprised when Locke said there was another hatch. Why wouldn't Desmond ask Kelvin what he was drawing???
-Someone mentioned using the stars to navigate off of the island. It would make sense, especially for someone that knows how to sail - like Des. But it didn't work for him? Another thing I noticed was that Sayiad was praying on the boat. Muslims usually pray towards Mecca, if I'm not mistaken, would he be guessing? Or is there a way for him to know which way Mecca is - and if so, could that possible help with him and/ or Sun/Jin to get off of the island??? Its a stretch, but a thought.

Isn't Kelvin some sort of term from chemistry? Thoughts??

#254. Posted by: sue at May 30, 2006 3:00 AM

bridget: i thought that too. at the time i really thought the bloke on the boat with glasses was jack...but then as the scene went on i thought it couldnt be!

#255. Posted by: kayleigh at May 30, 2006 10:11 AM

Man, I've been wanting to post for days, but had to make it through all the previous comments first! Very entertaining review as usual Mac, 'Kudos' just doesn't say it well enough!

I'm sure Sayid knew which way to pray due to the time of day and the position of the sun.

Regarding the Others being referred to as 'Hostiles', it's totally plausible to me. They've been nothing but hostile toward the Lostaways since they got there, kidnapping adults and children, infiltrating the group, killing in cold blood (like when one of them came in from the ocean in Season 1), etc. Even if their goals are 'good', their ends certainly haven't justified their means so far. Obviously Radzinski encountered the Others during his time in the hatch and was the victim of or witnessed aggressive behavior. That's why he dubbed them the 'Hostiles'. I believe it was Danielle who coined the term the 'Others' when talking to Sayid- otherwise the Losties might have come up with a similar term more akin to 'Hostiles'.

I think when Jack and Kate nodded/blinked to each other, they were indicating that they have something up there sleeves. They have a plan that we don't know about yet and were telling each other that the plan is still on. Looks like Sawyer is in the dark about it and was not too happy to see them signalling each other without knowing what it means. I don't think the writers would be cheesy enough to make their looks be indicating 'I love you/I love you too'!

#256. Posted by: JoePike at May 30, 2006 10:17 AM

I did not get the feeling that Sawyer was out of the Loop as to the plan at the end. His Look was more of anxiousness than it was of surprise, like why don't we do this now and make them take us to their camp. I think that Michael knew that the camp he was in was fake after walt told him that it is not what it seems, maybe not in so many words. I also think that Walt may have been in contact with Michael after he visited him at the camp. Since Walt knew where Michael was and he obviously has the abiltiy to astrol project himself judging by Mrs. Clugh's comments about has he ever showed up where he should not have been when he was living on the other side of the world. I think that Walt has a ood idea as to the size and scope of their opperations.
As for Locke and Eko, Charlie was surprised to find out that they were not back yet, at least judging by his comments of aren't they back yet. Maybe will will see a little Locke Eko espionage of the others in season three, they may have a Jesus Stick Plan brewing in their heads, let's just hope they remember to take the axe.

I finally had a chance to watch the end again. I have to admit, I thought some of you had your minds in the gutters when it was stated that Alex felt up Kate. She clearly did!! Was this a slip of the hands maybe or what, but it looked pretty obvious and strange to me. Any ideas why??

#258. Posted by: meg at May 30, 2006 10:57 AM

Regarding "The Grab" by Alex ...

It happened. It definitely, definitely happened.

My feeling is it was a screw-up that made it into the final cut. You can tell because the actress who plays Alex quickly snapped her hands away.

I know there's a suggestion that perhaps Alex slipped her something. Alas, I don't think that's the case. It was a cop ... not a slip ;)

#259. Posted by: mac at May 30, 2006 11:02 AM

I don't think the Libster was necessarily wearing a wig when she met Des, I think it was just how she wore her hair at that time. It was years earlier afterall. However, I DO think her meeting Des was a setup by Penny's father, as he wanted Des to get a boat and enter the contest. Penny's pop knew Des would get close to the island and would be able to trap him there, thereby getting Des out of Penny's life for good. Penny somehow found out about this and knows Des could still be alive on the island. She knows the only way to find the island is by detecting the magnetic anomalies. So she's paying these dudes (who are NOT Jack and Desmond!!!) to monitor for the anomalies, and they're in a place that can detect them best- maybe this place is remote and has minimal interference. So my take on the ending is that Penny is doing what she's doing specifically to locate the island so she can find and rescue Desmond.

Good point about FHG lying to Locke about not entering the numbers. FHG HAD to have entered the numbers or a system failure would've occured. So that makes me think that FHG wanted to convince Locke that he didn't have to enter the numbers, and that FHG wanted a system failure to happen for some reason.

Also, none of the Others seemed concerned about the white/violet light or piercing sound. They acted like nothing happened when it was over. Do they understand what happened? Why didn't they seem to care? They seemed as oblivious to what was going on as the Lostaways did, which I thought was very strange.

#260. Posted by: JoePike at May 30, 2006 11:18 AM

Mac, I completely agree about Alex copping a feel with Kate. A total mistake by the actress that made it into the final cut.

I think Alex is a very reluctant member of the Others. She's always apologetic to the Lostaways, helped Claire escape, and is concerned about Claire and her baby. I think she'll play a major part in helping Jack/Kate/Sawyer escape or somehow thwart the Others' plans in Season III.

To me, when FHG told Michael that they got more than they bargained for anyway with Walt, I took it to mean that they received everything they needed from him and then some. I think he could also have meant that Walt was hard to control, but mostly that they got more than they hoped for, were still going to be able to use what they got, but were now done with Walt.

One more thing- I think the hatch trio are still very much alive. I think Charlie was still in the hatch when Des turned the key so he saw and talked to Eko, Locke, and maybe Des after the craziness was over. That's why he was surprised they were not back yet. He probably took his time walking to the beach, or stopped to use a Dharma port-a-potty on the way back. So he thought they would have had plenty of time to beat him to the beach. Anyway, it's pretty clear to me that Charlie saying 'nothing happened' to Claire (aside from the flying metal objects) meant that the magnetism simply stopped and all in the hatch are okay.

Here's something to ponder over the next few months... Are you ready?

'Claire' is an anagram for 'Charlie' minus the 'h'!!!

Maybe the 'h' stands for Hanso, or Hurley, or Henry, or hatch, or horrible theory!!!

Omigosh, it's gonna be a long summer...

#262. Posted by: Mike at May 30, 2006 12:41 PM

Did anyone else think that coming ashore by boat would be fairly obvious to spot in broad daylight? When Sayid sailed around, I thought it sounded like the dumbest plan to "sneak" ashore. A boat would be so obvious.

Also, I think next season the baby of Sun will be taken, or at least be at risk. We should have a prediction board, and then look back to see who did the best at the end of the season.

Have a great summer Mac, thanks for the wonderful reviews.

One thing I was talking over with my wife was the other group of "others". Not the fake bearded "others" we have been seeing lately, but the other ones, the one's that we saw walking barefoot and dragging a teddy bear behind them earlier in season two. I'm still thinking these might be the children of the black rock survivors. Thoughts?

Have a great summer

Good theory Meg, but I don't think we'll see enough time pass during Season III for the Other's to take Sun's baby. It's taken two seasons to get through just a couple of months, so I don't think it'll happen. I agree that Sayid's boat was the furthest thing from inconspicuous possible! Of course they would've spotted the boat from miles away.

I didn't think anyone was in the bed with Penny- I thought she was alone. Her husband wasn't tolerating the picture because she never got married. The fact that the caller referred to her as Ms. Widmore, and the fact that the pic of her and Des was on the nightstand was supposed to clue us in that she's still single and still desparately seeking Desmond. I suppose she could've married and then divorced, but clearly she's not married now.

#265. Posted by: JoePike at May 30, 2006 1:52 PM

I don't think the Lost writers have jumped the shark at all, I think it's cool that they have answered some things and still kept the mystery going. If the last episode came and went with nothing being answered, I'd have jumped ship! I have some thoughts on previous posts

Metal in Hatch - Someone mentioned why Dharma would put metal in the hatch if they knew about the electromagnet. Well I think that could be explained by the incident. Before the incident the island would be as stable as any other place on earth except for whatever special properties were created by the magnetic field, just like the place of the healer Rose went to see. I think Dharma somehow tried to harness the power and something went wrong, leading to the incident and the button pushing

I think Walt will be back, his storyline isn't done yet. Maybe they'll finish it up in flashbacks or something. We still don't know why he was special. I also thought when FHG said they got more than they bargained for with Walt, he meant it to say it was better than they had expected. Also I still think the others wouldn't give Walt or their boat up. Even if they took blood, made a clone or whatever, it's not as good as the real thing. It makes more sense to me that the bearing FHG said would take them to rescue, could lead to an island or ship the Others use to refuel, get supplies and dharma costumes and they'll get caught again.

Also someone mentions how we would not see Sun's baby next season because of the shows timing, and it hit me that if every season is only a month, she wouldn't have the baby until Season 11 or 12. The writers have said they expect to only create 6 seasons of Lost, so why would they make Sun get pregnant? They could have just made her have a sickness that the island cured. Either Sun will just be pregnant for rest of the show or she loses the baby somehow.

Also I believe Penny was searching for Desmond since she did not get married and still has his picture on the nightstand. Of course this is not proof, but maybe a form of foreshadowing.

I (like someone above this comment) have just found the LOST Podcast site on the iTunes site. From what I can tell they (writers, producers, etc.) love to mess with our minds. Putting things in the show that don't mean a thing. Which I love! I think that trying to see something in every little minute of the show is just wasting time. Sometimes it's fun just to let the show unfold. The ex. prod. in the latest Podcast (Damon Lindelof & Carlton Cuse) recap the final show and reveal quite a bit.

MAC you are da man,
Quick little note about magnetism. I'm in Nashville and Vanderbilt U. just received a huge super magnet that is 420 times more powerful than the Earth's core. The director that will be running the dept says it will be used to (I am not quoting by any means)
line up cells or whatever to try and figure out origins and cures for diseases. Hanso figuring out the cure for cancer????

Theory -

After watching the season finale for the second time and seeing how everybody in LOST is connected in some way, has anybody considered the guy in the insane asylum that Hurley was in, the guy that Hurley got the numbers from to play the lottery. I know this is a stretch, my wonderful and smart wife came up with this theory, maybe he had been in the Darhma project, in the hatch pushing the buttons. Maybe that is why he kept repeating the numbers over and over. Maybe he was part of the incident? Work with me here. Is this a possibility? That guy isn't Radsiski or however you spell his name.

When Libby/Elizabeth met Desmond in the coffe shop, she said her dead husband "David" gave her the boat. Hurley's little imaginary buddy's name was....drum roll..."Dave". With Libby and Hurley being locked up in the same loony bin, is it too far fetched to think that they both conjured up the same imaginary friend??? On another note, why haven't we seen any of the Losties try to surf yet? Couldn't someone on the island MacGyver one up so they can shred it up a little and pass the time?

#272. Posted by: Chris In Carlsbad at May 31, 2006 2:04 AM

Has anyone seen any trascripts of the whispers in the finale (in the field by the pneumatic tubes) yet? I've been looking in the usual spots, but haven't seen any yet.

#273. Posted by: SthrnMstKGrl at May 31, 2006 7:39 AM

I too add my thanks to Mac's excellent recaps. I woud indeed be LOST without them! A long long summer looms....

Sorry to be so late in posting--I got the strong feeling that Walt and Michael's leaving was part of Jack's "plan"....remember that Michael was discovered by the group on the way to the Others' camp. What do you do with Michael at that point? He has to stay alive and in the group for Jack's plan to work, but would have to be "turned" somehow back to the side of the Losties. What better way than to promise safety for Walt?

I think W/M were supposed to leave, get Walt somewhere safe with Sayid's group's help to satisfy Michael (which would also protect pregnant Sun), and then he in return would help the Losties fight the Others (maybe to atone for his murders?).

This might explain Hurley's meek acceptance of the Others' command for him to return to camp. He has a temper, we have seen that when he attacked Sawyer, so he must be burning for a chance to avenge the death of Libby but he can't because of the "plan". Hurley looks to me like he is under very tight control, gritting teeth, and looks at Jack before reluctantly leaving, I think.

Maybe W/M "plan" to meet Sayid's group, after which Walt and Sun will be taken somewhere safe and Michael, Jin and Sayid will come to the rescue of the three captives. That's not a bad combo!

On the other hand, maybe W/M and boat will just be blown up in Season III as they chug away....very vivid, and wraps up that arc neatly and keeps FHG in character as a lying bastard.

Finally, why does everyone get so hung up on the label "good ones" that FHG uses for the Others? In science, a "good" specimen is one that helps prove the experiment. That's all, folks.

And it's just like FHG to mess with those terms because they are so ambiguous....even HE is laughing when he says this. Stop looking for these Others to be "good" in a moral sense. They aren't.

#274. Posted by: straitontilam at May 31, 2006 9:32 AM

Hmmm...my impression is that the Others think they ARE good in a moral sense. Case in point is what FHG says to AL in the hatch armory (quoting Mac's review):

"You killed two of us," Henry snarls. "Good people who were leaving you alone. [SLAM! CRACK!] You're the killer Ana-Lucia."

To me, the ends justify the means for the Others because they think they are the morally good people. And maybe also good genetically/experimentally, etc. So though 'good' probably does have several meanings, I think 'in a moral sense' is part of it.

#275. Posted by: JoePike at May 31, 2006 10:07 AM

meg said:
"Did anyone else think that coming ashore by boat would be fairly obvious to spot in broad daylight? When Sayid sailed around, I thought it sounded like the dumbest plan to "sneak" ashore. A boat would be so obvious."

Yes, meg, I said the exact same thing in the blog from "Three Minutes". Way too obvious...and someone with Sayid's background should know better. Regardless, they still wrote it in.

So here's my questions/observations, someone please help me since I just had to replace my TiVo and can't rewatch the episode on TiVo or on abc.com (something going screwy on their site).

First, when Kate and Jack exchange glances, is it possible they overhear FHG tell Michael how to get off the island? I know FHG and Michael step away from the group to talk, but I can't rewatch to see how far away they are from the group. If Kate and Jack can hear their discussion, then it would seem obvious that they are thinking....we have a boat and now we know how to get off the island.

Second, someone already said this, but it's REALLY odd that the bearing of 325 is something other than "the numbers". The writers go to such lengths to re-use the same numbers over and over again and now all of a sudden, they use something else. This is going to be really important somehow. (I know, this isn't a question!)

Third, on abc.com's front page, there is a picture of Eko but his hair is totally different and he has a full beard. Anyone else notice that? I know it's probably just a screen shot from next season, but I thought it odd that they are using an image that we haven't seen.

Fourth, I'm not liking the Atlantis thing....it smacks too much of "they're in purgatory, watching Beta tapes, trying to get a bigger boat, getting caught in a net doing the nasty, I mean, namaste".

#276. Posted by: socompletelylost at May 31, 2006 3:26 PM

When the whole magnet thing was happening, did you notice that the countdown thing (108) crumbles up? So, is there a new countdown of 108 and how do they know what the countdown is if it is destroyed? Also meaning, did it get destroyed the first time when the plane crashed? Any thoughts?

#277. Posted by: Jon is FOUND at May 31, 2006 3:33 PM

I can't find who wrote it but someone brought up a great point - who was it in the crazy house that Hurley got the numbers from? Why would he just keep repeating them over and over? Because he went bonkers putting the numbers in the computer? Hurley is the only one who knew of the numbers before coming to the island. Are the numbers no longer important now that the computer had been broken and the "key" was turned? I can't believe that the numbers are now gone.

#278. Posted by: dk at May 31, 2006 4:43 PM

Ok, I just sat through XMEN 3, god only knows why. Terrible movie which failed largely in comparison to number 2. But anyways, it gave me a new theory on LOST. This is extreme, but bare with me. You'll at least get a good chuckle out of it.

(Begin extreme x-men related theory)

Maybe these "others/hostiles" are former Dharma experiments/projects, (lab rats) gone wrong.

They've escaped. They've evolved, and now they are seeking revenge on their captors, the world, or Dharma. In other words others = mutants.

It makes sense because like the mutants of X-Men, these "others" seem to have their own uncanny set of powers.

- Ethan & his strength.
- FHG & his above normal hearing.
- Libby also has "other" potential with her telekinesis and island connections.

Additionally, the "others" are amazed by Walt's psychic powers. The one question that always stuck out in my mind was when Klugh asks Michael, if Walt had ever been in a place he wasn't suppose to be? They also take Michael's blood. Could they be searching for the mutant, I mean "other" gene. lol. Is Walt one of them?

And what's with their dire need for children and babies? My theory, just like in the X-Men series, the mutant gene isn't discovered till much later stages of life. Mid-teens basically. Are they injecting these kids/babies not with a vaccine, but with the "other" gene? Or do they need these pure, innocent little lifes to breed their genes into?

And last but not least the connection between Oceanic Survivors and the other's lists of goodies and baddies. What would make sense based on the above extreme theories, is that all survivors have ties to the island, and are either connected to or anncestors of the "others" or "dharma". Maybe the connection to the others would cause them to be labeled as the good ones by the others. Maybe our heroes have undiscovered powers as well. (ie. Locke's healing abilities.) He's also pretty good with knives! Could have be LOST's version of Wolverine? lol.

No normal human being survives a plane crash. God damn mutants are taking over the world I tell ya.

And just as Magneto thinks Mutants are the good guys, Fake Henry Gale thinks the "others" are as well.

lol.

(End extreme x-men related theory)

Ok, regarding the 'Plan' and the obvious wink wink, nod nod between Jack and Kate, and the clear submissiveness of Hurley in the presence of the Others at the dock. If you examine the scene where Jack says, paraphrased 'I wouldn't have done it if I didn't have a plan', our first assumption is the plan with Sayid to attack from the sea. Set that aside for a moment, and consider, that perhaps the plan was never to attack, but to observe where the Losties get taken by the Others, either landbound or seabound. This may still occur, and this would require Jack, Sawyer, Kate and presumably Hurley (at the time of the 'planning') all allow themselves to be captured. Now this probably didn't go down exactly as Jack had envisioned, but the end result is the same. Sawyer of course would argue that a brute force attack would yield more substantial results, but the crux of this line of thought, is that Jack is one helluva poker player.

Jack is 'slow playing' FHG and the Others. He's sitting on a pair of pocket Aces, and their playing into his scheme, not their own.

One thing we've learned about the Others is that they are terribly good at planning, predicting, and executing kidnappings, and dramatic effects. To my point, the 'don't cross this line - Light 'em up' scene, and within that scene, being aware (presumably by having a rear guard) that Kate was following the Lostie group. Also there was the set up for Michael, with the Other dude whizzing on the tree, catching Michael totally off guard, while Zeke/Tom et al, come up behind him. This was set up, and Michael walked right into it.

So we know they are good at these types of maneuvers. Jack knows this too now, and won't get caught off guard again. There is a plan, and Jack is letting it play out.

dk & others asking about the guy in the loonie bin with Hurley.

His name was Leonard and he was never on the island. In Hurley's first flashback in the episode "the numbers", when Hurley goes to visit Leonard, Leonard explains the following to him.

- "Sam Toomey" heard the numbers when they were working one year in Kalgoorlie, Australia.

- The numbers are bad.

Later Hurley goes to Australia to speak with Sam. He ends up meeting his wife.
And we learn the following.

- Sam killed himself. Put a shotgun to his head, similar to Rizintski.

- Leonard served with Sam in the U.S. Navy years ago.

- Sam heard a voice repeating those numbers, over and over again while serving his post at a naval listening post monitoring the South Pacific, 16 years ago. (this is the same transmission that brought Russoeaux to the island. The same transmission she changed at the yet visited radio tower)

- Sam also used the numbers to win a gamble. He was cursed with the same bad luck. everyone close to him died.

Hope that clears up the mystery for you guys! It was all in season one.

My apologies if someone has said this already but:

In regards to the whole Pen looking for Desmond thing, what if the race was a big hoax put on by Widmore to get rid of Des? He knew it would send him straight to this unfindable island where he was conducting experiments and Des would be lost forever or killed. Pen found out about all of this and has spent her life since trying to find Des. Too off base? Maybe...

KUDOS, Mac! (I agree with you, Kara! Mac knows he is good and thorough: his ego does not need to be "stroked"! Let's save our typing/reading for more "Lost" theories!)
Could the cable be like a long electrical line bringing power to the hatches?
FHG let M/W go as a "show" of the Others' honor...but when M/W's boat gets out of sight, what will happen? Will it be drawn back...or explode?
I like ToddG's wife' theory: that the guy Hurley got the #s from in the asylum had been in the Darhma project, in the hatch pushing the buttons, and had gone bonkers in The Incident.
Thanks, Mac, for being my "eyes and ears" when I have to miss an episode, and even when I've seen them!
Lois

#286. Posted by: Lois at May 31, 2006 10:45 PM

I'm 0 for 25 on theories, so here's my last for the summer, broken into three parts:
(Part I) The Swan station could be the generator of massive electrical power which is distributed through the thick cable out to the water and around to the east part of the island and maybe to another hidden island called "Pala", where there are barracks. As I recall in order for a fusion reactor to work enormous magnetic force is required. So the flash we saw at the end may have been an out of control nuclear fusion reaction, but the mysterious magnetic force still remained, shielding the island. The previous incident, but probably not the first (with Desmond and Kelvin), may have been a similar event, which means whenever such an event occurs there is a temporary hole in the pervasive mysterious shield, making the island visible for a few seconds. Furthermore whenever such an incident occurs an electromagnetic pulse is radiated outward into the sky, which for the previous incident caused the Oceanic jet's electrical system to fail and thus force it down.

#287. Posted by: Loz at June 1, 2006 2:20 AM

(Part II) One of the Swan station's functions could be to control the release of extra energy created by the fusion reactor (deep below the island) which must occur every 108 minutes or the reactor will overheat. Why would this not be an automated update, since this is why computers exist? Maybe to keep wayward travelers there and prevent them from thinking about trying to leave.
The important thing is that Desmond probably shut down the reactor before the out of control nuclear fusion created a meltdown, which might explain the Others' initial alarm and then complacency. Or it may have shut down automatically, only after giving the impression to workers that all hell is breaking loose, again to convince them to keep pressing the button in the future.

#288. Posted by: Loz at June 1, 2006 2:25 AM

(Part III) The Others were all along content to have Desmond pressing the button. The arrival of the Losties disrupted everything. They are interfering with Dharma's important, utilitarian research, which is why the Dharma people are the good guys and the Losties are the bad guys. Walt may have been removed, and Claire's baby attempted to be removed, because utilitarians believe all children should be brought up by shared parents, to avoid parental indoctrination. The smoke, polar bears, and other weirdness are all related to Dharma research.
Perhaps Kelvin was a low level Dharma worker. Radzinski, however, was most likely high level; he may have designed the fusion reactor and spliced the tapes to give just enough information to confuse any randomly lost travelers.

#289. Posted by: Loz at June 1, 2006 2:30 AM

I don't think the Portuguese(Brazilians?) look like anyone else, but how about this: 6 minutes and 15 seconds into "Man of Science, Man of Faith" which was rerun last night, there's a doctor who sure looks like Hurley's Dave.

When the credits show Director of Photography MICHAEL BONVILLIAN, you'll see him to the side of the policeman, walking down the hall of young Jack's hospital before his future wife's surgery.

#290. Posted by: Dave at June 1, 2006 8:06 AM

*BONVILLIAN -- sorry, make that BONVILLAIN

#291. Posted by: Dave at June 1, 2006 8:08 AM

mac Just an idea...since they are reairing old episodesnow, it might be fun to have new discussions about them based on what we know now. Could we set up forums for this based on each rerun? Or just discuss here all summer?

#292. Posted by: meg at June 1, 2006 8:57 AM

Why wouldn't MAC want to have his ego stroked? I'll continue to do it...kudos just isn't enough! I may start using another acronym though...like GAFRAM (Great And Funny Review Again Mac), or YATKOALER (You Are The King Of All Lost Episode Reviewers). Or how about a combo?

GAFRAM!YATKOALER!

Sounds good to me. And I'm sure he wants to take the summer off from reviews. I'm sure he won't mind us chatting about the re-runs, and will continue to post new news, but that's probably about it.

One more thing. My impression was that the turning of the key was a system shutdown...which negated the need for the numbers ever to be entered again. The Lostaways have no way to do it now anyway, thanks to Locke smashing the computer and the countdown display getting crunched. So while I'm sure the nubmers will still be a significant part of the show, they won't need to be (and can't be) entered anymore.

#293. Posted by: JoePike at June 1, 2006 11:21 AM

Long time reader but usually nothing new to add. Watched an old WWII movie this weekend - John Wayne in In Harm's Way. There was a battle in Pala Passage. I googled this and there is such a place but can't find out what islands border it. Maybe this is related to the Pala Ferry. I was also wondering why they needed a sign saying Pala Ferry unless maybe there's more than one Ferry? Anyone?

#295. Posted by: DB IN BC at June 1, 2006 2:52 PM

Geez! Finally read the whole thing...As with everyone else - Mac - you're aces! How about doing your own version of LOST for the summer. Ok, maybe not, we'd never go back to the show! Just a few things I wanted to add from the above posts: about Libby being in Austrailia when she gave the boat to Des - he was stateside when they met - he used all his American money for a cab...
If you go to the Widemore site now you can't access it due to "Access verification unexpectedly offline #CERB815. Could they be refering to the "cerebrus project" with flight 815? Smokey was killed when the magnet was shut down?
Someone mentioned a university that was doing research with a magnet that has 420X the strength of the earth's core. MRI's are set for 5,000-20,000 gauss and the earth is 0.5 gauss so 420x isn't all that. MRI's magnets are also bathed in liquid hydrogen to maintain the magnetic flow. MRI's align the bodies cells so they can image them & make clear pictures. The magnet on LOST would have to be extreme to pull a plane down. I'm not a doctor but I don't think the human body could withstand that kind of force.
Sorry for the long post but that was A LOT of postings to go thru! Keep it going - I've got to have something for the summer!!!

#296. Posted by: dazed at June 1, 2006 2:59 PM

DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY THOUGHTS ON THIS??
When the whole magnet thing was happening, did you notice that the countdown thing (108) crumbles up? So, is there a new countdown of 108 and how do they know what the countdown is if it is destroyed? Also meaning, did it get destroyed the first time when the plane crashed?

#297. Posted by: Jon is FOUND at June 1, 2006 3:01 PM

No, it didn't get destroyed the first time when the plane crashed. Apparently Des was gone long enough for the system failure to start, and for the plane to be broken apart, but not long enough for other significant or permanent damage to the hatch or the countdown thing.

My impression is that there will be no new countdown necessary. The whole process was brought to a halt by Des turning the key. No need to enter the numbers anymore because there's no longer the danger of the magnetic overload.

On the part 1 review, Steve posted a really interesting theory (5/27 @ 10:10). I like it!

Taking his theory one step further, I remember reading somewhere that the black smoke was going to figure in to Season 3 a lot and one of the producers, when interviewed, said we'll realize the black smoe was also in the Season 2 finale, but we won't realize that we've seen it until they reveal more in Season 3. So, if Steve's theory on the black smoke is right, then the Hurley bird might have been the back smoke.

this is the second time that des says to someone before he is about to leave or in this case do something that might be hes last thing -"see you in another life" ,maybe another life is where the others reffer to as home when they talk to hurley at the end of the episode.
maybe next season we are about to have another platform for the show besides the island.
i dont remmember where in this episode i heard it but i think that at some point in this episode there were wispers in the island that sounded like they are saying "elizabeth", maybe david , her late husband is there too , maybe he is part of the black cloud of smoke that we have seen earlier in the show , maybe the signle cloud and the soul cloud are related somehow.
a very important point is -how the hell did the hatch door got blown into the air , it was laying on the ground beside the hatch , not covering it !!!
unless the door the got blowen came from another new hatch that havnt been discovered so far and the explosion just now blew open and who knows whats in there or whats going to come out of it next!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What is that in their hands? Check out the screen caps. The blonde Other on the right, and the man on the middle left are holding something (not guns) that look like remote controls. Tazers maybe? or the dart shooter? Phaser, communicator? :D

What is that in their hands? Check the screencap below. The blond Other on the right, and the man in the middle left are carrying something (not guns). It looks like a remote control, Tazer, Phaser, communicator, or whatever Cap'n Kirk. Interesting. Wonder if its a transporter signal, or a handheld Romulan cloaking device?

Mike, thanks for both screen shots. I really enjoyed seeing Alex feel Kate up, especially since I missed it the 1st time around. Anyway, in the 2nd screen shot, they look like tazers to me, but still that's pretty sophisticated for a bunch of people that are supposedly desserted on an island.

#311. Posted by: socompletelylost at June 2, 2006 2:44 PM

Wow. I just read something on lost-media.com (scroll down to the NY Times article). Per Lindelof and Cuse (executive producers)...

**POSSIBLE SPOILERS AHEAD ON SEASON 3**

Article said that when the button wasn't pushed "There WAS a huge explosion, and if Desmond had not activated a BACKUP system... it might have led to... sucking everything on earth into itself". Backup system? I thought the key turned it off, per Kelvin? Explosion? I was hoping it was just some electromagnetic pulse...

Also, it says "that if this season was about the HATCH, next season will be about the OTHERS, as led by Henry Gale (played by Michael Emerson, who will join the regular cast)... viewers will learn...Who are these people? How many of them are there? What is their history? What are they tring to accomplish?" So, it looks like several posters are right, that next season will be alot about the Others.

Also says they wanted to "blow up several theories of the show", including purgatory or that they're subjects of an experiment...

Sorry for the all caps spoiler warning, but I hate not being warned. :)

I confess to just rewatching the first part of this episode and noticed that there's a little chunk of time missing that was probably when Jack and Kate (as possibly Sawyer and Hurley?) communicated regarding Michael being compromised ... On the beach, Michael freaked out when Kate mentioned the fake beards and outfits (and then the story cuts away to Desmond's backstory, the hatch, etc.), and when we come back to the group, their walking formation has completely changed and Kate is walking with Sawyer and discussing getting "caught in a net."

Having looked in more detail at screenshots from these episodes I have come up with a theory on the symbols on the timer after it counts down. I have read through and this appears not to have been mentioned before. Although 2 at least are consistant with egyptian hieroglyphs, the symbols may represent the various hatches on the island, from left to right they could be the staff, the pearl, the flame, the swan (or the ?), and the arrow. The significance of this is unclear, and also the significance of the two on the right being red. It is merely an observation that will no doubt keep me perplexed for most of the day.

any thoughts?

thnks for all the fun....

#315. Posted by: adolfo fajardo at June 3, 2006 3:34 PM

What if "more than we bargained for" simply means that the others hadn't counted on Michael (and the other 815 survivors?) fighting so hard to get Walt back? And that they would gladly find a discreet way of getting Walt and Michael off the island because the fuss that Michael has made could potentially jeopardize whatever they're up to. Or that the "crash" survivors are potentially a threat somehow (by possibly joining the rescue mission)? I really hope that the mystical hype around Walt is justified at some point in season 3, though I have a feeling that we, as viewers, have been set up to choose between the more suggestive (and FUN) explainations, and simple explainations in the wording of the script. Damn, what a great show. AND blog, mac. aii.

#316. Posted by: cominghome at June 3, 2006 10:02 PM

they are all on Atlantis..... didnt the ancient race have some special power force that made them advanced?? Didn't they all die in some "incident" when the whole island went missing??? DID SOMEONE FORGET TO PUSH THE BUTTON?
ok ok.... Im being funny but at least that would explain the statue.

#317. Posted by: Christine T at June 4, 2006 3:15 AM

They are on atlantis. and they are trying to bring back the people of atlantis by using the losties..haha

#318. Posted by: Evan at June 4, 2006 12:57 PM

Lizzy,

Regarding the timer, some research was done by posters and they theorized (from internet research) that the countdown clock read "Death". I can't remember exactly where I saw this, but check previous episode posts from "One of Them" and you might find it there.

Last night (6/6) as i was watching Boston Legal from 10 - 11 PM another Hanso Foundation commercial was aired. I can't remember the the web address but it looked like it was a new one.

#321. Posted by: ffej at June 7, 2006 4:22 PM

I'm not sure if anyone will read this being so far down, but my husband brought up a really good thought. We now know that there is some kind of magnatisim going on on the island, now isn't it getting popular to use magnets in things like shoes, to help with pain, and joints and walking, things like that. What if that has something to do with Locke, and Roses' miracle healing, any thoughts?

Here is what I thought after seeing this episode. It however, only explains Desmond. Penny apparently loves Desmond very much. She also wants him to LEARN this. She has tons of money. He says he is going on this race. Penny plants Libby with the boat. And sets up the island thing knowing Desmond will get trapped there. The whole point of the key (and letting the whole thing go ) is that Desmond learns the lesson Penny wanted him to learn. As long as Desmond kept pushing the button, the food would come. If he dies on the island and doesn't turn the key, then Penny knows he is dead and never learned the lesson. The false alarm mentioned by the iceland dudes provides some confirmation of this. The fact that Penny put the note in the book, knowing he would read it before he thought he would die (the only way someone can know that is if they are prone to suicide) also supports the theory that this is all her test. If he dies, the system failure happens and the key never gets turned. If he becomes so desperate as to contemplate killing himself, he will read the book, and then he will have the 'courage' or whatever she said to turn the key and blow the whole thing up. So he thinks, and Penny knows he learned the lesson - Hence the guys in iceland with the phone.

I don't think he actually dies.

This however does not explain the others.

You are right Charlie did act different. However I loved his line to Claire - something like which "excaping the flaming fireball or being attached by a flying fork..." or something along those line.

#324. Posted by: anna at June 9, 2006 2:41 PM

At the end, Kate and Jack weren't making secret signals. He was telling her it was going to be okay (the nod). And she was honing in on his face, trying to absorb comfort from his confidence. (She stared - the blink was incidental; try staring without blinking!)

Kate always melts and turns to Jack during a crisis, to get out of trouble. But when everything's normal, she finds herself more attracted to Sawyer, because he generates trouble.

Pretty messed up, hunh?

GREAT writers! ;)

Neat screenshots, Mike. Perhaps the Others are holding the weapons they shot the Lostaways w/ shortly after they discovered the great pile of journals.

Interesting hieroglyphics idea from Lizzy!(glyphs as hatch/station names)

I'll just post my comment again from the previous page, cuz I'm curious.

Is it possible the hatch door that came plummeting to the ground after the island burped a big one was from a different hatch somewhere on the island? Maybe the "?". I believe all of the hatch doors we have seen so far (I think 3 or 4 in total) have had the word "Quarintine" written on it.

#328. Posted by: CeStyle at June 11, 2006 3:24 PM

What I don't understand is why "Henry" told Locke that he didn't press the button and nothing happened. Obviously, "Henry" knew what would happen if the button wasn't pressed, so why would he egg John on not to press it? I know "Henry" is the master of mind games, but this just seems really fishy to me. What do others think?

>Isn't Kelvin some sort of term from chemistry? Thoughts??

>-- Posted by: sue at May 30, 2006 03:00 AM

Lord Kelvin (1824-1907) was a British mathmatician and physicist who did pioneering works in themodynamics. The absolute temperature on the Celsius scale is expressed in degrees "Kelvin" in his honor.
(Freezing point of water
= 0 degrees Celsius
= 273.15 degrees Kelvin)

Where the hell has Roussea been? WTF? There has to be some connection with her/FHG? She is the one who captured him!!
Also, as for the polar bear, isn't it possible that Walt thought it up and some how made one appear with his creepy powers? Remember he was reading that comic that had the polar bear in it? Before wasn't he reading a book on a rare bird and then one crashed into the window?

^^^ yes but walt didnt see a sunburnt penguin, when he saw 1 on the card michael gave him

#333. Posted by: h00pz at July 12, 2006 2:05 PM

Im not shure if anyone else figured this out, or if this issue has already been addressed, but if you add the numbers for the computer (4 8 15 16 23 42) it equals up to 108, the time in which you have to enter the code and push the buttom. I dont necessarilly think this means anything, but i think it supports the theory that before the "accident" occured in the hatch, the reason for the hatch existing was strictly an experiment and nothing more. Then the "leak" or "accident" happened, and pressing the button is what would stop the elecromagentic field from becoming too powerful. I think the purpose of the island is for human genetic research. But then again, i may be wrong.

I got about halfway down these comments, so apologies if I missed this. Someone said about the hatch exploding the door off.

We know the door was on the ground when the dynamite went off, so it wasn't that... I came to the conclusion that after all this magnetism builds and builds, what else can happen? I shouldnt imagine it just got so strong and stopped. I think it must have sent the opposite effect when the hatch melted down, i.e. repulsed. This is why the hatch was fired into the air!

Probably means nothing to nobody, but it can't be good for a plane! It must have been torn apart by this repulsion wave... if it was being attracted, it would have just all come down in one bit right?

At least it lays to rest the theory that the plane was sent there to crash doesnt it? I mean, it was only random events on the island that made the incident, Desmond could have just stayed back and pressed the button!

Anyway enough from me, THANK YOU for the wonderful episode guides, it stopped me going off Lost mid-season by pointing out all the things I missed.

I'm from the UK, so we dont get the finale until Tuesday (i couldnt resist after seeing an advert with nuclear skies and people huddled on the floor with their hands over their ears). Just in time for season 3!! Keep up the good work, brother ;)
