Lost Blog: Format Change Coming

You'll have to excuse my inflated self-importance, but I figured a few Lost Blog regulars might want to know about a format change I'm planning.

For the last couple years I've written long, detailed episode reviews that try to capture as much information as possible. Writing these behemoths is an involved process that takes more than six hours per review. Unfortunately, I'm not going to have that much time when the show returns.

When "Lost" re-premieres in early February, you'll notice that my reviews will be considerably shorter. Rather than focus on every detail, I'm going to pick out the core details I feel are important and put my efforts behind those. My writing style will still be the same (a fact I'm sure a few folks lament), but the depth of the reviews will be limited. This isn't an ideal situation, but it's the best option I've got (it's also the only way I'm going to avoid the icy hand of burnout).

Just to be clear: I am not quitting. I will still write and post reviews within 24 hours of new episodes and the Lost Blog will continue to be a hub for "Lost" conversation.

Question? Comments? Post 'em below! -- mac

Don´t worry, some other guy is going to to the job and we are going to find him.

Uh, thanks?

#2. Posted by: mac at January 15, 2007 10:53 PM

Not to worry, Mac! It'll be great! That leaves us much more time to read your thoughts and add our own pithy comments.

#3. Posted by: shannon at January 15, 2007 11:39 PM

Thanks Shan! People have always been so good about adding their own observations -- my hope is that the sum total of everything (my review + comments) will yield a total review. Hell, that's what's been happening all along! -- mac

#4. Posted by: mac at January 15, 2007 11:41 PM

Looking forward to your reviews, mac. Most of us can understand the time management issue; we'll miss the minute details, but any mac is better than no mac.

#5. Posted by: James at January 15, 2007 11:53 PM

I appreciate that James. -- mac

#6. Posted by: mac at January 15, 2007 11:55 PM

No worries, Mac! All us "Lost-obsessed" folks qill be more than happy to hash (and re-hash!) all the minute details each and every week. Your fab summary -- regardless of length -- is ALWAYS the perfect kick-off to great "lost" chat!

We love ya!

PS: Rodrigo Santro told Rolling Store (Brazilian edition) that his character will not be no the show past this current season. A new year's prayer answered for many!

#7. Posted by: GatorGal at January 16, 2007 12:06 AM

Thanks for the update. I'm sure it'll be stick t'yer sides funny as usual.
It's amazing how new babies take up so much time, isn't it? I have a 14 month old and it just gets better!

#8. Posted by: Joss at January 16, 2007 1:04 AM

Will be good just to have your reviews and comments on the show Mac. Makes Thursdays at work go a little easier.

#9. Posted by: Kalico at January 16, 2007 7:47 AM

The amount of time you've spent on this forum is amazing, Mac, & we appreciate every minute of it. Thanks! And I well remember what the first year of a baby's life is like...aka Baby Boot Camp... ; >

#10. Posted by: Alaïs_Longthought at January 16, 2007 9:14 AM

Hi everyone,

Mac I love your posts, but since you say you wont be doing full recaps anymore just wanted to pass along another site that does do them.

#11. Posted by: Scott at January 16, 2007 9:23 AM

No worries Mac. Whatever you write will be great.

New baby gotcha busy? Been there, done that and I fully understand.

#12. Posted by: LiSa at January 16, 2007 10:54 AM

I was just going to say that about the baby when LiSa beat me to it!!

Ease into it mac, kids get easier. I'll let you know when as soon as I figure it out. Six is a good age. I am still going to be ever faithful to you.

#13. Posted by: meg at January 16, 2007 11:56 AM

I'm not certain that you'll find it as easy as all that to reduce time spent on the project, Mac. I'm put in mind of the Mark Twain quote that goes something like: "If you want me to speak for ten minutes, I'll need a week to prepare. If you want me to speak for an hour, I can do so at any time."

The solution is to multi-task. Somewhere in the old photo albums, I've got a picture of me working at the old CPU, semi-reclined, keyboard in my lap, and baby perched asleep on my shoulder like a kitten in the nook of a tree limb. I'll have to see if I can dig that one up, scan it and send it to you--for inspiration. ;-)

And, oh yeah, sleep is for the weak! :-D

#14. Posted by: Deep Cover at January 16, 2007 12:09 PM

Just kidding of course. No worries. We've been spoiled with the impressive detail of your Lost reviews so far...almost too good to be true...all good things must come to an end...change is inevitable.

Now I am 100% sure we'll be spoiled with your unparalleled ability to effectively hit and describe the main points of each episode. Just please don't skimp on the wit and if you're capable of lessening them!

And I empathize. I have a 3 month old (plus 2 older kids), so if it wasn't for work I doubt I'd ever have time to read all of your reviews!

#15. Posted by: JoePike at January 16, 2007 12:12 PM

This wouldn't perchance, have anything to do with a new baby?

Somebody beat me to pointing out that short can take more time than long.

Anyone suffering from a shortage of reading material is welcome to click over to where there's this brilliant new *ahem* blogger holding forth on HBO's best series.

But I'll definitely be back here to read whatever you write at any length, Mac.

#16. Posted by: Cecil Rose at January 16, 2007 12:41 PM

As I've said once before. Checking your review after I've seen Lost is like a religion to me. And I love it. So I'm happy that you are still willing to do the job. Even if it is a little less.

And half of the fun is reading all the comments afterwards. We will still get that won't we?

#17. Posted by: SnakeJake at January 16, 2007 12:54 PM

Of COURSE the comments will continue! That's the best part! -- mac

#18. Posted by: mac at January 16, 2007 1:06 PM

It's all be cause we love you Mac. We're like one big Lost family looking out for each other. My baby will turn 21 this month and it just seems like yesterday I was juggling work, baby and free time. Have faith. You'll do just fine.

#19. Posted by: LiSa at January 16, 2007 1:19 PM

Looking forward to the new format...your witty reviews will be appreciated now more than ever. T- minus 22 days and counting!

Thanks again for the hard work and wonderful recaps.

#20. Posted by: Sillygirl0630 at January 16, 2007 1:34 PM

Whew! You had me worried when I first started reading your message - but I'm okay now. As you can see by everyone's reply, as long as you're keeping you're awesome, witty writing skills - some Mac is better than no Mac. The only thing I look forward to as much as watching LOST is reading your reviews (of ANY length). Welcome back Mac-Daddy!

#21. Posted by: BunnyLover at January 16, 2007 3:21 PM

mac- size isn't important, or so they say! I truly appreciate all that you do. And so do a whole slew of other people. I've visited other Lost sites and read some of the blog. Nothing compares to your site - AND I have never sent blog to another Lost site. In fact, I have not seen any of our regulars names on those sites. And finally mac, none of those sites is in "My Favorite Places," only yours. We luv ya baby!

@ Jhon - duh, what planet are you from? I don't want to stir things up, therefore will not respond if you repsond to this -> that was a totally "uncaring" thing for you to say.

#22. Posted by: ButchM at January 16, 2007 5:03 PM

A simple line from you is better than all the other lost-webs together...
I must confess I read your review before I watch the episode, so I won't miss a sigle brain's gotta do a very big effort, thanks for that, I'm becoming intelligent! :)

#23. Posted by: Mj at January 16, 2007 6:38 PM

Congrats on becoming a parent!
I've heard that some babies do sleep regularly at night, but none of my 4 did. Enjoy those moments, watching the sun come up together; those are times to treasure. Really.
You've created more than just a blog here, it's kind of like a Lost "show club". Even if your reviews are shorter, I'm sure they'll be great, and bring on a chuckle, or five.
The comments can fill in the details, and connections, just like always.
So, again, congrats on your new baby, and who knows, maybe you'll be even more witty sleep-deprived... :)

#24. Posted by: lost chao at January 16, 2007 6:59 PM

To quote Rodney Dangerfield, "Now I know why tigers eat their young."

Seriously though, ya gotta set priorities in life. And if taking care of your kid(s) ain't your #1 priority, then you got problems.

I love reading your recap, Mac, and all the general smart-assery that ensues. But rugrats gotta come first. So if you gotta cut the recap short by ten or twenty or fifty percent, why, you go right ahead and do it. We'll still be here cuz you've provided us all with an open forum for give-and-take and exchanging ideas and opinions. Some may be a bit goofier than others but whaddaya gonna do?

I think in a few weeks or months when your new family settles in to a routine you'll find yourself with an extra fifteen or twenty minutes occasionally (between wiping off the back of your shirt where the baby just gacked up on ya - you'll learn to take a quick step forward when you hear Mt. Vesuvius gurgling) that'll do just fine for putting fingers to keyboard.

Hell, I got by for several years with only three or four hours of sleep at night. I don't remember 1999 - 2002 too well, so if somebody could catch me up that'd be great...

BTw - I hear that new My Name Is Earl blog is pretty darn good too...

#25. Posted by: ransomjackson at January 16, 2007 7:26 PM

No worries, Mac, we read your blog for your style and entertaining ability to identify the most interesting parts of the episode anyway!
(as one of my co-workers remarked this past fall, your blog was more entertaining than that episode itself!)

#26. Posted by: rentagoodbook at January 16, 2007 8:01 PM

THREE weeks from tonight and, make no mistake, we are ALL counting! EEK. Just had to say that.

@ransomjack -- when someone fills ya in on those years, would you let me know? If I got 4 hours of sleep a night, I was lucky! But, wouldn't change a minute. Not one minute. Time really does seem to fly by once kids enter your life.

#27. Posted by: GatorGal at January 17, 2007 1:37 PM

Looks like we'll have to make our own funny!

#28. Posted by: PiecesofArzt at January 17, 2007 3:12 PM

I heard that the whole Y2K thing was a bust, and that George Bush won the presidency cuz o' some guy named Chad. Other than that, I got nuthin'...

#29. Posted by: ransomjackson at January 17, 2007 10:04 PM

..doesn't phase me. I know yer reviews will still kick ass Mac.

Shorter , longer, whatever... I'll be here to soak it up !

It's cool, being a parent changes everything.

Heh heh ... good thing I like you, Rach ;)

#33. Posted by: mac at January 20, 2007 8:25 PM

I think we should pitch in (or better yet ABC should pitch in) and hire Mac a nanny for Wednesday nights and Thursday mornings so we can still get the full review.

I actually like the reviews better then the shows lately! I guess that should be a sign to the writers.

#34. Posted by: Killjackoff at January 24, 2007 9:19 PM

Mac - I LOVE your reviews of Lost and always look forward to reading them on my lunch break on Thursdays. I understand your time crunch and I appreciate that you will still give us some of your time! You have me cracking up EVERY time I read your reviews. Thanks for keepin 'em coming!

#35. Posted by: Amy at January 30, 2007 12:48 PM

Mac, you're our "Lost" captain! So, "OH Captain, My Captain!" Why would we want to go anywhere else for our "Lost" fix?? I certainly couldn't entertain the thought!!! You do what you can, as you can and we all know it will be brilliant!!

Congrats on El Bambino!! You guys are on your own great journey of discovery now!! One of the greatest ever!! Embrace it! Enjoy it! And remember, whatever doesn't kill you, makes you stronger!
