Key Points from "Confirmed Dead"

Season 4, Episode 2
Episode Air Date: 02/07/08

Point 1
Jack

Kate

Sayid

Juliet

Faraday

Miles

The hooks just keep getting hookier.

In this week's episode, we take a quick look into the backstories of four new characters who will henceforth be known as "The Boaters" -- unless someone comes up with something better, which is likely.

We got our first glimpse of The Boaters at the conclusion of last week's episode when a skinny little man jumped from a helicopter and landed near Jack and Kate. At the time I thought the guy would be revealed as George Mitkowski -- the disembodied voice from the satellite phone. As usual, I was wrong.

The skinny dude's name is Dan Faraday. He hails from Essex, Mass. and he's a physicist. He's also a snappy dresser who likes to wear thin black ties and dress shirts while parachuting onto mysterious tropical islands.

As we saw last week, Dan meets up with Jack and Kate and as this episode opens they all exchange pleasantries ("Hi, nice to meet you ... sorry about that plane crash thing") and then set out to find the remainder of Dan's team. The Boaters were scattered across the island when their helicopter was hit by lightning. Fortunately, the Boaters are equipped with super-slick GPS trackers and satellite phones, so finding the wayward people is as simple as following a beeping dot on a screen.

Jack and Kate immediately sense that Dan's a little ... off. He mumbles and seems to live in his own little physicist world (at one point he remarks on the weird light patterns on the island). Dan is also carrying a loaded gun, so his weirdness has a dash of danger, and Jack and Kate aren't too enthused. Nonetheless, they opt to help Dan find his missing teammates because Jack and Kate haven't had a lives-dangling-in-the-balance island adventure for at least 12 hours.

The the trio follows a beeping dot on their satellite phone and they soon find Boater No. 2 sprawled out on the sand-swept beach rocks on a distant side of the island (this is the same location where Desmond accidentally killed Kelvin). Jack's spidey sense kicks into gear when he sees an unconscious body in need of fixing, but as he approaches his patient, Boater No. 2 springs to life and points a gun at Jack's chest.

And this is when we meet Miles Straum. Of all the Boaters, Miles has the most interesting vocation: he's a ghost whisperer. No joke.

Miles' unique ability is immediately put to the test because he demands to be taken to Naomi's now-fully-dead body. Miles is a wee bit pissed about Naomi's death because her dying message -- "tell my sister I love her" -- was a warning code. Naomi tipped her team off and now Miles wants to get the inside scoop on Naomi's death from Naomi's whispy spirit. The gun Miles is pointing at Jack's chest puts Jack in an agreeable mode.

So Miles, Dan, Jack and Kate tromp off so Miles can ghost whisper Naomi's corpse. Upon arriving, Miles leans over the departed Naomi and summons the immortal power of Jennifer Love Hewitt. He soon confirms that Jack and Kate's explanation (Locke killed Naomi) is true.

And this is when Jack finally has something go his way. Naomi's spirit message reduces the Island Tension Index to a reasonable level, so Jack takes the opportunity to tell Miles and Dan to lower their guns and take a big ol' chill pill. Miles -- who's a real charmer -- asks Jack why he would ever do such a thing and Jack quickly notes that both he and Dan are, at this very moment, positioned within the sights of two hidden guns held by two hidden members of Team Jack.

"How stupid do you think I am?" Miles scoffs.

CLICK CLICK

Sayid and Juliet emerge from the brush, clutching rifles.

"I dunno Miles ... how stupid are you?" Jack snaps.

POINT JACK!

With the upper hand wedged firmly into the waistband of Team Jack's pants, the now-expanded group heads off to find the third member of the Boater crew: Charlotte Lewis.

Charlotte, an anthropologist by trade, hails from England and likes to spend her free time digging up Dharma polar bear skeletons in the sands of Tunisia (let that sink in -- Charlotte's backstory shows her digging up a polar bear skeleton that's wearing a Dharma collar ... in Tunisia. What ... the hell ... is going on?).

Unfortunately for Charlotte, Team Jack is a little late to the rescue party. She is found and incarcerated by Team Locke (more on this in Key Point 2).

With Charlotte snared in a Lockian web, Team Jack turns its attention to the fourth and final Boater: Frank Lapidus.

Frank is a pilot, but in recent months he's been soaking up sun and island rum in the Bahamas because soul-crushing guilt clipped his wings. And here's the interesting part: the guilt comes from Frank's association with Oceanic 815. Frank was supposed to be the doomed title character in Charlie's rock epic, "The Monster Eats the Pilot." More importantly, Frank was friends with the substitute pilot -- Seth Norris -- and when deep-sea footage of the Oceanic crash shows up on TV (more on that in Key Point 3), Frank notices that the bloated corpse of the Oceanic pilot is missing a wedding ring. Seth Norris was a lot of things, but that man never took off his ring.

All the amazing conjecture about the real Oceanic 815 vs. the Ocean Trench Oceanic 815 will have to wait a bit, because there are two additional Team Jack developments we need to cover.

The first development involves Team Jack's procurement of a fully-functional helicopter. The group discovers the helicopter moments after finding Frank sitting in a lush island meadow, looking at island cows. Frank may be a borderline alcoholic with guilt issues, but he's one hell of a pilot. Amidst a lightning storm -- a storm that forced three Boaters to bail from the helicopter -- he managed to set the chopper down with only a few dings and dents. And that means the castaways now have a viable escape vehicle ... as long as Locke doesn't blow it up.

Discovery of a helicopter is pretty impressive, but the final Team Jack development bends that chopper revelation over its knee and smacks it 'till it's red and shiny.

The Big revelation comes after Frank and Juliet introduce themselves and Frank immediately realizes that Juliet was never on Oceanic 815 (he's memorized the passenger list). "She's a native!" Frank shouts to Miles.

And that's when Miles reveals the real reason the Boaters have spent all this time, money and energy searching for the island. They've come for one thing. Actually, they've come for one man.

Miles yanks a photograph out of his shirt pocket.

It's Ben! They're looking for Benjamin Linus!

Point 2
Locke

Sawyer

Ben

Hurley
At the conclusion of last week's episode, Team Locke began the long journey to the Other barracks. In this episode, that journey takes a few detours.
  • Detour 1 -- Locke informs Sawyer and the rest of the group that they need to make a pit stop at "a cabin." Sawyer is immediately frustrated/angered/confused by this revelation. Hurley, however, notes that the "cabin" is in another direction. Suddenly, the subcutaneous Jacob Tracking Systems installed within the scalps of Locke and Ben whir to life as they both realize that Hurley has seen Jacob's secret lair. I imagine we'll be learning a lot more about Hurley's special island connection in subsequent episodes.

Detour 1 also involves a very interesting revelation on Locke's part. He tells Sawyer that a "taller" version of Walt appeared to him as he lay bleeding to death in the Dharma Death pit (we saw part of this exchange). Tall Ghost Walt (TGW) told Locke that Naomi and the Boaters are up to no good and Locke needs to stop them.

Sawyer scoffs at Locke's story, noting that Locke looks pretty good for a guy who recently got shot. And this when the writers pull off a tricky stunt that reminds us all that they are very, very smart people.

Locke lifts his shirt and reveals two bullet holes -- one in his torso and the other in his back. The bullet from Ben's gun went clear through him.

"I'd probably be dead if I still had a kidney there," Locke notes.

    Seriously. How awesome is that?

  • Detour 2 -- The cabin expedition is put on hold when Team Locke stumbles upon Charlotte (Boater No. 3). Initially Charlotte is happy to have survived her perilous choppper ride and subsequent "rescue" at the hands of Team Locke, but it quickly becomes apparent that Locke and his frowning friends aren't going to welcome her with open arms.

Charlotte discovers the full crappiness of her situation when she sees a flare zip into the sky (it's from Frank, the helicopter pilot). She tells Locke she's going to pursue it and Locke can't stop her because that's her friend and she's ...

    BLAM! BLAM!

Charlotte is interrupted mid-sentence by two bullets from a gun in Ben's hand. The ever-tricky bug man somehow stole a gun from Karl (why does Karl have a gun?) and plugged two shots into Charlotte's chest!

Fortunately for Charlotte, her guest appearance will last longer than one episode because she's wearing a bullet proof vest (way to be prepared, Char).

  • Detour 3 -- Technically, Detour 3 is a continuation of Detour 2, but it's such a lovely scene I felt it deserved its own bullet point.

In the moments after Ben drilled Charlotte's vest with bullets, Sawyer and Locke push Ben against a tree and prepare to do away with the meddlesome Mr. Linus once and for all.

Ben woos Locke with the prospect of "answers" and "information." Locke tests him with a simple question -- What is the monster? -- but Ben blinks and claims he doesn't know what it is (for some reason, I believe him). Locke cocks the gun and prepares to send Ben to Jacob's Cabin the Sky, but the ever-sly Benry saves his hide by revealing a stunning amount of information about Charlotte and her Boater friends. He rattles off names and birthdays and hometowns and professions with ease, which suggests he knows much, much more.

    Locke pulls back.

"How do you know all this?" Locke asks.

Ben darts his tongue over his buggy eyeball.

"Because I have a man on their boat," Ben exclaims with glee.

    And that's when it ends!

Point 3
Hurley I honestly don't know what to think about this episode's big Oceanic 815 revelation.

In the opening moments, we see undersea footage that shows a big ol' Oceanic plane sitting on the bottom of the Indian Ocean. News reports sprinkled throughout this episode claim that the wreckage is from Oceanic 815 and, more importantly, everyone on board died.

But the mystery goes even deeper.

In a short backstory scene, we see Naomi (then alive) meeting with Matthew Abbadon -- the Oceanic lawyer who visited Hurley in last week's futureflash. The two discuss a secret effort to find the island with the help of a special team made of the four new characters introduced this week. But this scene feels like one small piece in a larger puzzle.

As it stands, the connection between the Oceanic 815 that crashed on the island and the Oceanic 815 sitting at the bottom of the ocean is unclear. Was there a space/time rift? Did they go through a worm hole? Or, is the ocean plane an elaborate ruse? And what does Ben have to do with all this?

All of it makes my head hurt (in a really good way).

Point 4
Island A few closing questions and observations:
  • Best Line: "Suuure, who are we to argue with taller ghost Walt?" -- Sawyer to Locke
  • Second Best Line: "You mind tellin' us who you're gettin' your orders from Col. Kurtz?" -- Sawyer to Locke
  • Vincent must be part cockroach. That dog is the island's ultimate survivor.
  • Speaking of Vincent, can anyone recall the last time we saw him? All I can remember is way back at the beginning of season two when Shannon was taking care of him.

That's all I've got!

Be sure to drop by the "Lost" Forum for stimulating conversation and conjecture.

Next Episode:
"The Economist" -- Team Locke launches an international finance publication from the Other barracks (and Locke takes a hostage). Airs Thursday, Feb. 14, 2008 at 9 p.m. on ABC.

Review by Mac Slocum. All photos and episode descriptions © ABC Inc.

Awesome recap, Mac! I sometimes get distracted during the show, thinking "How is Mac going to make sense of all this?" And you did it in a mere two hours. Seriously, I salute you.

"Ben darts his tongue over his buggy eyeball." That line alone was worth me being extra tired tomorrow.

Vincent was in last week's episode, briefly. I'd have to go back to look for it, but I do remember seeing him.

And may I mention my favorite Benry-ism of the night? With sarcasm dripping from every word and a sly, dismissive head-shake, "Karl. Since you're sleeping with my daughter, I think you can call me Ben."

Now I need more time to process all this. Night, all!

ok...I don't have tivo or DVR so I come here to find out the details.

However, I watched last weeks episode (again) at 8 and it was definitely Patchy's eye at the cabin. That guy has 9 lives.

Kudos to the people who said that "Tell my sister I love her." was an alert to her crew.

Also, did you see Ben and Locke's response when Hurley said they were going the wrong way to the cabin?...ooooo

#2. Posted by: Charlies_not_dead at February 8, 2008 12:25 AM

Glad to have you back Mac, even if it's in abridged form. This episode was outstanding, it answered a lot of the questions concerning episode 1. Couple observations, what the hell is Oceanic 815 doing in the Indian Ocean??? and being showed with a westward track towards Africa or India (???) in the TV graphic. When we know full well it was heading east from Sydney to Los Angeles and crashed somewhere in the Pacific. Wouldn't the friends and family know their loved ones were heading to LAX.

#3. Posted by: unladenswallow at February 8, 2008 12:32 AM

hmm. So maybe the "they" that Abbadon was asking Hurley about are in fact the Boaties, and not the other survivors. If that's that case, then maybe the Oceanic 6 leave the island a lot sooner than I thought, maybe even this half season.

Somehow, the 4 boaties all seem pretty sure that the Oceanic 815 wreckage is fake. Dunno how they would know that, but hopefully we'll find out soon.

#4. Posted by: your linus at February 8, 2008 12:35 AM

Is it just me or has this been the best start to any of the seasons so far? Ben is gonna save everyone at the end of this crazy series! Mark my words...

#5. Posted by: JoeyJohn1978 at February 8, 2008 1:01 AM

No, it's not just you, it's like six people. Oh... nevermind, yeah it's just you.

#6. Posted by: LockeBox at February 8, 2008 1:09 AM

The voice on the submarine footage says they're following the heading "137" from "our guy's map." Wasn't that the same heading Ben gave Michael?

Except that ought to be in a completely different location, since the wreckage was found off Indonesia.

#7. Posted by: LockeBox at February 8, 2008 1:27 AM

Thanks for the great review Mac!

In answer to your question about Vincent, I think we saw Vincent in Season 3 at least once. I remember him carrying a skeletal arm bone to Hurley. The arm bone I think was what led Hurley to find the VW Bus with Roger Workman (Ben's dad) and the stash of Dharma Beer.

#8. Posted by: Christine at February 8, 2008 1:28 AM

Of course when I say Flight 815, I mean the fake one. Who would have the resources to drop a commercial aircraft down into a three-mile deep ocean trench on the wrong side of Australia. I'm guessing someone with pretty deep pockets and a desire to hide the island. Charles Widmore anyone??? Wouldn't be surprised if the oceanographic survey team was sent there by the same person and/or organization to discover it by "accident"

#9. Posted by: unladenswallow at February 8, 2008 1:32 AM

Clementine & Mac:

We did see Vincent in the last episode when they were choosing teams (team Jack and team Locke) someone walked to Locke's group with Vincent, but it was not clear who it was who was leading Vincent.

#10. Posted by: Christine at February 8, 2008 1:33 AM

Anyone notice any "HO"s in this episode? None leaped out at me on a first viewing.

LOL @ LockeBox!

>The skinny dude's name is Dan Faraday. He hails from Essex, Mass. and he's a physicist. He's also a snappy dresser who likes to wear thin black ties and dress shirts while parachuting onto mysterious tropical islands.

Perhaps his real name is Bond, James Bond. He only needs the cummerbund.

More evidence.

>And this is when we meet Miles Straum.

I first thought he introduced himself as "Maelstrom".

Wasn't it more like KAPOW! KAPOW!?

o-----------------

>(why does Karl have a gun?)

He gave the beachies his gun (that Alex gave _him_) in the S-3 finale to help repulse the Others' Sabine women raiding party. Jin used it to shoot (and miss) at the dynamite. I guess, invasion being over, the beachies politely gave it back to him.

o-----------------

>Speaking of Vincent, can anyone recall the last time we saw him? All I can remember is way back at the beginning of season two when Shannon was taking care of him.

S-3-10 "Tricia Tanaka is Dead" Vincent brings Hurley Roger Workman's hand, complete with VW key chain, leading him back to the hippie van.

S-3-14 - "Exposé" Vincent sniffs around the Paolikki "bodies", pulling the blanket off them.

Those are the last two I recall.

o-----------------

It's not just you, JoeyJohn1978 / 5 thru 11. It's a great start. But could you ease off a little on that post button, please? It just takes a while. Wait for it.

o-----------------

@Mac: Not to complain, or anything, but could you maybe resume posting the review at Noon? This is keeping me up entirely too late.

o-----------------

THE NUMBERS ARE BACK!

The helicopter (US registered) has a tail number of N842N.
There's no actual aircraft with this tail number (I checked the FAA registry).

o-----------------

What's with the difference of directions to the cabin? Does it move around? Is there more than one? Is either Locke or Hurley mistaken? Or was Locke in fact taking them somewhere else?

o-----------------

Went back to last week and watched the 'lawyer' Abbadon exit from the mental institution after Hurley became excited/upset. There's a quick flash that could be just dark lighting on a very dark man in a dark suit, but I swear there's more than a auggestion of smoke monster gliding out the door.

o-----------------

Covert op? WTH? (Heck)

Tunesia?

Inglewood?

I'm beginning to feel like I'm watching the opening scenes of "Close Encounters..."

So I guess I was wrong about not having a boat-centric episode. But hey, at least the Lost writers and I both felt the show was lacking decomposing bodies. And, I am happy that Sawyer and Locke finally asked Ben some questions that we are asking. This episode really made me feel that the writers aren't going to give us some supernatural explanation.

#14. Posted by: Raider at February 8, 2008 3:18 AM

I thought this episode was great -- more like a season opener than last week's with more "wow" moments... new characters...the Dharma bear in Tunisia... the plane at the bottom of the ocean, complete with bodies. A couple of other thoughts:

- Who wants to bet that Naomi is not dead yet?

- Ben hasn't been having much luck killing people lately, has he?

(This is my first post-- I started watching lost a year ago on DVD and found your blog, Mac, during season 3. Great work! Now I can finally watch season 4 live!)

#15. Posted by: Frogurt at February 8, 2008 6:36 AM

Col. Kurtz. I loved that line! ;-)

I can't believe they took their eyes off Ben for a minute.

#16. Posted by: Speedmaster at February 8, 2008 6:43 AM

Where is Richard??

Has anyone seen him?

Is he the "I've got a man on their boat" that Ben is stuttering about?

#17. Posted by: Sillygirl0630 at February 8, 2008 6:54 AM

Seriously... is this guy's name really ABADDON?

That's quite corny.

Abaddon can mean anything from destruction to hell to angel of death.

Oh wait. This guy's name is spelled Abbadon in stead of Abaddon. So I'm probably wrong.

#18. Posted by: SnakeJake at February 8, 2008 7:03 AM

Great episode - great recap! Can't wait to see how it all unfolds...

Wondering what Penny will do after her contact with Charlie. Surely she won't just go back to whatever she was doing before he buzzed in.

#19. Posted by: equeyaya at February 8, 2008 7:08 AM

Thanks Mac, you're really the best!

I'm writing from Lisboa, Portugal, and I was trying to wait until I see episode 2 but I couldn't resist to read your amazing review.

I'm a big Lost fan (since day one!) that can only rest after reading it.

Resting the body because the mind keeps working and working and working with all these new developments! Ai!...

Best show on Earth! And in The Island too :)

"Hi, nice to meet you ... sorry about that plane crash thing" - reminded me when Charlie met Claire.

Até para a semana!

#20. Posted by: PreacherOnun at February 8, 2008 7:32 AM

I think you missed two huge points:

1. We have every reason to believe the "original" pilot -- the missing wedding ring I think is a giveaway that this wreckage was staged.

2. The reason the four non-Naomi freighters were all so shaken by the plane's crash is that they were *all supposed to be on it.*

Q: Could Michael be Ben's mole on the boat?

#21. Posted by: Lex at February 8, 2008 7:33 AM

Great review Mac, as always. My wife and I noticed that of the "Boaties", when each of them heard the news of the discovery of 815, Dan seemed EXTREMLY freaked out, almost to the point of tears, and none of the others did...any thoughts folks?

What about the silver box Jack found in the Jungle that contained the Biohazard bags and respirators?

Who was the grandson that was murdered that Jennifer Love Hew..oh wait, sorry, Miles was communicating with at the lady's house?

Also, I have noticed in this episode, that Ben is a master manipulator, trying to get into Karl's head, ruffling Sawyers feathers and somehow staying alive by just managing to give enough information to keep himself useful to Team Locke.

@ Mac~ how did you miss the greatest line in the episode (Sawyer to Ben)"you're wastin' your time... YODA! ha ha ha!

This show is making my head hurt. Does anyone else feel like that?

#24. Posted by: GatorGal at February 8, 2008 8:19 AM

By any chance did anyone notice the woman who was with Charlotte at the polar bear site? She bears a striking resemblence of the woman who denied Jack his prescription in the pharmacy in the finale.

#25. Posted by: marlisa at February 8, 2008 8:26 AM

Great recap as always Mac.

First off, I come bearing the gift of crow for myself and others to eat. Last week I was SURE that damn eye in the cabin was Locke, but it obviously wasn't. I'm still not sure who it was.

Was anyone else puzzled as to the how the backstory of Dan relates to why he was on Black Rock Down??? The back stories for the other four made a little more sense, but we just see weepy Dan crying at some crash footage. Weird.

I loved the episode, but I'm starting to get a little worried that this is going to turn into the beggining of season 3 where they just pelt us with new things we need answers too, and not reveal much else. It really has me concerned because there is only eight episodes, so if they planned to have a big reveal episode in the middle of the season, we'll have to wait a whole year (at least) for some answers.

When they showed the "pilot" of Oceanic 815, was that actually him. I thought it was a completly different guy from the pilot (no pun intended) episode where he's beaten to death by Smokey? Or was that guy the co-pilot?

Did anyone watch the "Introduction Film for the Orchid" feature on the season 3 DVD? Maybe that explains about Patches nine lives???

#26. Posted by: The Other Other at February 8, 2008 8:33 AM

I remember reading a while back in an interview with Michael Emmerson that quoted him as saying how thriled he was to be playing the part of Ben, especially isnce it was originally only a guest appearance.

If that is so, then is he not as pivotal as we would think? Or have the prodcuers had some kind of "revelation" since introducing Ben and worked to make him more of a primary character (which he obviously is).

Kinda brings up the whole arguement of "we have a huge, bigger-than-you-can-imagine" plan -vs- "we're winging it as we go along" schools of thought. Hmmm...

#27. Posted by: GatorGal at February 8, 2008 8:41 AM

Hey, Folks...
I think the new under-sea plane is truely a hoax, the footage clearly shows the cock pit. Now we know in season one the pilot is eatin up by the black smoke monster,it pulled him from the cock-pit which was in a tree,or am i wrong. GREAT RE:cap as usual.

#28. Posted by: T -spoon at February 8, 2008 8:48 AM

“He mumbles and seems to live in his own little physicist world (at one point he remarks on the weird light patterns on the island).”

I believe this statement will be BIG when we get the answer to where the island is. If you have seen the Disney movie Atlantis you will remember something like this. A team of hand picked experts (Boaters) are assembled to find the lost city of Atlantis. They are in a submarine that is to go into a canyon (where Oceanic 815 is) which leads to a cave that will then get them to Atlantis. When they get there, they find a world under the ocean that has a power source that has a weird light pattern.

#29. Posted by: micHael at February 8, 2008 8:49 AM

@3men: I think the grandson is nobody we've met. It was just a scene meant to show that Miles can talk to the dead. Even dead heroin dealers.

My guess for the respirators is that they expected another gas attack. We've seen that twice from Ben. (The original kill off and leaving Kate behind in the compound.)

I'm with the BANG BANG too.

I thought the Boaties were more like the A-Team, everyone had a specialty. It looks like Mr. T/Naomi (muscle) is out of the picture already.
Hannibal/Miles: in charge
Faceman/Charlotte: Brains
Murdock/Dan: crazy mumbler

I was very disappointed to see the ghost whisperer show up. His 'power' seems genuine to the story and allows all the supernatural possibilities to enter the program.

Great review Mac! I just want to say, I totally called Naomi's, "Tell my sister I love her," message as a code.

I wrote it last week on the message board. It was post 103 on last weeks message board. I am so smart, S.M.R.T....oops I mean A.R.T.

as lost likes to throw hints with the names of the characters...

'faraday' as per wiki:

Michael Faraday, FRS (September 22, 1791 – August 25, 1867) was an English chemist and physicist (or natural philosopher, in the terminology of that time) who contributed to the fields of electromagnetism and electrochemistry.
(although dan not michael)

has anyone done an anagram of Miles?

overall good episode and id like to 'think' that the writers give a nod to the fans by directly answering questions that we want to know about.

also - about the bio suits.. similar/same to what desmonds partner/ets was wearing in previous seasons.

well done on recap

#34. Posted by: lostsox at February 8, 2008 9:15 AM

loved last nights episode, definitely one of those episodes where you wish you could fast forward through the commericals. :)

if anyone had any doubts before, i think it was obvious that the eyeball from last weeks episode wasnt locke's. the eye was brown and locke has blue eyes.

cant wait to find out exactly why ben would command such a secretive and top notch mission. the picture miles had of ben had him in the surroundings of what appeared to be an office environment, so when was the picture taken and what was been doing??

miles is obvioulsy a hot-head and will definitley give the losties hell as they try to unravel the exact nature of the "freighties" mission.

and what's up with george not being able to come to the phone when miles called him, or was it dan that called him??

peace to all,

tiffani

#35. Posted by: tiffani at February 8, 2008 9:17 AM

Did everyone else miss the point of the line where Dan says "the light is different DOWN here" or did I hear it wrong? I think it's more evidence that they're not necessarily on the surface.

BTW, speaking of eating crow, I'm on board with the concept that the 815 at the bottom of the ocean is possibly staged and my idea of their existing in two places at the same time is likely wrong. But I still stand by the idea that they likely are not anywhere near where we think they are (North Pole, perhaps? or at least through the North Pole to get to them?) and that they might not even be on the surface or in the same existence as we are.

Great post, Mac. Great episode.

#36. Posted by: LostedIt at February 8, 2008 9:19 AM

Mac come on man. Those were your two funniest lines???

The funniest line ever throughout the entire series was Sawyers:

"What? And you didn't ask any follow up questions?!?!"

Seriously I had to stop the show and laugh it off for about 6-7 minutes.

anyone notice that the pilot they showed on TV -- Seth Norris -- was Matt the cop who can read minds from Heroes? Wonder if that was an easter egg or just a coincidence.

#38. Posted by: mattmak54 at February 8, 2008 9:25 AM

Did anybody check into the 1-888 number that was shown in the news footage of the dead fake pilot? Is it a real number?

Remember when those big random drops of supply came by air to the island a season or two ago? I wonder if/how that ties into this?!

You are right Mac "Cockroach Quailties for Vincent"..i was thinking the same thing. I swear last year i saw footage of Vincent at Mike Vick's old house... can't get rid of that dog.Maybe they the Losties can write a note attach it to Vincent's collar and throw him in the ocean,he's bound to wash-ashore somewere alive & well.
And last night i could almost hear Hurley say, "dude i left darma bread crumbs leading away from Jacob's cabin, trust me it's that way".

I was wondering if anyone else noticed the picture Miles showed of Ben. He is in what looks like an office computer room in like a suit. I am wondering where they got that picture from if he has been on the island his entire life. I thinking maybe he hasnt been...

#42. Posted by: Melissa at February 8, 2008 9:36 AM

What if the “backstories” on the 4 boaters were actually forward flashes? I don’t have DVR to watch the episode over to disprove it so I want to throw it out there and see what people had to say.

Jack makes it clear to Hurley while playing basketball that they are not allowed to revel the “truth” So maybe that holds true to the 4 boaters after they leave the island.

Boater #1 - Dan Faraday was crying when he saw the footage of the plane under water because he knows they are still alive.
Boater #2 – the “would-be pilot” can’t tell how he knows that the pilot shown in the crash under water is not his friend that was flying the plane so he points out the wedding band so it shows that he has a reasonable explination for saying that it is not the pilot.
Boater #3 – she discovers the polar bear in the desert after being on the island and that is why she recognizes the DHARMA logo and doesn’t seemed surprised that the polar bear was in the desert because she knew that a polar bear was found on the island as well (I know this hasn’t been shown, but this theory is under the assumption that the Losties reveal the polar bear incident to her sometime during her stay on the island.

Just some thoughts I had, thought not completely worked out.

#43. Posted by: Jen at February 8, 2008 9:43 AM

For sure - they were future-stories. Surprised to see that anyone thought them to be backstories.

#44. Posted by: JT at February 8, 2008 9:50 AM

@Jen: I don't think they were flashforwards because we see that Naomi was supposed to gather the team and now she is dead. Abbadon tells her that they each have their specialty and use.
Perhaps George is Abbadon?

One big question is are the Boaties/A-Team looking for Ben or Hunting for him?

#45. Posted by: PiecesofArzt at February 8, 2008 9:53 AM

What a fascinating crew of people from the freighter. A physicist, a ghostbuster, an anthropologist, a pilot, and...an enforcer? Naomi was probably key to their mission, so odds of success are already looking bad. And just what is their mission? To 'get' Ben Linus? (Dead or alive?) Naomi also had a picture of Desmond--another target?

The only person who might have been looking for Desmond besides Penny would have been her dad Charles Widmore. What's the Widmore-Dharma connection? Was Widmore running the operation on the island before the purge, and is looking for payback from Ben?

Also thought it was interesting that Charlotte the anthropologist has the initials "C. S. Lewis" (Charlotte Staples Lewis!) Any polar bears in Narnia?

#46. Posted by: mim at February 8, 2008 9:53 AM

Boy, things seem to be really flying along. Two points which interested me. When Charlotte was excavating the Polar Bear skeleton in the desert, was that Sayid's long lost love assisting Charlotte? I couldn't remember, but she did look familiar.

I like the Abbadon character. He's a great creepy mysterious villian type, and now since Ben has lost much of his control and edge (I don't like this new wimpier version) Abbadon has filled that spot well.

My second item of interest was the conversation (was it Naomi and Abbadon) about "what do we do if we run into 815 survivors?" I thought was very interesting too. Really made me wonder why they suspected 815 survivors would be involved in their mission to the island.

As always, enjoyed the review and comments.

Thanks Mac

#47. Posted by: petew at February 8, 2008 9:55 AM

OK This effing episode is really really threw me off. If Benry has a man on their boat, he obviously knew they were coming, but how, if this all happens like three hours before at the communications tower where Naomi is killed?
Dahrma Polar bears in Tunisia, What's that all about???.
There seems to be some sort of know-it-all way that Benry has that we are totally unaware of. And who the heck is that Abaddon dude? he's really freaky by the way.
Taller Walt/Jacob Ghost??? So does this mean Walt and Micheal are dead?
Each sees Jacob as they see fit to see him, Ben as Jacob, Kate as a horse, Locke as Walt, Jack as his Dad, etc....
This season is getting real good.
Mac loved the post man!

@ JT 44 - Well, Naomi's was clearly a flashback. what makes you so sure they're flash forwards?

#50. Posted by: your linus at February 8, 2008 9:57 AM

@#9 In missing pieces the Maxwell Groupe, who are the people running the search (for the Black Rock!?!) and stumble upon the wreckage (via the same boat the Christine 1) are a division of Widmore according to there letterhead

@#20 -2 Really nice analysis. I think your right or they new someone on it. What I can't figure out is how and why they were recruted to join this team to find Ben...

How about that polar Bear in Tunesia...Another Dharma testing ground or did it travel through space (and time if Tunesia is where the Island use to be...)

Also, for me, the only people that could logicaly be looking for Ben are DHARMA (and I think they're pissed for the killing of all their people and taking over the island thing...)

Another "weird" moment was when Miles called on the phone and whoever it was he wanted to talk to was "to busy" to come to the phone...WTF IS UP WITH THAT!!!

Covert op, recruted outsiders, Island found, they get the call and Miles has to go through a call screening receptionist!!! I just don't get it. The only reasonable explination would be that there's something even more important going on...

That's all for now

BTW Sawyer called me Huckelberry Pinhead

Faraday - How is everyone missing this?

A Faraday cage or Faraday shield is an enclosure formed by conducting material, or by a mesh of such material. Such an enclosure blocks out external static electrical fields. Faraday cages are named after physicist Michael Faraday, who built one in 1836.

An external static electrical field will cause the electrical charges within the conducting material to redistribute themselves so as to cancel the field's effects in the cage's interior. This effect is used, for example, to protect electronic equipment from lightning strikes and other electrostatic discharges.

To a large degree, Faraday cages also shield the interior from external electromagnetic radiation if the conductor is thick enough and any holes are significantly smaller than the radiation's wavelength. For example, certain test procedures of electronic components or systems that require an environment devoid of electromagnetic interference may be conducted within a so-called screen room. These screen rooms are essentially labs or work areas that are completely enclosed by one or more layers of fine metal mesh or perforated sheet metal. The metal layers are connected to earth ground to dissipate any electric currents generated from the external electromagnetic fields, and thus block a large amount of the electromagnetic interference. This application of Faraday cages is explained under electromagnetic shielding.

I think the person in the coffin is Abaddon – I think he will soon be playing a big role in the series. It’s resonable to assume that some time has passed since Abaddon's visit to Hurley in the psych ward and Jack's visit to the funeral parlor. I think we will soon be learning alot more about him.

#53. Posted by: Jen at February 8, 2008 10:16 AM

I also thought the scenes with the boaters could possibly be forward flashes.

The wreckage in the trench is definitely staged.

My wife thought that the woman with Charlotte at the excavation site looked like the woman Sayid was supposed to interrogate in S1.

Hurley would have been a great cameo on those Bud Light "dude" commercials.

How does Benry have someone on their boat ???? And if he is so worried about the boaters why not have his “man” sabotage the operation before they get to the island ??

#54. Posted by: cadams at February 8, 2008 10:24 AM

Just went back to watch the episode again. Did anyone else notice that Harold Perrineau and Fisher Stevens were listed in the opening credits??? Were they both in the episode somewhere and I just missed it. The series has always shown the names of the people that are on the particular episode outside of the main characters. Does this mean Michael is back for good, and who is Fischer Stevens character and how will he become a major player?

#55. Posted by: The Other Other at February 8, 2008 10:25 AM

@47 I too thought immediately of CSLewis (or Clive Staples Lewis). The first Narnia book is "the magicians nephew". In it Digory and Polly enter a wooded land of deep pools, which lead them to and from other worlds, including England and the birth of Narnia. Desmond's boat, Oceanic 815 and the Others seem to have reached the island through a portal. Perhaps the Lost island is like this intermediate place, but replace worlds with time. It then becomes a hub from which many time periods can be reached and returned from. Light was seen by Faraday (physicist) as being refracted unusually on the island, indicating there is still magnetic interference. Perhaps somehow Mittelos (who overtook Dharma) have lost their means of determining the unstable location of the island, which could be as a result of the hatch implosion. Otherwise, how do you explain why the rescuers could only get there until after the phone was recalibrated by Naomi. IMO the helicopter rescuers are expendable, and are only there to give Mittelos a constant location reading of this unusual island.

#56. Posted by: Loz at February 8, 2008 10:27 AM

Long time reader, first post. My theory is that the "boaters" have been recruited by or are related to dharma initiative and are working for the leaders of dharma that were off the island during the purge. They are after Ben because he is responsible for the mass killing of their people and the ruin of their presence on the island. When Ben destroyed dharma on the island, a lot of people lost a lot of money, loved ones, and their life's work. There are obviously people associated or leading dharma that did not die in the purge (Widmore), do we think they just gave up on the island?

#57. Posted by: Eric at February 8, 2008 10:31 AM

Just a thought about Miles and why he might have "known" the plane crash victims are not dead... If he can talk to Ghosts, and hires out his talest, perhaps the family members of a victim hired him to talk to the deceased, but he couldn't "find" them, thus knowing that they have not crossed over not the plane of ghostliness. Then again, his talent is not yet that clear... he was able to talk to the ghost of the grandson in his flash-back (or forward, I'm not sold either way yet), but in order to talk to Naomi, he had to be near the body.

#58. Posted by: sarah c at February 8, 2008 10:31 AM

Don't take the credits as a listing of as a who's in the episode. Daniel Dae Kim and Yunjin Kim are both listed and I don't remember seeing them the entire episode.

Fisher Stevens is listed as George Minkowski, the boat voice, at IMDB. I guess that ruins my Abaddon/George theory. He's one of those guys you'll proably recognize but not know his name.

#59. Posted by: PiecesofArzt at February 8, 2008 10:34 AM

The woman with Charlotte is NOT Nadia. I'm telling you that she is the woman in the pharmacy who refused to give Jack his refill.

#60. Posted by: marlisa at February 8, 2008 10:41 AM

Does anyone rember who Faraday talks to over the phone (the guy asks if he's on speaker) ?

On the same basis that they listed Fisher Stevens for George's voice, Michael could of only been "heard" in this epi...

#61. Posted by: One of the six at February 8, 2008 10:42 AM

New Theory Alert: Miles isn't a ghost whisperer. He just did that at the woman's house to create appearances. He can see the past like Desmond can see the future. But he has to be near the scene which is why he demanded to go to Naomi's body.

#62. Posted by: PiecesofArzt at February 8, 2008 10:43 AM

Wouldn't it be cool if Ben's informant on the boat is Annie, Ben's childhood friend. They never showed her being killed in the purge or have any indication that she didn't come over to otherhood with Ben.

#63. Posted by: MattS at February 8, 2008 10:44 AM

Did anyone else think Locke looked happy when he realized Hurley may have seen Jacob? It was in stark contrast to the look of panic that Ben had on his face.

The voice of George is clearly Fisher Stevens, of Short Circuit fame, who I can't wait to see; it's not Abbadon. I do like the idea that Abbadon might be the smoke monster, but it doesn't seem too likely that'll actually be the case.

I think the significance of the polar bear in Tunisia may relate to Atlantis. That area is one that was previously investigated by some as the mythical island's location. Why the skeleton - which would seem to be from our island - would be buried in the sand on the opposite side of the planet is a mystery though. Does this mean that the island actually is Atlantis, and that it moves?

I loved Sawyer's "And you didn't ask any follow up questions?!" line!!!

It is confusing that Naomi's initial story was that they were looking for Desmond but now we find out that Ben is their target. How are those two stories going to overlap?

#64. Posted by: MadamI'mAdam at February 8, 2008 10:47 AM

What an episode! An y'all thought we were crazy last week for talkin' French...

@JT and I think it was Jen...one way to see if the Boaters backstories were FF or FB would be to pause the frame on the newspaper Charlotte picks up in Tunesia...perhaps the date is on it?

I almost fell off the couch when Locke and Sawyer began talking about "taller ghost Walt"...what a way to address a question many of us have been asking in this forum since the second season...I loved Sawyer's line "Who are we to argue with "Taller Ghost Walt?!"

#65. Posted by: Vikki at February 8, 2008 10:47 AM

@ Three Man and a Baby #21 We also saw Charlotte reading the newspaper in Tunisia about the Oceanic crash/no survivors. Her companion says "How many languages do you need to read it in to believe it?" And she responds, "How many languages are there?" Obviously, she's invested somehow in the flight and doesn't believe they're all dead.

My thought about why they're after Ben: Retaliation for his killing of all the Dharma scientists. Ben told Locke when he took him to see the mass grave that 'not long ago' he killed them all. I'd figure, not long before the crash, so if they've been on the island 90-ish days and he killed off the others not long before that, the Boaties could just now be getting to the island. Especially if the island only became findable when the station w/ the magnetic problem blew up. I think the 'lawyer' Abaddon works for Dharma.

Just some initial thoughts...

#66. Posted by: Kristine at February 8, 2008 10:47 AM

Did anyone else think that the "man on their boat" that Ben claims to have is Jacob?

#67. Posted by: vacc at February 8, 2008 10:49 AM

Okay - MAJOR issue with the Oceanic 815 at the bottom of the sea thing. The footage showed a complete plane, all intact, with a pilot. WE know that the plane BROKE IN HALF and fell into different areas of the water/land, and that the pilot is dead (eaten). I am convinced that the footage is completely staged to give the families and friends of 815 passengers some closure and make the airline not look bad for stopping any search for survivors. Besides, the location of the footage is too near any other islands and civilization - there would be passing boats and planes seen from the island if they were actually that close to other land. Anyone with me?

#70. Posted by: Vikki at February 8, 2008 10:56 AM

Re: 55

Fisher Stevens is Minkowski, I think Harold Perrineau is just listed in every episode from now on because he is going to be a series regular again. There clearly is someone else on the freighter other than Minkowski who has some authority, although I don't see how Michael could be in charge of much of anything, unless it was in a Ripley-like (Aliens) advisory role. On to other points, I think the Oceanic 6 will be off the island by episode 8, which may or may not be the last episode of the season, depending on the writer's strike. I'm guessing episodes 9-16 are their attempts to get back there.

#71. Posted by: unladenswallow at February 8, 2008 11:01 AM

One more thing...I went back and watched the missing pieces clip where Ben and Jack are playing chess. It's in this scene that Ben tells Jack that the island won't let him leave if the island doesn't want him to and that if he does get off the island, Jack will one day want to return. At the time there was no reason to believe that what Ben was saying was anything less than a Benry manipulation move, but, according to this season's FFs, it does indeed want to/have to go back...

This led me to think about Miles' picture of Ben...didn't it look sort of out of place for what we know to be Ben's surroundings and environment here on the island? It looked to me like the picture wasn't taken at Club Others. What if the picture shows Ben working in some capacity OFF the island and his own warning was true for himself...that he felt like he had to go back too? And now the Boaters are after him for some reason because of what he did off the island? If Ben showed up on the island as a child and then we met him later in life, who's to say this couldn't have happened?

#72. Posted by: Vikki at February 8, 2008 11:11 AM

# 72 - I posted the same thing at post 42 and was wondering if anyone else thought the same thing. I think there was a period when in Ben's adult life he was off the island. He looked like he was working in some kind of office.

#73. Posted by: Melissa at February 8, 2008 11:14 AM

consider this..an airplane impacting the water at a couple hundred miles per hour but somehow comes to rest intact with a pilot sitting peacefully at the controls. The remote cameras show a debris field indicative of a slow gliding descent to the bottom. Any safety or accident investigator would recognize this immediately. Is this lazy production or are we supposed to recognize this as an obvious fake

I checked the screen caps of the pharmacy woman and the ones of Charlotte's friend and they are NOT the same person. Charlotte's friend looks like she is from India and has a mole on her left upper lip. The pharmacy woman has lighter skin color and no mole. They do look similar but not the same person.

#75. Posted by: micHael at February 8, 2008 11:36 AM

Wow! What an episode. I watched the underwater plane in slow motion and couldn't find anything. I also froze on the picture that the boaties had on Ben and it kind of looked like he was going through customs at the air port. I don't know.

Also, it is starting to seem like there is a time travel aspect to the show. What were they saying about how long the polar bear had been there?

I also rewatched the scene with Hurley and the scary guy and I just think it is a shadow (slowed it down on PVR).

I was set that they were flash forwards until Abaddon had the meeting with Nadia. If they are taking the time travel route, it would explain why they were so upset.

I am starting to wonder how much they plan on explaining by the end of the series, and what they are going to let go, ie the numbers.

Oh ya, I tried watching the numbers in the video of them discovering the plane, but didn't find anything.

Great Review Mac. Thank You

I had a few thoughts about last nights episode.

1. I think that Ben is in a wheel chair in the photo. Is he not? We still do not know the whole story behind that.

@#21 Lex
2. Yes, I too believe that we will find out that the 4 Boaters were all meant to be on flight 815.

3. Michael is so on the boat. How else were they going to reintroduce him to the show?

4. Do we know if Sayid knows how to fly a Helicopter? Think that the 6 leave with out any of the 4 boaters. With them already discussing weight issues how does Hurley end up as a choice.

5. I think the 6 will spend half the season on the boat.

Can't remember everything else at the moment.

Happy Friday all.

#84. Posted by: Bendjy at February 8, 2008 12:20 PM

I can’t remember if it was on season 1 or 2 DVD's, there was a deleted scene with the Pilot and Claire. He is trying to make her feel better about flying. He made a comment but his wedding ring, something like he was not trying to hit on her because he was married. Anyone remember this? This would tie in with what Frank is saying about his ring habit.

Ok, can we please, please, PLEASE stop with the "they're all dead, way-station between worlds" theory crap.

The plane in the Indian ocean is a fake!!!!!!

The underwater 815 is clearly staged, and the pilot shown on TV is clearly not the pilot who was actually on the island!! How can anyone who claims to be a fan of the show not be able to figure this out????

#87. Posted by: markthefish at February 8, 2008 12:26 PM

A couple of points no one has mentioned:

in answer to the question: "How many of there are you?" to the Freighter Four, both Dan and Charlotte answer exactly the same way: "Four, including myself." (forgive me if that isn't the exact text, but they did say the same line). I thought it interesting that they would have the exact same line--which seems to indicate coaching by someone--and why? Was there a 5th we know nothing about? Lost doesn't do that without reason, we know.

Although I am not really on the side of the flashforwards theory for the last episode, I do find it interesting that we don't have a DATE for the finding of the plane. Anyone see one? I checked out the screen cap of the Tunisian paper, but you can't see a date, and none of the broadcasts we saw seemed to have a date. Is that beacause the date would be in the past or the future as concerns our crew?

#88. Posted by: Noelle at February 8, 2008 12:31 PM

If your head doesn't hurt after this one (in a good way), there's something wrong with you! Mac, you just keep getting better. And so do all the other regular contributors here. I think we need to move from WGNABB to WNMC (We need more cowbell). Seriously, have we ever seen a cow on the island before???

#89. Posted by: lovelost at February 8, 2008 12:32 PM

Also, there is no way that the Boaters off-island scenes were flash-forwards.

They were flashbacks, exposition to give the viewer a little background into who these people are, and in most cases, there skill sets.

This is made abundantly clear by the scene where Lt. Daniels has the meeting with a still-living Naomi about leading the four on a mission to the island.

#90. Posted by: markthefish at February 8, 2008 12:32 PM

Something I don't think anyone brought up this week or last...how is Team Locke even getting to the barracks? They're on another island and there has been no mention of a boat unless they're using the boat that the raiding party used to come over and try to steal the women. I'm not even sure how many of them know that there are 2 islands.

#91. Posted by: browncoat fairy at February 8, 2008 12:37 PM

@ 90 markthefish: I completely agree that Noami's was obviously a flashback. However, since everyone's flash forward/back was shown in different segments then it could be possible that while Naomi's is a flashback doesn't necessarily mean that the other boaters flashes are as well. This show jumps so far back and forth that we are never really certain which came first.

@ 88 Noelle: good catch on the line "four, including myself" I thought the exact same thing. As I was watching it I thought it was odd that they both responded like that. Definately seems like a staged response.

#92. Posted by: Jen at February 8, 2008 12:52 PM

@ browncoat fairy/#91: FYI - the barracks are on the same island as the losties....the hydra station (where Jack, Kate & Sawyer were held) is on the other island.

Great episode!

I think that the Others saying "we're the good guys" might actually prove to be true. What if Ben is using his evil ways to save everyone?

I'm also in the time shift/portal theory. It would explain how Ben could have so much information (going to future) at his fingertips.

Does this Paulikki will rise from the grave??? yikes.

#94. Posted by: EthansGirl at February 8, 2008 1:06 PM

Just an FYI - I just finished watching the movie "Rescue Dawn" and I swear that one of the main characters is the same guy that plays Dan. The characters are the same - whacko, wild hand movements, muttering and mumbling, etc.

Strange.....

Anyone else see the movie?

#95. Posted by: Len at February 8, 2008 1:10 PM

@ browncoat-

The Barracks are on the main island. The wouldn't need a boat at all.

I think that the flashes were backward, simply because Naomi tells them at the end of last season that they have already found Oceanic 815 and there were no survivors.

POST 95 LEN ... yes, it is the same actor ... he was also in saving private ryan

#97. Posted by: mattmak54 at February 8, 2008 1:25 PM

The guns, the bullet proof vest, and the gas mask/hazmat suits from the helicopter --- very simple conclusion: the Boaters were aware of Ben's Purge because they were Dharma members killed by Ben. And Ben knows that when you kill someone in the afterlife, they don't die; they come back for revenge.

#98. Posted by: welh at February 8, 2008 1:26 PM

Dan's name is Jeremey Davies and he also played Charles Manson in Helter Skelter. I was a bit worried when I found out he was going to be on Lost, but he seems to be doing a great job. He has weird, eccentric, ....weird down to a science.

Well, and last season's finale, of course.

They're on another island and there has been no mention of a boat unless they're using the boat that the raiding party used to come over and try to steal the women. I'm not even sure how many of them know that there are 2 islands.

A. I believe they've all heard that now.

B. The barracks is on the main island, and is not the cage facility where Kate, Jack, and Sawyer spent the first half of majority of S-3, which was indeed on "Alcatraz" island. The barracks is the residential facility, on the main island as seen in the S-3 opener, and to which the "save JacK" party walked in "Enter 77" / "The man from Talahassee" last season.

Bonus - From the S-3 DVD's: The Hydra facility / cage set was an abandoned amusement park that was used just about as-is for for the dramatic events of season 3. Only the "bear cages" had to be added. Only negative factor was the facilty was overrun with feral chickens, which could interfere with some dramatic scenes...

(Pickett) "DO YOU WANT TO LIVE! WHY DON'I I JUST SHOOT YOU RIGHT NOW!"

(off set) "COCK-A-DOODLE DOOOOOO!"

(director) "Cut!. Chase the damned chickens away! OK. Action."

Miles visited the nice lady to communicate with her dead relative - a young man. This is Miles' flashback....so could it be that the young dead man was aboard 815? Did Miles learn from the young man about the crash? Do we have a name, and if so, is the name on the flight manifest?

Just pondering......

If Ben killed all the Dharma folks during the purge where did the Others come from? Who are these people, the ones that were in league with Alpert. And how did they get on the island? Could it be that they are survivors of another similar 'accident' years before? And will our 815'ers become the 'new' "Others".

Ohhh, the pain!

#104. Posted by: Len at February 8, 2008 1:49 PM

I forgot to mention above, the Darma colar that was found on the dead polar bear had a symbol. It was a Hydra right? Does this mean that there are multiple Hydra stations (bases) in different area's or that one of the Hydra bears made it to the dig site. How long did they say the bones had been there for? They had a conversation but I didn't catch it.

I think Fake flight 815 should be called Flight 518...

Umm, I don't think they would ever show ongoing footage of dead bodies in a wreckage on TV...

Did I miss a key question that people would be asking as they watched the news broadcast?

The fake Oceanic 815 was not found to be off course - it was headed in the wrong direction! That kind of course deviation had to begin after takeoff not just drift 1,000 miles off course somewhere on the way to LA.

Did anyone catch if this was even addressed? With all the press coverage that would be a question that would be repeating over and over.

#114. Posted by: Red...Neck...Man at February 8, 2008 2:38 PM

@ GatorGal

The producers might not tell the actor that the role will be bigger so they don't know or give anything away about the show. These types of shows do this all the time. M Night Shyamalan for example does this all the time with his scripts. Just a thought.

#115. Posted by: Lost Is Found at February 8, 2008 2:41 PM

@RNM: I considered a "Lawnmower Man" reference in the review, but since Jeff Fahey looks so much different than he did in the film I doubted anyone would get it. Shows you what I know ;)

BTW -- I once sat through the director's cut of that movie. The friggin' thing was three-plus hours of crappy animation.

@#107 Connie:

I totally agree. BIG clue to us that this is not real.

I think there is far more to Daniel Faraday than we are giving credit for. It's always those sneaky little sniveling ones that cause the biggest problems. (remember Henry Gale???) I for one am looking forward to the mind game competition between Benry and Daniel. Bring it on!!

Also, Frank mentioned making more than one run to bring Naomi back. Is that just a ploy to get the Losties off, or will there be multiple runs?

I'm looking forward to seeing what anagrams everyone comes up with for Miles Straum and Frank Lapidus. I liked the comment about Miles Straum sounding like Maelstrom - it would certainly fit!!

If the discovery of flight 815 is a staged cover-up, which it is appearing to be...then the Oceanic 6 don't
necessarily have to have been on the original flight. Could be a native or someone brought by sub...like Juliet.
Just requires lying about having been on 815.
This brings up a BIGGER question! As we saw, flight 815 was found(staged)...all passengers DEAD. So what is the explanation to the public about The Oceanic 6? Where did they come from?
Remember Ben has been off the island before. He was born in Oregon & brought by sub. The picture shown last night appears to be a bank or airport line.
Does Sayid know how to fly? Jack does!
In Season 1 he mentioned having taken some flying lessons....and they didn't take.
some thoughts!

Why wasn't there a Dharmashark nibbling on Char when she plunged in? Oh, it was freshwater so i guess it would'va been a Dharmagator or Dharmadile. Would have preferred that plot.

Loved "Kaaaarll", have replayed that line so many times already. Classic.

(Apolgies if mentioned already, haven't read everyone yet)it seems the find815.com story is a bit relavant. anyone agree. Which is brilliant/typical LOST, we all think to look east of Australia and they are actually West.

OMG, great minds think alike! I actually started singing the "ah ya yeh...ah ya" tune when that Tunisia scene was playing. (Ask trexl if you don't believe me cuz he was there, too.)

About Michael being the man on the boat, I don't think he's Ben's "plant." I'm sure he's on there because of the way Ben told him he would find "rescue" in the S2 finale. But, I think one of Ben's men was already on there, which is how Ben knew the exact compass bearing Michael needed to follow.

A great moment last night that no one's mentioned so far (and I read through all the posts so I know) is how the writers faked us out by having Miles follow Charlotte's GPS signal through the jungle, only to come upon it and realize it had been tied to Vincent. Very crafty! Point, Team Locke!

#125. Posted by: CC at February 8, 2008 4:11 PM

It is possible that Michael is on the boat but not Ben's 'mole'. It could be that he got picked up by them when escaping with Walt, and is either working with them on the boat or being held hostage. I couldn't see him still working with Ben after everything that happened.

#126. Posted by: db at February 8, 2008 4:12 PM

After rewatching this episode, I believe that Charlotte is Ben's "man on the boat." Here's why:

- She seemed to recognize the Dharma logo on the polar bear collar. Perhaps she was sent out "into the world" to check results of some island experiment.

- She seemed to know where to dig (by the head) and appeared to know what she was digging for. Hence, some previous knowledge of Dharma and their activities.

- She does not seemed fazed by Ben being dragged around on a leash. At all.

- Yes, Ben shoots her. But only where he knows she won't be truly hurt (in the Kevlar vest). He does not shoot her in the head or disable her by shooting her in the legs. This could be a move on Ben's part to remove suspicion from Charlotte and "hide" the fact that she is, in fact, his mole.

-- Ben says he has a "man on the boat." Charlotte is a woman, hence further removing suspicion from her.

- Finally, Charlotte did seem elated to be on the island and in the water. She was smiling and practically giddy. Looked very much like "I did it! Glad to be back" as opposed to "I'm scared to death/where's my team?"

Whatcha think?

#127. Posted by: GatorGal at February 8, 2008 4:29 PM

I agree with CC about the gps being on something else. It was a typical fake out in a movie/TV show. I thought boar too but wasn't shocked when it was Vincent.

One of the best lines of the show last night was between Kate and Jack.

Kate: "You could of warned me you know."

Along with several other posters, I enjoyed the C.S. Lewis allusion. Charlotte even has the same middle name as Clive Staples Lewis. I'm not sure if it will turn out to be significant, but this is a series that has spent a great deal of time contemplating the relationship between faith and reason, and C.S. Lewsis was one of the preeminent writers on the relationship between faith and reason in the 20th century.

Fortunate timing for Lost fans as it appears from recent news releases that a deal may have been stuck early in February with the WGA. If work resumes within a week, we could see new episodes of sitcoms and dramas within two months.

#135. Posted by: Hunter at February 8, 2008 5:22 PM

@127. Posted by: GatorGal
"After rewatching this episode, I believe that Charlotte is Ben's "man on the boat."

I think you're right, and I'd take that a step further, with help from another poster, perhaps she is Ben's childhood friend?

She did seem very "happy" to be there, and she did seem to not be phased at all by the polar bear and knew exactly what she was looking for.

I'd also like that put out there that I think Michael/Walt could an alternative "man on the boat". Ben said that Walt was very special, perhaps he is able to communicate with Ben from the boat somehow with his special-ness.

Also, is this perhaps the same freighter that Ben told Michael they would run into on the heading he gave them? Ben already knew the freighter was out there, and exactly where to find it.

#136. Posted by: lostdrew at February 8, 2008 5:23 PM

I am a long time reader and obsessed with the show and usually find all my ideas already posted but. I know someone else mentioned that they think Jacob is on the frieghter, this could be, because how else would Ben get "Jacob's List" of who has been naughty or who has been nice??. the people on the boat must know everything about the Losties to be ready if they make contact. Also i think Ben sent micheal and walt in the direction of the freighter on purpose because he doesnt want anyone leaving the island and he told his "mole" not to let them get away. George Minkowski must have something to do with the mole because why couldnt he get to the damn phone when his buddy miles wanted to chat. and one last thing is that the last time we saw Richard Alpert he was told by Ben to lead the others to "The Temple"????? another station or a freaky Indiana Jones temple of doom? and we saw Hurley walking with Vincent in S3 when they were hiking to the radio tower.
Best line of the entire show was Ben to Jack "Jack with your permission id like to go with Locke"

Thanks Mac your posts are as good as ever

I found this quote from the current Time magazine from the Bishop of Durham interesting:

"Our culture is very interested in life after death, but the New Testament is much more interested in what I've called the life after life after death — in the ultimate resurrection into the new heavens and the new Earth. Jesus' resurrection marks the beginning of a restoration that he will complete upon his return. Part of this will be the resurrection of all the dead, who will "awake," be embodied and participate in the renewal. John Polkinghorne, a physicist and a priest, has put it this way: "God will download our software onto his hardware until the time he gives us new hardware to run the software again for ourselves." That gets to two things nicely: that the period after death is a period when we are in God's presence but not active in our own bodies, and also that the more important transformation will be when we are again embodied and administering Christ's kingdom."

The interesting concept of life after life after death fits the Lost profile, especially when two of the new characters are a physicist and a spiritual medium.

4-2 (73) Confirmed Dead

Strangers with motives
Somewhat suspect... trust or not?
Ben the objective?

#139. Posted by: Cecil Rose at February 8, 2008 6:17 PM

WOW! Absolutley WOW!

First of all, thanks for a great and funny review, Mac.

B, no, 2, is this the first time we've ever seen a flashback of a person who is already dead? I know it was a "team" flashback, but Naomi's part of it occurred after the rigor had already set it.

Next, I wonder how much of "Point 2" was planned since last spring, or in response to fans? The wreckage in the trench thing has obviously been a part of the plan for a while, since Naomi mentioned it to Charlie last season, but the parts about Walt being taller and the bullet going through the kidney, was that a response to fan comments or part of the plan the whole time?

Finally, I am glad that the show is not wasting time with Paulikis and such, but immediately delving deeper into the mystery. The questions I was left with were:
- How much does Charlotte know about Dharma polar bears?
-Are any of the other "boaties" friends or family of the Oceanic crew/passengers? Or maybe of the Dharma initiative?
-Are they Dharma related, is that why they want Ben? If not, what did Ben do to them?
-Did Miles learn to speak with the dead from a Dharma experiment?
-And most importantly, when Abbadon asked Hurley alst week if they were still alive, did he mean the Others? The other passengers? Or di he mean the Boaties?!?

Somehow I wouldn't be surprised if Sayid gets the chopper going with 5 other Oceanic crash survivors on board and the Boaties are left behind...

#140. Posted by: FenwayBen at February 8, 2008 6:43 PM

Two big clues?

1) Bag of heroin: Miles does his ghostbuster routine in SoCal and he finds a bag of heroin behind the wall that the "spirit" leads him to (along with cash). You say heroin on LOST and I think of Charlie (user) and Eko (supplier). How does Miles, or the house he was in, fit into the equation, if there is one?

2) Big wad of cash: Along with the heroin was a big wad of cash. Makes sense if someone was dealing drugs. But, we also seem a similar wad of money in the hands of Charlotte. She used it to bribe her way into the Tunisia desert dig site and get carte blanche.

Are the two connected, or relevant?

#141. Posted by: DocH at February 8, 2008 7:20 PM

Is it just me or did the pictures on the dead grandson that Miles went to the house of look just like young Eko? Now I know that doesn't make any sense at all but I thought the resemblance was striking and was hoping to get some others to take another look and confirm or deny...

#142. Posted by: Yarney at February 8, 2008 7:21 PM

I noticed Locke told Sawyer that TGW (taller ghost Walt) told him he had to kill Naomi. Unless I am remembering incorrectly, didn't Walt tell Locke that he "had work to do"? I don't remember TGW mentioning Naomi...What the heck is Locke up to? Why lie? why not just explain that his objective is to stay on the island and he saw her as a threat?

#143. Posted by: Vikki at February 8, 2008 7:22 PM

→ 144. Posted by: Vikki --- Why lie? why not just explain that his objective is to stay on the island and he saw her as a threat?

Because he is a "man of faith". People of faith don't explain, when they have faith that they are true-correct-righteous in what they are doing.

Mac, first of all, i want you to know that i LOVE the way you write.

Anywaay... Mac, you mentioned that you think the eye could have been Locke's eye... in the second comment by "charlieis_is_not_dead" or something like that, he/she said that it was "definitely patchy's eye" as in mikhail's eye.

I think we have established that Mikhail and Locke's eyes resemble each other quite well from when they first show Locke in the ditch in "through the looking glass".

When i first saw that, i thought it was mikhail waking up... but when they zoomed out, we found out it was actually in fact Locke in the ditch.

just thought i would add that. =D

#145. Posted by: ilovebenjaminlinusxx at February 8, 2008 8:26 PM

I think you guys are on to something with the heroin...with so many different drugs out there, this kid could have easily been a crack dealer and Charlie could have been addicted to meth.

Also, does anyone think Ben's attire in that photo is extremely outdated? Is this a hint for us?

Last observation-Miles' ghost whispering...is this what we hear all the time on the island?

#146. Posted by: lost addict at February 8, 2008 8:29 PM

Sorry, i read that over and i felt like it made no sense.

I was talking about the eye in the cabin that scared away Hurley in the first episode of the season.

Mac said he thought that may have been Locke's eye in his review for the first episode of the season.

"Charlieis_not_dead" said that it was "definitely patchy's eye" (as in Mikhail's eye).

I think it could easily be Locke's as well because Mikhail and Locke's eyes resemble each other almost completely.

I guess we will find out...

Sorry if i caused any confusion with my terrible english.

Mac, i sure do admire you.

btw, I LOVE BENJAMIN LINUS <3

#147. Posted by: ilovebenjaminlinusxx at February 8, 2008 8:39 PM

Great first two episodes. Really glad that the show is back - that was a long wait.

Couple of theories the wife and I were tossing around (and sorry if these are repeats) -

I think the folks on the ship were sent on a goose chase for the Black Rock by the Others. The Boaties were told where to look for the sunken ship right where the Others deposited the plane wreckage. Boaties find the plane, tell everyone that they found the crashed plane, and the rest of the world stops looking for the crash site. Just what the Others want in order to keep their location secret (the longer the search for the crash, the greater chance the island is found).

Also, I think the Others moved the plane wreckage to the water by whatever was making all that crashing noise and knocking over trees in the early episodes. What looked and sounded like a monster was some sort of mechanical thing they had hidden.

Can hardly wait for next week.

#148. Posted by: Bill at February 8, 2008 8:40 PM

Hello All – just finished reading a whole bunch of theories out there in Internet land and thought I’d list them here. You’ve already touched on most of them, but a few may be new.

•Charlotte has been to the island before. She seemed happy to return
•C.S. Lewis references
•Maelstrom = Miles Strom
•Charlotte is Ben’s “man on the boat”
•Michael is Ben’s “man on the boat”
•Charlotte is the daughter of Annie (Ben’s little girlfriend)
•If Naomi is dead, why is she having flashbacks
•Abbadon used Frank the helicopter pilot as a crafty way to “find” the island. Frank was supposed to be on Flight 815, so the island wanted him there.
•The polar bear boneyard was the result of a successful Dharma time-space-travel experiment.
•Losties have become the Others. A “crazy” bunch of gun-wielding, paranoid kidnappers with hidden agendas.
•Box with bio-hazard bags and respirators indicates the Boaties know how Ben wiped out the Dharmites, and are coming prepared.
•When Abbadon asked Hurley, “Are they still there?” he was referring to the Boaties. The Oceanic Six take the helicopter and leave the Boaties behind.
•Boatie characters correspond to the Fantastic Four
•Picture of the boy at grandma’s house looks like Eko.
•More “cowbell” :)

@Christine #10: Thanks for the answer about Vincent’s appearance last week.

@equeyaya #19: “Wondering what Penny will do after her contact with Charlie. Surely she won't just go back to whatever she was doing before he buzzed in.” Maybe she’s writing a letter to Santa. All she wants for Christmas is her man – back from the North Pole :)

@One of the Six #51: “Covert op, recruited outsiders, Island found, they get the call and Miles has to go through a call screening receptionist!!!” Even funnier if he was connected to an automated answering system: “For English, press one. Para Espanol, oprima numero dos. For mortal danger, please press the pound key and leave your name, rank and serial number. We will make every effort to respond to your call promptly. Namaste, and have a great day.”

@PiecesofArzt #62: “New Theory Alert: Miles isn't a ghost whisperer. He just did that at the woman's house to create appearances. He can see the past like Desmond can see the future. But he has to be near the scene which is why he demanded to go to Naomi's body.” I like that theory, but then why did he say “You can go now”?

@JT #100: “I believe that Patchy had some farm animals including a cow.” EE-I-EE-I-O

@Fart #109: “108” I agree completely.

@FenwayBen #140: “but the parts about Walt being taller and the bullet going through the kidney, was that a response to fan comments or part of the plan the whole time?” Oh, I thought the same thing! And I hope it’s Damon’s little shout-out to the fans.

I also thought the Boatie off-island scenes were flash-forwards. Until Naomi and the grim reaper showed up. So, now I’m not sure. Faraday could have been crying at the underwater crash footage because he has some relationship with a person on 815 that we don’t know about yet (flashback) or because he’s having PTSD about his island adventure and those left behind (flashforward). I like either scenario.

Isn’t body armor rather heavy? How did Char stay buoyant?

So many great and quotable lines in this episode! But you guys are just as funny as those darn striking writers – “Black Rock Down” (The Other Other) and TGW (Vikki) being two of my favorites. I love a good acronym!

Lapidus (aka Frank Lapidus) is a UK based organization that is "dedicated to developing the potential and actual benefits of creative words all in our own ways through creative writing workshops, storytelling, poetry sessions or in hospitals, health centres, mental health organisations or community settings" - seems to fit the literary profile for character names.

In Grandma's house, were those pictures of tall Walt?

#153. Posted by: Sarge at February 8, 2008 11:53 PM

@Clementine: I think he is a(nother) con man who uses his 'ghosting power' to rip off gullible people. After he turns off the dustbuster. He has to say something reassuring in case the grandmother has come upstairs to see what's going on. Remember she looked suspicious when he asked for more money and even though Miles told her to stay downstairs, human nature is going to want to investigate what is going on.

Another theory in my head: The Black Rock was on the ocean floor and somehow the island has risen bringing it up and above the water. That would explain why it is in the middle of the island. Maybe the Boaties were looking for sunken treasure and ran across the island.

There have been many questions about when the underwater 815 was found and if they were back or forward flashes...

The find518.com game offers some clues. I realize this is extraneous material beyond the show, but it is an intriguing side story. For those who haven't seen it yet, it is the story of Sam, an Oceanic employee who lost his fiancée Sonia on 815. He gets some cryptic messages which cause him to join a salvage mission to find the sunken Black Rock. The wreckage of 815 is found during the salvage mission. The time line is:

1. Not long after the crash on Sept 22, Oceanic calls off the search. I'm guessing this is no more than a couple weeks. At this point Sam says it would have been 2 months until their anniversary.

2. He joins the salvage ship. The day they find the 815 wreckage is the day before their anniversary.

3. There are also references to Christmas coming at different points in the story, although it is not clear if it had past yet or not when they make the find.

This would probably place the date of the discovery and the news reports around early to mid December… before the boaties show up

I think these were back flashes.

Another interesting point from that story line... someone knew where the wreckage was and gave Sam the coordinates.

... just finished reading a whole bunch of theories...

•Charlotte has been to the island before. She seemed happy to return.

•Maelstrom = Miles Strom

•Abbadon used Frank the helicopter pilot as a crafty way to “find” the island.

•More “cowbell” :)

------------
my reply --

- Charlotte did seem to regress to a childlike state once she realized where she was when she revived. With her resume, as recited by Ben, she has to be mid-30's, he is mid-40s(+) or so, she would have been a toddler on the island (if she was there) during the purge. Her familiarity with the Hydra logo on the polar bear may also mean familiarity with the island.

- Miles Strom by some reports - Miles Straume on MOST other web sites -INCLUDING ABC.COM. I don't have an anagram for Miles Straume yet.

- I don't think Frank was part of the A-Team to find the island. Naomi was first, and her crew/pilots ate it when their helo slammed into the ocean, after she bailed. Frank is second string or a bench warmer.

- Every single episode ---
"Needs more cowbell."

If Ben has secret human resources to plant one of "his own people" on the freighter, maybe the Others aren't as dead as it seemed!

Just a though. I foresee Others freeing Ben and restoring his almighty power at some point!

#157. Posted by: InC at February 9, 2008 2:56 AM

... Others are heading for The Temple... where are the ***kids***?

if time travel/warp ... could C.S. Lewis be a grown up Oceanic 815 survivor? a la the "T" in TGW?

and i also noticed that Ben looked rather 70's stylish in that photo. *shudders*

If you take a gander at the first few seconds of the episode you see Smokey escape from the satellite phone. At a pretty convenient time to :)

I love lost, and this is my first time blogging. I think the "man on the boat" is Micheal because he says to Locke that he shouldn't kill him because he has information. If Charlotte was his spy, would he really tell all her information to people who are holding him hostage. Naomi is not really dead because when they were carrying her on the stretcher, they showed her face for a while as if to say to remember her. I can't wait until next thursday to see what happens.

Late to the party as usual...mif! Remember when Ben said something to Sawyer about how he had no chance because Jack was a distinguished surgeon and that Sawyer was nothing but a low-life con man? Earlier, someone made reference to how they all become something they loathe upon leaving the island. Perhaps Sawyer becomes someone distinguished and admired?? Maybe Kates's husband, and an admired person in the community. Just an idea. More coming later after my rewatch.

#161. Posted by: meg at February 9, 2008 8:23 AM

Perhaps Kate gets back, accused of her crime (killing her step-father) she gives them the story that he was abusing her and that's why she ran. As a 'big' celebrity, no one contradicts her story and she gets off. She rolls her new found fame into another semi-celebrity marriage. So when Jack comes stumbling into her life she has no desire to return to the island.

#162. Posted by: PiecesofArzt at February 9, 2008 9:28 AM

I'm all for the campaign of "Michael/Walt 08" for the man on the boat election, but it doesn't make much sense when you think about it. Michael's sole purpose in season two was to get Walt back and get him home. Why would he stay if he had the opportunity to leave? I realize that he may never have had the chance, but would this mean we would see another scenario of Walt being held captive again? And the award for Worst Parent of the Year goes to...

It also doesn't make much sense to be Good/Evil Charlotte (yet to be determined) since...ya know...Ben shot her and all.

On the whole eye subject real quick, I believe this episode establishes that it was NOT Locke in the window of Uncle Jake's Cabin. If it was, why would he look so surprised when Hurley let it slip that he spends his summers up there?

It also occurred to me recently that if Charlie is dead, is Hurley or anyone else going to carry on with the construction of the Church of the Jesus Stick?

I also have a feeling the Black Rock Down team is not long for this world, be it real or not. Every time the show introduces new characters, they feel the need to "clean house" by the end of the season. The writers stated as much in a few of the interviews I've seen. At least there's always flashbacks guys.

For some reason when I saw Miles, I immediately thought of Michael J. Fox's character from "The Frighteners". I even went and watched the movie again and still some, albeit slight, similarities.

My new theory I'm running with as far as why Black Rock Down is looking for Ben: Long ago Ben left the island to pursue a career as a Steward aboard Oceanic flights, and never paid in his union dues.

ok, i have an idea for a new game amung us losties.

we can all make bets on what will happen in the next episode, throughout the season, and throughoutt rhe seires. we all do it anyways, just this time well be playing for points.

wouldnt that be fun??

*****Spolier Alert*** (well, not really)

Believe me, I have invested a ton of wasted time reading each and every comment, every online theory out there after each and every episode, I've played every online game and found every hidden clue... I've paused, rewound, fastforwarded, slowmotioned, hundreds of scenes which supposedly offered clues and answers... believe me, if it is out there, I've read it, watched it or wrote about it... and after all of my interest and research, it is safe to say: I DON'T KNOW ANYTHING! (and neither do you!).

Is that a mean-spirited comment? Not at all. It is the truth. The creators of this show will not let us on to the big mysteries until they are ready to show us, at their go-ahead, we will learn what they want us to know, but until then, all of the theories and speculation is simply GUESSING. They are throwing us curve balls left and right, hoping that these blogs will fill up with eager guessing just the way they are... leading us off track and making us think that the little red ball is under this upside down cup, then all of a sudden, NOPE, its under this cup.... smoke and mirrors (or should I say SMOKEY and mirrors?).

The series has dozens of episodes left still... we still don't know anything about what is happening or who is who or who is dead, who will be back, who is good, who is evil, etc... not until the final season will all these clues turn into answers! So for now, don't blow a gasket trying to unknot your brain... let the series unfold! Obviously, part of the awesomeness of the show is that we are supposed to guess and supposed to rally for answers, but some of these theories are so out there that they wouldn't even qualify for the X-files or the Twilight Zone, let alone our beloved Lost!

YES the plane underwater is fake.
NO Michael is not the man on the boat.
NO Charlotte is not Annie.
NO the drugdealer has nothing to do with Charlie or Ecko.
YES everyone is lying other than the Losties.
No Ben cannot be trusted.
etc, etc, etc,...

Want to really have your mind blown? Wait until we see a flashforward (a big jump forward) of baby Aaron as an adult, talking about his mother, his Uncle Jack and his Grandpa Christian and what happened 25 years ago on an island out in the middle of nowhere.

We don't know anything yet. BE PATIENT and enjoy! And until then, I shall continue analyzing every second of this awesome show... just like everyone else here. Okay, call me a hypocrite, but I can't stop either!

Namaste.
Stenz

#165. Posted by: stenztv.com at February 9, 2008 11:32 AM

Is it just me or does Dan Faraday look a lot like Charlie??? Probably just coincidence, but even my husband (who does not watch the show like I do) noticed that. That is actually the first thing I thought in the season premiere when he took his helmet off and greeted Jack and Kate.

#166. Posted by: Marta at February 9, 2008 11:33 AM

Holy crap Stenz! I think you might have just taken the torch (that was once in Ben's hands) from Locke! If Mac is our Jacob, then you are our new leader... welcome to the Lost blog! Good points, dead on - put me in my place at least. I was going to make a guess about the plane on the ocean floor, but then reconsidered because it really didn't make sense afterall! Maybe Stenz and Mac can finally get us rescued!

#167. Posted by: BiscuitMoppin at February 9, 2008 11:46 AM

i highly doubt that Dharma only had one location. How else would Charlottes entire backstory make sense??

i think that all of the boaties are there for there own reason, and the creepy organizer guy( the one that visited hurley, and talked to Naomi in her flashback. i forgot his name)has his own agenda that will be the hardest to find out.

Miles' agenda- being a ghost whisperer or whatever, he wants to explore the mystical ways of the island.

Charlotte's agenda- i think that she is a Dharma enthusiest. shes spent her whole life looking for the long lost Dharma Initiative, and now shes found it.

Frank's agenda- he just wants to find the real 815 and creepy guy figured having an extra pilot wouldnt hurt.

Dan's agenda- i have no idea, hes just kind of the clueless one. he reminds me of Tom (wimpy other).

any thoughts??

#168. Posted by: kaseygirl106 at February 9, 2008 12:02 PM

If Stenz is our leader, than I would love to be Richard Alpert. I can't believe how silly it is to come in and rip people because of their wild theories, explain to them that they don't know anything yet, and then TELL them what is going on. Guess what? You don't know anything either! I totally agree with you about the silliness of some people's theory, but that's what I love about this blog. I love the fact that people can make up completely insane theories, and there's a chance (albeit a VERY limited one) that they are right! Let me be the one to show all of you that this so-called leader is not showing us what the ultimate purpose of this blog is.

@FenwayBen #140 and #149 Clementine - "the bullet going through the kidney, was that a response to fan comments or part of the plan the whole time?” Oh, I thought the same thing! And I hope it’s Damon’s little shout-out to the fans."

In the Official Lost Podcast immediately following the episode where Locke is shot by Ben, Damon and Carlton talked about how Locke was "missing something" that would be very beneficial to his survival from the gunshot. Uh, that would obviously be his kidney that his "dad" stole from him.

They knew all along. They may make some minor statements as a wink to the fans ("Taller Ghost Walt"), but major things like whether or not main character Locke survives a bullet wound to the gut... I'm of the camp that the writers DO know what they are doing and have it planned out. Why else did they want to set an end date? They know where the story is going and when they want to get there.

#172. Posted by: HurleysChikenShaq at February 9, 2008 12:18 PM

@kaseygirl - You are right on track with the varying agendas of these new characters. I suppose this will eventually lead to infighting amongst them, and ultimately to a few of them being left on the island.

#173. Posted by: meg at February 9, 2008 12:21 PM

am i the only one that found it completly hillariouse when Ben said he had answers, Locke's first instinct is to ask him what the smoke monster is?

#174. Posted by: kaseygirl106 at February 9, 2008 12:21 PM

In case anyone is wondering, the ultimate purpose of this blog is to have an awesome time discussing an awesome show. That's it!

Once upon a time I used to think about the long-term prospects for my reviews, but then I realized that each review is meant to exist in a specific period of time. The fun of this blog is that it captures those few days immediately after a new episode when everyone weighs in with their thoughts, opinion and theories. I'm sure if we looked back on previous prognostications we'd find some that were correct and many that were wrong, but really, it just doesn't matter. For me, the joy of writing these reviews is sharing my excitement in that specific moment. How it actually plays out is secondary.

Not to get all social-theorist here, but the the reason I love the blog format is because it, unlike any other format, truly captures "the moment." And right now, with Lost firing on all cylinders, these moments are pretty friggin great!

#175. Posted by: mac at February 9, 2008 12:26 PM

I am all for more cowvbell as well in these episodes! Someone questioned where the cow came from in this episode way up there in the comments (sorry, I can't say which post specifically...). I was thinking the same thing...the only place I remember seeing farm animals was at the Flame station where Bea and Mikhail were posted. Maybe this cow survived the explosion there and is just wandering the island now???

Back to Michael as the "man on the boat"...I think there may be some merit to the theory that there was more to the deal he had to strike with Benry in order to get off the island. Not only did he have to bring the four people on the list to the dock, but he also had to do some undercover work for Ben on this boat before actually getting to leave. Now this doesn't make much sense (here I go shooting holes in my own theory here...) because where would NSW (normal size Walt) be during this time and what would he be doing? Maybe they both had to go on the boat? Then, upon their return to the island, TGW would turn into TRW (taller real Walt)???

#176. Posted by: Vikki at February 9, 2008 12:45 PM

I think both Stenz and Mac are right - good yin/yang going on there! The blog format is awesome, and at the same time a bit farfetched at times...It is obvious Stenz is kidding because he is saying one thing, but doing another - hmmmm, is he on the island too?!? Mac keep up the good work! Stenz - keep writing in, I liked your post - especially this part:

#180. Posted by: defranco rulz at February 9, 2008 2:50 PM

@ defranco rulz (180)

Naomi may have had a vest on when she landed, but she was there before the "fab 4", so there is a pretty good chance she would have taken it off before Locke threw a dart at her back. Also, several members of my family are Police Officers and the vests issued here will stop a bullet with the exception of a high powered rifle, or "cop-killer" bullets), but the Kevlar will not stop a knife... just a thought...

#181. Posted by: three men and a little lady (I counted Hugo twice...) at February 9, 2008 4:01 PM

I'll probably post again later as this episode was filled with so much fodder.
So here are the points I saw:
~ Ben and Locke seem to be batting for the same team. Ben knew about Locke's missing kidney and shot him accurately, maybe to awaken John or something. Either way they are both leader types and I am betting at least one of them will survive and stay on the island as a shepherd for the flock. (the other may be in the coffin)
~ Hugo is Huge as far as island mythology goes, yet I still don't know exactly why. My bet is that he only has four toes.
~ Speaking of Hugo, this episode (4x02) should have been the opener. Each season starts with an eye introducing us to a new group of people either new or resident to the island. We got an eye, albeit a mechanical eye underwater. The only reason I could see the Hurley episode opening up the season is because of the writer's strike and perhaps episode 8 ends the Hugo story arc.
~ The voice of Regina (the woman on the freighter that Myles talks to) sounds amazingly like Naomi. I listened a few times and it's a dead ringer. I hope to see that actress again, she is so hot, especially in this episode when they cleaned her up for the flashback.
~ The pilot, Frank, doesn’t seem to be wearing a bulletproof vest, just a sleeve-less T-shirt. Why?
~ I agree with above posters that perhaps all four of the A-Team ‘freighties’ were supposed to be on Oceanic 815. Each of their flashbacks start with news of the crash. Dan starts to cry, Myles seems distraught, Charolette seems interested in all news about it and Frank obviously was supposed to be on it. So I am thinking they were warned somehow about the flight, and that is what has caused their reactions.
~ My vote is that it’s Michael as Ben’s mole on the freighter, don’t know exactly why, but I guess we’ll find out.
~ Daniel’s character reminds me a lot of Forest Whitaker’s character in Species. An emotional psychic. This could explain why he was emotional over the crash and why Frank had to comfort him saying that they will pick up Naomi’s body on a later flight. Regardless he’s more than just a physicist. He doesn’t like to be pigeon holed. I think his acting, as well as Myles’ is stellar and will give great results in the future.
~ Speaking of Myles, he is great comedy relief as a serious yet sarcastic guy. His line, “Oh you’re a survivor of Oceanic 815 – Wow!” was so awesome. [Though I don’t know why he uses a wet-vac to speak to ghosts, did anybody else catch that he uses a vacuum cleaner as a medium to talk to ghosts?]
~ Speaking of best lines there were a lot, “I gave you a wink” “I saw a cow” “If you’re sleeping with my daughter at least call me Ben” to name a few.
~ Polar Bear in Tunisia, Scary Abbadon man, Vincent’s persistence of showing up at peak events… these are questions that I have no clue about.

That’s all I have for now – sorry about the long post

Favorite MACism’s:
“because Jack and Kate haven't had a lives-dangling-in-the-balance island adventure for at least 12 hours.”
&
“And that means the castaways now have a viable escape vehicle ... as long as Locke doesn't blow it up.”

i had the funniest dream about Lost last night.i think you guys will get a kick out of this one.

jack and locke ran into each other in the forrest and for some reason started telling eacher Yo Mama jokes. exept, it was like really intense and there was dramatic Lost music playing.
suddenly, the dramatic music fades away and Charlie and George Micheal are suddenly there on a giant stage. They randomly Burst into Jitterbug and it cuts to a shot of Jack and hes snaping his fingers to the beat then its a shot of locke and his foots tapping.
Jack and Locke forget ther differences and break into a horribly choriographed dance nuber. then Hurley shows up and joins in.
Losties are litterally coming out of bushes and dancing.
i woke up and could not stop laughing. ive never had a funnier dream in my life.

are we still going to do the weekly photo captions??

#185. Posted by: kaseygirl106 at February 9, 2008 6:20 PM

@ defranco rulz (180)

Kevlar is designed to stop blunt impact, not cutting. It cuts pretty easily. It won't stop crossbow bolts either, but that is a different story.

@ stenztv.com (165)

Flash forward to Aaron....OMG! That would be awesome. I am upset that I did not think of it first.

@ mac

I like the term 'freighties' rather than 'boaties'. It is more descriptive of the vessel they come from from, and it rhymes with 'tailies' better. You mentioned it in your post, and few have commented on it, so I thought I would. Keep up the good work.

#186. Posted by: onelostdude at February 9, 2008 6:29 PM

@182/callaway76 I think the reason this episode was second was because there was still soem housekeeping to do...the Losties had to be split into two groups before the "freighties" arrived. I agree that it's a departure form the previous two sesons (when we opened with the Tailies and then the Others), but it wouldn't have worked to have them arrive any earlier...or to have told their flashbacks form on the freighter as who else is on board is still a mystery.

Also, I would guess Frank is not wearing a bullet proof vest because he was supposed to drop off the team, not land the helicopter and go searching for cows...

#187. Posted by: FenwayBen at February 9, 2008 7:24 PM

Here's a theory I don't think has been discussed yet. When Miles went into the home of the black family to do the ghost whispering thing...then he got the drugs and the money. Ever think that family may be connected to Eko and his brother somehow? They looked more Caribbean than African American, and the drugs....

#188. Posted by: meg at February 9, 2008 7:29 PM

I also don't buy the whole "Ben as a hostage" thing...and then Locke says Ben is completely harmless except for his mouth??!! That's not true. They are in cahoots (Ben and Locke)

Sorry for the multiple posts, but I am rewatching the show and posting each separate idea as it comes to me.

Locke quickly quieted Hurley when he started talking about the tail section people being dead. Later Hurley lied about knowing Ana Lucia...conection??

VERY late to the party . . . flew out of town Thursday early evening for concert on Friday.
Getting back this afternoon, I’ve watched the episode three times.

I agree with Cecil’s very early comment that I thought I was revisiting CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF A THIRD KIND throughout.

I agree with late post by FenwayBen that this episode had to be second because we needed to “house-keep”, split into red and blue teams, establish some island “non-rapport” among the losties, and introduce the mysterious and rather sinister Mr. A-bad-one with that singularly nasty, “Are they still alive?” remark . . . just to set the stage.

My only comment about this episode is . . IT WENT BY SO QUICK!!! Good Heavens, I felt like I was just getting started and suddenly it was over . . . It had to be one of the quickest paced episodes in relation to information supply we’ve had in a long time.

I’m also thankful that stenztv.com was able to set me straight from my over zealous speculation-mindset. I shall henceforth be satisfied with being clueless. It’s always good to be lectured by the voice of reason occasionally. I’m very grateful . .

Beyond that, I really enjoyed the episode. All three times! I may go for another one before the evening is done!

Hopefully, the writers are back at their desks on Monday. Full Season Ahead? Wouldn’t that be great?!?

#192. Posted by: davidrh at February 9, 2008 8:48 PM

So the boaties are after Ben, but why? MAYBE maybe these are kids or relations to members of the original Dharma Initiative that Ben executed by deadly gas many years ago? There would be much more to the how and why but all those Dharmas would have had to had family/friends they left behind to study on the island...and Ben blocked all transmissions afterward so it took this long to finally locate it?? This theory has really nothing to do w/815 crash, more about Ben and the island BEFORE the losties crashed.Hmmmm

#193. Posted by: redheadflyer at February 9, 2008 9:41 PM

I think that the coffin of Ben that Jack visited is emptied. Also, when bearded Jack was in the hospital to steal drugs and was confronted he said after being asked how much he had to drink..."Get my father down here, if I've had more to drink than he has you can fire me!" Was this not after the island because he went to see kate that night. The indian ocean discovery could also be a different oceanic flight crash( to alleviate the thought that someone paid to sink a plane for the media discovery) Thanks

#194. Posted by: Goodnight at February 9, 2008 9:41 PM

To clarify my theory (#193 comment) I think the boaters are there to bring Ben back to justice for exterminating all the Dharma scientists. Of course that happened many years ago and they have been trying to find him all this time, just happens to coincide with when the losties are trying to get rescued- but the skinny guy already said '"cant say that rescuing you is our primary objective"....they want Ben killed or brought to justice! They somehow found out he was in charge of killing the Dharmas, and these are their relatives maybe...?? Thoughts?

#195. Posted by: redheadflyer at February 9, 2008 10:12 PM

to 195, it becomes so convoluted with ben having a man on the freighter. who could that be? he obviously had knowledge of there presence that is as mysterious as his knowledge of everyone else. is his man on the freighter michael or patch? sidenote: ben did have access to the submarine to go to other places where the photograph was snapped.

#196. Posted by: Goodnight at February 9, 2008 11:47 PM

nothing in this season has explained Naomi haveing a picture of Penny and Desmond. i think that unladenswallow (9) is on the right track with the Charles Widmore theory. i think that he could potentially be behind a lot more than just the decoy oceanic 815.it would explain a lot of things.

Forgot to put this one on my other post (197)

another possibility:
Charlotte didnt seem the slightest bit desturbed by the thought of Locke killing Ben, and she didnt seem to reconize him. my bet is that they all have a different picture in there pocket. Naomi had Desmond, Miles had Ben. who else could they be after??

any thoughts on this??

#198. Posted by: kaseygirl106 at February 10, 2008 10:02 AM

Hey, anyone think the heroin family could be related to Eko?

Ooops, I mean, ANTP? :)

#199. Posted by: taylor0822 at February 10, 2008 10:25 AM

ANTP had two different frames?

In the first screenshot, as Miles is entering the house, the picture is in a wide wooden frame.

When Miles comes back downstairs after conducting his surly seance, he says to Grandma "He's at peace now." He looks at the wall and the same picture is in a thin metal frame. And the other pictures are positioned diffently.

And the ghost dustbuster ($28.99 at Target) is supposedly used by real ghostbusters to produce cold air. Apparently, people on the other side like it a little chilly.

#200. Posted by: Clementine at February 10, 2008 1:13 PM

The televised wreckage of Flight 815 was supposedly found in the Sunda Trench in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Bali.

Shifting of tectonic plates under the Sunda Trench was the source of the earthquake that caused the 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami.

It is currently Day 94 on the island which would correspond to Christmas Eve 2004. The earthquake and tsunami occurred on December 26, 2004.

Guess we’ll know in the next few episodes if the tsunami is a featured plot device :)

And maybe the “Ho, Ho, Ho” clues last week were intended to remind us that Christmas (and the tsunami) are approaching! Or a connection to Christmas Island, which is located near the Trench.

Also, just read a Lostpedia summary of the “Find 815” game, which featured the Sunda Trench, the Christiane I, the Black Rock and Christmas Island. I know a few posters mentioned it last week, but if anyone is interested:

And another Lostpedia theory article about the Vile Vortices. Basically, there are twelve areas across the globe which are gateways to another dimension (like the Bermuda Triangle). And that could be one explanation for how planes, and boats and polar bears come through from different places in the world (the Lost island being the central dumping ground at the end of the electromagnetic chute).

I know its Sunday but hopefully people are reading. When they mention "big" Walt, it hit me why Walt was taken off the island in the first place. When they realized this show was a hit, and would last a while, there was no way to age him corectly. 3 months is 3 seasons real walt is growing, and that just would not work on the island. We see what the actor looks like now from that scene with John, and since he's not "really" there they can make up some "big" Walt thing.

On a seperate note, weren't all the children taken in seaosn 1? Where are they? Also, is there anyone left in the little "others" town? Thoughts anyone?

Just my forty seven cents (adjusted for inflation)

The 815 found at the botton of the Indian Ocean is not fake - it is very much real.....in the reality where the Losties Flight 815 was brought into. In its "reality" it was traveling westbound and was brought down at the same time the Losties' 815 was brought down in its "reality." I fully expect we will hear about the bodies of JAck, Kate, the Marshall, Locke, Hurley, etc. all being recovered.

When Desmond allowed the countdown clock to expire, setting off the electromagnatism "event" that caused 815 to crash - it opened the door between alternate realities (parallel universes?). That brought the 815 we know and love into this "reality". So, that expalins the two different planes etc.

The reason anyone who does get off the island would want/have to go back is that when they do go "home", they will find themselves in a world that is similar to the one they came from but is, in fact, a different reality - complete with just enough difference to make one go a little nuts.

In this reality, Jack's father could still be very much alive and working in that hospital when Jack says "get my father down here" etc.

I eallize this is all very "Mirror, Mirror" (some of you will get the reference) - but it is an easy explanation for what we have seen so far.

The only question I have is - when we see the flashbacks and the flashforwards- which reality are we being shown?

@DocH #203/204:
"I count it as day 93 - just starting - on the island. The actual origin of the Tsunami is 1300 miles NW of the crash site South of Bali. The closest Vile Vortex is 900 mile from Bali and 1400 miles from the Island."

Lostpedia has "Confirmed Dead" as occurring on Day 94. I just go by their count, as extrapolating three months of island time across three plus years of real time would give me a headache :) Just a few days away from Christmas, in either case.

The earthquake that resulted in the December 26, 2004 tsunami occurred along the Sunda Trench, involving the tectonic plates that run under the Trench. I didn't calculate the mileage from the epicenter to the supposed crash site, and we don't know where our island is, so who knows if it is near the epicenter or not? But it could be possible that the writers would use that real-world event in the show, right? There was a lot of speculation about it last year. Also, there was another earthquake in that area on March 28, 2005. Maybe Locke has some more stuff he wants to blow up.

http://earthobservatory*nasa*gov/Newsroom/NewImages/images*php3?img_id=16864

And the Vile Vortices Theory is that the island is the "dumping ground" for all the various stuff that gets sucked into the Vile Vortices. Not that the island or supposed 815 crash site are anywhere near a Vortice on the map. How did you calculate that a Vile Vortice is 1400 miles from the Island? Or are you referring to Christmas Island? Because if you have the coordinates of the Lost Island, you better share with your fellow Lost bloggers!

Anybody else checked out the cool Lost music videos on the ABC website? Not only are they a wonderful visual montage of each character's personality and trials/tribulations, they totally nailed the music! In case you've missed 'em, go to ABC website's Lost homepage and view the videos. So far, they've done:

Locke: set to "crazy" by Patsy Cline!

Kate: perfectly paced to Fiona Apple's song "Criminal"

Hurley: of course, his theme song, as we know, is "Good Vibrations" which suits his character to a tee

Sawyer: set to "Bad to the Bone" by George Thorogood -- perfect!

Jack: his is to Robert Palmer's "Bad Case of Lovin' You" (yeah, the one that starts out.."doctor, doctor, give me the news...")

So, since this week's episode os Sayid-centric, maybe his video is next. Any wagers on what his theme song will be?

On that note, what about Claire/Aaron? Juliette? Ben? Sun and Jin?

If the sundra trench 815 is real, even in a separate reality, then why were they traveling westbound from sydney to get to LA? Wouldn't the media have asked the same question? perth itself is at least 1100 miles west of sydney and they certainly did not take off from there.

#208. Posted by: Goodnight at February 10, 2008 9:01 PM

About the fake/alternate Oceanic 815 discovered by the ROVs, I'm sure others have mentioned how strange it is that no one back in the off-island world seems to question how the plane could have been so far off course. And though we don't know where the island is, could it be significant that the plotted crash site appears to be exactly the same distance from Sydney as it is from Sydney to Fiji? Where the pilot from the pilot says the flight went wacky?

I think that Charlotte is Ben's daughter (whether they know it or not). The clever writers made a point to mention her birthday, she was born in 1979 which would make her 25 in 2004. Perfect age to be his daughter. I wonder what date the boaties' picture of Ben was taken on? Perhaps he fathered a child when/if he was off the island when that picture was taken. So many excellent theories here, my brain is swimming! Thank you guys!

#210. Posted by: lostluva at February 11, 2008 1:24 AM

It's a BULL, not a cow!

flashbacks-forwards-my heads gonna explode!-most of them have footage of the ROV discovery of 815 -heli pilot..rov footage,dan..ROV footage-ghost whisperer - radio reporting crash of loss of 815 as approching grandma's house date's that as time of crash, flashback-cs lewis.. papers showing ROV pic's.

So... freighter found wreck 1 to 2 weeks prior to current, assembeled covert ops team .?.?.?

Adding my vote for:
freighter is dharma
.but why would Ben send M&Walt to it?
.this would potentially expose him by proximity

Micheal's on the boat

Altogether we are 4-choreographed

C S Lewis is Bens 'man'
.Her expresion when Ben starts spouting off is .disgust, not surprise.

freighter was on assignment to find island and Ben (cover story-black rock), and side tripped to fake 815 wreckage, to quell anyone else looking in area
--but the finding of the fake815 wreckage seemed key to assembling the 4?man crew---Arrgh - I'm so confused

The current location west of Australia supports the crash in daylight, which I supported in season 1.
They left Sydney at 2pm (or later), flew 3-6 hours east(supposedley) and crashed in the daylight? not possible.

missing kidney:

w/ everything "planned" the way it is, i started to wonder if someone other than Des could see the future and prepare for it. (maybe that's how freighty #3 knew she needed a vest?)

anyway, i wondered as far off as it may sound that, Locke's dad wasn't his dad, didn't need the kidney and everything was planned so as to remove it to save his life in the future.

but, as in #182 points out, if Ben knows as much as he does, he'd know Locke didn't have a kidney -- in fact, aren't we sure of this? -- and made sure *not* to kill Locke. I mean, c'mon, if you want someone dead, you point the gun at their head and pull the trigger, right Jack?

but squeezing the 2 theories... it would seem a lot more balanced if there was someone on the "other team" that had the same knowledge or foreknowledge that Ben does, yes/no?

someone w/ money... makes sense that Penny's dad would be the one behind Namomi looking for Des. why exactly -- guilt or evil intentions -- not able to say.

but because i can't let go of my first hypothesis, if Des is the only person w/ the ability to know someone's ETD... maybe he told his future Pop-in-Law to extract Locke's Kidney! wouldn't have to be in the future... but in the past when he has another "i'm in the past, but i know the future" flashes.

Hi guys, late to the party--but well informed, I hope.

Here's an idea about Ben's "man on the boat" I think it's Mikael (Patchy). He never seems to die, and the last time we saw him he had a grenade in his hand and he was already conveniently in the water. He would also have previous undercover experience and is a very good liar. I can see him wreaking havoc on the freighter and infiltrating their communications systems to inform Ben about their intentions.

I really don't think Ben's spy is Michael. I DO think, however, that he and Walt are on the boat cooling their heals waiting for the plot to catch up.

Other thoughts: How cool is Miles?!? And Dan Faraday obviously has some important work to do on the Island.

My other main theory is that it's Michael's room that Miles visited. I think it's his mom's house and Walt has been trying to communicate with her in his "special" way. The problem with this theory is the drugs and the money. Why would Michael have so much money? and heroin?

I also think that Miles figured out that the grandson wasn't murdered and that's why he gave back half of the money. He also knows that the grandson isn't dead, and Miles knows more about the Island than we currently give him credit for.

And how cool is it that us Filmfodder fans were speaking French (much to the dismay of other posters) and the next episode features some French?!? Did you franophones get the African accented French of the Tunisian guy? Excellent!

Great episode! I agree with davidrh that it went by at lightening speed.

Why is the pilot wearing a Hawaiian shirt? And why is he so drunk acting?

Woooohooo! Go Lost!

#214. Posted by: En Provence at February 11, 2008 6:35 AM

I agree that Michael is on the boat. I was thinking as to what could completely turn us around again. I have a little theory of my own.

Michael found the boat, and now that we was free and Walt was 'safe'. Decided to help the people on the boat save the friends that be betrayed. After working with them for a while he figures out what these people are going to do to the island/survivors and ends up realizing that Ben is actually a good guy trying to save everyone's life.

I think that the writers are going to spin us around and around and around until we don't know what is going on (I feel there already), so I figured that this was a good way to make Michael back in everyone's good books, and make us like Ben, which is hated by everyone.

Just a thought, I hope I don't get yelled at for giving my opinion! ;-)

Again, I apprechiate all the effort Mac!

#215. Posted by: db at February 11, 2008 10:59 AM

Great review mac. Long time reader but first post. Is my memory faulty or didn't Ben in seasons past tell/show one of the Losties when in captivity - specifically Jack - that flight 815 was in the trench, which is why no one would come looking for them? Perhaps I am creating my own flash-forward/backwards :) Also, didn anyone else see a a name on the polar bear's tag found in Tunisia - "Charlie"?

I did calculate it. The tsunami epicenter site is ~1300 miles NW of the supposed crash south of Bali. I used USGS data and Goggle Earth to measure.

The closest Vile Vortex to the supposed crash is ~900 miles (SSW), based on the reference you provided and measuring again with Goggle Earth.

The Lost island is NW of French Polynesia. Based on the testimony that they were a thousand (SSW) miles off course, the storm, the location of unexplored island groups, AND the testimony of Danielle about where she came from, where she thought she was, and the capability of the vessel she was on and its' range. That super good WAG puts the island ~1400 miles from the closest Vile Vortex, using your reference and Goggle Earth.

As for day 93 vs. 94. I was just counting. Lostpedia is input by common folk making their best guess in a Wiki. In the "Pop-Up-Video" version of the S3 finale, they highlighted, just outside of the Radio Tower, as Losties were getting ready to turn-off the jamming - as Day 91. I have only counted two nights since then - that means the night of 91, then 92... that puts us on day 93. Not saying I'm positive... just that I was counting.

Going back and looking at the regiustration number on the helicopter I find I made a mistake in that earlier posting. The reg number is N842M (Last letter "M", not "N", and thnat is the actual registration of a helicopter that was just regitered last summer.

The type is listed as UH-1B, which is the Huey familiar to Vietnam vets and aviation buffs. The original IH-1B was made by Bell Helicopters but this craft's manufacturer is listed as
GARLICK HELICOPTERS INC - so it may be heavily modified.
From Garlick Helicopters' web site:

"Rotorcraft Service Center LLC is an FAA Certified Repair Station specializing in the retrofit, overhaul, repair and full restoration of Bell Helicopters. We own and operate an approved Lycoming T53 series test cell. Our highly trained and certified personnel assure our customers of a quality product."

"Rotorcraft Service Center currently holds FAA "Type Certificates" for the UH-1B, UH-1E, UH-1F, UH-1P, UH-1L, UH-1H, AH-1 and OH-58 helicopters. Many of our "Type Certificates" are accepted in foreign countries including Spain, Portugal, Argentina, New Zealand, Australia and Chile."

Not sure what, if anything this may have to do with "Lost", but it explains why a helicopter modified in Montana is available in the South Pacific. It's obvious the "Lost" production had it re-registered with the 842 in the registration number. I think the "Other" in 'category' below is hilarious.

Go to the Garlick website and look at their photo page and they have a UH-1B in marine camo (movies, perhaps?) with reg number N841M.

They even do a fire-fighting version of the Apache!

#227. Posted by: kaseygirl106 at February 11, 2008 5:02 PM

Everyone is probably done reading these posts by now, but I wanted to read them all before I posted my comments. Unfortunately it took me until Monday to do this and I started fading out around post 175 or so, only scrolling throught the rest. But here are my thoughts for what they're worth.

- All the boaties had flashbacks, not flashforwards, since the plane was found before Naomi arrived on the island (even though the crash is staged).

- When Dan was watching the broadcast of the plane footage, he may have been crying because he himself was suppossed to be on the plane, but the fact that he said "I don't know" when asked why he was so upset, makes me believe that the physicist in him knows something is wrong but he has no explanation yet.

- I believe all 4 of the boaties were supposed to be on the original 815 flight, just like everyone else on that plane was put on it for a reason. But at the last minute, those 4 got off. They are still needed on the island though, so were brought here separately by Naomi and Abaddon, who is working with Ben. Perhaps Abaddon is the man on the boat.

- Michael could also be the "man on the boat", which makes even more sense why he would not be visited if it were him in the coffin. As someone mentioned in last week's post, I think Jack was upset because Michael is the only one who knows how to get back to the island. Also Michael being on the boat may have been part of the deal Ben made with him to get off the island.

- Charlotte being the "man on the boat" and Ben's childhood friend, Annie? hmmm, it's something worth pondering? I do not think it's Annie's daughter because Charlotte looks Ben's age.

- Post 142, you beat me to it. I too thought that when Miles went to the home, the picture on the wall was Ecko as a child! The camera twice panned slowly over it so either way it is important to note. I wonder if Miles knew about the money before he got there, or he just found out when talking to the dead kid and got a bonus, thus felt he wanted to share the wealth by offering a refund to his grandmother.

- Why was Locke so upset and disturbed when Ben shot Charlotte? Only moments earlier he had no problem plunging a knife in Naomi's back, who was also part of Charlotte's team. Unless Charlotte, Ben, and Locke are all in cahoots?

- By far the funniest line (which I'm so surprised no one has mentioned) was Sawyer to Locke about Ben: "Here, you walk him!"

- I like the theories on Atlantis.

- The pilot from season 1 is most definitely the mindreader from Heroes. I could not tell if it was the same actor displayed on the screen during this episode. But that photo had a mustache. Does anyone recall if the pilot had a mustache in season 1?

- There is definitely something important about George not available to come to the phone when Miles called. Why else would this trivial dialouge even be in the script?

- The theory about Miles seeing the past instead of talking to ghosts is very interesting!

- I think the picture of Ben is from the 70's when he was part of Dharma as an adult before the purge. It looks to be in one of their stations, maybe the "hatch"?

- The boaties are only bad in Ben's eyes because they're coming to get him, most certainly for the Dharma purge I'm sure. They are fine with the 815 crew, but see how they react with Juliette when they think she's a native? Apparantly they don't know she's an innocent victim of Ben as well. Natives + Ben led the purge.

- Remember the guy who used to push the button before Desmond, and how he thought the air was contaminated? Well we now know why. Perhaps the Dharma's off-island crew realized all on the island were poisoned so they told this guy to put on his mask if he ever went out or he too would be dead.

- The polar bear at the excavation site could have been an experiment in time travel, in this case going back in time, and this Charlotte person is involved with Dharma.

- Post 120 has a good point. How will the Oceanic 6 be explained to the public after the crash was staged?

Are you happy I left spaces for you this time, Smitty? Not that I care if you read my posts or not.

#228. Posted by: BEMH at February 11, 2008 5:45 PM

Wow! This episode freaked me out somewhat.

The new character, the English girl - Ben mentioned some of her personal information. He said she's from Bromsgrove, England and studied at Kent university. This is a huge coincidence as far as I'm concerned; I'm from Worcester (a town very near Bromsgrove) and I also studied at Kent!

It's bizarre as Worcester and Bromsgrove are such small, random little places - shocked that they were mentioned on Lost! And uttering Kent uni in the same sentence was simply astonishing.

Needless to say, my mouth was agape when this information came out!

Cheers,

@DocH #221: I yield to your Google-mapping abilities, but I choose to suspend judgment on the location of the island until the last episode of the last season. I’m still hoping for another dimension (the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition, between the pit of man's fears and the summit of his knowledge - cue Twilight Zone music).

@kaseygirl106 #226: I have Jin in a Lost death pool, so my guess would be anybody but Jin, because I never win anything :)

@tripleplay #228: Very cool. Charlotte makes me suspicious. I don’t think she is the “man on the boat” or Annie’s daughter, but she has major secrets.

And my guess for the next member of the Oceanic Six to be revealed this week is Sayid, because he has to fly the helicopter. But I’m also sure I’m completely wrong.

@kaseygirl- I know who's going to die next. Jin all the way. He is going to die soon and we all know it. He has that little aura a character gets before they die, the whole "I'm getting less and less important so the writers of lost will find a way to bring me back into the plotline, but unfortunately I wil have to die." Like I said, Jin all the way.

#232. Posted by: forever_lost at February 11, 2008 8:34 PM

Sayid - one of the six? Of course, it has to be . . .

He's rescued - Newspapers splash his picture everywhere - Nadia sees the picture - Music swells - Sayid arrives aboard Oceanic 4211 from Singapore - His eyes search the crowd - She raises her hand - Nadia and Sayid run in slow motion into each others arms - A full Symphony Orchestra suddenly appears on the airport messanine - Rose petals fall from the clouds - Barry Manilow, suspended on cables, floats onto a white piano bench, at a white heart shaped piano and begins crooning Iraqi love songs - The crowd jumps to its feet - Everybody hugs everybody in wild abandon - A WORLD GONE MAD WITH LOVE!!!! - Sayid and Nadia are wisked from the airport, carried on the shoulders of an adoring throng - The ultimate LOST HAPPY ENDING! . . .

or not.

Hey guys, remember when Locke "ordered" Sawyer to kill his dad in series 3, were we ever told how his dad got onto the island?! I was reading through some synopsis' on the last series and this one intrigued me 'cos i can't remember if we ever found out HOW he got onto the island? I hope they keep up to date with all the stuff they introduced to us in the last series!!

I looked at the screen captures on another site and can now see this plus the other pictures are different. The shot before Miles goes up has a focus of the picture with a little of the other pictures but the after shot has five pictures and these do not look like the frames and pictures from the first shot.

Also there is a shot of the room when Miles first comes in and one after he leaves; the shots are almost the same. I have looked for something different but have not found anything.

Something is going on here, maybe Miles can change the past through what he does and this is why the pictures are different. I do see that the picture of the boy looks like Eko, which may have been by design. We see the similarly and focus on this and not the fact that the pictures have changed. The writers may be giving us false clues mixed with real clues hoping we will chase the wrong trail, kind of like Jack did with Naomi.

I don't believe it that the mole is Michael. Why would he do it? Ben let him take a boat and get away. Why would he be suddenly loyal now that he has Walt safe? Plus any anti-Other faction wouldn't trust anyone coming from the island they are looking for. I'm putting my money on someone from the mainland like Juliet's sister Rachel (in some sort of "you'll be helping your sister" scam by Ben), Helen (Locke's girlfriend), or Nadia (Sayid's girlfriend). Somebody obscure from a flashback.

@BEMH: I think everyone was shocked to see Charlotte shot because 1) Ben should not have been loose or with a gun and 2) even though they were suspicious, they weren't angry or out to get her.

I don't believe it was Eko in the photos. He grew up in Africa and having a grnadmother in the US doesn't make a lot of sense. I cna't imagine too many families in the US would return to Africa to take up a living in poverty there when poverty here is kingly in comparison. Perhaps a young Michael?

I think Charlotte is from Team Penny. She is ecstatic when she finds the Dharma polar bear collar. I think Penny knows that her father is funding Dharma and that he had something to do with Desmond's disappearance.

... Sawyer to kill his dad... were we ever told how his dad got onto the island?!... can't remember if we ever found out HOW he got onto the island?
_____
Never told! Implied by Ben = Magic Box. Just make a wish Locke... poof... con man Sawyer. The Man from Tallahassee. Known - reared ender auto accident. Pops tossed into ambulanced and drugged. Next thing - on the island.
Theory - his drugged self was taken to the portal, an hour outside of Miami, placed through it. Came out on the other side in the the Looking Glass station, put on the submarine, taken to the dock, hauled to the barracks, revived, dumped in the closet. Juliet went through the same portal, drugged. They just revived her in the sub at the dock, so she could grip & grin with Ben.

Love the Mirror, Mirror thoery in post 205. However I think that Lawnmower Man noticing that the body on the tv wasn't the pilot and the person on the phone's reaction, that the 815 underwater is a fake. Also, if all the people that crashed are in a new reality then how do the four A team members figure in? It seems they would have had to change universes somehow as well as they seem to be aware of both realities.

Maybe the changing picture frames in the house Miles visits show that he has somehow changed universes. I do think somehow the heroin will tie in to Eko or Charlie somehow. It doesn't make sense why they would just keep mentioning the same drug in all these various plotlines.

Maybe Hurley isn't the one dreaming all of this. Maybe Charlie in a heroin induced stupor is imagining all of this.

I don't think Mikhail's on the freighter. I'm pretty sure it was his eye Hugo saw in the cabin. o't think i would be Michael either as this person on the boat was able to give Ben so much information on the A-team members. Doesn't seem like Michael would be able to do that. Someone that has been helping Ben from the outside as Richard has in the past must be the mole.

Gosh I am all over the place. Not sure what to think anymore. Man I love this show!

#241. Posted by: Crispy Seaplanes at February 12, 2008 1:30 PM

@235 ANTP:

I definitely don't think that it's a prop error. They seem to have been specifically showing us something, otherwise why focus on the pics both up and down the stairs?

What if it's something like the butterfly effect? Say that Miles has essentially the opposite "power" as Desmond, meaning he can see the past (which I know a couple others have already suggested). Well, maybe him going there to that house and doing his thing up in the room changed something slightly, and our clue to that is the photos. Similar to how Desmond's ability has changed the future, Miles ability may have changed the past.

#242. Posted by: LostChameleon at February 12, 2008 1:31 PM

@240 DocH:

The drugged theory reminds me of a Stephen King short story titled, "The Jaunt". It was a teleporter, but you had to be knocked out to go through it. Anyone who is awake dies on the other end. If you are awake, the time during the teleport is infinite, that is why you die. I have no idea if LOST is borrowing from this or not, but you reminded me of it.

Claire gets off the island. or at least gets into a helicopter at some point.
in Greatest Hits, Desmond says to Charlie that he saw Claire and her baby get into a rescue helicopter in one of his visions.

#246. Posted by: kaseygirl106 at February 12, 2008 7:12 PM

I’m going to guess that Claire and baby Aaron don’t leave the island (not to say they won’t go up in the helicopter at some point). I’m always prepared for the reverso double-twist from the writers and never take anything at face value. But, I guess the trick could be there is no trick and Desmond did actually see them leave.

I think Ben would try to manipulate the situation for Aaron to stay, although it’s been some time since we had any references to Aaron as being “special” because he was born on the island. Remember when we thought maybe he was Jacob? We never did find out what exactly Dr. Ethan was injecting into Claire’s belly.

Aaron is remarkably easy-going. No fussing or crying or hunger or diaper changes, even though trekking cross-country. He’s like a Baby Jack Bauer!

#247. Posted by: Clementine at February 12, 2008 7:44 PM

→ 247. Posted by: Clementine
I agree. Claire and Aaron were destined for the island. The Australian psychic had a massive fit when he "read" Claire and pending Aaron. Wanted nothing to do with them, refunded the cash. Saw their future. LA was bad, or at least not in play for future Claire. Aaron kharma points to a future Ben or a future Locke/Walt/Alpert role on the island.

Desmond's visions have been off before, they change as the kharma changes. Like Charlie dying at the cliffs, Charlie arrow to the throat, etc....

#248. Posted by: DocH at February 13, 2008 12:08 AM

Finally got through all these comments - just wanted to toss this out there...

Has anyone thought that Miles might have another connection to the island - maybe through Dr. Marvin Candle (of the orientation films)? Maybe there's some relation there...

Also, the "man on the boat" would have had to spent a considerable amount of time on the freighter or with the "Boaties" in order to gather the information they did, and also get it back to Ben. How long has Ben been away from some kind of technological source of information. Unless they are beaming the info to him telepathically or something.

But I don't think it's Patchy - it's only been what, 2-3 days since he killed Charlie? How could he have gotten to the freighter and gathered that info and given it to Ben in that time? Ben has been in the Losties' captivity since then.

#249. Posted by: Katie at February 13, 2008 1:41 AM

"Anyone notice any "HO"s in this episode? None leaped out at me on a first viewing."

1) Hurley referenced the fact that he was standing by the HOHos when he saw Charley

2) There was a "HO" in the background at the psych ward.

3) Hurley and Jack played HORSE but quit at HO.

"H" is the 8th letter of the alphabet and "O" is the 15th

HO = 815

The dustbuster was part of his scam. Miles didn't need it to do anything other the to look odd, make noise and fool the old gal downstairs... "Don't come up... no matter what you hear!"... scam, scam, flim-flam man. All for show.

Miles is a ghost whisperer. He talked to Naomi's dead self, she told him that Kate & Jack did not kill her. He probably talked to the dead grandson at the morgue (he said he went to the police station)... the dead kid probably told him about the cash and dope in the wall. He, or someone he knows, will likely go back for it later.

Everyone assumes that there are only 6 people that make it off of the island. Have we been told that?

It could be that only six come back to public life (the Oceanic Six) but others come back incognito. Some of the Losties would have good reason to remain under the radar by allowing the real world to think that they are dead.

"...anagrams...for Miles Straume and Frank Lapidus."

"Miles Straume"
------------------
"Aimless Muter" - reference to the fact that he kept wandering around the jungle telling Faraday to be quiet

"Realism Met Us" - Obviously he isn't much for kidding around

"Less Immature" - because he seemed more mature than Faraday when it comes to being a prisoner

"Simulates Rem" - talks to the sleeping dead

"Smartie's Mule" - involved with drugs

"Frank Lapidus"
------------------
"A Kidnap Furls" - hey if an event can unfurl doesn't it first have to furl?

"Panda Fur Silk" or "If Pandas Lurk"- maybe polar bears aren't the only bears on the island

"Dials Frank Up" - he accidentally calls himself on the sat phone

"Fluid as Prank" - foreshadowing that, thinking it funny, he will tell everyone that the helicopter is out of fuel but if everyone would just pee into the fuel tank...

"Fun Parka Lids" - a clear reference to the gas masks

I like your thinking. Good connection. The only thing I would offer is that Miles seance was a few weeks, or a month before landing on the island, while the coffin scene was more than a year after Jack left the island. That would be a long gap in time... but who knows - time seems to be really messed-up on LOST. Could be a matter of days(?).

I just got around to looking at some of the screen captures at the web site gallery.lost-media.com and I saw in the scene where Miles is in the dead drug dealer's room, there's a screen cap with a little clock on the desk and a poster that has the months on it on the wall. You can't quite read the calendar but you can tell by the length of the month names what they are, and what days of the week they start and end on. This poster is a "fiscal year" calendar with July through December down the left column and January through June down the right column. And it can be seen that September ends on a Sunday and June (last month on right side) ends on a Monday. This requires that February be a leap year having 29 days, and that this must be a 2007-2008 fiscal year. Therefore this scene must be a flash forward. I think someone posted that they saw the date of April 2007 in the scene with future, drunk, bearded Jack using his Golden Pass flying back to LA. So this could be around the same time.

TV Guide Michael Ausiello is reporting that "Lost" will be broadcast in two pieces this year, for the 13 eps the producers said that they would be able to make, with the second set appearing in the fall - and that rather than break 8-5, they may end the current run one early and make the two mini-seasons 7 and 6 episodes, respectively - apparently, they say, the end of episode 7 makes a cleaner break.

http://community*tvguide*com/blog/TVGuide-Editors-Blog/Ausiello-Report/700000049

#285. Posted by: Cecil Rose at February 14, 2008 10:02 AM

Damn, I cannot keep these "seasons" straight! This strike totally messed the nice 16-ep seasons. So we're getting season 4 in 13 eps total but as 2 runs of 7 eps and 6 eps? But then season 5 will be 19 eps total in one long break?
How is this going to affect the release of the DVD's? Are they going to wait until all planned eps have aired and then release them? Or will they be an abbreviated version of the last 3 seasons?

#286. Posted by: Trinity at February 14, 2008 10:25 AM

@ ardie/#283: Or it could be the last time leap year rolled around, which was 2004, the year 815 crashed. My guess is that this scene happened somewhere in the months before the crash, and the scene with Naomi and Abbadon selecting the team members was a couple months after (because that part was obviously not a flash-forward).

#287. Posted by: Trinity at February 14, 2008 10:31 AM

@Trinity -

Yes, the S-4 DVD's was one of the first questions I had, too, but I haven't heard how thay plan to handle them.

And as for the missing 3 eps, Cuze and Lindelof have said we'll get them, but not necessarily when, so don't know how many eps in S-5.

Other rumors are that "Lost" will move to 10PM in S-4-part 2, behind ABC's powerhouse "Grey's Anatomy" - a very ratings-boosting time slot.

So many thoughts, so little time. I've read most of the above ...did anyone comment about the pilot dropping a toy airplane into the fish tank? Also, if he landed the helicopter so precisely, seemingly in tact, how did he get so banged up? The interior seemed fine when Sayid was checking it out...no blood or anything. And the scene with the passengers scrambling to get out of the helicopter mid-air was weird..like they were fighting or something, not just trying to bail out. Was it really hit by lightening??? Am breathless waiting for tonight's ep. WNMC.

#290. Posted by: lovelost at February 14, 2008 1:50 PM

I am really liking the Atlantis Idea. It makes a lot of sense. There could be two different routes that are followed here:
1 - Darma was an effort to study the island and its powers, this could also explain the natives, possibly survivors from Atlantis.
2 - Darma are the survivors of Atlantis. This could explain why there was a polar bear with the logo being there for so many years.

Either way, I watch Stargate Atlantis (make fun, I don't mind) and I don't know how true to the story of Atlantis they are, but they spend a lot of time reviewing experiments that the orginal Atlantians were working on. This just reminds me a lot of the Darma experiments that are going on. For those that watch the show, Jacob could have assended? Again, if Stargate is making all this up, it doesn't hold much!

Thanks for listening (reading),

Remember when Sawyer admitted to Jack and Kate that he had an STD? I hope the cages had condoms!

A cracked easter egg:
The confusing translation of the French Tunisian newspaper headlines above the 815 picture:

Philosophy: an original work has uncoupled

Against the English whole

The washing of brains in freedom.

(Any idea what this is supposed to mean?)

Sounds like a bad Cecil Rose haiku.
Or a good RNM haiku.

USA Today has some new producer hints at

@202: I thought that myself about "taller walt" -- that perhaps this wasn't a clue, but just a JOKE, to acknowledge the oddity of walt being exactly the same (like a ghost should be, frozen in time) but taller (like real-life growing actors get). You know, like when they change actors on a show for the same role and make a snarky comment like, "gee, that haircut really makes you look different" to sort of acknowledge the change even though the show pretends like it's the same person.
