Lost Random Topic Thread: Hiatus Edition (Part 3 - Last One!)

In anticipation of the season five premiere of "Lost" on Jan. 21, 2009 -- and the renewed conversations that will likely inspire -- I'm opening the third and final hiatus edition random topic thread. Comments on the first and second editions are now closed.

In related news, comments on the Lost Blog Reader Map have been reopened. If you're a regular Lost Blog participant or if you're new to our little "Lost" home, stop by and tell us (in vague geographic terms) where you're from.

Feel free to use this random topic thread to discuss off-topic subjects. As always, normal rules of etiquette, netiquette and niceness apply.

Yayy I'm first!!!

...sorry meg. =]

By the way... 33 days!

#2. Posted by: ilovebenjaminlinusxx at December 19, 2008 8:51 AM

It has been an eternity since I have last visited here. I trust everyone is well?

As always, during the off-season, my affinity for Lost seems to dwindle.

Only the scarf can make things right.....

Shikotee -

Stop by the Lost Reader Map bloga and stick apin in...

#4. Posted by: Cecil Rose at December 19, 2008 12:11 PM

And all our other friends returning in anticipation of season 5, please drop by the "Lost Blog Reader Map" and push in a pin.

Adding more information than just location seem to make the pins permanent. So show us your mug, or a neat icon (there are some gret ones - see welh's - click on it twice to see it full size for best effect), or a comment). And register your favorite lost character by the pin color and shape you select - sorry there weren't enough to have a wider set of choices.

I'm with you shikotee. The hiatus is just too depressing to spend a lot of time here talking about the past...when all I'm jonesing for is new eps! (No offense ya'll. I do miss you.)

#8. Posted by: JoePike at December 22, 2008 10:10 AM

Hey, y'all! Less than a month (and definitely counting) till the LOST premiere. Can't wait! I've missed you guys.

#9. Posted by: GatorGal at December 22, 2008 11:08 AM

Hey everyone! Getting excited about having our LOST back! During the hiatus, I joined the Mac's Lost Blog Fantasy Football League (MLBFFL on the Yahoo Sports Fantasy Football) and my team, the KILLER RABBITS just became the Champions this morning after last night's game. Quite a feat for the Killer Rabbits as we started dead last and just barely made the playoffs. Anyway, had to brag that my team came out on top. Yeah!! Thanks to all the other teams for the challange; The Desmondators, Juicy Island Nipples, The Island Moving Co., Romo Death Pylons, Black Rock Stars, Dharma Sharks, Death For Charlie, Fish Bisquits, and Nikki's Revenge. Was great playing with all of you!! Hope to play against you guys again next season. Most of all, thanks to my Wacally Wabbits for pulling off this amazing victory! Long Live Bunnies #8 and #15.
Sincerely,
LostBunnyLover

#10. Posted by: BunnyLover at December 23, 2008 10:20 AM

Congratulations, BunnyLover! And to the second place Desmondators (bcre8ve) and third place Romo Death Pylons.

I can't wait for Jan 21st. I asked Santa for Season 4 in my stocking, so that should keep me busy in the meantime.

Wishing a safe and happy holiday season to all my Lost Blog friends!

#11. Posted by: Clementine at December 23, 2008 7:12 PM

Happy Festivus everyone!

I'm sure you're all gathered around the Festivus Pole right now, sated by your Festivus Dinner of traditional meatloaf and sauce. Of course, now is the time when we must next engage in the Airing of Grievances ...

Hmm ... apparently I have already aired a multitude of my grievances during the hiatus, so ...

It's time for the Festivus Feats of Strength! Enjoy!

#12. Posted by: ealgumby at December 23, 2008 10:04 PM

Wishing everyone the best throughout the holidays and the new year. May the mysteries be great, and the theories/solutions crazy and zany!

Namaste!

What did everyone think of the sneak peaks on the abc site?

#14. Posted by: Shana at December 29, 2008 1:52 AM

Bunnylover,

Would you be interested in a coaching job at a centrally located major university?

#15. Posted by: Cecil at December 29, 2008 1:18 PM

Just finished the S-4 DVDs last week.

Noticed within them one comment from Damon Lindelof that the fans were now wondering "where the island is", but maybe also ought to be wondering "WHEN the island is" - sort of a warning that maybe there's been some hanky panky with time as well as space.

#16. Posted by: Cecil at December 29, 2008 1:25 PM

Hi Cecil - no... not interested at coaching UT. Don't think I could fill the shoes of Fulmer. Can anyone really?

#17. Posted by: BunnyLover at December 29, 2008 2:32 PM

Hey, everyone. Just coming back to the site after an extremely long hiatus. Glad to see the old faces around.

Point of conversation - what was that airline listed in the last video post at dharmaspecialaccess.com? I tried typing in aljiraairways.com and got nothing. No recognizable hits on google either.

Hope everyone is having a great holiday season.

#18. Posted by: LostedIt at December 30, 2008 12:36 PM

@ LostedIt - 18
It's spelled "Ajira" airways.

Bunnylover,

I see Phil has landed a network color analyst gig. Guess he has to work hard to make that $7 mil last as long as possible until he can find another coaching job.

#20. Posted by: Cecil at January 5, 2009 10:49 AM

Hi Cecil - I was out of town over the weekend and only briefly caught Fulmer on TV. I think he did a good job! We'll see... At least there's no real coaching involved! I wish him luck.

Any bets on whether the Island went to the future or the past?

#22. Posted by: PartyofSix at January 6, 2009 3:06 PM

I definitly have Lost fever. I just re-watched Season 4, and I've been reminded of all the cool open ended story lines...
I bet that the island jumped into the past. I can't wait for the premiere.... And Mac's recap!

#23. Posted by: sillygirl0630 at January 7, 2009 6:53 AM

If the island jumped to the past, could it be its own origin?

i.e. The island just appears one day out of nowhere, complete with smoke monster, massive electomagnetism, relativity altering effects, spooky cabin dweller, frozen donkey wheel, etc, exists for a time, then jumps back to the past to become its own origin, complete with, etc...

#24. Posted by: Cecil Rose at January 7, 2009 11:57 AM

I hope they don't go there with the island as its own origin. It would be too Terminator.
Never could figure out the paradox of John Connor sending his own father back through time. It always seemed like there would have had to have been a timeline where there was no john connor before Reese went back in time the first time. But then why would Reese have gone back that first time cause the machines would have no reason to send a Terminator back....ARRRGGGGHHH head hurts--brain going to explode---and the new season of Lost hasn't even started yet!

#25. Posted by: Crispy Seaplanes at January 12, 2009 3:16 PM

Bah!!! Humans with their linear mode of thought, and inability to understand the complexities involved with time travel. Once you move beyond the finite concepts of beginning and end, only then will you appreciate the true beauty of the universe....

So which came first, the chicken or the island?

ALERT!ALERT!ALERT!ALERT!ALERT!ALERT!

The season 4 finale, "No Place Like Home" is being rebroadcast on ABC tonight, all three parts (originally split over two nights a week apart.)

There are multiple re-broadcasts over the coming week - maybe even the whole of S-4. In my brief look at my cable program guide this morning I counted 14 "Lost" reruns over the next week on ABC, SciFi, and G4 channels, some of them late-night.

Most S-4 but not all, Sci Fi is in a different season, I think. Lots of Lost leading up to the S-5 premiere.

#27. Posted by: Cecil Rose at January 14, 2009 10:47 AM

OMG, I couldn't be more excited. I am loving the finale reruns tonight, pop-up video style and all. I forgot just how much this show completely captivates. One more week, kids!! Woot!

#28. Posted by: floridachameleon at January 14, 2009 10:12 PM

floridachameleon,

Another F-stater? You should stick a pin in the Lost Reader Map (scroll about six blogs down).

#29. Posted by: Cecil Rose at January 15, 2009 9:56 AM

I am just sooooo excited. The recap of the finale really brought it back to me. And watching the recap of the 4th season on G4 or Sci fi was neat because I had forgotten that the whole season was just a few days! And so much happend!

Hey all. Back for another quick check-in.

A friend of mine told me about a Lost-related site that he frequents. Apparently the writer got sent a preview of the first two eps and posted some hints (but absolutely no spoilers, that would be unconscionable!) into the first episodes and the tone/content of season 5.

Having awoken from the long hibernation, and in the middle of putting a power drill bit through the old temple to release the pent up pressure of ideas, theories, inconsistencies and all things confusingly Lost, it is time to be proactive for this season’s opener.

**** PURE PREGAME SPECULATION ****

Ancient Egyptians vs. The Losties.

An Answer to the question: how do you move an island? Yank it’s chain.

The island is part of a clock constructed by the ancient Egyptians to interface with their after world spirit gods, who would judge their body double and soul (ka) after death to see if one was worthy to be reunited with their body (reincarnation) and sent back to the Earth world. There are two separate worlds at play: the human world (Earth) and a spirit world.

The island is part of a spirit world pendulum. The island (“snow globe”) is the bob at the end of an electromagnetic and gravity field stream that has a the pivot point is in the earth’s core. The island then arcs on a plane from the North Pole, through England, Europe, Tunisia-Egypt, Bali, Pacific Ocean-Fiji to Portland, Oregon. The path of the pendulum arc intersects our Earth world with the parallel spirit world of ancient Egyptian religion. The ancient Egyptians searched for this nexus to prove the truths of their religious beliefs. And once they found the intersection point for life and death, the island became the judgment temple for souls since it was part of the gateway from the human world and the spirit world.

The problem with seeing or finding the island is that its pendulum arc is different than the rotation of the earth (earth time) and the pendulum is on a different (spirit world) plane. In order to make sure their pharaohs would get to the afterlife, ancient priests found a way to match the time references to the arc to create an interface between the earth and spirit worlds (and ingress-egress to-from the island). This is why Alpert (who I think is an Egyptian temple priest) was so insistent that Juliet leave Florida “right away” to get to Portland, because he knew that was the spirit arc’s slowest oscillation point was there, and it was the critical to get to that location at that specific time.

In a pendulum clock, there is a “regulator” of the arc called an “escapement” This regulates and keeps the “time” consistent at set intervals. It also releases any tension build up on the pendulum to keep the mechanism in synch. The Swan station (The Hatch) was the pendulum mechanism regulator; every 108 minutes the electromagnetic tension build up from the earth core EM-gravity field stream had to be released to keep the pendulum in its regulated time path. When the Hatch was destroyed, the regulator was destroyed which now allows the pendulum to swing faster (i.e. the island moving away from the freighter in Faraday’s rocket experiment).

If you focus solely on a pinpoint on the bob of a grandfather clock pendulum when it reaches the bottom of its arc, and continue to focus on that point, the bob will return to view on a regular basis. Focal point at the bottom of a grandfather clock, you only see the disc when it reaches the bottom arch. If you suddenly move the chain up, on the next pass the disc would be “gone.” It is in a different level or plane. This is the theory of why the island “vanished” without creating a massive water vortex from the displacement of its 13,000 feet of volcanic mass.

In a pendulum clock, there is also a mechanism called the gear or wheel train. It connects with the power source (here the electromagnetic energy stream; why no metal allowed to turn the gears), usually to step up the power so the pendulum can use it. The Orchid station’s donkey wheel is the gear train mechanism which “changes” the length of the pendulum energy stream, and in turn, changing the visible arch plane and its relative speed to the ratio of the rotation of the earth.

Now, where were the people “deposited” when the island “vanished?” Those still within the confines of the snow globe, like Faraday’s raft, would remain on the island bob. The Oceanic 6 raft was outside the snow globe effect, so they would be off the island bob and inside the parallel plane of the spirit world. This would explain all the factual errors, legal inconsistencies, etc. in the O6 storyline which made no sense to us in our world, but could make sense in a different world (like Alice in Wonderland, Dorothy in Oz, or Chihiro in the bath house in Spirited Away).

The Oceanic 6 never got “home” to their real families. They were living in a parallel “fantasy” world. When Ben said everyone had to return to the island, including Locke’s body, it reminds me of the Egyptian reunification theory of the body and soul together were necessary for reincarnation. It also could mean that everyone was needed to balance a universal principle (like conservation of mass or energy) which could be why “bad things” happened to the island once the O6 left. Maybe part of them remained as the evil spirits (ghosts) of Jack, Kate and Sayid who terrorized the inhabitants, and thereby ruining Sawyer’s attempts to hook up with Juliet.

If the island is part of a large clock mechanism to the afterlife, that would explain why the island is so important to people like Widmore. If you can control the afterlife clock, can you effectively “cheat death” and remain immortal? Can you use the mechanism to create a time machine? Can you release the powerful underworld gods of destruction into the Earth world to eliminate your enemies in order to rule the world like a modern pharaoh?

#34. Posted by: boodle at January 19, 2009 8:59 AM

What big question do you think they will get to first?

Where/when did the island go?

What were the horrible things that happened "because Jack left the island"?

What happened to the Losties who were out to sea when the freighter exploded?

Why did they say 8 people got off the plane? And why did they pick Boone, Libby and Charlie to die after the crash?

Who is the second person Sun blames for Jin's death (if he is dead)? Widmore? Keamy? Ben? Jack? Herself? Is she really wanting to work with Widmore, or is it a double cross?

What did Charles Widmore mean when he said the Island was always his? That everything Ben has he stole from him?

Where did Penny and Desmond go?

What is the deal with Richard Alpert? And why does he keep checking on John Locke like a Thanksgiving Day turkey to see if he's done?

What is Ben's plan to get "them all back" to the island? Does "them all" include Walt? Ji Yeon?

What is up with Claire? Both chillin in the cabin Claire and psycho in the nursery dream Claire?

Who was the leader before Ben that ordered the massacre? Richard?

And those are just the ones that come to mind that came up last season...there's still what is the smoke monster, who were the bodies at the bottom of the lake, why does everyone see dead people, what are the whispers, what happened to Cindy (and her scarf), why were these specific people all on flight 815, and what does it all mean?!?

Just under 2 days till we get some answers! Or at a minimum some more questions!

#35. Posted by: FenwayBen at January 20, 2009 2:15 AM

Been thinking about Richard...

Now that we know via the Orchid that time travel is possible, perhaps it is not the case that Richard is ageless - it seems more likely that he traveled in time to do the things that he's had to do. Who knows - perhaps the Richard that we have seen in present time has not yet even done those things we've seen him do in the past?

#36. Posted by: shikotee at January 20, 2009 11:14 AM

Tonight's the night!
I think we'll find out quickly where the island went and what happened to those at sea when it disappeared.
Anxious to find out how Locke ended up off island in a coffin with a different name though!

Yesterday got me into a reflective mood and I realized something deep...
Obama is fun to say--
Obama, bama, Bobama
Bonana fana fo fobama
Fee fy mo Mobama
Obama!

I'm ok now just had to get that off my chest...
