This is a thread for the movie "The Gladiator", starring Russell Crowe and Jaoquin Phoenix; any comments, what you liked, what you didn't like, etc. are welcome.

i don't think there is anything bad you can say about this movie, it was brilliant. the only thing that really bugged me was that you never found out what happened to the dog at the start of the movie...

the dog! I forgot about that poor dog -- he just kinda disappeared.

I wrote a review when it came out and my opinion still remains the same -- it's a fantastic film.

I think that Jaoquin Phoenix made a terrific villian. And I loved Lucilla's speech at the end, eventhough my brother said it was a bit corny; I totally disagree with him.

DITTO. Phoenix stole the show (and I'm a Crow fan!). He was terrific. Right on the mark.

As far as I am concerned Gladiator is the film of the year. Crowe is perfect however I don't agree with many comments about Phoenix, I thought he was a bit lame. I feel that the German Shephard was sorely underused as he would of provided a great dog vs tiger deathmatch in the colliseum.

To make a sweeping generalization, I think men like this movie more than women. I, as a woman, still can't understand what makes this movie the "best of the year." Can someone explain it to me? Is it just a good revenge movie? What is it about Gladiator that's so darn sloot?

from the female POV its russel crow in a gladiator outfit! i mean what more could a girl want?

as a female movie go'er its a blood and guts flick, but its not over the top. i apprciated that in a strange way. maximus loved his family and was willing to go threw so much to get is revenge, that was cool to me.

all and all it was just a damned fine flick what more can i say.

The Gladiator finally made it to Europe - and I made the mistake to watch it. An extremely dull movie IMO, but what really spoiled viewing enjoyment for me was all the liberties taken with historical facts - large and small.

I know for a fact that there never was a historic battle the Romans won against the Germans at that time - quite the contrary. The Germanic leader Armenius wiped the Romans off the plate. The Emperors of Rome were not addressed as "Caesar", but as "Augustus" - Caesar had become a title for a war lord. There were many Caesars serving under one "Augustus". And it is all but incomprehensible that anyone would take a Spaniard, which was all Roman at the time, into captivity and make him a Gladiator. And there is no way that the Emperor would not simply have assassinated the Gladiator - there was no such thing as law and order back then and he could have done so easily- noone would have cared. To meet a slave in open combat??? An Emperor???????

I guess I always feel that if they do use an historical context they should try to get it right.....nuff griped. ;-)

JM, Hollywood has its own version of history.

And you know about history - it all depends who's writing it! Hollywood's role may not actually be to truly depict an historical event. Moreso its flavour. Most people aren't interested in the real facts - they just want a movie.

However, the screenwriter should have done his research.

I just watched Gladiator on the weekend, and I must say I really like movies like that.. sounds strange for a girl to say, but I do!!! I also like things set back in those times!! very interesting, although I think they used a fair amount of poetic liscence in that movie!! something were not too far from the truth, as there was one emperor in history, who was not helped by his subject, and ened up dying.... I really liked Russel Crow in that, cause a) he isn't a bad actor, and b) he looked damn fine in that skirt!! (Toga)
MmmmmmMmmmm!!!! ;-)

I too was wondering what happend top the dog in the begining of the movie!!! was it killed!!! I hope not, but I think it was, as it was that kind of movie!!! poor puppy dog
