Well, the big news is that Bravheart is finally on DVD. I should be receiving the disc any day now and I'll be writing a review within the next week. I really hope they did this film justice because I've been waiting for the DVD for a long time.

I just got The Princess Bride DVD ... trying to slowwwwly build up a collection of "must have" movies.

Are DVDs cheaper to produce than VHS tapes?

When is GEORGE LUCAS going to get on board and release SW on DVD ..... grrrr !!!!

I just got PB on DVD too. Yes, DVDs are much cheaper to produce and that was one of the original goals of DVD-to debut the discs at a lower price than tapes. But they ended up being about teh same.

Mr Ittot and I are thinking more and more about plunking down the $$$$ and getting a DVD player. The newspaper said that "I, Claudius" is now out on DVD (3 discs, over 15 hours long and ~$100). That's enough reason to buy a machine. Is one machine any better than another? Meaning brands. Gotta reasearch this.

Syxx, maybe the DVDs are cheaper in the States than up here. Most current releases are about $22-30, with the non-current titles in the $30-50 range.

Why are the new releases cheaper than the old ones? And is the exchange rate still about $1.22 Canadian to $1 American?

Xed - WOW - DVDs are no where that expensive here except for a few (X-Files movie for one which I haven't been able to find for under $28 ... grrrr). Even with the exchange rate that seems high.

I paid $24 for Last of the Mohicans but most are running $13-$18 ... but I've gotten a couple in the bargain bin (Highlander - original and still the best) for $10.

I think DVD player is going to be a BIG thing for Christmas this year and video stores are converting huge chunks of their floorspace to DVD.

Syxx, I wish the exchange rate was that good. It's in the $1.45-1.47 range. For me to buy one US $, it'll cost me about $1.45 of Canadian $.

Most new releases are in the $21.79-$29.99 range here (the cheaper prices being at places like Future Shop and A&B Sound - but that's only for a short time - after a month or so, they go up to about $30-35 - I guess it depends on the demand). I'm pretty hard-pressed to pay $20 for a VHS for some movie that I really wouldn't want as part of my permanent collection. The players are starting to come down in price a little. You're still looking at $500-700 for a decent machine. Some are in the $275-350 range (they're not too bad). Maybe in 6 months to a year they'll be a bit more in people's price range.

Argo, you can usually find the X Files movie here at $29.99 CAD, which would probably be about $22 US.

I have The X-Files movie on tape, so I'm not in a big rush to buy it on DVD. I can wait ...

What movies does anyone particularly covet on DVD?

Aliens is pretty good on DVD, because the added footage is actually worth watching. In most cases it's obvious that the "bonus footage" was originally cut for a good reason. Seven also, because the complex lighting really doesn't come through on VHS(everything just looks muddy).

I just got Braveheart, but I haven't had a chance to watch the film yet. I also just purchased The Insider, which ranks with the best journalism films of all time. I'd recommend both.

Argo: Excellent choice! High Fidelity is one of the best movies to come out in the last few years; amazingly it didn't do all that well at the box office, but I anticipate that it'll be pretty successful on DVD and VHS. I think the DVD comes out tomorrow (19th).

I just found a website that will list a bunch of sites with their prices for VHS/DVD. Good for comparison shopping ... there is quite a range of prices.

Here's something annoying-when DVDs first came out a lot of people, myself included, comlained about the flimsy cardboard cases and predicted they wouldn't last very long. Well of course they didn't, and now they come in sturdier plasic ones. Of course, the new ones are a different size so they look kind of stupid lined up on a shelf. It's a veritable outrage.

syxx - great work on the techie jargon. Can you get school credit for talking over our collective heads?

Really, it's a good resource, explained for the non-techs or tech wanna-be's. Gives me some words to throw around to impress the uninformed masses.

OK syxx ... here's one ... your entire reputation is going to hinge on whether you can answer this or not.

If a DVD player (in the US) gets a disc from ... say France ... can that Frenchie disc play on the US player??? What I'm trying to get at is are there different standards as in VHS (NTSC for US/ PAL for England/ SECAM for France)

Ya know what I mean???

Do you check this forum oh All Wise One??? See - I've given you a promotion from lowly moderator.

Get those tires replaced yet?

No, DVDs are coded by "zones" representing segments of the globe. Zone 1 discs can only be played on zone 1 players, sold only in a certain place. Early Playstation 2s sold in Japan had a "bug" that would let them play any DVD but that has since been fixed.

Yes I did get the tires replaced, 5 brand new ones. Sadly, it seems every light bulb on the vehicle has decided to die in rapid sequence so now I think I'll take a day and do a mass replacement. I was also a victim of Phoenix's crackdown on red light running to the tune of $170(damn photo radar, I got caught in the intersection...not my fault!), can I start a legal defense fund?

I was just a wonderin' if anyone could help me out. I intend to buy a DVD player for my PC, however do they have the same restrictions inposed on them as stand alone DVD players i.e. do they play only one region, here in England region 2 is the norm and they suck compared to region 1. Thanks.

I know you can buy, online, DVD players that 'll bypass some region encoding; I would assume it'd be possible with computer players also...
