This is a blatant ripoff from a question I saw posted a while ago on another board, but it's an interesting topic, so what the hell:What are the worst movies of the last 10 years? I'd put Mission to Mars on the list... [This message has been edited by trustno1 (edited 09-12-2000).] IP: Logged |

Off the top of my head:The Mask Ace Ventura (all of them) The Cable Guy The Thomas Crown Affair Pulp Fiction Natural Born Killers American Beauty (sorry trustno1, I still think I'm right on this one ) How about the most surprising movie of the last 10 years (as in unexpectedly good)? Or can I not ask this until next week? My pick would be Cool Runnings - in German. Hands down.

Heh, if that's how you want to play, then "The Patriot" goes on my list -- talk about an overblown, historically-inaccurate turd. IP: Logged |

Turd? That's the best argument you can make? Well, in any case, I beg to differ. Beauty was simply booooring. Patriot on the other hand...Heath...Mel...horses...works for me any time. IP: Logged |

The Patriot is a pathetic excuse for a film. It's a waste of celluloid, a waste of resources, a waste of time -- it's the kind of film that makes moviegoers angry because it has sucked two-plus hours of their lives away. The Patriot is a smoking pile of refuse on the landscape of Hollywood. It's a perfect example of all that's wrong with movies today. A movie with established stars, a big budget, and a historical epoch that lends itself to drama has no reason NOT to work, but the Patriot was a mish-mash of melodrama and musket balls. It had no reason to exist and it should be wiped from the collective consciousness. And it's a turd. IP: Logged |

The Cable Guy was terrible. Ace Ventura was terrible. I didn't like Erin Brockovich - a lot of people did. It was a waste of my time. Mission to Mars is a good choice. Pulp Fiction was good and bad. The story didn't grab me but some of the filmmaking did. The Phantom Menace had a bit of fromage-dom (we're talking stink) in it. The complete list of bad movies of the last 10 years could probably take a year to create.IP: Logged |

TN1, I had to jump in here just to mention two recent rentals of movies that were widely praised by reviewers last year that I thought were horrid: "Magnolia" and "Topsy-Turvy"."Topsy-Turvy": Me and the Missus couldn't even finish watching this movie, and the Missus is a fan of musical theater. It drags and drags. And a lot of it is surprisingly dark. The trailer is extremely deceiving, making it seem like the movie is as frenetic and lighthearted as the light operas penned by it's subjects. Not even close. "Magnolia": It's extremely rare when I don't "get" a movie at all--not even grasp what the maker was attempting, let alone what he might have achieved--but this was one of those times. I even tried re-watching the opening montage after seeing the whole thing, just to see if it made more sense. It didn't. It's a movie about a day in the life of several painfully dislikeable characters who achieve no form of redemption, then get beaned with frogs. I didn't get the point. Finally, everything you said about "The Patriot" probably applies to "The Phantom Menace" don't you think? A can't miss combination of genre and star-power, no excuse for the movie to suck, yet it did. A muddled combination of melodrama and light-sabres. Yep, that's about right. Here's an overlooked gem from last year that I rented two weeks ago: "Pushing Tin". With "Hi Fidelity" coming out on DVD this week, fans of Cusak should give this one a try. Beats me how a movie starring Billy Bob Thornton, John Cusak, Angelina Jolie and Kate Blanchett could fly off the radar so fast, but it's a perfectly funny dark comedy. IP: Logged |

I have yet to see "Magnolia" or "Topsy-Turvy" but from reading the "glowing" reviews I was able to gather that both lean toward the pretentious side, and that never sits well with me.I never could figure out what the big deal was with Paul Thomas Anderson (the director of "Magnolia"). His debut, "Boogie Nights," wasn't that good. Sure, the performances were decent, but overall the film didn't deserve the acclaim it received. Anderson is a critical darling who can do no wrong -- for now anyway. And you're right about "The Phantom Menace." I went into that film with low expectations, but I was still disappointed. When a director has all the elements for a success and still fails, that should be a permanent mark against them. [This message has been edited by trustno1 (edited 09-13-2000).] IP: Logged |

Oh but I'm not wrong, trust. If I were I would simply admit it, because I'm not one of those people who just can't say it, but I'm just not. Here's another one: The Crow: Stairway to Heaven Loved The Crow though. IP: Logged |

The only reason I see ominous clouds for Ep II is because Lucas is writing, producing and directing. I'll give him all the credit in the world for imagining a bizarre, fantastic universe, but the man should NOT be writing and directing. Let him produce, but get him away from the damn word processor.IP: Logged |

I first saw Phantom Menace on a computer screen - one of those illegal CD Roms of the movie that circulated in Europe long before the movie was released in the cinemas - a friend of my brother's had nabbed it of the 'net, and showed it to a select audience. Not worth the trouble. I really loved Star Wars, but this was nowhere as good.....not even close.JM115 IP: Logged |

Without a doubt. The Astronaut's Wife is the biggest pile of steaming bad movie I've ever seen. Ever. And I've seen Joe Don Baker movies. It wasn't even fun, bad. Just plain awful, the direction was bad, Charlize Theron was worthless and weak, the plot was lifeless and turgid. Johnny Depp was pretty good, but he had the screen time of Darth Maul. the 13th Warrior and The Watcher are close seconds. IP: Logged |

hmm...worst movies, eh?Phantom Menace (2 hours I can never get back, and Jar Jar Binks literally killed millions of my brain cells and took years off my life) The Patriot (horrible stinking pile of idiotic, inaccurate crap. The acting was cheesy, the plot was boring, the bad guys were stupid and hokey, the whole race relations bit being glossed over was a travesty, need I say more?) Batman and Robin (Darn you Shumacher!) Titanic (THREE and a half hours of my life that I can never get back!!) The World is Not Enough (The WORST Bond movie EVER! The puns were horrid, the Bond girls stupid, the villain idiotic and pitiful, the story hackneyed.) As for Magnolia, I only liked Cruise in it. It was the first film I've seen in which Cruise didn't just play the same role he always seems to play (smart assed, bad assed good guy, obviously not who he played in Eyes Wide Shut, but I haven't seen that one, and I don't plan on it). You wanted to smack him and you tried to hate him in this film, but you just couldn't bring yourself to do so. I think he played the part really well. His character was overdone, yet he played him well, leaning toward creating a more complex character instead of overdoing it like most actors would have. The character himself wasn't complex, but I think Cruise did what he could with it.

Three words:Eyes Wide Shut. Kubrik was a genius, but this woeful excuse for a film should have been shut down after his passing, both to honor his memory and spare the moviegoing public. I'm usually don't mind nudity -- particularly when it involves tall redheaded Australians -- but here it was merely an attempt to cover a total lack of drama and chemistry between the characters. I didn't feel scarred or dumber after watching this movie -- I left empowered, knowing I'll never be publicly attached to such vacuous dreck as Cruise et al. Graciously, -The Curmudgeon IP: Logged |

Yes, I'm very, very late in posting. But I'd like to include a few movies that I absolutely despise with every inch of my little being:Down and Out in Beverly Hills (Nick Nolte, Richard Dreyfuss, Bette Midler--stop grimacing Trust). Even at 6 years of age, I wanted to kick a hole through the tv. Mr. Holland's Opus (Richard Dreyfuss' jowls were awfully annoying) I agree with everything everyone's said about Phantom Menace and I think Shakespeare in Love should be peed on. IP: Logged |

Final Destination. That movie was pointless. And had terrible acting.Phantom Menace wasn't too bad. Not the best of the SW movies. But I still enjoyed/still enjoy it. I liked Eyes Wide Shut. It was very weird. Which is a good thing for me I don't like most horror movies; too many sequels There's more movies that suck. I just can't think of them at the moment.

In defense of Topsy Turvy-I would never recommend this to anyone I didn't know. All the people I know who loved it are Gilbert and Sullivan fans(specifically fans of the Mikado)as well as classical musicians. My husband watched the orchestra rehearsal scene twice. To continue being diametrically opposed to DC in this question-we stopped watching Pushing Tin and returned it without ever finishing it. And I am a major John Cusack fan-I've even had dreams about him. The actors may have been good, but the characters were totally uninteresting, annoying, and frankly, we didn't care what happened to them. I realize I am in a minority in this opinion as well, but I think Welcome to the Dollhouse was a far better movie depicting the emptiness of suburban life than American Beauty.IP: Logged |

Event Horizon was a major disappointment. So was Sphere - just AWFUL!!!SPAWN - PPEEEEE-UUUUUUUU!!!! The Avenger was sooooooo bad that I stopped watching it in the middle. I didn't even care what happened at the end - I just couldn't endure the horrible dialogue and was suffering from acute boredom watching it! ------------------ Disgruntled X-Files Fan (to use the term loosely) IP: Logged |
