This question focuses on talent, not success. Which current actors (male) will be remembered as "the great ones"?

Here's a couple to start:

Andre Braugher -- best known as Frank Pemberton on "Homicide"

Edward Norton -- "Fight Club", "American History X"

Anthony Hopkins -- singlehandedly made it impossible to eat fava beans with a straight face.

Well, I'd have to say Johnny Depp back in the days of "What's Eating Gilbert Grape," "Benny and Joon," "Cry Baby" and "Edward Scissorhands."

Oh, and Roy Dupuis who, in his movie "Being At Home With Claude," delivers the most amazing 30+ minute monolouge I've ever seen.

Nope, Depp peaked with "Private Resort". A true classic! Gilbert Grape was nauseating.

You call posting a personal attack then turning and running leaving someone alone?
Whatever. But the polite thing for you to do would be to apologize. * shrugs *

There are a number of actors that can be seen as quite good at what they do, but who will be remembered as a ‘great one’ - that’s more difficult. I think Alec Guiness will be in that group, DeNiro, Hopkins, and Branagh might be. Some might be tempted put Reagan there as well, and for quite different reasons, but that’s a debate for another thread...

As for the pint-sized sub-category, I was impressed with Haley Joel Osment's performance in The Sixth Sense. Though Bruce Willis should get some award for his understated acting - and in a summer movie to boot - Osment carried the emotional center of the movie very well. He’s no Jake Lloyd (young ‘Aspirin’ Skywalker), thankfully, but the acting force is strong in that little Haley fella.

BBF and Wolfie -- if you two have problems, please take it to email. I'll be happy to talk to you both, but I'd prefer to keep this area on-topic.

Thanks for understanding.

Xyon: It'll be interesting to watch Osment's career develop. The kid has serious acting chops and he seems to be abnormally mature for a boy that age. Hopefully his parent's will guide him well.

Dear trustno1:

If this were logically a problem which could be handled in e-mail between Wolfie and myself, I'd be glad to comply. However, it only makes sense to me that a public personal attack such as the one Wolfie posted earlier, deserves to be settled with a public apology.

In any case, as long as Wolfie will in the future abide by the "no personal attacks" guidelines of this forum, we should have no further problems, right?

And since this is a public forum, I feel perfectly within my rights to post messages to Wolfie, as long as I too abide by the guidelines of this forum.

Please feel free to contact me in e-mail if you have anything further you'd like to state about this to me, trustno1, and thanks for understanding.

Sincerely,

BBF

I understand that his folks won't let him watch R-rated movies...so they're definitely hands on. I think we've seen from observing little Mr. 'Home Alone' that the unreal life, big money, and expansive head syndrome stunts kid actors. Maybe he’ll be like little Ricky, er Rick, Schroeder and make it to the other side relatively unscathed.

I think it's too soon to count our chickens when it comes to Osment. He IS exceptional for his age, but still corruptible--like TN1 said, let's hope his parents do a good job (I wouldn't want to be them).

And I think Ralph Fiennes is a candidate for this category. He's a candidate for other categories too...I'm sure some would say the same for Cameron Diaz, although she wasn't lookin' her best in "Being John Malkovich," was she, trust? Noooo.

Ah, I see how it's gonna be

But I'll refrain from comment about Cameron until I post the "which hollywood star do you drool over" thread

I'd agree that his movies of late have been anything but good, that's why I specifically referred to his earlier stuff, such as "Benny and Joon" or "Cry Baby". "Donnie Brasco" was good too. Those are not commercially successful movies, but since we're talking about talent and not just blockbusters, I think JD should be mentioned. As for Oscar's and Golden Globes, well, it wouldn't be the first time that talent has been overlooked in favor of Hollywood politics.

I like Depp ... but he needs to figure out who he is and where he's going. Sometimes he is brilliant ... others ... ho hum.

My brief list ... the top runners (today):

William Hurt
Daniel Day Lewis
John Cusack

What I look for is depth in performance and bringing believability to the role ... even more than just the written script ... that "extra" boost a GOOD actor adds.
