"Harry Potter" Contest

SFScope (in a self-described "...a bald-faced attempt to drive traffic to the site...") is hosting a contest centered around "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows". And, since I am compelled to read anything related to the new Harry novel, I checked it out.

The "Harry Potter Necrology Contest" is pretty cool. It asks us to speculate on which major character(s) will die in the seventh novel. Heck - I have already done my share of speculating on this topic!

Here are the vital rules (from the SFScope site):

Figure out who's going to die, who's going to kill whom, and how, and then let us know. The winner will be the entrant who comes closest to what actually happens in the book (in the case of identical guesses, a random draw will determine the winner), and we'll come up with a suitable prize.

So, all you have to do is describe the death scene in 500 words or less and you can be a winner!

The deadline is midday on Monday, July 9th. For the record, I still think Ron will sacrifice himself to save Harry (just like he did in the Chess game in "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone"), although he might be the one character that JK Rowling was quotes as saying "got a reprieve". If that is the case, then it will probably be poor Neville that jumps in to save the day. But, Neville can't really be called a major character, can he?

So, in classic Clue fashion, my official guess is that the major character that will die is Ron Weasley, in the Deathly Hallows, by a Wormtail "Avada Kevadra" death spell meant for Harry. So easy!

Anyone in the books can die but Ron, in my opinion. He is just too well loved in the books. Harry, Hermione and all the Weasleys love Ron to death. If Harry dies then it's kinda expected. If Hermione dies it's only Harry and Ron that will really care but if Ron dies that's just far too many people emotionally devastated in my opinion so I don't see it happening. I find it easier to think Harry or Hermione or any of the other characters could bite the bucket.

I think public opinion may have Hagrid as the character that takes a dirt nap.

But, I think JK's original plan was to have Ron sacrifice himself. Now, after six books, Ron's death would have a huge impact, as you said - which is why I was thinking he was the guy that got the pardon from his death sentence.

But, for the purposes of the contest, I had to go with Ron. Always go with your first thought, you know...

There are a lot of Harry Potter contests going on right now. My fave is the one hosted by Associated Content - they let you write about ANYTHING Harry Potter
